    Title: Honmon-ji Temple, Ikegami (1931)

    Artist: Hasui Kawase

    foundjapan.jp/en/2202_ikegamoh

A snowy evening at Tokyo's Honmon-ji Temple. Pedestrians carrying bamboo umbrellas over their heads walk up a track cleared in the snow by earlier foot traffic. On the left, a tall Japanese pine tree, its branches heavy with snow, stands near a wall running parallel to the path; up ahead, a temple gate opens on a series of wide stone steps, leading up toward the temple grounds. Beyond, tall trees are reduced to silhouettes in the winter gloom. Snow continues to fall across the scene.

I got some trash talk on the ‘toot’ about a Canadian plowing snow with an [electric] bicycle. The usual… “Can’t be done here” [US] or “Our snow is bigger” [than Can BC ??]
I’m well used to be called an idiot by idiots, mostly of US origin.
But it made me think of a video by the amazing Dutch-Canadian from ‘Not Just Bikes’.
Even though it’s topic is about a comparison between Canada and Finland, for those US trash talkers: the US has nothing on BOTH countries.

When talking about bicycle infrastructure in Canada, the number one excuse I hear is "winter." Many Canadians see the cold and snow as a fundamental barrier to year round cycling. But one city, Oulu in Finland, with winter weather worse than most Canadian cities, shows that winter cycling has nothing to do with the weather, and everything to do with safe cycling infrastructure.

Want to learn more about winter cycling? Every February, the Winter Cycling Federation holds a Winter Cycling Congress where experts and advocates get together and talk about best practices in cycling infrastructure and maintenance. More information is here at → wintercycling.org/“ ←

It is currently impossible to bike on Forbidden Drive or the Lincoln Drive trail without a bike specifically designed for this purpose. I saw one guy with enormous tires making some headway, but everyone else with a normal bike gave up and turned around. I walked most of the way with walk assist.

The was just too deep and squishy, it was like on a sand dune. The paved should be plowed at least, one guy said they used to plow one lane of Forbidden Drive in the 90s and 00s.

Follow the tracks..... and there is Mopsy, excited by the new snow. She's been dancing about among the shrubs.

A few minutes was enough, she came back up the steps to the byre without my usual effort at herding her back in.

Fresh snow about 2 or 3 inches deep on a small lawn with a planted border with shrubs. There is a line of rabbit tracks across the snow, disappearing into the border.

During 'Risshun' (立春) the 'east wind melts the ice' (東風解凍 Feb 4th-8th), 'bush warblers begin singing in the mountains' (黄鶯睍睆 9-13th), and mysteriously 'fish emerge from the ice' (魚上氷 14-18th).

Toji-in's 'Seiren-tei' teahouse in the snow.

Closeup of a very shallow gray puddle on a city street. Little concrete bumps stick out of the water’s surface like islands, and a patch of dirty snow and ice slopes upward from left to right in the foreground at bottom frame. Reflected in the water is a pale winter sun, in a small opening of blue sky surrounded by gray clouds. Although it’s clear what the image is, it also makes me think of a snow-capped mountain lit by a waning sun, shining through the clouds of a gathering storm.

As this is in a tree in the backyard that won't see sun until March, it still looks pretty much like this now.

Bare tree limbs are the backdrop the birdhouse. Most of those have already lost their snow cover due to the winds.

This is a long-view of the top of the mountain to our east, and because of the snow and the sun, you can actually make out the top of the ridge, and all the trees along it, above the roof of my neighbor's home.

The mountain is about 3000'. It's a bit further away than this looks.

The deck snow itself, visible just a little with the blue light, has been tromped upon by the snow removal person trying to get the snow off the pergola. That was, of course, me.

The low light and the iPhone picture make the light coming out from the lamp look rather fuzzy, honestly.

Currently 22F but the macadam is clear and dry after the 2nd shoveling this morning. Low of 5F tonight, and more winds.

We have not yet cleared the paver entry walk for the 2nd time. It is really nice to see the blue skies again.

The sun is a murky light blob behind the trees to the left in this photo. First time in a couple of days to see it!

I think I po'ed a dad with his daughter and a sled, but I'm here for the dog walkers and wanted to be sure they had an ice-free path up this hill, at least on our property.

I think we have over 300' of sidewalk, but it was the easiest shoveling I've ever done.

A sidewalk curves up next to a street which rises away from the camera, still snow-covered as are the homes on both sides. The property falls off over 50' from the front to the back, so I like to keep this open and clear for people walking up the hill. As of right now, the sidewalk is completely clear and dry, thank you, sun!

The rectangular-shaped boulders retaining this part of the side yard appear like iced cakes. The greenery of some very confused daffodils are barely poking above the snow.

I should have gone out to remove the last 2" of snow, but what the heck... I'll wait until the temps double tomorrow. 😱 23F for the high.

And we don't need to. Heat is on, lights are on, there's running water. Tomorrow's Sunday.

Taken from my front porch, one can see the snow has covered part of the porch again, along with the stairs and a pathway along the right side of the pavers that I had shoveled and then swept. The other side, and the driveway was only shoveled.

The scene is still tranquil, with very light snow falling, two houses visible across the court, and a variety of trees partially covered in powder. We have not seen blue skies or the sun today at all. I believe all of that will change tonight... ok, we won't see blue skies or sun tonight either, but you know what I mean.

This is one of the streets that the non-AWD cars attempted and then from which they retreated.

Hanging on the wall of the house is a light blue and white quilt square in the pattern of a snowflake, which is our talisman every time snow is forecast. Generally it is ineffective, but this time it worked. Yay.

Forecast shows another 6+ hours at or above 50% chance of snow or sleet. Temps will barely break freezing tomorrow with hard freezes at 8 and 10F overnight the next 2 nights. Hoping nobody needs to go anywhere the next 48-72h or so. It’s likely going to be several inches of hard packed ice at least through Monday at this rate. Only 2h at most to thaw on Sunday and just 6h above freezing Monday.

I couldn't watch, they were both sliding back down the hill, just one misstep and disaster. Someone with a Jeep came and towed them.

It was a very memorable experience for him just as this snow/sleet experience may be for some people. Maybe not in a good way, though. Idk.

This 1st photo in the post was taken about 6 hours after that post this replies to. This time, instead of the person salting the white frozen ground in the middle of the drive up to the left roll up door, there is are now 2 people. The first person is wearing a beanie, and probably the same one from the previous post, using the snow shovel in their hand to clear heavy wet stuff. A jagged path a few feet wide has been cleared of snow and frozen water, with brown concrete visible back to the yellow door, left of the roll up door. A silver SUV with the hatch open is backed up in front of snowy steps leading to the glass doors on the far left edge of the photo. A vast snowy lot surrounds the person with the shovel. Just behind the beanie clad, shovel bearing person, stands another person: sans beanie but possibly wearing some sort of cap, no discernable facial hair, grey pants, black jacket and boots, and seeming very content to watch this activity without active participation.

This 2nd photo in the post was taken about 690 after the 1st in this post. This time, instead of peope in the middle of the drive up to the left roll up door, there is now ansmptu, jagged path cleared of snow many feet wide near the building, with brown concrete visible back to the yellow door as well as roll up door, extending down towards the center bottom of the view. The further from the building that the clearing gets, the narrower it gets, until it just sort of ends, like a sigh at the end of a long meeting. The hatch of the silver SUV is closed. Most of the view is a vast, snowy lot, despite valiant efforts at snow removal by hand.

There is one guy who has a house flipping business that might be responsible. I thought I would see his "4-wheeler" buzzing around. But nope.

I knew at least one was around because I saw some tracks, but not in the back yard where they usually hang out. Guessing they're having trouble getting around in the foot of snow (~30cm) on the ground.
