KARE (Kerala United Against Rare Diseases) is a comprehensive care programme initiated by the Government of Kerala to support individuals affected by rare diseases.
KARE focuses on:
- Prevention and early identification
- Provision of treatment wherever available
- Access to medicines, appropriate therapies, and assistive technological devices
- Home-based services and psychosocial support for parents and caregivers
As part of this initiative, the Government of Kerala became the first state in India to launch a state-funded treatment programme for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), which was formally initiated in March 2022.

Through KARE, we aim to raise ₹100 crore over the next 3 years to ensure uninterrupted care for existing patients and inclusion of other rare disease categories.
