Kokiri
The Kokiri,(OoTOcarina of Time | OoT3DOcarina of Time 3D | TWWThe Wind Waker | TWWHDThe Wind Waker HD)[1] also known as the Kokiri Tribe,[2] the Children of the Forest,(OoTOcarina of Time)[3] and the Fairy People of the Forest,[1] are a recurring group in The Legend of Zelda series.
Overview
Characteristics
Kokiri are Hylians who are unable to age due to the protective Magic of the Great Deku Tree, a Spirit who protects the Kokiri Forest.[1] All known Kokiri are shown to be children with light skin and typically have red or blonde hair, with the exception of Saria, who instead bears green-colored hair.
In order to adapt to the Sinking of Hyrule, the Great Deku Tree helped to transform the Kokiri into Spirits, causing them to evolve into the non-Human race of Koroks.
History
The Kokiri came about during the earliest ages of civilization when Hylians began to distance themselves from nature.[1][4] Rather than assimilating into developing cities, the earliest Kokiri took refuge in forests just as ancient Hylians did in the distant past of the Era of the Goddess Hylia.[1][5]
The earliest record of their existence is during the beginning of the Era of Prosperity,[6] where they were entrusted with the Spiritual Stone of the Forest to help guard the Door of Time for the Royal Family of Hyrule.[7]
Ocarina of Time
Link is brought to the Kokiri as an infant by his Mother, who fled from the Hyrulean Civil War and sustained fatal injuries in the process.[8] The Great Deku Tree sensed Link's destiny and agreed to take him in.[8] After her passing, the Great Deku Tree raised Link as one of the Kokiri,[8] although he did not grant Link a Fairy companion.
After the end of the War, the Gerudo king Ganondorf visited the Great Deku Tree in secret and demanded to have the Spiritual Stone of the Forest, which the Kokiri swore to protect. As the Great Deku Tree would not give him the Spiritual Stone, he cast a curse on the Spirit of Kokiri Forest,[9] infecting him with a deadly parasite.
Upon realizing that his own end is drawing close, the Great Deku Tree summons the Navi the Fairy and orders her to accompany Link on his upcoming journey.[10] He then tasks the duo with entering his body and purging the curse from within him.[11] When Link and Navi emerge victorious, the Great Deku Tree reveals that his death was already certain.[12] In his last moments, he grants the Spiritual Stone of the Forest to Link and warns of the danger of the Spiritual Stones falling into Ganondorf's hands.[12][13]
After the Great Deku Tree's passing, the self-proclaimed "Boss of the Kokiri", Mido, blames Link for their guardian deity's death.[14] Of the remaining Kokiri, only Saria is willing to defend Link's name.[15] She encounters Link at the Forest exit and bids him farewell by gifting him the Fairy Ocarina.[16]
Saria retreats to the Sacred Forest Meadow, which she intuitively feels will become an important place for her and Link.[17] She teaches Link "Saria's Song", which can allow people to speak to the Spirits in the Forest.[17] After Ganondorf's Rebellion, Ganondorf attacks the Forest Temple within the Sacred Forest Meadow, causing a fell wind to blow from its direction.[18]
Saria goes to the Temple to answer the cries of the forest Spirits and is captured by Ganondorf's minions.[19] Meanwhile, Monsters begin to move into the Kokiri Forest as the late Great Deku Tree's Magic can no longer hold them at bay.[20][21] The Kokiri are forced to hide within their homes as a result.[22] Mido disappears from the Forest,[23] having gone to the Lost Woods to help Saria.[24]
Once Link defeats Phantom Ganon inside the Forest Temple, Saria awakens as the Sage of Forest and grants Link the Forest Medallion.[25][26] Link is brought to the Great Deku Tree's Meadow where he meets the newly-born Deku Tree Sprout, the child of the Great Deku Tree who has been suppressed because of the curse placed upon the Forest Temple.[27] The Deku Tree Sprout explains the circumstances of Link's upbringing among the Kokiri and his destiny to become the Hero of Time.[28] With the birth of the Deku Tree Sprout, the Kokiri Forest is cleared of Monsters and the Kokiri become able to travel outside of the Forest without fear of aging.[29][1] After Ganondorf's defeat, the Kokiri take part in the celebration at Lon Lon Ranch.
Majora's Mask
While no Kokiri are shown, Link retains the Kokiri Sword he obtained from Kokiri Forest on his journey to find Navi. The Sword's hilt has been replaced and changed from wood to metal. Tingle recognizes Link as a Kokiri and claims to be the same as him, lamenting the fact that in his 35 years of life he still has not received a guardian Fairy.[30]

The Wind Waker
During the Era without a Hero, a Kokiri named Fado awoke as the Sage of Wind and came into the service of the King of Hyrule, Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule. The Forbidden Woods feature several hollowed Trees, which may have been used by the Kokiri in the past.
Twilight Princess
The Kokiri do not appear during the Twilight Era, although the Crest of the Kokiri can be found prominently in the Forest Temple of Faron Woods, which was once the Kokiri Forest.[31]
Tri Force Heroes
The Kokiri are not shown in Hytopia, although Madame Couture can fashion Kokiri Clothes based on the Kokiri.[32] The Kokiri Clothes allow the Links to shoot three Arrows at once.[33]
Breath of the Wild
The Kokiri are not present in the Era of the Wilds as they have evolved into Koroks. However, the Forest Dweller's Shields that the Koroks created feature stylized patterns reminiscent of the Crest of the Kokiri.
Other Appearances
Ocarina of Time (Himekawa)
The Ocarina of Time manga by Akira Himekawa begins similarly to Ocarina of Time, with Link having been raised among the Kokiri in the Kokiri Forest but without a Fairy companion to speak of for his own.[35]
They are first seen attending a lecture from the Great Deku Tree on the Creation of the World.[36] While attempting to visit the Great Deku Tree, Link is stopped by Mido, who refuses to let him pass.[37] Later that night, the Great Deku Tree is attacked by Queen Gohma who phases into his body, paralyzing him.[38] This causes the plant life in Kokiri Forest to begin dying as a result.[39] In order to destroy the curse, the Great Deku Tree sends Navi to retrieve Link.[40] As Mido was nearby attempting to prank Link, he joins them on their way back to the Great Deku Tree to find Queen Gohma.
To fend off Queen Gohma, Mido retrieves the Kokiri Sword while Link brandishes the Fairy Slingshot that he made. Together, they strike Queen Gohma's Eye, defeating her and causing her to revert in form to a simple beetle.[41] With the curse lifted, the Great Deku Tree asks Link to take the Kokiri's Emerald to Princess Zelda.[42] Before bidding farewell to the Kokiri, the Great Deku Tree also asks Link to fashion the Kokiri Shield from his bark in order for Link to defend himself against evil.[43] Link takes the Kokiri Sword from Mido and carves the Crest of the Kokiri into the hunk of bark before leaving.[44] Saria stops Link before he leaves the Forest to give him her Fairy Ocarina, asking him to remember the Kokiri Forest when he plays it.[45]
After Link draws the Master Sword and awakens as a young adult, he begins his journey to the Forest Temple. Anticipating this, Ganondorf summons Phantom Ganon and orders him to kill Link before he awakens the Sage of the Forest.[46] As a result of Ganondorf's actions in the region, the Kokiri Forest grows humid and Monsters begin to attack it.[47] While defeating the Monsters, Link encounters Mido, who explains that the infestation is a result of Link breaking the Great Deku Tree's rules and leaving.[48]
Realizing that Saria is missing, the duo race to the Forest Temple. Inside, they are attacked by Phantom Ganon, who attacks by moving between the Paintings throughout the Temple's halls. Mido finds the Fairy Bow and tosses it to Link.[49] By striking Phantom Ganon in one of the Paintings, he causes Saria to be released.[50][51] After she departs for the Sacred Realm, Link bids farewell to the rest of the Kokiri.
Saria appears later to help build the Rainbow Bridge to Ganon's Castle.[52] After Ganon is defeated, Saria joins the other Sages to call upon the Golden Goddesses to seal him away.[53] When peace returns to Hyrule, the Deku Tree Sprout is born.[54]
In the second volume's bonus story, the Kokiri are shown preparing for the annual Deku Festival.[55] They unanimously nominate Saria to play the role of the Fairy princess while Mido hopes to play the Fairy prince,[56] fantasizing about bullying Link, who is cast as a Monster in his fantasy.[57] Fado instead nominates Link for the position and they begin to carve Masks for the play.[58]
Saria advises Link on making the Prince's Mask, which is carved from the Great Deku Tree's branches.[59] It is supposed to ward off evil Spirits and help bring peace to the Kokiri Forest.[59] After Link carves the Mask, Mido steals it to interfere with Link's role. Upon being confronted about it, Mido agrees to return it,[60] only to find that it is missing.[61]
After a brief fight between Link and Mido, Mido insults Link, claiming that he is not a real Kokiri because he does not have a Fairy.[62] This prompts Link to run into the Lost Woods,[63] where he plans to defeat a Monster rumored to dwell inside to prove that he belongs.[64] Saria follows Link into the Woods and the two encounter the Skull Kid who stole the Prince's Mask.[65]
When confronted, the Skull Kid graciously returns the Mask and quickly befriends Link and Saria.[66] Remembering the Deku Festival, Link invites the Skull Kid to visit.[67] The Skull Kid rejects the offer because of his anxiety about having no face,[68] but Link offers to give him the Prince's Mask to act as a face. Struck with inner turmoil over his newfound friend being fated to destroy his kind, the Skull Kid suddenly attacks Link with his blow dart.[69] He then kidnaps Saria, denying the Prince's Mask and demanding to be brought a better Mask, threatening to take Saria's face instead.[70]
The Skull Kid brings Saria to the Baga Tree deep in the Lost Woods. The Baga Tree vows to get revenge on the Great Deku Tree for breaking a covenant forbidding outsiders from entering the Forest,[71][72] revealing Link's destiny to mature and defeat Monsters.[73]
While wrestling with his inner conflict, the Skull Kid frees Saria, who reunites with Link only to be attacked by a swarm of Monsters summoned by the Baga Tree. Mido and a band of the Kokiri appear, helping to fend off the Monsters. The Baga Tree's power suddenly drains when Mido kicks a parasitic beetle from the Baga Tree's nose and steps on it, causing the Monsters to disappear.[74] With the Baga Tree's defeat, the Deku Festival begins and the Great Deku Tree releases Fairy Balls into the Woods. The Skull Kid chooses to stay behind, asking to have the Skull Mask that Mido made instead of the Prince's Mask.[75] During the Deku Festival, Link gives the position of the Fairy prince to Mido, choosing to play the part of the Monster instead.[76]
Ocarina of Time 3D (Himekawa)
The Kokiri briefly appear in the Chinese-exclusive Ocarina of Time 3D manga by Akira Himekawa. They are shown playing with Link on the branches of a Tree.
Hyrule Warriors
The Kokiri are absent in Hyrule Warriors, although the Kokiri Spear used by Lana as part of the Spear archetype of Weapons bears the Spiritual Stone of the Forest. The Spear archetype can also summon Deku Tree Sprouts. In Hyrule Warriors Legends, Kokiri Bands, Kokiri Cardigans, and Kokiri Shorts can be applied as Fairy Clothing.
Young Link uses the Kokiri Sword as his primary Weapon in the Mask archetype.
Culture
Because they do not age, the Kokiri largely retain their childish demeanors.[77][78] However, they do not necessarily consider themselves to actually be children.[79] Some Kokiri even express angst over their eternal youth, envying how tall and strong other Hylians grow to become.[80] In the Era of the Hero of Time, Mido establishes himself as a leader among the Kokiri by acting like a bully toward the other Kokiri.[81][82]
The Kokiri are assigned guardian Fairies by the Great Deku Tree.[83] These Fairies offer their wisdom to the Kokiri and protect them from harm on behalf of the Great Deku Tree.[84]

A Kokiri boy from Ocarina of Time 3D
Kokiri dress in simple green Kokiri Tunics. Kokiri girls tend to wear headbands while boys wear pointed caps. For footwear, the Kokiri wear simple Kokiri Boots. The Kokiri treasure their eponymous Sword,[85] which is kept safe in the Forest Training Center. The Kokiri make use of simple technology, such as Pots and other earthenware, Buckets, farming equipment, and rudimentary construction equipment. The Kokiri Sword is the only Sword available in the Forest, however.[86] They trade with Rupees at the Kokiri Shop, although they recognize that this is largely unnecessary because its supplies can be found in the surrounding Forest.[87]
While using his guardian Fairy to attack Link in the Ocarina of Time manga by Akira Himekawa, Mido explains that his Fairy is simply another part of him, comparing it to his appendages.[88] Unlike in Ocarina of Time, Link has no apparent conception of Money, which causes trouble for him when he enters Hyrule Castle Town.[89] Link is similarly unaware that the Kokiri do not age as he wonders why Mido is still a child after he himself grew into a young adult.[90]
Symbolism
The Kokiri are represented by a swirling pattern known as the Crest of the Kokiri. This pattern resembles the Spiritual Stone of the Forest, also known as the Kokiri's Emerald, which was entrusted to them to protect the entrance to the Sacred Realm. This Crest can be found throughout the Faron Woods across time, even when the Kokiri themselves do not appear directly. For instance, it can be seen in the Forest Temple during the Twilight Era, where no Kokiri can be found.
Members of the Kokiri who do not have a Fairy companion are ostracized and not regarded as "true" Kokiri.[91] Furthermore, Mido upholds a derisive sense of machismo, berating Link for not having a Fairy.[92] As the child of a Hylian with a destiny to leave the Kokiri Forest, Link was never given a Fairy companion. He earned the epithet of the "Boy without a Fairy" due to this.[10] However, after the Great Deku Tree is cursed by Ganondorf, the Great Deku Tree assigns Navi to be Link's companion to aid him in repelling the curse placed upon him and to realized his destiny as the Hero of Time.[10] With Navi accompanying Link, the other Kokiri recognize him as one of their own.[93] When Link returns to the Forest during the Adult Era, the Kokiri find it strange that a Fairy is following an adult.[94]
Religion
The Kokiri follow the Golden Goddesses and have sworn to protect the Spiritual Stone of the Forest,[1] which acts as one of the keys protecting the Sacred Realm. They also serve the Great Deku Tree, a powerful and ancient Spirit in the Kokiri Forest who gives them eternal youth.
As the Sage of Wind, Fado played music to call upon the gods.[95] Fado expresses his intent to continue his role even in the "next world", indicating a belief in an afterlife beyond existing as a Spirit after death.[96]
Geography
The Kokiri do not frequently make contact with people outside of their Forest, though other Hylian groups know of their presence and mistake them as Fairies.[1] Despite their seclusion, they have sworn loyalty to the Royal Family of Hyrule.[7][6]
The Kokiri have a superstition that they will die upon leaving their Forest,[97][98] based on the fact that they will begin to age once they leave the protection of the Great Deku Tree's Magic. After Saria awakens as the Sage of Forest, the Deku Tree Sprout is born from the roots of the late Great Deku Tree.[1] As the new Deku Tree, the Deku Tree Sprout is able to extend his Magic outside of the Forest, allowing the Kokiri to travel beyond the Forest.[1] Thanks to this, they take part in the celebration of Ganondorf's defeat at Lon Lon Ranch. Curiously, none of the Kokiri in attendance are shown with their guardian Fairies. During the Era without a Hero, a Kokiri named Fado served the King of Hyrule,[96] Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule, as the Sage of Wind at the Wind Temple, well beyond the boundaries of the Forest.
Within the Kokiri Forest, the Kokiri make their homes inside of hollowed Trees. They primarily sustain themselves on things they find in the Kokiri Forest.[1] For instance, the Fairy Slingshot is a tool used by the Kokiri, who pair it with Deku Seeds for ammunition.[1] For defense, the Kokiri make use of Deku Shields, small and crude wooden Shields that bear their Crest. To prepare for the dangers of living in the forest, the Kokiri train at the Forest Training Center.[99] Additionally, the Kokiri are able to communicate with each other across distances through the use of their Fairy companions.[100]
The Kokiri are protective of the forest and dislike when outsiders take from it.[101] They are attuned to the Spirits within the forest, and are able to sense when danger befalls the Forest Temple.[19][18] They are able to safely travel into the Lost Woods in spite of the danger that it poses to other Hylians.[102][103][104] Normally, children who get lost within the Lost Woods turn into undead Monsters known as Skull Kids.[105] Though he is not a true Kokiri, Link can safely travel the Lost Woods and find himself back at the Kokiri Forest should he get lost.[104]
Despite being Monsters, the Skull Kids of the Lost Woods are not hostile to the Kokiri. At some point, Saria befriended one of the Skull Kids and the two bonded over music.[106][107] The same Skull Kid still remembers "Saria's Song" when he speaks to Link after the Hylian saves the parallel world of Termina.[108]
When Termina was created from the memories of the Skull Kid and Majora's Mask,[109] some of the residents of Termina inherited the memory of the Kokiri.[110] Tingle in particular believes that he is a Kokiri and mentions that, similarly to Link's own upbringing in Kokiri Forest, he has yet to receive a guardian Fairy of his own.[30]
The Kokiri are known to the people of the independent kingdom of Hytopia, which was once part of the northernmost reaches of Hyrule Kingdom prior to the Decline of Hyrule.[111] If Link wears the Kokiri Clothes while speaking to the Stylish Woman, she will call him cute and ask where his Fairy is.[111]
Unused dialogue from a Kokiri in Ocarina of Time shows that they have an adversarial relationship with the Deku Scrubs,[112] who are infamous as troublemakers in their natural habitats.[1]
In the Ocarina of Time manga by Akira Himekawa, even the Kokiri are susceptible to disappearing within the Lost Woods.[113][65] As a result, Saria never befriended the Skull Kid.[114]
Members
While several Kokiri can be found in the Era of the Hero of Time, only a handful of them are shown with names. The only known Kokiri that remains during the Era of the Great Sea is a Spirit by the name of Fado.
Trivia
- Yoshiaki Koizumi is responsible for the idea of giving each Kokiri a Fairy companion. Because of hardware limitations on draw distances, it was easier to display Fairies at a distance until Link gets closer to them for the Kokiri to be loaded into the game.[115]
- Prior to Ocarina of Time's release, Shigeru Miyamoto claimed that the Kokiri are a race of elves who are born without parents and only reach a certain age before disappearing, making way for the next generation of Kokiri.[116] He also applied this to Link, claiming that he would disappear after reaching a certain age.[116]
- In the Japanese version of Ocarina of Time, talking to Saria while wearing Keaton Mask or the Bunny Hood makes her speak with a "ジャラ (jara)" sentence ending particle, in the same manner as inhuman races such as Deku Scrubs use "ッピ (ppi)" and Gorons use "ゴロ (goro)". She describes it as her "Kokiri accent".[117] The particle presumably comes from jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata), whose Japanese phonetic transcription is "ジャラ". A screenshot of a developmental Japanese build of Ocarina of Time shows Saria uses the "ジャラ" sentence ending particle.[118]
- The official Japanese site for Tri Force Heroes claims that Kokiri Clothes actually contain the soul of a Kokiri.[119]
Nomenclature
The name "Kokiri" may be an anagram of the Japanese word 木こり (Kikori), which means lumberjack. It could also a reference to the Lumberjacks from A Link to the Past, who reside in a forest.
