People sit on the beach of Moutchic as smoke rises into the sky from a wildfire. Authorities in south-western France have ordered the total evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula on the Atlantic coast by land and sea as an ‘intense and highly unpredictable’ wildfire advances on one of the country’s best-known holiday spots.

Meanwhile the area by where we are is also burning. 200-300 hectares of the Dublin-Wicklow uplands scorched. Apparently under control now.
(You can smell the smoke in the air in Bray; found ash on my clothes after my morning walk.)
Increasingly hot Europe faces more Severe Droughts and Growing Challenges for Water and Land Management
The European summer of 2026 has so far been characterised by exceptional #heat and widespread #dryness (#Copernicus, 2026). Between April and June, large parts of the continent, from #Portugal in the southwest to southern #Finland in the northeast, received below-average rainfall. Combined with successive #heatwaves, these conditions have intensified drought across #Europe, contributing to widespread #agricultural and #hydrological impacts, unusually low river levels (#NOS, 2026), and severe #wildfires, particularly in #Spain and #France, where 116,000 and 42,000 hectares have already been burnt, respectively (#EFFIS, 2026). Although western Europe experienced a relatively wet start to the year, persistent precipitation deficits in eastern Europe carried over from 2025, resulting in different types and stages of drought developing across the continent. With forecasts indicating little relief in the near term, the summer of 2026 is emerging as one of Europe’s most significant heat and #drought events in recent years.
“The European drought is a compound crisis, driven by prolonged precipitation deficits and extreme heat, with impacts already evident despite the summer only just beginning.
Wildfire activity has also intensified rapidly in western Europe. The drought is placing severe strain on agriculture”

In this photograph, PM Mark Carney is touring the Government Operations Centre - the nerve centre that leads the “integrated federal response to all-hazard events of a national interest.”
The workforce there has been cut in half thanks to Carney’s public service cuts, from 100 to just 50 workers.
In other words, to advance major projects “in the national interest” (like pipelines and military hardware), the PM has slashed the number of public sector workers who coordinate the response to emergencies “of a national interest”.
As Sharon de Sousa of PSAC says,
“Gutting it by almost half puts people across the country at risk, including frontline workers who are battling wildfires, supporting evacuations and risking their lives.”

Besides the Canadian Red Cross, what are some charities we could donate proceeds to? Particularly to help affected Indigenous communities?
Please boost for visibility!! Thank you! 😊

We had 6 years to adopt clean air standards
We had 6 years to normalize masking
Society chose denial instead
Now as wildfires rage & the air turns to poison … people are left unprotected
Covid cautious folks are still trying to protect those who’ve ignored them for years
We are still trying to arm people with the tools they need to keep themselves and their families healthy.
We’re handing out N95s.
We’re supporting mask blocs.
We’re teaching people how to build corsi Rosenthal boxes.
We’re educating about the health risks of wildfire
We’re still fighting to help anyone who will listen.
We’ve been left by the wayside, but we haven’t given up.
Everyone is at risk from wildfire smoke.
Everyone.
You can’t choose to not breathe.
We share the air and we need to start caring about the quality of that air.
Invest in good quality respirators.
Get air purifiers for your home.
Support clean air groups in your neighborhood.
Hand out masks to the unhoused and those who can’t escape the elements.
No one is coming to save us.
We must show up and save each other.

When the boreal forests of Canada catch on fire, no one can do anything about it in many cases.
Many people simply don’t grasp the sheer magnitude of the boreal forest or what it would take to manage fires across its enormous area, Jed Kaplan, a professor in the Department of Earth, Energy, and Environment at the University of Calgary, told me: “You can’t control these fires. You cannot put personnel, fire engines, over an area that is the size of the entire American South, or something like that. It’s just way too big of an area.”
And so the fires spread, pouring out smoke that washes over the residents of faraway cities.
This is really bare bones because I haven't done the usual outreach I do to get it updated, but I have a Wildfire Smoke Resources doc for the US (I would like to expand it to Canada but I'd need help!) where you can get information about where to find free masks, air filters and air purifiers, and safe places to go to get out of smoky air, as well as general resources about wildfire smoke and how to protect yourself: https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/view/4Mi5umUBZUCSIt7qA6kMSiZK5ZoTntWUlSXkJ9y1ZhU/
If you have a mask block or other resource for free masks or clean air in your area, let me know! You can message me here or use the form that's linked in the doc.

Smoke from the wildfires in north western Ontario will blanket the southern part of the province as well as the east coast of the US, consequences of yet another heatwave.
Video is of a Canadian train crew surrounded by raging wildfire flames yesterday near Armstrong, Ontario.
To my friends out in the smoke: i wanted to point out that the way the Canadian system works it's just going to say "10+" on most apps, but the smoke hazard may be way above that. Here is a comparison of the same day and time as shown on the Purpleair app, showing the warning messages from the Canadian and U.S. system side by side. Last year someone I knew got pneumonia because nobody was protecting themselves from the smoke. After all, it only says high risk people need to worry

Good news, long overdue:
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/firefighters-wear-n95-respirators-policy-change-rcna351438
The Forest Service announced Wednesday that firefighters were authorized to use N95 respirators on the fire line, a major policy reversal as the agency for decades did not allow such protections, even as studies demonstrated the health harms of wildfire smoke.
The Forest Service also announced that it is initiating a decontamination program designed to reduce firefighters’ skin exposure to the toxins in soot and ash. Workers will be paid for the time they spend washing clothes, cleaning their vehicles and showering after working on a fire.
The agency described the new policies as an interim step as it pursues a more robust protection program.
The announcement came as Congress increases its scrutiny of the agency’s protections for firefighters.

SHORE FIRE – HIGHWAY UPDATE
MORENO VALLEY, CA - The Shore Fire is currently 2,600 acres and 25% contained.
TRAFFIC ADVISORY
State Route 60 westbound has reopened at the Interstate 10 interchange. Motorists should expect delays and remain alert for firefighters, law enforcement personnel, and heavy equipment operating in the area. State Route 60 remains open.
Drivers are urged to reduce their speed, use caution, and consider alternate routes when possible, to help maintain safe access for emergency personnel. Traffic conditions and roadway access remain subject to change based on fire activity and operational needs.
SMOKE AND FIRE ACTIVITY UPDATE
Residents and motorists may continue to see smoke and occasional flare-ups within the area. This activity is the result of interior hotspots and pockets of unburned vegetation continuing to smolder within the established fire perimeter.
Firefighters are actively monitoring and addressing these areas. While visible smoke may be visible from surrounding communities, it remains within the fire footprint and does not indicate significant fire growth.
Residents in and around the area are advised to use caution, as emergency personnel and equipment remain in the area conducting suppression and containment operations.
Evacuation ORDERS and WARNINGS remain in effect.
Map and Information: https://Protect.Genasys.com
We appreciate the patience and cooperation of residents and the community as crews continue
suppression and containment efforts. For additional information and updates on the Shore Fire,

LA Times: New evidence confirms Edison’s idle line ignited Eaton fire, lawyers say
"... New surveillance video and utility data bolster claims that a century-old, idle Edison transmission line ignited last year’s Eaton fire, which killed 19 people and displaced thousands in Altadena, lawyers say.
Lawyers for insurers are seeking a ruling holding Edison financially liable for the fire. They point to how two flashes on a video from a Pasadena swim club correspond to the timing of two faults, three seconds apart, that Edison recorded on its transmission lines just before the fire ignited.
Edison has not accepted responsibility for igniting the fire, saying its own investigation and a separate inquiry by state and county officials is continuing.

The hills are on fire
Go to the mall
Sure your home is burning
Fashions on sale for fall
Quickly now hurry
you must evacuate
Things are on sale at the mall
Don't be late
While you watch
the neighborhood burning
Snag some fast fashion
You've been yearning
Be sure to
Grab a hot dog on a stick
Apologies if
The smoke is too thick
Anyway now
Enjoy your time at the mall
Since the hills will be burning
Until well past fall

VCFD: "Today, VCFD and our partners are actively reducing wildfire risk across the county through a variety of fuels management projects designed to protect communities in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI).
In Thousand Oaks, specifically the Rancho area by the 101 and 23 freeways, crews and a tracked masticator is reducing hazardous vegetation and creating strategic fuel breaks to help slow the spread of future wildfires.
Near Long Canyon in Simi Valley, targeted goat grazing is being used to naturally reduce invasive grasses and other flashy fuels while minimizing environmental impacts.
In Upper Ojai, partners are conducting a 65-acre prescribed burn to safely remove excess vegetation under carefully planned conditions, reducing fuel loads.
No single tool solves the wildfire challenge. Mechanical treatment, prescribed grazing, and prescribed fire each play an important role in creating healthier, more fire-resilient landscapes.
These proactive projects represent a balanced approach between wildfire safety, environmental stewardship, and community protection. By reducing hazardous fuels before a fire starts, we can improve firefighter safety, strengthen defensible space, protect critical infrastructure, and reduce the intensity and spread of future wildfires.
The Ventura County Fire Department continues to seek collaborative fuels management and wildfire resilience projects throughout the county to help create safer, more fire-adapted communities."
Together, we're building a more resilient Ventura County.
