You hydrate your skin, wear SPF daily, and maybe even dabble in retinol — but if your neck is starting to show signs of aging (think: creases, cords, and sagging), you’re not alone. The neck is one of the first areas to show visible signs of aging, often overlooked until it’s too late.
According to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Daniel Sugai, those vertical neck bands — medically known as platysmal bands — are a major culprit behind the wrinkled or “turkey neck” look.
“We call ‘em the Hulk muscle,” Dr. Sugai says in a recent Instagram video. “We can help soften those vertical cords with Botox injections.”

What Are Platysmal Bands, and Why Do They Form?
The platysma is a thin sheet of muscle that runs down the neck. As we age, this muscle becomes more prominent, creating those visible vertical cords — especially when you clench your jaw or strain your neck. Combine that with a loss of collagen and thinning skin, and those neck lines can start to look deeper and more permanent.
Dr. Sugai’s Solution: Botox for the Neck
While skincare helps, Botox is one of the most effective in-office treatments to smooth these lines. When injected into the platysmal bands, Botox relaxes the muscle and reduces the appearance of neck cords, leading to a smoother, more youthful look.
This treatment is often called the “Nefertiti Lift”, named for the famously long, elegant neck of the ancient Egyptian queen. It can also improve jawline definition when done correctly.
Neck Care at Home: Don’t Skip the Basics
Even if you’re not ready for injectables, it’s worth giving your neck more attention in your skincare routine. Here’s what derms (including Dr. Sugai) typically recommend:
- Extend your skincare (SPF, serums, moisturizer) down to your neck daily.
 - Use peptides or retinol to improve skin texture and boost collagen.
 - Practice good posture and avoid constantly looking down at your phone — aka, “tech neck.”

The Takeaway
If you’re noticing deeper neck lines or muscle cords, it’s not just about sagging skin — it could be your “Hulk muscle” flexing front and center. But with the right skincare — and for some, a little Botox — smoother necks are totally within reach.
