What is Belsomra?

Belsomra contains the active ingredient suvorexant, an orexin receptor antagonist. It is used to treat insomnia, a condition characterized by difficulty falling or staying asleep. Belsomra is believed to work by blocking orexin receptors in the brain. As a result, Belsomra helps block the activity of orexin, a wakefulness-promoting chemical.

Belsomra is available as an oral tablet in various strengths. It is usually taken once at night within 30 minutes of bedtime. It should be taken with at least seven hours left before the planned wake-up time. Taking Belsomra with food could delay the time it takes for the drug to start working. 

What doses of Belsomra are available?

Belsomra is available as an oral tablet in strengths of 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, and 20 mg. The usual recommended dosage is 10 mg per night. The maximum dosage is 20 mg daily.

What are the side effects of Belsomra?
