Suzanne Vega - Cover Versions, Volume 2: 1997-2022

Here's the second and final volume of cover versions performed by Suzanne Vega. As I mentioned in my write-up for Volume 1, she's very rarely put any covers on her studio albums, but she's done some in concerts and in non-album projects. This completes all the ones I could find.

Most of the songs here are officially released. But there are four unreleased ones: "Blowin' in the Wind," "The Man Who Sold the World," "Femme Fatale," and "Dreaming." All of those come from concert bootlegs.

As for the officially released ones, three of them - "Behind Blue Eyes," "Solitaire," and "Have You Met Miss Jones" - are from a DVD called "Live at Montreux 2004." Three more are from a rarities album simply called "Rarities." That leaves three songs, which are from different "various artists" compilations.

By the way, in late 2025, Vega released a new studio album, "Flying with Angels." I think it's very good. If you haven't given it a listen yet, you should. I've been wanting to post a concert of her performing songs from that album, but I haven't come across anything with worthy sound quality yet.

Covered: Brian Wilson, Volume 5: 2017-2026 (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

Finally, we arrive at the last volume of this "Covered" project, bringing Fabio’s "Brian Wilson Week" to a close just in time to celebrate what would have been Brian’s 83rd birthday on June 20, 2026. (He died on June 11, 2025.)

This volume focuses on more recent performances, spanning the years 2017 through 2026. In fact, the final track was released only a few weeks before this post went online. Together, these recordings provide yet another illustration of Wilson’s enduring influence across multiple generations of musicians.

One track deserves a bit of additional explanation, as it touches on a subject that some readers may find controversial. Dae Lim’s version of "Let’s Put Our Hearts Together" is a hybrid creation that combines archival material, original recordings, and a degree of AI (Artificial Intelligence) assistance. Dae recorded new vocal parts and worked with existing Beach Boys-related material, using AI-based tools to help blend timbres and stylistic elements in a way that evokes the sound of a classic Beach Boys recording. The result is something akin to uncovering a previously unheard Beach Boys tape based on fragments and possibilities rather than a genuine lost master. Whether one embraces or rejects that approach, the results are certainly intriguing and worth hearing.

Note also, I have a policy of only including one version first song in these Covered projects. However, for Wilson, Fabio and I couldn't resist, including two versions of possibly two of his greatest creations, "Good Vibrations" and "God Only Knows." The second version of "Good Vibrations" is here, while all the other ones are included in earlier volumes.

If there are any Brian Wilson songs that you feel we should have included and we didn't include, please let us know. Sometimes we can make additions after the initial posting. But keep in mind there are some excellent Beach Boys songs that were not written or written by him. Perhaps at some future point we might make a covered album for the other Beach Boys.

Various Artists - Musical Salad, Volume 2 (1939-2025) (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

Here is the second volume of "Musical Salad,"a collection of songs about vegetables. For real. 

As I mentioned with the release of "Musical Salad, Volume 1," this project began as one of Fabio from Rio's eccentric ideas, supported at first by my cautiously skeptical encouragement. But after we finished "Volume 1," I have to admit I was already looking forward to a second helping.

Nearly all of the songs in "Volume 1" were found by Fabio. But for this volume, I went digging and found a majority of these ones. As with the first volume, Fabio really went above and beyond the usual call of duty, making an artistic booklet with text, talking about each song and including an illustration for each song, made by AI. (He wrote all the text however.) I also provided ideas and suggestions for many of the illustrations generated with the help of Fabio's AI-assisted artwork process.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, I have concerns about the use of AI. For instance, I have been careful to never include any music made by AI in this blog. But the AI artwork made for this booklet was just too good not to include. In fact, it's kind of "scary good," since it can do what a human can do for practically no cost in just a tiny fraction of the time.

At any rate, as I mentioned in the write up for the first volume, the songs here had to actually be about vegetables in some way and not just have a fitting title. So for instance, we didn't use the song "Vegetable Man" by Pink Floyd, because all of the lyrics reference clothes and fashion, with just a mysterious line in the chorus, "Vegetable Man, where are you?" That may well refer to someone being a mental vegetable and have nothing to do with actual edible vegetables at all.

But now that we are posting the second volume, if you can think of any fitting songs that are worthy of inclusion for a possible third volume, please let us know. I thought that we had pretty much found all the good ones that fit, but already we've had a few suggestions in the comments for valuable one that look promising. I could easily see a third volume, including more of the fun artwork, if we can just find enough songs that keep up the standards of the first two volumes. 

Also, if you have suggestions for other theme, albums, similar to this one, please let us know. I doubt I would spearhead any project like that (since I have my hands full with so many other albums I want to post already), but there's no telling what kind of off the wall ideas that might appeal to Fabio. In fact, I already get the feeling that he is thinking about other food related albums, so if you have some suggestions for songs along those lines, please let us know about those too.

Covered: George Harrison, Volume 6: 2015-2025

Here's the sixth and last "Covered" album for George Harrison.

Most people love the Beatles, and pretty much all their songs. So all of the songs Harrison wrote that were done by the Beatles have gotten good cover versions in this series. But, with the exception of his very popular album "All Things Must Pass," his solo career has gotten much less attention, and thus fewer covers. I've strived to include covers of all the songs I like from him. I couldn't always find even a decent cover, but I was successful most of the time.

In my opinion, Harrison was a very fascinating songwriter. On one hand, being in the Beatles, he learned from Paul McCartney and John Lennon how to write very catchy and poppy melodies. But on the other hand, he had a natural tendency to write songs with unusual and complicated chords. This led to Lennon repeatedly complaining how difficult it was to learn how to play Harrison's songs. On Harrison's best songs, he somehow managed to combine being catchy and poppy with unusual and complicated chords and other musical moves. That's not easy to pull off. 

But unfortunately, that has been another big reason many Harrison songs haven't been covered that much. He almost never wrote three or four chord songs. Out of the six volumes, this is the one where I have the most of his obscure and rarely covered songs, usually from his solo career. That's because, when looking for cover versions, my last resort is to find unreleased versions by lesser known musicians on YouTube. Most of those have taken place in the last ten years or so (as I write this in June 2026). Songs that fall into that category on this volume include "Nowhere to Go," "Cosmic Empire," "Poor Little Girl," "Miss O'Dell," "Beautiful Girl," and more. However, I always maintained quality control. There are a few more Harrison songs I wanted to include where none of the cover versions I found were good enough, in my opinion.

Two of the songs here have "[Edit]" in them. For "Circles" by Pete Zolli, there was some drumming on the song that I didn't like. Something about it seemed off. So I used the MVSEP program to remove the drumming. I thought the song was better that way. And for "Miss O'Dell" by Christopher Clause, this is a nice song, but little known, since it only ever came out as a B-side. So I didn't have many covers options. The version by Clause is very good. However, it was something he did live in the studio and then posted on YouTube. And in the live version, he kept making brief talking asides during the instrumental parts of the song. I thought all that talking was unnecessary and distracted from the song, so I used MVSEP to get rid of that, and just keep the singing.

It's very sad that Harrison died as young as he did. It's also a shame, from a musical point of view, That from 1982 until his death in 2001, he only put out two albums of new songs. We could have had so much more music from him. But at least what he did was usually of a high quality. His Beatles songs will never be forgotten. But I hope this series helps people better appreciate the songs he wrote in his solo career as well.

Covered: Neil Young: Alternates, Volume 4: 2016-2026 (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

In recent days, I've been posting four alternate "Covered" album by Neil Young. As I explained previously, I mostly picked the songs in the ten volume "Covered" series for him. But these four are the turn for guest poster Fabio from Rio to make the picks. This is the fourth and last of those alternates.

There's not much else to say that I didn't say in previous write-ups. However, I'll reiterate that, for these four alternate volumes as a whole, about half the songs are different versions of songs on the original ten-volume "Covered" series, and the other half are songs that didn't get included there. But I'd say on this volume, only a few are unique, like "Ramada Inn," "Hey Babe," and "Human Race." And there actually are two versions of "Pressure" in these alternate albums, and none in the original 10-volume series.

If you want to know more, please read Fabio's notes, included in the download zip. In short, he feels Baez's songwriting has been underappreciated. As such, you don't see a lot of famous musical acts covering her songs. But just because someone isn't well known, that doesn't mean their cover version isn't good.

Various Artists - Covered: Neil Young, Volume 9: 2020-2022

Here's the ninth volume of the "Covered" series for Neil Young. We're getting near the end, with only one more volume after this. Once again, thanks to Fabio from Rio for doing most of the work putting this together. Here's Fabio's summary of this time period:

The early 2020s brought an unexpected new chapter in the long afterlife of Neil Young's songs. During the Covid pandemic years, musicians around the world turned to home recordings, livestream performances, and online collaborations. In that environment, Young's catalog proved once again remarkably adaptable: intimate acoustic songs worked perfectly in stripped-down home recordings, while his electric epics continued to inspire roots-rock and Americana bands. At the same time, Young himself remained a visible cultural figure, both through the expanding Neil Young Archives project and through public debates about streaming platforms and artists' rights. The covers in this volume reflect that moment: a mixture of independent artists, online collaborations, and established performers revisiting songs from every phase of Young's long career.

Bettye LaVette - Soulville - Non-Album Tracks (2017-2023)

I've been posting a few Bettye LaVette albums lately. Here's another one. It's another collection of non-album tracks, from 2017 to 2023. This gets us caught up to current day, since I didn't find any non-album tracks worthy of inclusion since 2023.

Six of the songs here are unreleased: tracks 2, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 12. All of them are from concert bootlegs. They generally come from tribute concerts. I removed the audience cheering from all of them so they'd fit in better with the studio tracks.

Tracks 1 and 3 come from the deluxe edition of "Music from The American Epic Sessions." Track 4 is from the Todd Rundgren album "White Knight." Tracks 8 and 11 are from tribute albums. For more details, look at the mp3 tags for each song, as usual.

Diana Ross - BBC In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-26-2022

Here's Diana Ross performing a set at the annual Glastonbury Festival. It's the only music I've found from her performed for the BBC.

This was the only time Ross has performed for the festival. In 2022, when this concert took place, she was 78 years old. Unfortunately, I think she might have waited a little too long, because her vocals made me wince a few times. I wonder if that's due to age, or if she doesn't have the kind of voice needed to fill massive venues like this one, or some combination. But in any case, the vocals might be a bit off sometimes, but she performed classic after classic. She's sold over 100 million records in her music career, both as part of the Supremes and then in her long solo career.

This is another album I wasn't actively looking for, but I saw that musical friend Prosprog had it, so I decided what the heck, why not post it. Just like the Lionel Richie one I also posted today, I saw that it has been available as a massive video file. But this might be the first time it's being shared as an audio bootleg, I'm not sure.

Various Artists - Covered: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Volume 3: 2012-2024 (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

Here is the third and final "Covered" album celebrating the songwriting of Antonio Carlos Jobim.

I didn't get around to writing about the basics of Jobim's life with the first two volumes in this series, so let me do that now. Jobim was born in 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the 1940s, he made a living playing piano in bars and nightclubs in Rio. His first song to be recorded by someone happened in 1953. But he didn't have significant success until 1958, when Joao Gilberto recorded what would become one of his most famous songs, "Desafinado (Out of Tune)." Then, in 1964, he really hit it big with "The Girl from Ipanema." A version of that song by Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto reached the Top Five in the U.S. singles chart. But its success went way beyond that. In fact, it has become the second most recorded song of all time, behind only "Yesterday" by the Beatles.

This song led many people to discover not only other songs written by Jobim, but songs from Brazil in general, especially bossa nova music. For a couple of years, there was a sort of bossa nova craze in Western countries, especially in the jazz world. Jazz musicians in particular fell in love with Jobim's songs, because they were both musically complicated and interesting while being tuneful and catchy. Many of his songs became standards. Looking at the website secondhandsongs.com in 2025, which tallies cover versions, I count 34 songs written or co-written by Jobim that have been covered over 100 times. It may not sound like a lot, but that's a crazy amount. By comparison, only 18 songs by Bob Dylan have been covered over 100 times. Or consider Carole King, one of the most successful songwriters of all time. Only eight of her songs have been covered over 100 times.

Jobim released several dozen albums, with about half of them being collaborations with other famous musicians. He often collaborated with singers, since he wasn't much of a singer himself. His own albums didn't sell that well, but his collaboration albums often did. Overall, he had much more success with other musicians covering his songs.

He died in 1994 at the age of 67. As a result, all of the songs here are from well after his death. Most of them were written in the 1950s to 1970s, and it just so happens these are the versions that Fabio from Rio and I liked the best (since all three of these albums were put together by Fabio and myself). As with the two previous volumes in the series, the focus was on songs sung in English, when in fact there are even more covers of his songs in other languages, especially Portuguese, which is spoken in his home country of Brazil.

Thanks again to Fabio of Rio for his helping putting this Jobim albums together. I already had plans to make Covered albums from Jobim on my own. But they wouldn't have been nearly as good without Fabio's input, since he's much more familiar with this type of music than I am.

I don't know when it was taken, but I'd guess it's from the 1990s, because the two of them collaborated on a song around then which was released in 1996. The original version was black and white, but I colorized it with the help of the Kolorize program.

Today, I updated the links for most of the Midnight Oil albums posted here, for various reasons. While doing that, I got to wondering what they were doing lately. I found out they say they performed their last tour in 2022, but they're still open to doing more studio work. I had assumed they would release a live album from that tour, but they haven't. So I found this, which I think is the best bootleg from that tour.

This bootleg stands out because it's a combination of an IEM recording and an audience bootleg. "IEM" stands for "in ear monitor," and it's usually an audio feed meant to help the band members hear themselves, being broadcast directly into earpieces they wear. Soundwise, it's usually like a great soundboard boot. But it can have flaws, such as not including much crowd noise. So mixing in an audience boot can take care of that. In short, this sounds fantastic, the kind of sound one would expect from an official live album.

In 2002, Midnight Oil broke up after being together since the early 1970s. The band's lead singer Peter Garrett then pursued a political career in Australia. He was elected to Parliament, then went on to first be Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, and then Minister for Education. But in 2017 he returned to music and Midnight Oil went back on tour. In 2022, they released, "Resist," their first studio album since 2002. After a short tour in Australia, this was the first show they performed on the tour in North America. This concert includes four songs from the "Resist" album: "At the Time of Writing,"
"Nobody's Child," "Rising Seas," and "Barka-Darling River."

This album is exactly two hours long.

Various Artists - Gershwin Prize for Popular Song Honoring Lionel Richie, D.A.R. Constitution Hall, Washington, DC, 3-9-2022

In the past couple of weeks, I've posted some award ceremonies from the (mostly) annual Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. I've found some, and I'm still looking for others. I put out a request from him, and a kind commenter here named Berni found this one for me. So thanks very much to Berni for that. In 2022, it was Lionel Richie's turn to win the prize.

I'm not going to go into Richie's career here. Suffice to say that he's sold over 100 million records, making him one of the best selling musical acts of all time. And if you're wondering why Richie has won this prize and the likes of Bob Dylan haven't yet, keep in mind the word "popular" in the title of the prize. They're basically awarding the most successful, not necessarily the most critically acclaimed.

The recording of this concert is different from all the other Gershwin Prize ones I've heard so far. Richie was awarded the prize after just two songs sung by others. Richie gave his acceptance speech at that point. Then, after some more songs sung by others, Richie returned to perform a couple of songs at the end of the concert. For all the others, the winner of the prize was given the prize at the end of the concert. I don't know if this is the correct order or if the song order was redone by someone for some reason. But in any case, this is what we have, and I don't have any proof it happened otherwise, so I'm keeping it like this.

Everything here is unreleased. The sound quality was pretty good. However, I noticed all the vocals were mixed pretty low. So I fixed that with the use of the UVR5 audio editing program.

As an aside, there are two more Gershwin Prize concerts that I'd especially like to find, those for Smokey Robinson and Carole King. But it turns out one can only listen to them if one has a PBS Passport, AND one lives in Wisconsin! Here are the links.

Norah Jones - Tryin' to Keep It Together - Non-Album Tracks (2020-2023)

Here's another collection of non-album tracks from Norah Jones.

The Covid pandemic dominated 2020 until 2022. During that time, Jones kept quite busy with frequent home concerts. She played enough unique songs in those concerts for me to post two albums of those (as well as all of his home concerts in full). This avoids all of that in other to avoid duplication. Additionally, during this time she hosted a podcast and played even more unique songs. I'm avoiding all those as well. Hopefully those will be the subject of a future album or two posted here, though she also has released an album of highlights from her podcast, called "Playing Along."

The first two songs are bonus tracks from her album "Pick Me Up Off the Floor." Tracks 3, 4, 7, 8, and 10 are unreleased. All of those are from concerts, though most of those were not in front of audiences due to the Covid pandemic at the time. For the two that did have audience applause, I got rid of that using the MVSEP program, so they would better fit in with the studio tracks.

Tracks 5 and 6 are bonus tracks from her 2021 Christmas album, "I Dream of Christmas." The song "I Dream of Christmas" was co-written by Jones, so it's a bit strange it was only a bonus track for the album that was given the same name as the song. Track 9, "Steer Your Way," is from a Leonard Cohen tribute album. The last two are also from a concert, but an officially released one, celebrating Willie Nelson's 90th birthday.

Sheryl Crow - Nobody Told Me - Non-Album Tracks (2020-2022)

It's time for another stray tracks album from Sheryl Crow. Actually, I only need another song or two and I'll have enough to get caught up to present day. So I hope that'll happen soon.

After a 2019 album, "Threads," Crow said she was done with putting out albums and would switch to releasing singles instead. She hasn't entirely kept to that, since she released another album in 2024. But she has released fewer albums than before, and she also has released some songs only on singles. There are three single A-sides here, tracks 3, 9, and 10. Additionally, "Still the Same" is another original, released on a compilation album. Tracks 4, 5, 7, and 11 are from appearances on albums by other musical acts. 

That just leaves the unreleased songs. There are four of those, tracks 1, 2, 6, and 8. The first three were live but without an audience, because this was during the Covid pandemic, when home concerts were happening instead of concerts in front of crowds. For the tracks with audience noise (tracks 4 and 8), I removed the cheering with the MVSEP program so it would fit in with the studio tracks.

Brandi Carlile - Cover Songs, Volume 9: 2022-2023

A couple of days ago, I posted a Brandi Carlile set from the 2025 Glastonbury Festival. That reminded me that I had fallen behind posting cover song albums from her. So I searched the Internet and found enough material for this album. Also, I'm only a couple of songs short for the next one, so hopefully that'll happen soon.

Also, before I talk about the content on this album, note that in recent days I went through all of the earlier albums in this cover songs series and got rid of the applause on the songs that had applause, using the MVSEP program. So you might want to redownload those, because that often makes the songs sound clearer, especially in cases where there's a steady stream of audience noise through the songs.

Furthermore, I recently went through all the Dusty Springfield "On TV and Radio" albums, and used the same technique to get rid of the audience noise there as well. That was a big project, because there are 12 of those albums. And while I was at it, I redid most of the album covers using the Krea AI program, including some outside of that series. So you might want to redownload those as well.

Now, let's turn to the content of this album. A few of the songs here are officially released. They generally come from Carlile's appearances on the albums of other musical acts, and they are covers of songs first done by those acts. Those are "How" by Marcus Mumford and Brandi Carlile (which actually is cowritten by Carlile), "You're Gonna Go Far" by Noah Kahan, "Thousand Miles" by Miley Cyrus, and "Dear Insecurity" by Brandy Clark. The only other released song is "Closer to Fine," done for the 2023 "Barbie" movie.

The rest all are unreleased. All of those come from concerts, and are versions of famous songs. For those, I used the MVSEP program to get rid of as much of the crowd noise as possible, so the live tracks would fit in with the studio ones. 

This album is 48 minutes long.

Various Artists - Homeward Bound: A Grammy Salute to the Songs of Paul Simon, Hollywood Pantages Theater, Los Angeles, CA, 4-6-2022

I've recently discovered a bunch of tribute concerts. I find these really interesting, but they seem to often slip through the cracks in terms of being shared bootlegs. So I'm going to try to make posting these a higher priority. Here's a Grammy-related tribute to Paul Simon from 2022. It took place just three days after the annual Grammy Awards ceremony that year, and in the same city, so many of the stars who attended that could attend this one as well.

It goes without saying that Simon is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, so he deserves a tribute like this. In fact, I've found a MusiCares tribute concert from 2001 and a Gershwin Prize tribute concert from 2007 both celebrating his songs that I plan on posting too. Like those, this one features many big stars playing his most beloved songs.

It also features Simon performing a couple of songs of his own at the end of the concert. This is especially significant because he was 80 years old at the time of this concert, and his voice was noticeably weakening with age. He announced a farewell tour in 2018, so this seemed like one of his last public performances. Since then, though, he decided to have one more tour in 2025, with about 20 concerts. Be that as it may, one can hear the change in his voice in this performance. Thankfully, he realized his limitations and had another singer tackle the vocally challenging song "American Tune" while he just played guitar on it.

The music here remains officially unreleased. However, it was broadcast on television, so there are video files of it. I took a high quality version, converted it to audio format, and broke it into mp3s. The sound quality is excellent. I kept most everything, except I cut out some talk from the unnamed female emcee every time there was a commercial break, which happened every few songs. Hopefully this now sounds seamless, without any hints of those commercial breaks.

Some of the banter between songs were little speeches by famous non-musicians, such as Woody Harrelson, Dustin Hoffman, and Oprah Winfrey. Famous rock star Elton John also only talked. In his case, his talk was a video broadcast, so he probably didn't sing as well because he wasn't there in person.

This album is an hour and 24 minutes long.

John Fogerty - Weeping in the Promised Land - Non-Album Tracks (2013-2022)

I recently got a request from a commenter to post more of my non-album track albums by John Fogerty. I only have one more by him before we get to the present day, more or less. So here it is. (And by the way, I still have lots of these stray track albums to post by various musical acts, but they've been on the backburner compared to BBC albums and other things recently.)

In 2013, the year of the first song in this album, Fogerty was 68 years old. In 2022, the year of the last song in this album, he was 77 years old. As I write this in 2025, he still has a strong voice and plays lead guitar very well, but it's obvious his songwriting creativity has slowed way down. He hasn't released an album of new original songs since 2007. So the songs here mostly consist of cover versions, plus acoustic versions of songs from earlier in his career, with only a couple new originals ("The Holy Grail" and "Weeping in the Promised Land").

The first song, "Sharp Dressed Man," is a ZZ Top song done with Billy Gibbons, the lead vocalist and lead guitarist in ZZ Top. Both Fogerty and Gibbons sang and played lead guitar on it. It's unreleased, from a bootleg. "New Orleans" is a cover of a 1960s hit performed in concert for a Dr. John tribute album. "Give Peace a Chance" and "In My Life" are John Lennon songs done for a Lennon tribute concert in 2015. They come from an official album of highlights of that concert. Tracks 5, 6, 11, and 12 are unreleased acoustic versions of hits Fogerty had earlier in his career, mostly from when he a member of Creedence Clearwater Revival. They're from radio or Internet shows. "Long as I Can See the Light" is particularly interesting since it was played on piano instead of guitar as usual. 

"Love and War" is a song performed with country star Brad Paisley from his 2017 album, also called "Love and War." "I Won't Back Down" is a cover of the classic Tom Petty song. This is from an concert bootleg, and the sound quality is a little poorer than the other songs. "The Holy Grail" is a single from 2018, and "Weeping in the Promised Land" is a single from 2021. 

"With a Little Help from My Friends" is a cover of the Beatles song from the 2019 official live album "50 Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks." However, it is done in the same style as Joe Cocker's famous hit cover version. "Walk, Don't Run," is a cover on the famous instrumental hit by the Ventures. Fogerty only performed it once in concert, on January 22, 2022, because it was done in honor of the lead guitarist for the Ventures, Don Wilson, who died earlier in the day. Finally, "The City of New Orleans" is yet another cover song of a classic, done from a various artists collection of train songs in 2022.

Darius Rucker - CMT Storytellers, Worldwide Stages, Spring Hill, TN, 8-29-2022

I recently found two "CMT Storytellers" albums I considered worthy of posting. The first was Brooks and Dunn. This, the second one, is Darius Rucker.

Like with Brooks and Dunn, I'm not much of a fan of Darius Rucker. But also like with Brooks and Dunn, I know there are plenty of people who are fans of his music, and I'm trying to post all the at least decent Storytellers albums I can find.

Rucker first hit it big with his band Hootie and the Blowfish in the 1990s. Their 1994 album "Cracked Rear View" went on to sell more than 22 million copies worldwide! But by the end of the 1990s, the band faced declining sales. None of their albums went gold (meaning selling half a million copies) - a far cry from their earlier success. 

Starting in 2001, Rucker began transitioning into a solo career in country music. He never entirely gave up Hootie and the Blowfish, and still occasionally performs with them, but his solo career soon became his main focus. That's because he's found a lot of commercial success with that too. For instance, he's had nine Number One songs on the U.S. country singles chart. One song, a cover of "Wagon Wheel," sold about four million copies in 2013.

This concert has him mainly in country mode. However, he played a couple of his biggest hits with Hootie and the Blowfish too: "Let Her Cry" and "Only Wanna Be with You."

I had to make a lot of edits to make this sound like one coherent concert. I faced the usual problems of the applause getting cut off too early and having to get rid of snippets of songs from later in the show, meant to keep people watching right before going to commercials. But it should sound good now, I hope.

Note that as I write this in December 2024, there have been four additional episodes of "CMT Storytellers," three in 2023 and one in 2024. They featured:

I don't think I'm going to find and post any of those shows. None of them really interest me. For instance, a couple of them fall into the "bro country" sub-genre, which I try to avoid. Plus, I don't think they're nearly as popular as either Brooks and Dunn or Darius Rucker. But if anyone thinks I'm wrong, let me know. I have to admit I didn't look into them very closely either.

Brooks & Dunn - CMT Storytellers, Worldwide Stages, Spring Hill, TN, 3-25-2022

I have to confess I'm not much of a Brooks and Dunn fan. However, I made a vow to post all the "VH-1 Storytellers" concerts I could by musical acts that are at least decent, and this country duo makes that bar. 

Technically, this isn't a "VH-1 Storytellers" concert. That TV show basically died out in 2012. But it's basically the exact same thing, same storytelling format, except it's on the CMT (Country Music Television) channel instead of the VH1 channel. Both channels are owned by the same mega corporation (Paramount). So the show was revived in 2022 with the twist that all the new episodes feature country music acts.

The duo was formed when Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, both struggling singer-songwriters in the country genre at the time, decided to join forces. Their debut album as a duo went on to sell six million copies in the U.S. They had success after success after that, with a total of 20 songs that reached Number One on the U.S. country singles charts. They broke up in 2010. But they've had numerous reunions since then, including this one.

I faced some of the exact same problems when I was putting together VH-1 Storytellers albums. For instance, the applause was often abruptly cut off at the ends of songs. And snippets of songs played later in the show were played earlier in the show, right before commercial breaks. I had to do a lot of editing to smooth all that over and get this to sound like a continuous concert. I hope I succeeded.

Bettye LaVette - Millennium Stage, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC, 6-1-2022

Here's an unreleased concert by soul singer Bettye LaVette. 

I'm posting it for three reasons. One, she'd backed by just a piano player, so it's basically a solo acoustic concert. That's a very unusual format for her, and one I particularly like. Two, I found this as a YouTube video, and as far as I know it's never been made available as sound files until now. Finally, three, it's a professionally recorded web broadcast, so the sound quality is excellent.

At the time of this concert in 2022, LaVette's most recent album was "Blackbirds," released in 2020. She was still touring to support that, so most of the songs come from that. But about half of the songs come from earlier albums. However, maybe because it's only an hour-long concert, only one songs goes back to her 1960s singles, "My Man - He's a Lovin' Man."

In my opinion, LaVette is one of the most soulful singers still alive and kicking, and she definitely still has her "it" factor here.
