because noon shifts around the world
Noon Shift is an interactive map that compares local clock time with true solar time around the world. It visualizes how far a region's civil time has drifted from the sun.
My curiosity for this topic started after watching a video by University of the Netherlands "Why the Netherlands is in the wrong timezone (and why this is bad for your sleep)". They, in my opinion, very clearly broke down the matter of timezones and its relation to chronobiology. I roughly knew about DST (Daylight Saving Time), but was shocked to find out my local clock runs 1 hour and 40 minutes ahead of solar time. This, as expected, led me down the rabbit hole of trying to learn more about timezones, why they exist, solar time etc. I set out to create a simple tool that visualizes these differences between clock time and true solar time; this became Noon Shift.
