Good morning tooters. It was a warm humid night last night & I kept the aircon on until nearly 4am 🫤. It did guarantee me a half decent sleep though & when I got up just before 6am it was still 24c. Today the high won’t be too bad reaching 31c it’s quite pleasant outside. All the doors & windows are open & there’s a very light breeze around & today is still quite cloudy.
I haven’t watered yet, but the humidity would have kept things damp’ish anyway. I will do that job when I get home from the pool later this morning. I have double checked the weeks program & the lane availability & all lanes are open yaaay. So I’ll be on my way there in less than half an hour. Really looking forward to that lovely cool water as well.
Hope you all have an enjoyable stay cool out there 🌻.

        THIS WEEK’S WEATHER —

Brief Transitional Week – Much Needed Rain by Friday

I'll call this week transitional: a transition from cold and dry to more seasonable temperatures and two possible chances for much needed rain. Unfortunately, there's the possibility of a reversion back to snow and cold by late Sunday. ... theweatherguy.net/blog/?p=26139

            Dear Senator / Representative --

I would like an explanation as to why the high-powered supercomputing facility used to run advanced forecasting and climate models is being (according to this Republican Administration) "transferred to an outside entity."

This supercomputer is essential to forecasting extreme weather and dangerous aviation turbulence, and it is used by roughly 1,500 researchers from more than 500 universities nationwide.

This supercomputing facility, which was paid for using my tax dollars, is essential for simulating weather systems and testing forecast models — work that ultimately helps improve the accuracy of the forecasts Americans rely on daily.

I want this supercomputer facility remain in public, not private hands. Please tell this Republican Administration to cease any planned transfer. Pass legislation keeping this critical facility in government hands.

Hurricane Hunter Gulfstream IV jet "Gonzo" is making another 6+ hour flight today returning to Portland. So I have once again fed an automated translation of the flight plan waypoints into Karl Swartz's Great Circle Mapper online tool to make a map image. They have been doing winter atmospheric river observations out of Portland for 2 weeks so far. Hopefully this will collect data they want for computer forecasting models. gcmap.com/mapui?P=c:%230fff3f,

The bandwidth limit I was referring to is that of wttr in
The owner has put up an amount per day that is allowed to be used. People who come in on Port 443 via browser get much much lower priority than people who come in through curl. The browser response uses more bandwidth from the server, which makes the decision logical

US weather prediction supercomputer reportedly being transferred to an unknown "third party", per NY Times. This is not a "climate change" supercomputer, it's one of the supercomputers used to run the US weather prediction models. 😬

Science foundation officials said stewardship of the supercomputer, located at a National Center for Atmospheric Research facility in Cheyenne, Wyo., would “transition to a third-party operator” but declined to give details about the new operator or the timeline.

The national center, known as NCAR, has 835 scientists and engineers at its headquarters in Boulder, Colo., and has managed the Cheyenne facility since it opened in 2012.

Trump admin is pulling supercomputers out of key weather and climate research center

A leading American research lab is slated to lose its critical supercomputing facility, according to a letter released Thursday by the National Science Foundation.

The move is part of the Trump administration’s effort to disassemble the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, one of the world’s top weather and climate research centers, which the admin views as a source of climate change alarmism.

The computing center, which is slated to be turned over to an unspecified third party, runs weather and climate research models and is used by about 1,500 researchers from over 500 universities around the country. The work done on this supercomputer benefits the American people by leading to more accurate forecasts of extreme weather and climate events, aircraft turbulence and more.

Why top 25? Hey, it's my account, my nonsensical rules. We'll count down to #1 in terms of length because size matters.

Although one of the most recognizable rivers in eastern Canada, and one that drains the largest watershed on the planet, it doesn't make it into the top 50 longest rivers in the country.

Light lake effect snow, not more than an inch or two accumulation, but blowing and drifting. The zoo where I work has closed for the day due to the cold, so I've got the day off. I'm hunkering down for a quiet afternoon, with a warm blanket and relaxing music and a library book and some hot coffee, listening to the wind whistling around the house.

The ground is covered with drifted snow, so that the driveway, street, and yards all merge into undifferentiated grayish-white. The sky is overcast, the same color as the ground, so they merge together. Windblown snow fills the air, blurring any objects in the scene. Two trees and a telephone pole appear as muted silhouettes, while houses directly across the street are almost invisible, just barely detectable ghostly shapes.

You've probably heard of tornado damage being rated on an
“F" or "EF" scale. But how did that scale come to be? What
connection could a tornado damage rating scale have to the
Manhattan Project?
On August 9, 1945, young Japanese scientist Tetsuya “Ted”
Fujita was at home near the cloud-covered city of Kokura,
Japan when Bockscar, a B-29 Superfortress carrying the Fat
Man atomic bomb, aborted dropping the bomb on Kokura and
headed towards its secondary target, Nagasaki. At 11:02 AM
local time, Fat Man detonated over Nagasaki, killing and
wounding tens of thousands. Shortly after, Fujita joined a team
of researchers to analyze the effects of the blast at both
Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Studying the burn shadows on
bamboo flutes placed in local cemeteries, Fujita was able to
determine the trajectory of the blast and at what elevation the
bomb exploded.
With an interest in storms since childhood, Fujita took what he
learned at Hiroshima and Nagasaki and applied it to storm
damage assessments. His research on a particular severe
thunderstorm in Japan in 1947 caught the eye of faculty at the
University of Chicago, where he was invited to study in 1953.
He ultimately devised the Fujita scale in 1971 (now the EF, or
Enhanced Fujita scale), which measures tornado damage on a
scale of 0 to 5.

We have an unfinished basement that usually stays above 40℉, plus I monitor it, so I wasn't concerned. However, it looks like there are localized areas of the basement that get colder than the spot I'm monitoring, and last night it got down to -10℉ outside. Apparently that was enough. The problem was localized to one spot right at the pressure tank, and hitting it with a space heater for 10 minutes was enough to clear it. Nothing's damaged as far as I can see. Got lucky.

I guess I'll be doing some insulating. This is the longest, coldest cold snap I've experienced here and the bright side of it is that it's alerted me to a trouble spot as well as the limits of our current systems!

It’s definitely not casual‑walking weather. And here I am, talking about the weather again. I’d rather talk about anything except the news, which is distressing and depressing, though I suppose the weather technically counts as news.

These days I can get everything I need by glancing at the bottom corner of my computer screen or checking my phone. It makes me wonder how we kept up with the weather in the before‑time, before all the gadgets we take for granted now. I spent most of those years in the Army, so half the time I was already outside in it. Otherwise, you looked out the window. If you wanted more detail, you waited for the newspaper, the radio, or the evening TV report. The military had its own weather people, of course, but the simplest thing was to pick up the daily paper. For me, overseas, that meant the Stars and Stripes.

I grabbed a copy every morning, if for no other reason than to read the latest Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson. Those strips were often the most profound thing I’d see all day. As for the weather, I’d glance at it, but it didn’t matter much. The weather was going to do whatever it wanted, whether I knew about it or not, and I was going to be wherever the Army needed me, doing whatever needed doing. That’s the way it is in uniform—sometimes you’re just wet and cold.

"A tight cluster of oxeye daisies fills the frame like a small constellation brought down to earth. Each blossom is a bright, open face: a sun‑yellow center textured like fine velvet, surrounded by a perfect ring of slender white petals that radiate outward with quiet confidence. The petals overlap slightly from flower to flower, creating a sense of abundance—almost as if the daisies are leaning in toward one another.

The white petals catch the light in soft, uneven ways, revealing faint ridges and gentle curves, like tiny strokes of a paintbrush. The yellow centers glow warmly, their surfaces dotted with countless tiny florets that give them a subtle, grainy richness.

Behind the flowers, deep green leaves form a cool, shadowed backdrop. Their darker tones make the daisies appear even brighter, almost luminous. The overall impression is one of freshness and vitality—an uncomplicated beauty that feels both wild and tender, as if the flowers were gathered in a meadow at the height of spring." - Microsoft Copilot
