Breath of the Wild

Backflips are somersaults Link can perform to leap backwards,[8] and avoid certain Enemy attacks.[8][9] These attacks include horizontal and directly downward attacks. Backflips are achieved by simultaneously holding down on the ZL button, moving the left joystick downwards, and pressing X to jump. If timed correctly, Link performs a Perfect Dodge,[10] and can then perform a Flurry Rush. Otherwise, Link can then follow up with a Jump Slash. In Ta'loh Naeg Shrine, the Sheikah Monk Ta'loh Naeg instructs Link on how to use Backflips to avoid attacks.[9] However, Link can perform Backflips without needing to learn it from Ta'loh Naeg, and can unlock its entry in the Ability Controls menu after performing a Perfect Dodge of either kind.

Tears of the Kingdom

Backflips return in Tears of the Kingdom and function the same as before.[11][12][13] However, its entry in the Special Controls menu cannot be unlocked through simply performing a Perfect Dodge of either kind. Instead, Link must receive instructions from the Mysterious Voice in the Kyononis Shrine to unlock its entry.[13] Demon King Ganondorf is also able to perform Backflips to either create distance between himself and Link, or perform Perfect Dodges. He is able to do this in all three phases.
