Jimmy Buffett - Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes Live (1978-2008) (A Mike Solof Guest Post)

Here is another guest post by Mike Solof. I am putting words into his mouth, but I think what happened is that he Felt he really enjoyed the 1977 album "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes," by Jimmy Buffett. But after hearing it many many times, he wanted to hear it in a different way. So he collected live versions of all songs on the album and put them in the same order as the original. 

He managed to find live versions of all of the songs, with all of them in excellent sound quality. Most of them come from a year or two after the album was released, though a couple are from significantly later. None of the songs are extended, so don't expect drastically different versions. In fact, this album is a minute or two shorter than the studio version.

This was Buffett's breakthrough album that turned him into a big star, helped greatly by the conclusion of the hit song "Margaritaville." If you like the album a lot, you should enjoy this one.

Various Artists - Musical Salad, Volume 1 (1939-2025) (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

As part of this music blog's ongoing Brian Wilson Week, here's another tribute to one of the most original musical minds of the Twentieth Century. If we've got our dates right, this should be appearing on June 17th, which happens to be National Eat Your Vegetables Day in the United States.

The idea for this collection emerged during a late-night Discord conversation with Fabio from Rio, when preparing the "Covered: Brian Wilson" discs. While discussing Brian Wilson's wonderfully eccentric song "Vegetables", we started wondering whether anyone else had ever written songs about vegetables. What began as a joke I made quickly turned into a challenge taken up by Fabio. A few days later, he returned with a surprisingly long list of candidates, and before long we realized there might actually be enough material for an entire compilation – or two.

The result is "Musical Salad." It's a collection of songs inspired by vegetables, salads, and assorted garden-related culinary adventures. Some tracks are genuinely great, some are bizarre, some are funny (either deliberate or not), and a few somehow manage to be all three at once. Taken together, they form one of the strangest and most entertaining themed collections we've assembled so far.

Note that there are many many songs that have a vegetable or something vegetable related in the title. We decided that wasn't good enough. The song has to actually be discussing something vegetable-related in the lyrics.  Furthermore, it had to hold up musically as well. I know this concept may seem strange. But just as your parents probably told you when faced with eating an unfamiliar vegetable for the first time, "try it, you'll like it." I was skeptical at first, but I think these ended up being fun albums.

There is a second volume coming, hopefully tomorrow.

The cover image was made by Fabio, using AI. Furthermore, he went above and beyond and used an AI art generator to create a visual picture of each of the songs. I was skeptical of that at first as well, especially since I'm not a big fan of AI art, or really AI much of anything. But I have to admit these pictures that Fabio made for the songs turned out really well. In fact, they turned out so well that I told Fabio they make me fear for the future, because if AI can make one of these in a matter of seconds, I don't see how people will be able to stay employed as artists. But that's a discussion for another time and place perhaps. Here is a sample of one such picture. This one illustrates the song "Carrot Juice Is Murder." You can find an entire booklet that he made with these AI created pictures as well as descriptions of each song in the download zip file.

Covered: Brian Wilson, Volume 3: 2001-2009 (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

Volume 3 of "Covered: Brian Wilson" focuses on the first decade of the new millennium, a period during which Brian Wilson experienced something of a creative renaissance after spending decades being regarded as a "lost genius". He surprised the music world by returning to the long-abandoned "Smile" project, choosing to record and release an entirely new version with the Wondermints, and then touring extensively while performing the album in its entirety. This approach was particularly noteworthy because, contrary to popular myth, the original 1960s recordings had not been destroyed by Brian during some psychotic outburst; they had remained safely stored in Capitol Records’ vaults, awaiting the archival release that would eventually arrive a few years later.

Alongside Brian’s artistic rebirth came a fresh wave of tributes from both established and younger artists. Some approached his songs with a nostalgic or traditional sensibility, while others reimagined them through a more contemporary musical lens. Together, they demonstrated the remarkable adaptability of his compositions and their ability to resonate across generations and genres.

This volume contains many memorable performances, but one stands out as especially remarkable: Joss Stone’s rendition of "God Only Knows". It earned the distinction of becoming one of only two songs represented by more than a single performance in this collection.

The cover photograph comes from another period of renewal in Brian’s life: the late 1980s, around the release of his first solo album. At the time, "Doctor" Eugene Landy had assumed extraordinary control over both Brian’s personal and professional affairs, claiming to be guiding his recovery. As later documented in books, documentaries, and feature films, the results were far more complicated than they initially appeared.

Covered: George Harrison, Volume 4: 2004-2010

Here is the fourth out of six "Covered" volumes for George Harrison.

Unfortunately, before the start of the time period of this volume, Harrison had already died. (He died in 2001 all too young, at the age of 58.) That means he wasn't putting out any more new music. So for this volume and the next two, we're basically playing catch up, with covers from earlier parts of his music career, including going back to his years with the Beatles.

The first song here is a special treat. It comes from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in 2004, because Harrison was posthumously inducted that year. This version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" has a lot of stars peforming on it, including some I didn't include in the song title, due to wanting to keep it short, like Steve Winwood and Dhani Harrison. But what really makes this version stand out is the wild guitar soloing by Prince. A lot of people were impressed, as you can see by the fact the YouTube video is up to 140 million views when I'm writing this in May 2026. But this version remains unreleased. 

Generally speaking, I try hard to only include one version of each song in a Covered series like this. But every now and then, there are cases where I can't resist adding more than one. For this series, I have two versions of "Something" (on Volumes 1 and 2, by Shirley Bassey and James Brown). I also have two versions of "If I Needed Someone." I included the Hollies version of that song on Volume 1, because they had a hit with it back in 1965. It made the Top Twenty in Britain. That was Harrison's first hit song, actually. 

However, I'm including a second version of that song here, even though it's not one of his most popular songs. That's because in 2004, Roger McGuinn did a version of it. McGuinn used to be the main singer for the Byrds, and Harrison wrote the song with a very obvious Byrds influence. It was one he openly acknowledged from the start. He even sent McGuinn an advanced copy of the song, along with a thank you note. So it's nice to finally hear what the Byrds might have done with this Byrdsy song.

Klaatu - The Sampler Album (1976-2005) (A Mike Solof Guest Post)

Here's another Mike Solof guest post. This one came about because I was conversing with Mike, and the band Klaatu somehow came up. I mentioned that I'd heard of them, but I'd never gotten around to listening to their music. So Mike volunteered to enlighten me by making a sampler album containing what he considers the cream of their crop.

The band has a very unusual history. Probably their biggest claim to fame is that when their debut album came out in 1976, there was a widespread rumor that their album actually was a secret Beatles reunion album. Of course that wasn't true. But I can understand why some people believed the rumor, because the band had a Beatlesque sound. And I consider that a very good thing. If you like that style of music - and who doesn't? - you should give this a listen.

There's a lot more to this band and their history. But I'm not going to tell it here. For one thing, Mike has written extensive liner notes, which are included in the download zip, as is his wont. And you can also read Wikipedia for more:

I asked Mike why Woman is only a bonus track. Here's his response. "In case you are all wondering (and I know you all are) why I considered 'Woman' a bonus cut and not part of the main set, here's the answer (taken from Wikipedia): 'The trio very briefly reunited in 1988 at George Martin's AIR Studios in London with John Jones to record a single, "Woman," though no one was particularly happy with the results as the song was written by someone outside of the band (Paul Vincent Gunia) for the German television series Tatort. Initially, Long had wanted to merely use the Klaatu name, but could not get the rest of the band's approval without their involvement. The single was released only in West Germany and did not chart, making it an extremely rare item in the Klaatu catalogue; Draper confirmed that the song was considered for a few rarities compilations, but all three band members had agreed to not include the track.'"

Klaatu was a notoriously elusive band. For the band's first few years, there were no publicly available photos of them at all. They finally relented a bit in the early 1980s, when they briefly went on tour. So I think this promo photo dates from that time. The original was in black and white, but I colorized it with the use of the Kolorize program. Also, the background was just blank white. So I took some artwork of the pyramids from one of their album covers and put that in the background to make things look a little more interesting.

Michael McDonald & Friends - A Tribute to Motown, PBS Soundstage, Nashville, TN, 6-2005

Here is another episode of the great "PBS Soundstage" T.V. show. This one stars, Michael McDonald, but it has a bunch of special guests as well: Billy Preston, Toni Braxton, Take 6, and Indie.Arie. All the songs they performed are covers of Motown classics from the 1960s and 70s.

McDonald has been on the Soundstage show quite a lot. He was a key member of the Doobie Brothers when they hosted the show in 1979. He also hosted it in 2003 with some other guests. And he was a guest on an episode hosted by Kenny Loggins. And I believe he will be on at least one more episode that I have yet to post.

In this case, I would bet the show had him back because of the Motown theme to the episode, meaning that the songs were different from the ones he played on other episodes. At the time he was going through quite a Motown phase. In 2003, he released an all covers album just called "Motown," And in 2004, he released a sequel called "Motown 2." The special guests were not on those albums, with the exception of Toni Braxton. The duet she sang here with McDonald, "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)," also appeared as a duet on his "Motown 2" album. 

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

Chris Isaak - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 9-2005

Here is another album of an episode of the "PBS Soundstage" T.V. show. This one stars Chris Isaak. It seems the makers of the show really liked Isaak, because this was one of three episodes starring him. I can’t remember offhand anybody else who starred in three episodes of the show. All of them were in the early 2000s. To Isaak’s credit, he mostly played different songs in each episode, helped by the fact that one of them was a Christmas episode.

The music here is unreleased, and the sound quality is excellent.

Dionne Warwick - Dionne, Burt and Hal: The Definitive Songbook, Volume 7: 1987-2012 (A Mike Solof Guest Post)

I'm back from my two week vacation from Peru. It got off to a rough start due to the plane flight there, which I posted about. But everything else since then went great, with no more problems. :) I even had good weather the whole time, despite it being the rainy season there.

Here's the last album in a series that contains all the songs written by Hal David and/or Burt Bacharach and sung by Dionne Warwick. Though note that there's a bonus album of sorts still to come that will be explained later.

As I mentioned in Volume 6, the Bacharach-David songwriting partnership broke up around 1973, and they didn't collaborate for a long time after that. The second half of Volume 6 consisted entirely of songs written by Bacharach and another successful songwriter, Carole Bayer Sager. (In fact, Bacharach and Sager were married for a few years around this time). 

The Bacharach and Sager collaboration continued for a little while. The first songs are from a 1987, and are all co-written by those two. One song, "Love Power," was a hit. After that, there are a bunch of songs from 1989 to 2011, one song per year with many years skipped. "Sunny Weather Lover" from 1993 is a key song here, because it's the first song Bacharach and David wrote together since about 1972. However, that was a rare collaboration. Their songwriting partnership didn't reignite after that. (They also co-wrote two songs for the 2000 movie "Isn't She Great," but Warwick didn't sing them.) Furthermore, both of them were simply getting older and didn't write songs nearly as often as they used to. 

So the rest of the songs were written by Bacharach with others or David with others. For instance, "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" was a Number One hit in the U.S. for Christopher Cross in 1981, and was written by Bacharach with Sager and two others. Track 101 is an unreleased live version by Warwick recorded in 2005.

The last four songs are from a 2012 album called "Now." It was billed as a celebration of Bacharach and David songs. However, it mostly consisted of rerecordings of old hits. The four new songs, presented here, were written by either Bacharach with others or David with others. For instance, "99 Miles from L.A." was written by David with Albert Hammond, and was a hit for Hammond in 1975. 

Hal David died in 2012, so that ended the chance for any more songs written by both of them. Bacharach died in 2023.

While I was on vacation, a commenter noted that a song, "(Theme From) The Valley of the Dolls" was included on Volume 4 of this series, despite neither Bacharach nor David being involved in writing it. Now that I'm back home, I was able to repost that album with that song removed. That also means that the numbering of all the songs after that has been fixed as well. So you might want to redownload Volumes 4, 5, and 6 if you're a stickler about such things. Also, since I had complaints about the cover art for Volume 1, I've posted an alternate version of the cover at the bottom of my write-up for that album that uses the original black and white photo, in case anyone wants that.

Various Artists - Covered: Neil Young, Volume 5: 2005-2007

Here’s another “Covered “ Neil Young. Since I’m on vacation, I’ll keep this short. Once again, Fabio from Rio wrote some notes, so here they are:

 By the mid-2000s, Neil Young had fully achieved something rare in popular music: he was simultaneously a living legend and an active creative force. His catalog had by then become a kind of common language shared across genres. Indie rock bands, folk revivalists, alternative country singers, and even pop performers were freely exploring different corners of his songwriting. Meanwhile, Young himself continued releasing ambitious work, from the politically charged "Living with War" to the reflective "Prairie Wind."

The covers gathered in this volume illustrate how widely his influence had spread. Younger artists approached the songs with fresh sensibilities, sometimes transforming well-known classics into intimate acoustic performances, while others revived deeper cuts that had long been favorites among the devoted "Rusties." In several cases, the reinterpretations reveal how remarkably adaptable Young's compositions are: sometimes, the same song can thrive equally well as a folk lament, a rock anthem, or a stripped-down indie confession.

Various Artists - Covered: Neil Young, Volume 4: 1999-2005

Here’s the fourth album in the Neil Young covered series. Once again, thanks to Fabio from Rio for doing most of the work. I also want to mention that I have a long list of songwriters that I want to make Covered albums for. Many of the biggest ones, like Dylan, Lennon-McCartney, Jagger-Richard’s, Ray Davies, etc… are still to come. I’m sure I wouldn’t have gotten around to Young for a couple more years. But Fabio’s involvement and energy brought this one to the front of the line.

Here are Fabio’s comments about the time period of this volume:

By the turn of the millennium, Neil Young's songwriting had become a shared reference point for several generations of musicians. Musical artists from the folk revival, alt-country movement, and indie rock scene were all revisiting different eras of his catalog - from the fragile acoustic songs of the late sixties to the electric epics recorded with Crazy Horse. During this period, Young himself remained remarkably active, releasing albums such as "Silver and Gold" and "Greendale" while continuing to tour extensively. The covers gathered here reflect that generational dialogue: younger singer-songwriters, Americana performers, and alternative rock musicians rediscovering both famous classics and some of the most obscure corners of Young's songwriting.

U2 - BBC Sessions, Volume 9: In Concert, Twickenham Stadium, London, Britain, 6-18-2005

Just two days ago (writing this in mid-February 2026), I posted a "BBC Sessions, Volume 7" for U2, a 1993 concert that I'd previously missed. A commenter noted US also did a 2005 concert that was broadcast for the BBC. I looked it up, and sure enough, that person was right. So I decided to get and post this one ASAP, because I was forced to do some renumbering. I had just renumbered the three albums in this series that come after this. I have renumbered them again. I hope most people hadn't had time to get that previous renumbering yet. And let's hope this renumbering sticks. If someone now tells me there was a 1982 concert U2 did for the BBC that I'd missed, I'll be tempted to go have a good cry!

Although my last U2 post was only two days prior to this one, there's been big U2 news in the meantime: they unexpectedly dropped an EP called "Days of Ash." This made a lot of headlines, because the songs addressed some current political topics. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about it: "Produced by Jacknife Lee, the six-track EP contains five new songs, including protest songs addressing the killings of Minneapolis woman Renée Good, Iranian teenager Sarina Esmailzadeh, and Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen, as well as a poem by Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai set to music. It is the first collection of original songs the band released since their studio album 'Songs of Experience' in 2017."

In other U2 posts, I've complained that the quality of the band's new songs has slowly gone downhill since the early 2000s. So I was very pleasantly surprised by this new EP. It helps that I agree with their political stances. But I think purely on a musical level, this is the best new music they've released in years. So I encourage you to check it out.

Anyway, back to this album. In 2005, U2 was still riding high, promoting 2004's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," which I would argue was their last solid album. (At least so far - this new EP gives me hope.) That album has their last big hits (again, at least so far), especially "Vertigo." So this contains the best songs from that album, plus classics from their earlier albums.

The BBC broadcast most of this concert, but not all of it. Apparently, the first time, the broadcast began around the start of "City of Blinding Lights," the ninth track, and then continued until the end. You can even hear lead singer Bono talking about this before that song begins. 

Later broadcasts included some of the earlier songs, but not all of them. Only three songs were missing: "The Electric Co.," "New Year's Day," and "Beautiful Day." I managed to find an audience bootleg for just those three songs. I did what I could, using the MVSEP program to split off the lead vocals and then run them through a filter to lessen the echo. I also used that program to get rid of the crowd noise during those songs. That helped some, but they still don't sound as good as the rest. However, they sound decent, or I wouldn't have included them.

Oh, also, I noticed the vocals were a bit low in the mix. So I ran all the songs through MVSEP to fix that as well. 

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent, with a partial exception of the three songs I mentioned above.

Elton John - Cover Versions, Volume 5: 2002-2007

In 2023 and 2024, I posted four volumes collecting all the cover versions performed by Elton John that I could find. However, I stopped this series before finishing it because I ran into copyright issues with the fourth volume. But I've had way less of those issues in recent months, so I'd going to try to post the fifth volume. If that works out, the sixth and final volume will follow. But you might want to grab this quickly, just in case.

Tracks 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8 are all unreleased, and from concerts. Out of those, tracks 2 and 3 are from a CMT Crossroads episode with Ryan Adams. Track 9 was also performed live, but it's from a tribute album to Luther Vandross. For all these live songs, I used the MVSEP program to wipe the cheering, so those songs would fit with the studio tracks.

That leaves the studio tracks, all of which are released. Those are from a mix of movie soundtracks, tribute albums, and duets done on albums by other musical acts. If you want more details, please look at the mp3 tags for the individual songs. Like always, I include the source info for each song on every album I post.

Dionne Warwick - BBC In Concert, Mermaid Theatre, London, Britain, 9-4-2005

Here's a BBC concert for Dionne Warwick. She's had a very long career, starting in the early 1960s and continuing to this day as I write this in 2025, but this seems to be the only concert that she did for the BBC, at least as far as I can tell.

It's too bad this wasn't from earlier in her career. But in terms of song selection, it basically was. I'm pretty sure that every single song here is from the early 1960s until the early 1980s, which was her long hit-making era. And, not surprisingly for her, the vast majority of the songs were written by the remarkable songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

After a long spoken intro over some music, the rest of the concert is practically one long medley, with almost no breaks between songs. But she alternated between performing truncated versions of some songs and full versions of other songs.

This is another album where I must thank musical friend Progsprog. I didn't know this existed, and it doesn't seem available on the Internet. But he had it and sent it to me. 

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

Various Artists - Covered: Joe South: 1962-2005

Lately, I've had so much music I'm discovering, especially from "Midnight Special," "Ultrasonic," Live at the Record Plant," and "PBS Soundstage," that my Covered series highlighting worthy songwriters has fallen by the wayside. Again. But I'm going to make more of a concerted effort to post more of these, since a have a big number ready to go. Here's an album celebrating the songs of Joe South.

Joe South's songs were very popular for a few years in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was born in 1940 in Atlanta, Georgia, and his music has an obvious southern influence. He began a career as both a performer and a songwriter in the late 1950s, when he was in his late teens. For many years, he only had minor success with both of those pursuits. The first song here is from 1962, and the second is from 1965. But then he hit his stride in 1968, when more people started covering his songs, and sometimes having big hits with them. For instance, Deep Purple had a big hit with "Hush" in 1968 (which was pretty atypical for them compared to their usual hard rock sound).

Then, in 1969, he had a big hit of his own, "Games People Play." It just missed the Top Ten in the U.S. singles chart, and since then is probably considered his signature song. Then he had another in 1970, with "Walk a Mile in My Shoes," which also just missed the Top Ten. I've chosen to include the Joe South version of "Games People Play." But the main point of this series is to focus on cover versions, so that's the only song I've included that's performed by him. 

In 1970, he also had his biggest success as a songwriter with "(I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden." It was first released by Billy Joe Royal in 1967, and there were a couple more covers after that. But when Lynn Anderson released her version in 1970, it went all the way to Number One in the country chart, and Number Three in the main U.S. singles chart, and became one of the best selling songs of the year. 

After all this success in just a couple of years, his future looked very promising. But then tragedy struck. Tommy South, his brother, committed suicide. Tommy had been in Joe's backing band, and they two of them were very close. Joe irrationally blamed himself for the suicide. He sank into a deep depression that lasted for years, and started taking heavy drugs to cope. His time as a promising songwriter basically ended at that point, as he lost his inspiration for many years. He later said, "I really kicked myself around for years... one of the main hang-ups was I just refused to forgive myself. You know, you can go through drug treatment centers, and it's not a permanent healing until it's a spiritual healing." He finally turned his life around in the late 1980s, but musical trends had largely passed him by, and he never released any new albums after 1975. All the songs here were written before that 1971 tragedy, though some of them were covered many years later. 

He died of a heart attack in 2012, at the age of 72. Here's his Wikipedia entry if you want to know more:

Garbage - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 8-23-2005

Here's another episode of the TV show "PBS Soundstage." This time, it features the band Garbage.

I'm happy to post this because I think Garbage are a good band. Their debut album "Garbage" in 1995 was a smash hit, selling four million copies in the U.S., and they've gone on to sell 14 million albums worldwide.

This concert took place when they were on tour to promote their 1995 album "Bleed like Me." It was a good time for an episode of this TV show, because that has been their last album that sold well. So all of their best known songs are performed here.

Heart - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 7-28-2005

Here's an unusually long episode of the "PBS Soundstage" TV show, featuring the band Heart, from 2005.

The actual TV show edited down performances to fit an hour long time slow. But this is sourced from a DVD, so it includes the entire concert. It includes all of Heart's best known songs, as well as some that were relatively new at the time. Just a year prior to this concert, the band released their first studio album in over ten years, "Jupiters Darling." It was well received by critics, perhaps because they skipped their 1980s "adult contemporary" sound, and went back to more of their 1970s classic rock sound. The following songs come from that album: "Oldest Story in the World," "The Perfect Goodbye," "Lost Angel," "Fallen Ones," "Make Me," "Things," and "Enough."

Ever since Heart was formed in the 1970s, they've had a strong fondness for the band Led Zeppelin, and often covered their songs. I've even put together an entire album of Heart covers of Led Zeppelin songs, which I've posted at this blog. This continues on this concert, with no less than three Led Zeppelin covers: "The Battle of Evermore," "Black Dog," and "Misty Mountain Hop."

America with Christopher Cross - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 3-24-2005

Here's another episode of the great TV series "PBS Soundstage." This one features the band America.

Note that there's a guest star on this, like there are on many episodes of this show. This time, it's Christopher Cross. However, his role is relatively minor compared to other guest appearances on the show. He didn't sing any songs on his own. Instead, he helped sing two big America hits, "Lonely People" and "A Horse with No Name."

When the band was formed in 1970, it consisted of three singer-songwriters: Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell, and Dan Peek. But Peek left in 1977 never to return, concentrating on a career with Christian music instead. So by the time of this concert, the band was a duo of Beckley and Bunnell. By 2005, their hits were long behind them and they'd turned into a well-honed oldies act. They would have a comeback with a well-received new album in 2007, but that hadn't happened at the time of this concert.

So one gets all the expected hits from the band's heyday in the 1970s and 80s. Although this show is unreleased as an audio album, it has been released on DVD, which is why this episode is longer than the show's usual one hour time. The sound quality is excellent.

Various Artists - MusiCares Tribute to Brian Wilson, Hollywood Palladium, Hollywood, CA, 2-11-2005

As I mentioned in my last post, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys died a few days ago as I write this, on June 11, 2025. He's such an important musical figure that I considered it a must to post something in his memory. I did a little Internet browsing, and came across mentions of this tribute concert. However, I could only find a few songs from it, far from the whole thing. But luckily I've recently been getting some assistance from Fabio from Rio, who is a big Brian Wilson / Beach Boys fan. It turned out he had the DVD of this. He then figured out how to convert it to audio format, and sent it to me. So here you are. Earlier today, I posted an album that pays tribute to Brian Wilson created by Fabio, but two tribute albums is better than one.

MusiCares is a non-profit charity that is connected to the organization that runs the yearly Grammy music awards. Since 1991, they've been giving out a yearly award, MusiCares Person of the Year. They have a benefit concert celebrate the music of that person. It takes place in the same town and week as the Grammy awards, so lots of music stars are there to perform on stage or at least attend. The money raised from the benefit concert (and other activities) goes to an organization that helps struggling musicians, for instance those who are having medical trouble or drug addiction and can't afford treatment.

It seems that bootlegs of these yearly MusiCares concerts are basically non-existent. The audiences are relatively small and are mostly made up of music industry insiders who aren't likely to secretly tape record the show and then share that with the public. However, a handful of the concerts have been officially released on DVD. These are generally rare and already out of print. But I've managed to find most of them, concerts for: Paul Simon, James Taylor, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, and Bruce Springsteen (plus this one). I plan on posting all of those here eventually. I know of two more that exist: Barbra Streisand and Carole King. I'm not that interested in the Streisand one, but I'd be very interested in the King one, if anyone has that. (Or, heck, if anyone has any of the other concerts not on DVD!)

I do want to mention though that I'm very disappointed this isn't the complete concert. Almost complete, but a couple of songs are missing, at least. One song that got left off the DVD, and thus left off this album, is a performance by Neil Young of the Beach Boys classic "In My Room." It seems to be the one and only time Young ever publicly performed this song, so it's a real loss. Another one that wasn't included is a duet between India.Arie and Brian Wilson on the even greater classic "God Only Knows." If anyone has either or both of those, please let me know so I can add them in.

Thanks again to Fabio from Rio. I looked everywhere and couldn't find this, so I was very pleasantly surprised to find he had it. After he sent it to me, I broke the audio into mp3s. So I think it's a safe bet that this is the first time this full concert is being shared in an audio format.

Various Artists - Songs in the Key of Brian - Remembering Brian Wilson (1975-2021) (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

One of the all-time great musical geniuses, Brian Wilson, died a few days ago, on June 11, 2025. He was 82 years old. I wanted to post something to mark his passing. Luckily, I've recently been collaborating with a new musical friend, who goes by the name Fabio from Rio. He's a big fan of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, and came up with the idea of creating an album consisting entirely of songs about Brian Wilson. So that's what this is. I gave him free reign, and only helped him some with suggestions on song selection.

I would have never come up with the idea for this album, because I had no idea that there would be enough songs about Brian Wilson to make up an entire album. I knew of the song "Brian Wilson" by Barenaked Ladies, since that was a hit back in the 1990s, but that was about it. But Fabio must be a really big fan, because he found so many songs that we had to cut some out to keep the album from getting too long.

The album starts with a rare demo written and sung by Wilson himself. It also ends with two more written and sung by him, including a rare live version of "Love and Mercy." Fabio explained the reasoning for this in an email, which I liked. I'll just paste in his explanation here:

"The Wilson tunes are bookends, as they serve to introduce and close the 'main event' (all the tracks written to him or about him) while bringing a personal Brian touch to the collection. The first song, a 1975, demo works as a prelude (acknowledging Brian's fragility and strength both simultaneously contained in his voice), 'The Last Song' is the epilogue, and 'Love and Mercy' is a coda." 

Regarding the rest of the songs, what Fabio calls the "main event," tracks 2 through 13, are basically divided into two parts. Tracks 2 through 8 are direct tributes to Brian. That's obvious by their titles, but it's not just that: the lyrics and musical style ooze reference and admiration for the man. That's followed by tracks 9 through 13, which are indirect tributes to Brian, or direct tributes to things related to him (the Beach Boys, his health shop, girls, his genius, family), all mentioning him either in the title or lyrics.

So, a big thanks to Fabio from Rio for coming up with the idea for this album and then finding and selecting the songs. As you could guess from the name, he's Brazilian, and hopefully in the future he'll be able to assist in sharing more music from Brazil. I like a lot of music from Brazil, despite not speaking Portuguese at all. I haven't really shared any music from Brazil until now, because I don't have worthy rarities. But he does, so look forward to that in the future. He also has some other plans, including creating one or more albums as a further tribute to Wilson that will consist of songs in a Beach Boys style composed by other musical acts.

The Wallflowers - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 5-3-2005

I'm posting episodes of the PBS TV show "Soundstage" in more or less random order. This time, the Wallflowers came up. If you're not familiar, the best known fact about the Wallflowers is that the band's lead singer and songwriter, Jakob Dylan, is the son of music legend Bob Dylan. It's easy to hear the connection in their similar voices. But Jakob wasn't just coasting on his father's fame, because the band has done a lot of good music, including a few hits that could be considered classics.

The Wallflowers are best known for one album, "Bringing Down the Horse." Released in 1996, it sold four million copies in the U.S. alone, more than any album by Jakob's illustrious father. This concert took place in the same month as the release of another album, "Rebel, Sweetheart." The album got some critical praise, but unfortunately by this time the sales had dropped greatly compared to 1996. Most of the songs performed are from that album, with some better known songs from earlier albums mixed in. Unfortunately, two of the band's biggest hits, "6th Avenue Heartache" and a cover of David Bowie's "'Heroes,'" are not included here.

Despite being unreleased, the sound quality is excellent, and there were no problems. The length does seem about five minutes short compared to most other episodes from around this time though, so I wonder if a song is missing.
