Nothing went right.

What went wrong - easier to write what went right.
I did the Highlights of Spain Tour on the 18/08/2026. We met at the VPT bus terminal and this "person" met us - jeans on, top that looked scruffy, long grey hair hanging done and never even introduced herself.

I was immediately appalled as I have been travelling for 20 years and never in that time had I met a tour guide so miserable and lacking in personality. All the storied about tourists being not welcome I now believe. Things only went down from tat first meeting, she had zero personality, zero care for the people that she was MEANT to look after and zero interest in us. I had to ask her what her name was. After she took our names we were told to go over and get on the bus, it was a mini van which had seen very very better days but I was hopeful as it was a Mercedes. We were the first to arrive in a group of less than 15. The seats in the van were so small I was unable to do up my safety belt the entire ride which was 5 days due to the small nature of the seat and had to sit on a single seat as there was only just enought for one each.

The poor gentleman behind me was very tall and he had to sit twisted with his legs in the aisle - his knees came up well past my seat. I spoke to the "guide" and asked if he could at least sit up the front so he had more room and she said no - why because she was swanning round in the front two seats all comfortable and nice.

The trip that first day to Seville was horrific, we travelled in 42°C heat and after we had been to Cordoba, the air conditioning was not working and we had little to no air in the bus. The driver had to keep turning the air conditioning off as it drained the power and we crawled up hills at 10kms per hour.

We had 2.5 hours locked in the bus without a break at that temperatue. No water as their was a no drinking sign on the bus. We were all pretty unwell by the time we got to Seville.

I talked to the "guide" the next morning and told her it was unacceptable and that we would not be going on the tour as the thought of spending time in that small van was something I would not do. My travel buddy and I decided to do our own thing that day - we heard they had been given a bigger bus. The day we were to head to Costa Del Sol we were all horrified at the though of getting back in the van however it had been to a shop and had some work the day before so we were all hopeful. After speaking to the "guide" the morning before about the van and the lack of stops and water she told me that we could drink water it was only coffee etc in case we split it. She said that she told us but NO ONE heard her say it. I took over "guide" duties and told eveyone to drink water.

The trip off to Costa Del Sol was an improvement, the temp was not so hot and the power seemed to be back in the bus for a short time. However the next day on journer to Ronda, we swapped to a big bus, everyone was much happier for the rest of the travel.

The hotel accommodation was poor to say the least, very basic rooms and the room in Seville was filthy. I wiped some water in the bathroom I had spilt with the bath mat and it turned brown, I just could not believe that a large hotel was so bad. My travel buddy had a hole in the ceiling above her shower - all in all a very grotty stay. And it was so far out of Seville we needed to get a mini van to the train station and thn train into Seville which we did and enjoyed it.

The next hotel was alot better - the rooms had just been renovated but the food was not great. hotel on the beach so the night time was lovely with the sea and being able to walk in the Atlantic for me was a thrill and bucket list item.

The last hotel in Granada was by far the best and in a great location where we could walk everywhere.

BUT the farewell meal was also a disappointment, the food was not great and the one spanish speaking tour guest was dumped with all us English speaking people and left to fend for herself with no converation during the meal. the "guide" and bus driver ate seperately and I guarantee they did not have our food.

We all were so thankful to have local guides at the stops because they wer all great and enthuasiastic.

It was a shame we were dragged off for lunch on the last day in Toledo because we all really loved it and would have liked some more time there.

Again lunch was a disappointment when we had that beautiful town to get lost in.

Certainly I would not really recommend this tour to anyone - it was not great - however the people we met were great and we are thankful that we met them.

When we got back to Madrid, we were dropped in the middle of the street and even before we had got our bags off the road, the "guide" and her bus driver pulled off leaving us on the side of the road to make our own way to our destinations.

One thing I do have to say, while the hotels were not great the staff were good and very accommodating when I needed some assistance.

All in all out of 5 I would not even give 1/2 a star.

Sun island tours provided great service throughout my Greek island tour. It was well organised and the tour guides were very informative of sites visited along the way.
Sunquest organisers overseas were prompt at helping when it was required and were great at organising transport and extra tours when required ensuring all was on schedule and safe.
I would recommend sun island tours for anyone wishing to travel the Greek islands and learn some history along the way.
Thanks for a great experience, I had a fantastic time.

Do NOT book with Sun Island Tours (I beg you)

Do not book with Sun Island Tours. I want that first and foremost, because I wish someone had said it to me and my family.

In late February 2026 we were told, with no warning, that our Egypt tour had to be paid in full and up front. We paid it. The direct deposit went to our local travel agent at midday on the Thursday.

By the Saturday, war had broken out in the Middle East. Two days after our money left our account, on a weekend, when nothing could be actioned and nobody could be reached. That same weekend was also, as we were LATER told, the Nile cruise cancellation deadline.

Monday was the first business day we could act. We were standing in the travel agent's office at 9:00am, in person. Less than 12 business hours had passed since we paid. We asked to cancel and we asked for either a full refund or a full travel credit. We were told the decision was not the agent's to make. It went to Sun Island Tours, and whatever we got back was entirely at their discretion.

Sub Island Tours REFUSED. What they put in front of us was a partial refund that was nowhere near acceptable. Fractions of what we paid.

In the weeks that followed, all three of our airlines cancelled our flights and refunded us in full, without argument due to the war.

Three separate airlines worked out that this trip could not go ahead. Sun Island Tours refused as apparently our safety was not their main concern - money was. There was no way to get to Egypt and no way to get home again, and they kept the money regardless.

Understand what this was. We did not change our minds. We did not find something cheaper. A war started. Flights were pulled. The country we had booked a tour through had become a near neighbour to a conflict escalating by the day. None of it was in our control, and none of it moved them.

Also, the money situation was EXTREMELY insulting. It left our account two days before the conflict began, with a weekend sitting in the middle of it. Anyone who understands how payments actually settle knows exactly what that timeline suggests. Did they even receive the money in that time??

We have been shown nothing to prove every dollar had genuinely cleared and been irreversibly committed to suppliers before the situation changed. They have never had to prove it, and they have never offered to.

From start to finish their focus was on what the cancellation terms allowed them to keep. Not once was there any attempt to reach a fair outcome for customers caught in an international crisis nobody saw coming. That was a choice, and they made it deliberately.

They are sitting on a substantial portion of more than $21,000 for a trip that a war and a wave of airline cancellations made impossible.

I would not book with Sun Island Tours. Their bottom line is profits, not your safety!!

I would not let anyone I care about book with them. Before you hand this company your money, ask yourself how you would want to be treated when something goes seriously wrong overseas. We found out. 0 out of 10.

Reply from Sun Island Tours

Dear Kyren,

We note that this review concerns the same booking, travelling party and cancellation dispute that has already been reviewed separately on Trustpilot by another member of your party.

As several of the statements made here give a very different impression from what actually occurred, we would like to clarify the key facts.

Firstly, Sun Island Tours did not retain more than $21,000. Thousands of dollars were refunded to your party after we worked extensively with the various suppliers to recover as much as possible and negotiate reductions to cancellation charges. Sun Island Tours’ own non-refundable deposit was only $300 per person. The substantial unrecoverable amounts related to third-party supplier cancellation conditions, particularly the Nile cruise component.

At the time your party asked to cancel, the booking was already subject to full supplier cancellation fees. Despite this, we continued to work with the suppliers to reduce those charges and recover whatever we could.

It is also important to clarify the position regarding the flights. When the cancellation was requested, your international flights had not been cancelled. Egypt remained open to travellers and airlines continued operating services into Egypt.

Your party subsequently advised us that the airlines had cancelled your flights. We repeatedly asked for evidence confirming that the specific flights booked for your journey had in fact been cancelled, as this could have been used to approach the suppliers again and seek further consideration. That evidence was not provided to us in a form that established the booked flights had been cancelled.

It is therefore not accurate to suggest that the trip had become impossible because your airlines had already cancelled your flights when the decision to cancel was made. At that point, the services remained operational and travel to Egypt was still possible.

Nor was this a case of simply applying cancellation conditions and walking away. There were approximately 139 emails between Sun Island Tours, the travel agent, suppliers and your party, together with numerous telephone conversations, as we worked through the booking, cancellation and negotiations with the various suppliers.

As a travel wholesaler, our usual booking and communication relationship is with the travel agent. Despite this, I personally corresponded directly with members of your party, provided detailed explanations regarding the supplier charges and refunds, offered to discuss the matter further by phone, and repeatedly invited you to provide evidence of the specific airline cancellations so that we could take this back to the suppliers.

We refunded all amounts we were able to recover, negotiated reduced charges wherever possible, and offered to approach suppliers again where there was any possibility of further recovery or credit. We also advised that we could provide supporting documentation for a travel insurance claim if required.

Ultimately, the correspondence was brought to a close at your party’s request.

We fully understand that the escalating situation in the Middle East caused concern and respect your decision not to travel. However, it is not correct to suggest that Sun Island Tours retained more than $21,000, that no meaningful effort was made to assist, or that your flights had already been cancelled when the decision to cancel was made.

Our own retained amount was only $300 per person, and our team worked extensively with the suppliers to recover as much of the remaining money as possible under very difficult circumstances.

Be very cautions

⭐️ I would strongly caution anyone considering booking with Sun Island Tours.

We paid more than $21,000 for an Egypt tour just two days before war broke out in the Middle East in March 2026. On the first available business day, approximately 12 business hours later, we requested cancellation and either a full refund or travel credit.

Sun Island Tours refused both and offered only an $8,000 refund, stating that the remaining funds had already been paid to their suppliers in Egypt, despite the fact that our $21,000 payment was transferred on a Friday.

In the following weeks, all three of our airlines cancelled their flights and provided full refunds, ultimately making it impossible for us to travel to Egypt.

We were not cancelling because we had changed our minds. We were responding to an unforeseen international crisis and escalating conflict completely outside our control.

What disappointed us most was the lack of flexibility and goodwill shown by Sun Island Tours in these extraordinary circumstances. We felt the focus was on enforcing cancellation conditions rather than finding a fair and reasonable outcome for their customers.

Based on our experience, we cannot recommend Sun Island Tours. We encourage anyone considering booking with them to carefully consider how cancellation requests may be handled when circumstances arise beyond their control.

Reply from Sun Island Tours

Hi Rob,

We’re sorry that you remain disappointed with the outcome, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding travel at the time. However, there are several important points in your review that we need to clarify.

Sun Island Tours did not retain the majority of the amount paid. Our own retained amount was only a small non-refundable deposit, which covers the work involved in making and subsequently cancelling the booking. The substantial cancellation charges came from third-party suppliers and were applied in accordance with their booking conditions.

In particular, the Nile cruise company charged the cruise component in full, which was entirely outside our control. The supplier did not ultimately charge for the internal flights themselves, and we were also able to negotiate a significantly reduced cancellation charge with EgyptAir.

It is also important to clarify the timing surrounding the airline cancellations. When you initially asked to cancel your Egypt arrangements, your international flights had not been cancelled by the airlines. Egypt remained open and operational for tourism, airlines continued operating services into Egypt, and the Australian Government’s Smartraveller advice remained at Level 2.

You subsequently advised us that your airlines had cancelled your flights. We repeatedly asked for evidence confirming that the specific flights booked for your journey had in fact been cancelled by the airlines, as this would have allowed us to take that evidence back to our suppliers and seek further consideration on your behalf.

This was certainly not a case of simply applying cancellation conditions and walking away. There were approximately 139 emails between Sun Island Tours, your travel agent, our suppliers and your party, together with countless telephone conversations with your travel agent, as we worked through the booking, cancellation and negotiations with the various suppliers.

We refunded all amounts we were able to recover, negotiated reduced charges wherever possible, offered to approach the cruise supplier again regarding a possible future credit, and advised that we could provide supporting documentation for a travel insurance claim if required.

We completely understand that the situation in the Middle East caused you concern and that you ultimately decided you did not wish to travel. However, at the time you requested cancellation, the trip itself had not been cancelled, Egypt remained open to travellers, flights were continuing to operate, and the services forming your booking remained subject to the cancellation conditions of the individual suppliers.

Rob, we genuinely regret that we were unable to achieve the outcome you wanted. We do, however, believe our team made considerable efforts over many months to recover as much as possible for you and to achieve the best available outcome in very difficult circumstances.
