Doesn't look like any new snow is falling, but the winds are blowing something fierce so we're in the "blowing and drifting" phase.

Grateful to be able to stay inside today. No need to shovel or snowblow yet. Neighbor with end loader will clear the yard eventually. No deliveries due until mid week anyway.

Brooklyn, February 2026. In the middle of a blizzard. Silence as I walked down the block. The road hidden under a thick blanket of white, interrupted by a dark stripe of tire tracks receding into hazy distance. A line of parked cars, thickly encrusted with snow like sloping white hills. Trees with dark slender limbs outlined in white. Blank wall of sky. A streetlight far off, glowing dimly. Winter in full force, transforming a bustling city into the silent middle of nowhere.

The red brick facade of a low-rise apartment building in the middle of a blizzard. Snow clings to the walls and thickly covers all upper surfaces — windowsills, door lintels, the ladders and railings of fire escapes. At street level is a blue door with a round glass portal. Beside it is a tall narrow window with a design of metal bars radiating out from its lower left corner. Partly obscuring the door and window is a mound of snow in the foreground, hiding a buried car. If you look closely you can see windblown snowflakes streaking all across the image.

Whew, we finally dug ourselves out from yesterday's blizzard(-ish?). It took about two hours. It's hard to say how much snow came down but it blew around and drifted quite high in places. I had to do a bit of snow management and we have some piles as tall as I am.

We lost power for about two hours. I worry we'll be experiencing more of those into March as the weather warms up and the wind blows harder.

So here in southern , we were predicted to get the " " blizzard earlier today - the one that hammered (Hi, @Satori !). It didn't arrive when predicted. Instead we got freezing rain for most of the day, and then the storm rolled in after dinner tonight.

Because my neighbourhood is on the edge of town, in the direction of the prevailing winds, and because my street faces that direction, and I'm at the end of the cul-de-sac, the wind brings snow for miles, drives it down my street, and dumps it in my driveway. If a storm dumps 5cm of fresh snow, it is not uncommon for my driveway to be hip-deep in snow. [1]

Well, this storm is supposed to dump 10 to 20 cm by morning, with "potential higher local amounts".

So tomorrow I expect I will be spending several hours outside with the snowblower, trying to manhandle it around on a slope with a solid coating of ice under the snow. Sheesh.

[1] The day we moved into this place, as we're carrying boxes in, a neighbour came over to introduce themselves, but the first thing they said wasn't "Hello" or even their name. It was "You have a snowblower, right?" I thought it was funny, until the next two neighbours did exactly the same thing.
