Looking like a good profile for some thunderstorms between Sacramento and Redding today.

This is a look at the skew-t generated by Windborne's WeatherMesh model, which takes in data from our global network of over 300 weather balloons in the air.

A skew-t profile for Chico, California showing skinny CAPE, an indicator of possible thunderstorm development.

day 7 on our ride to Copenhagen started with us smugly waiting for the ferry early, only to realize that there is no service till May 1st. so we ended up on a train hopping over the water and shaving 40kms off our ride which my legs needed after yesterday's battle with the wind. Wind was a manageable 20km/h today but often as a head wind. beautiful riding along the east coast of Sjealland Island protected from the norwester made for a very pleasant and unexpectedly quick day

Good morning tooters. Sleeping super soundly & longer after daylight savings end, it does help that it’s a little cooler as well. A nice 12c when I got up today & it’s beautiful & sunny outside heading to 25c.
I could go swimming today, but the exercise class I did yesterday involved a fair bit of shoulder work so I think I’m just going to take myself off for a walk.
Easter 🐣 weekend was good fun. Really enjoyed my family time with all the grandkids on Sunday, my youngest granddaughter gifted me a garden ornament, it’s very bright & a little different & it made me laugh. It is of course now in the garden in a pot that will produce orange flowers after winter. Yesterday I just had a quiet day just going to my sisters place to say goodbye to her visitors & came home with a cooked chook as they’d bought too many & a sweet potato that is sprouting, looks awesome - I’d mentioned I was looking for one & I hope I can keep it going until springtime to plant out the slips.
I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend & are feeling refreshed, take care out there 🌻.

Not only was this the hottest March on record, it would also qualify as the hottest ever April. 👀

I think I’ll let Charlie take me for a walk this morning so we can breathe some fresh air and get a little exercise. We’ll wait a couple of hours and let the outside warm up first. The temperature usually rises through the day until two or three o’clock, then it drifts back down again like a gentle wave. Usually is the key word — when the temperature starts falling in the middle of the day, something is happening in the atmosphere. Most likely a cold front rolling in from the north.

I used to understand these things a bit better, thanks to a few college classes, but that was a long, long time ago. Still, I remember enough to know that a cold front coming from the south would be a bad omen, especially since I live about eighty miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. That’s where the warm waters feeding the Gulf Stream begin their journey up the eastern coast of the United States and Canada. On the other side of the country, the California Current runs south from British Columbia, carrying much colder water. If you’ve ever dipped your hands in both oceans, you know the difference immediately — the Atlantic feels almost warm compared to the chill of the Pacific.

Those currents do a lot to shape our weather. I wish I could recall more of the details of the country’s physical geography, but the simple truth is this: disrupting those currents would be a very bad thing.

Hmm… another morning where my mind wanders wherever it pleases, even if it leads me into waters deeper than I can swim.

The birds form a loose cluster near the shoreline, their white bodies bright against the pale sand. Royal Terns dominate the group — tall, sleek birds with crisp white plumage, black caps that look like windswept crests, and long, vivid orange beaks that catch the sunlight.

Mixed among them are smaller Forster’s Terns, more delicate in build, their softer gray wings and shorter bills giving them a subtler presence beside their royal cousins. Some birds face the water, some face inland, and others seem to be calling out, their beaks slightly open as if in mid‑conversation. A few stand close together like companions; others keep a bit of distance, each bird claiming its own patch of sand.

Behind them, the ocean glimmers in shifting shades of blue and green, the surface broken by small, foamy waves that slide up the beach and retreat again. The light is bright and clean, giving the whole scene a feeling of openness — a warm, breezy morning on the Louisiana coast where the birds rest, preen, and watch the water.

If I recall correctly, it was usually sometime in early May.

The record for earliest 100F day is March 26, 1988.

It looks like that record is going to fall, probably on Wednesday.

And of course, I have appointments in the area Tuesday through Thursday 😿

I hadn't rebooted yet (Windows users are now very confused), but sometime Monday night the OOM-killer daemon decided to murder one of systemd's processes (good choice!) and took down the whole X session. So if I was going to have to log in again anyways, I figured I'd reboot to get the most recent kernel I'd installed.

A couple of weirdnesses have popped up since then. The upgrade appears to have uninstalled the package, which is particularly weird, because it doesn't conflict with anything, and I had manually installed it, so it shouldn't have been a candidate for auto-deletion. And it wasn't because an alternate cal program got installed - there was no cal binary at all. I reinstalled ncal with no issues. ???

The slightly-bigger one is that the window on my desktop ain't there no more. I think Cinnamon calls these ? It still shows as installed and configured in the settings app, but it doesn't show on the desktop. There's no mention of "weather" in the .xsession-errors log after logging in.
