Texas, amirite?

Dwight emails news from the Lone Star State:

Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office say a homeowner shot a man suspected of peeping and inappropriately touching himself outside of his 10-year-old daughter’s window.

[snip]

“She looks over at the window and this guy is at her window,” the girl’s mother, who does not want to be identified, told KPRC 2. “I can’t say that he tried to take my daughter’s innocence away -- he took my daughter’s innocence away.”

This mother heard her daughter scream and she and her husband rushed out of the house with guns to confront the man. They are both licensed handgun carriers.

[snip]

The couple followed the man to the Valero gas station across the street. As the 10-year-old’s father went inside to tell the clerk to call 911, his wife stayed outside with the suspect.

“He is wrestling with me, with my gun, and I’m like, ‘I’m not going to let you get my gun, you are not going to kill me or shoot me,’” she said. “My husband just said he heard a ‘ca, ca,’ but by that time the guy had already grabbed me, got my gun and pulled it on myself.”

That is when the woman said her husband shot the man.

Now IANAL, and think that justice was served here, even if it was rough justice.  Actually rough justice might be exactly what this sort of situation calls for.  But Miguel questions whether this is a deadly force situation.  It seems to me (remember IANAL) that the parents escalated the situation that resulted in gunfire.  Like Miguel, I hope that no charges will be brought.

But everyone should remember that a CCW permit is not a Justice League membership card.

But, but, but - he was an Islamic Scholar

Err, one that burns captives alive.  But don't ask the Washington Post, because they want this news to die in the Darkness ...

One of these things is not like the other

I was driving back to Castle Borepatch, listening to the rush hour traffic/news/talk.  The news, as you would imagine, was about the attack at Ohio State.  While the story did not include the words "radical" "islam", "jihad", or "terror", it did tell us that some Somali immigrant drove a truck into a crowd of students and then stabbed a bunch of them before finding himself on the naughty end of a police officer's gun.

The story was very careful to say that we don't know the attacker's motivation, and so speculation is presumably double plus ungood.

Then the story launched into a discussion of the Virginia Tech shootings.

Wait, what?

The story did not talk about the attack in Nice, France a few months back.  You know, the one where some dude drove a truck into a crowd and then stabbed some of them before getting shot.  That seemingly is not at all similar to the OSU attack.  But the Virgina Tech incident seemingly is similar, at least similar enough to be included as a "hey, doesn't this remind you" comparison.

Never mind that the Virginia Tech incident did not have an immigrant as the perpetrator, did not include a truck running people down, or a finale of shabby-stabby.

If you were as nasty and cynical about the Press as I am, you might think this was used to distract people from "dangerous jihadi immigrants are killing people" to "guns are bad, mkay?"

But since you're obviously not as nasty and cynical about the Press as I, this sort of Thought Crime clearly would never cross your mind.

Analysis of the Laquan McDonald shooting by the Chicago Police

Eric Raymond does an analysis of the video:
The fast version: I would have said this was what cops call a “good shoot” if it had stopped at the first two bullets. It didn’t. I don’t think this was murder one, but it was at least criminally negligent homicide and those who covered it up should be prosecuted along with Van Dyke.
This is a very thoughtful post on when deadly force is justified and when it - sometimes suddenly - turns into unjustified deadly force.  This is important reading for anyone who carries, so RTWT.

As a bonus, there's a link there to his analysis of the Michael Brown autopsy results and what it likely means about the shooting.  Short version: completely justified in that case.

A Playlist for when "He Needed Killin'"

I have all sorts of thoughts on the Bureau of Land Management standoff in Nevada, but tonight was a (blessed) moment of relief from the cares of the last few weeks.  #1 Son and I walked to the local pub for a quick libation.  It turned out to be dead slow, and so we ended up having quite a good chat with the barman and the barmaid.  Not sure how it came up, but we got to the subject of "What would be a good playlist for the Air Force guys to play as they fire the Hellfire missile at the Taliban?"

Like I said, it was slow.  Everyone contributed, and it was a fun bar room conversation.  As a break from Wookie-suited rants, I humbly offer it up for your approval.  Feel free to add yours in the comments.

My suggestions:

Live And Let Die.  I always thought this would have been a good one to play over the intercom of the B-52s unleashing Holy Hell over Tora Bora.  Likely they don't/can't do that, but this was the dream.  Sure wish they had the opening credits to the film for this video, because it was awesome.

Give me back my bullets. Just because it scans better than "gimme back my depleted uranium projectiles.

32 - 20 Blues.  Because you don't get more 'Murican than blues.

The barmaid had an interesting list:

You Rascal You, Hanni El Khatib cover of the Louis Armstrong song.  That has extra irony points.

Weapon Of Choice by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.  You need to hear more than that?

The barman had some great choices:

Bombs Over Baghdad.   More for younger listeners than me, but duh.

That Was Just Your Life.  A bit pensive in the opening, but gets to the whole "A-10 Minigun strafing run" feeling.  And quite frankly, that was just your life, Jihadi ....

Symphony Of Destruction - Megadeth.  Somehow, operatic metal seems to have a plethora of great choices here.

And it goes on and on.  This could actually be a decent playlist for riding your motorcycle.  Feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments.  JayG, I expect you have some great Metal additions ...

We now return you to the wookie-suited rants ...

A pack, not a herd

The news report of the kidnapped woman rescued by her family is a masterful piece of understatement:
Arceneaux's cousin approached the home, kicked in the door in and entered, [Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Department Captain Kip] Judice said. Inside, he found Thomas with the woman. Thomas then began stabbing Arceneaux, and a confrontation ensued.
"The cousin, who was armed, began firing several shots at Thomas," Judice said. "After a couple of shots, [Arceneaux] was able to get free of him and they escorted her out of the house."

...

Meanwhile, officers who heard the gun shots fired surrounded the home, Judice said. Upon entering, they found Thomas' lifeless body on the ground. He had sustained several gunshot wounds.
Thomas' cause of death is not known, Judice said.
Lead poisoning?  A terminal case of he needed killin'?  Holes that let the air in and the blood out?  I'm just guessing, of course.
No charges have been filed against the man who shot Thomas, and it is unlikely that the man will be charged, Judice said.
I'll bet they want to pin a damn medal on him.  That's a hero, right there.

And what's interesting is that this piece of vigilante justice is reported in approving tones by ABC News.  We're winning.  Armed self defense of other people has seeped into the mainstream.

I've created a new tag in honor of this post: Righteous killings.
