‘On a whole other level’: rapid snow melt-off in American west stuns scientists
Snow surveys taking place across the West this week are offering a grim prognosis, after a historically warm winter and searing March heat left the critical snowpack at record-low levels.

Ya'all. This is not normal. This is climate change. A warming climate and the changes going on in the atmosphere it is causing is what allows these out of season, out of character, cold snaps. Frigid temps that are supposed to be contained to the Arctic, instead spread out. Meaning in the South US, we have snow, in the middle of March, a few days away from the official start of Spring. I used to live in Michigan (almost Canada), and getting fresh snow in March was rare.
At least I like playing in the snow, but this is not the correct time. Bittersweet fun. This photo I created *today*.

I took this photo on a snow shoe tour a while ago. That day, I didn't even want to go that far, but it went all well and the views were just beautiful and the whole surrounding was just pure silence.
on: https://www.franzgraf.de/blog/2023/creating-minimalism/ you can also see how the photo came to be.
I put it online for sale as well: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/silence-franz-graf.html
The morning after yesterday's blizzard.
Looking through my photos of last year, snow came down about the same time, but not near as much, and with much less damaging winds.
I saw them removing this pile of snow later in the day.
I like patterns of the cloud formations.

In the West, snow drought is pushing cross-country ski areas closer to a breaking point
Dirt is a common and unwanted sight at ski areas across the region this year. Due to high temperatures and low precipitation, snow coverage across the Western U.S. likely peaked in February at around 38% of average, according to a recent analysis by the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado Boulder. The percentage marks a record low since satellites started measuring snow coverage 26 years ago.
Ella investigating the 5-6 inches of heavy wet snow that fell overnight. This much of the heavy wet stuff and temps of 19 degrees is usual for March. What’s crazy is that by Wednesday it’ll be 78 degrees and by next weekend we’ll be in the low 80’s, well above normal.

Too much snow or hoping for more? Two different winters hit the US
So far this season, millions in the Northeast have endured rounds of frigid temperatures and mounds of snow. But a different winter has played out across much of the West. High temperatures and a lack of snow have been feeding a drought there, impacting ski resorts and fueling water shortage concerns.

How long we will have snow or polar bears is another matter.
"Snow and Frost at Eragny," Camille Pissarro, 1895.
Pissarro (1830-1903) was born in the Virgin Islands (then a Danish possession), from a French mother and a Portuguese father, both of whom were Jewish, which makes for a rather interesting background.
He's regarded as one of the most important Impressionists, not as much for his artistic style, great as it was, but because he was a central, organizing force in the group, and a calming, paternal presence to many younger artists. Cezanne, Van Gogh, and others, regarded him as a father figure, and he was said to be a warm, kindhearted individual.
He was in his 60s, having some health issues and financial hardships when he painted this, but the serenity here is remarkable. Pissarro was praised for his ability to paint people in natural settings without "artifice or grandeur" and that shows. Also a hint of his anarchist politics; he was a big fan of the common working person, and always depicted them with dignity.
From a private collection.

Just now returned from a fantastic winter adventure in the White Mountains, NH. Perfect weather and trail conditions allowed me to hike a substantial loop up high -- first ascending to a summit, then hiking a section of the ridge (hiking up and over other peaks), and ending by descending from the last peak.
