This Long Covid Awareness Day let us remember the millions who've been disabled by the virus.
The people who've been forgotten and left behind.
The folks who have to hide their diagnosis because of the stigma attached to it.

ICE deported a severely disabled 6 year old to Columbia after removing him from his special needs school.
Before being deported he was dragged from one detention centre to another and denied his medical devices.
He had no way to communicate or understand what was happening.
Hanne Dugeman is a Type 1 diabetic who was denied proper medical care in ICE custody.
She lost 10lbs in 9 days.
She experienced severe infections and had to be placed in medical isolation.
She was denied her continuous glucose monitor.
She was given too much insulin & another detainee gave her crackers and saved her life.
She did nothing wrong.
She was married to a US citizen and grabbed at a regular check in
ICE nearly killed her.
It’s eugenics
No one is safe in their custody, least of all disabled people.

20 members of Congress are finally speaking out for Rodney Taylor, a disabled double amputee who’s now spent more than a year in an ICE camp.

He’s been denied his prosthetics, placed in solitary & his health is declining.
Please make noise for Rodney. He’s suffered for so long.

Remote work and things like telehealth, other live video streaming of events that some chronically ill and/or disabled would otherwise be unable to attend, were some of the positives that occurred during the pandemic.
Tellingly, disabled people had been calling for them for years only to be told no or it's too difficult, but once "normal" people needed them, suddenly they were available overnight.
So now "normal" people don't need these again, and disabled people are thrown under the bus. That period of participation in society and acceptance in that society we gained so briefly is to be cruelly snatched away, again.
...and so it goes.
1. Conventional Programming Languages: Fat and FlabbyIn the abstract, he states:
Conventional programming languages are growing ever more enormous, but not stronger. Inherent defects at the most basic level cause them to be both fat and weak: their primitive word-at-a-time style of programming inherited from their common ancestor--the von Neumann computer, their close coupling of semantics to state transitionsand later
For twenty years programming languages have been steadily progressing toward their present condition of obesitydoubling down on the body shaming and ableism. He clarifies later in the lecture that what he means by "von Neumann programming language" is one with assignment statements and manipulation of variables. Applicative (i.e. functional) languages are what he means to contrast with these stateful languages.
Several figures of that time, including Peter Landin of "the next 700 programming languages" fame, were unashamedly in love with the lambda calculus and the prospect that it could usher in a full algebraization of computer programming. Backus is interesting because here in a high-profile lecture he's explicitly referring to issues of state as making programming languages "fat" and "flabby". I suspect many of his peers felt similarly even if they weren't using such nakedly ableist metaphors.

Canadian here so bear with me because I don’t fully understand US gun laws (nor do I understand their attachment TO guns).
What I do know is whenever there’s a mass shooting someone will bring up stricter gun control and the Right wing gun lovers shout “my freedom! You can’t take away my right to protect myself!”
Yet we are seeing a U.S. State attempt to criminalize the wearing of medical masks in all public spaces. Something that is quite literally “personal protective tool”. Why doesn’t our freedom to protect ourselves from infection as much as their freedom to carry a gun?
I can’t see any scenario where someone else would be harmed by an N95 - the same is NOT true for any gun. Yet one is being criminalized and the other isn’t.
I sincerely hope we start hearing more people speak out against criminalizing medical masks if for no other reason than the violation of freedom and bodily autonomy. You don’t have to care about Covid to understand that some people need to wear masks.
It is a very sad example of the state of the world when a person can walk into a pharmacy or grocery store with a gun - but not wearing a medical respirator DURING A PANDEMIC

2025 was the deadliest year on record for ICE.
People are dying in the camps.
They’re dying in the streets.
US citizens have been shot and killed.
These are just the deaths we know about.
Then there’s the deaths you won’t hear as much about.
The disabled. The vulnerable. The homeless or anyone labelled “expendable”.
Never forget that fascism and eugenics go hand in hand.
My latest is about Wael Tarabishi, a 30 year old disabled US citizen who relied on his father for full time care.
ICE grabbed Maher when he showed up for his yearly immigration check in.
Wael pleaded for his release. He told ICE he would die without his caregiver.
They didn’t care. Wael died three months later.
His dad never got to say goodbye.
His story deserves to be told.
ICE ensured his last months were filled with unnecessary pain and suffering.

The measles outbreak in South Carolina is the largest in the country and has spread to three other states.
It’s growing at an alarming speed.
Over 500 people in quarantine and 200 are actively infected.
This was completely preventable.
These people didn’t need to get sick.
Measles can kill. It can disable. It can leave you deaf and blind.
It’s a vaccine preventable illness.
Shame on everyone creating distrust in the vaccine and refusing to do their part for public health.
I’ve been thinking these days about ableist language, and have been trying to excise it from my writing.
I’d long ago eliminated words like “crazy” and “insane”, and words that describe someone's physical appearance in a pejorative way. More recently, I’ve been addressing words like “stupid” and “moron” (HT @meganL).
What I’ve learned is that changing isn’t really that hard to do once I’m aware of which words are hurtful to other groups of people. And over time I’ve built up a simple list, roughly grouped, to remind me of better alternatives. What other words do folks here favour?
• ill-judged, ill-conceived, ill-considered, shambolic, chaotic, haphazard, careless, feckless
• shallow, unserious, frivolous, simplistic, uninformed, callow
• dishonest , disingenuous, deceitful, duplicitous
• hateful, mean-spirited, selfish, thoughtless, petty
• parasitic, anti-social, selfish
• malicious, vicious, cruel, vindictive, dangerous
• toxic, venomous, poisonous
I lost a friend over my article about the murder of Renee Nicole Good.
He was angry I called out the underlying misogyny.
He was mad I didn’t give ICE the benefit of the doubt.
He made it personal.
He told me my “stupid clown hair” is why people don’t take me seriously
Everything he said to me was dripping with disdain and misogyny.
There was no debate.
There was no respectful disagreement.
In under five minutes he had attacked my intelligence, my politics, my appearance and my writing.
This is not normal behaviour.
He literally proved my point.
Had I taken the bait I’m convinced that I would have been called a “f*cking b*tch” by the end of the conversation.
This is what MAGA is doing to men.
It’s emboldening them.
It’s validating their bigotry.
I assume this person was always hateful and misogynistic on some level … but now he no longer feels he has to hide it.
He literally said as much.
He said “I never told you in the past because I wasn’t allowed. Now I am.”
Why is he allowed to tell me now??
Why does he feel justified in lashing out with rage and insults over something that has nothing to do with him?
It’s because of what happened to Renee Nicole Good.
We all watched a woman get shot in broad daylight and there’s been zero consequences
We’ve watched rapists, pedophiles and abusers go free for years.
Every woman who’s ever experienced abuse knew exactly what Jonathan Ross meant when he said “f*cking b*tch”
He didn’t fear for his life.
He was enraged she didn’t fear for hers.
My friend was enraged I dare speak out for a “lesbian leftist”.
He was enraged I didn’t remain silent, complicit and demure.
He was apparently also enraged I didn’t realize he hated my hair and change it to please him.
Make no mistake, there is a war against women going on.
This regime wants to make us “less than”.
They want us afraid.
They want us in the home serving our husbands and having children.
They want us seen and not heard.
They don’t want us resisting.
Which is why we must keep speaking out.
We must refuse to go back.
My life is better off without this person in it, and thankfully I can walk away.
Not everyone can.
Speak up if you see someone being hurt.
Protect your friends and neighbours.
Challenge misogynistic talking points.
Demand justice for Renee Nicole Good.

Yes, Walmart execs rake in huge profits by paying their employees a fraction of the value of their labor. So, little, in fact, that they must rely on govt assistance just to survive. Consequently, it is all of us, through our tax dollars, that subsidize and enrich this slimy welfare scammer. But the $6.2B in public assistance quoted in this meme was based on 2014, and the amount they collect today is most likely much higher. https://www.forbes.com/sites/clareoconnor/2014/04/15/report-walmart-workers-cost-taxpayers-6-2-billion-in-public-assistance/
Walmart is the single largest employer in the U.S. (1.6 million employees). The Walton family has a collective estimated net worth of $225 billion. They’re so rich they own two separate NFL teams: the Rams and the Broncos. However, 48% of the children living in Bentonville, Arkansas, where Walmart is headquartered, are living in poverty—higher than any other county in the state. And the city is ranked 15th out of 916 metro areas in terms of income inequality. A 2017 survey of >1,000 Walmart employees found that the company was probably violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act. The New York Times said that the company “routinely refuses to accept doctors’ notes, penalizes workers who need to take care of a sick family member and otherwise punishes employees for lawful absences.” A 2013 report found that the U.S. taxpayers were paying $5,000/year per Walmart employee in govt. assistance.

Today in Labor History January 1, 1934: A "Law for the Prevention of Genetically Diseased Offspring" went into effect in Nazi Germany. The Eugenics research that Hitler used to justify torture and genocide was inspired by similar research from the U.S. The American eugenics movement originated in the 1880s, from the biological determinist ideas of Francis Galton. He believed that selective breeding could improve the human race and allow them to direct their own evolution. The U.S. eugenics movement was heavily funded by the Carnegie Institution, Rockefeller Foundation and the Harriman railroad fortune. Biologist Charles B. Davenport founded the Eugenics Record Office (ERO) in 1911. The ERO trained field workers, who they sent to study people in mental hospitals and orphanages across the U.S. Davenport and others began to lobby for solutions to the problem of the "unfit." They lobbied for immigration restrictions and sterilization. Some even promoted the idea of extermination, well before Hitler became known for it. Some well-known eugenicists of the early 20th century included Alexander Graham Bell, Luther Burbank and Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger. The eugenics movement tended to target the poor, people with disabilities and mental illness, and communities of color as “unfit” for society. Their solutions included forced sterilization, which continued in the U.S. until as recently as 2010. From 1997-2010, California performed nonconsensual sterilizations on roughly 1,400 women prisoners. From 1929-1973, North Carolina sterilized the third highest number of people in the United States, roughly 7,600 people, predominantly African American women.

Social media generally slows down at the holidays. Why? Because people are celebrating and spending time with their families.
I’m not one of those people.
Why? Because I’m having another Chronic Illness Christmas.
When you’re disabled and chronically ill, the holidays hit different.
They’re lonely. Isolating. Exhausting.
As a result many of us are excluded and left on our own.
When I created The Disabled Ginger I wanted to build a community where everyone felt included.
I wanted to reach across the internet and connect people so they could always have someone to talk to. Someone who understood them. Someone who could make them feel a little less alone.
This Christmas that’s my wish for all of you… that you feel a little less alone.
That you find comfort and joy in the small things, whatever they may be.
If you’re healthy, please remember that not everyone is. That many people are suffering this Christmas and could use a kind word or a bit of love.
Merry Christmas Everyone.
Thank you for spending another year with me.

This cognitive dissonance - that insanity is a legal defense in court, but also an instant label abled people put on people they think act evilly - is one of the factors that allows fascism to grow undeterred for so long.
Because you convince yourself "sane" people could never do such things. When, actually, it is overwhelmingly "sane" people doing such things. You can't stand examining that, so you re-set the rhetorical frame to protect your comfort. #Ableism
Several times a day, if not several times an hour, I see people using "sane" as some sort of synonym for ethical and "insane" as some sort of synonym for unethical.
Think of what you're saying here - instead of grappling with the idea that abled people can do harmful and/or evil things, the moment some threshhold of evil is passed, you simply label them "insane".
This equates disability with evil, and equates being abled with virtue. It's a rhetorical frame to keep you comfortable. #Ableism

Able-bodied Canadians (especially Albertans), please take notice: the government of Alberta is stealing money from disabled people and making it even harder to exist while disabled.
Please take action, however you personally see fit to do so.
From Inclusion Alberta:
"The Government of Alberta’s decision to claw back the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) – a federal benefit intended to help lift Canadians with disabilities out of poverty – from AISH recipients is punitive, mean-spirited and undermines the benefit’s fundamental purpose. Now, to add insult to injury, they have informed AISH recipients they must apply for the benefit, which requires going through a time-consuming and complex eligibility process that requires applying for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) which often can cost as much as $300, so that, should they be eligible, the government can reduce their AISH by the corresponding amount. This is an unconscionable decision to take money meant to improve the lives of people with disabilities and redirect it to government coffers."
“At the same time as this government is cutting income taxes, it is effectively adding close to 10% tax on disability by clawing back up to $200/month of what would be the combined amount of AISH and CDB,” says Inclusion Alberta CEO Trish Bowman. “What moral justification could there possibly be for leaving Albertans with disabilities to live off less than MLAs receive for their taxpayer-funded housing allowance? To suggest the amount of AISH alone is adequate shows just how out of touch this government has become with the realities of people with disabilities and their families.”
You can read this media release further, at the below link:
#CanPol #ABpol #disability #Alberta #Edmonton #Calgary #RedDeer #ableism #austerity
Edit: To apply for the CDB on the online portal: all you need is your SIN (social insurance number), your 2024 tax assessment (one line of information), and your bank information (they probably already have it from your tax return auto-deposit information).
In the early hours of the morning, Bill 12 passed, which is going to upend the already-precarious financial reality that tens of thousands of disabled Albertans live in.
To quote Inclusion Alberta:
Inclusion Alberta is deeply dismayed by the passage of Bill 12, legislation that will do what no one in the disability community asked for: dramatically change the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program and introduce the Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP). At a time when living costs continue to rise steeply, Bill 12 threatens 79,000 Albertans currently on AISH and their families with a 10% cut to benefits and a 67% cut to fully exempt employment income. Striking out cost-of-living increases from legislation and restricting which decisions can be appealed makes Albertans with disabilities and their families even more vulnerable.
In passing this legislation, the Government of Alberta has ignored the frightened and anxious pleas of thousands of Albertans with disabilities and their families. They, along with former leaders and advisors in government’s own disability programs, organizations that represent and support people with disabilities, lawyers, economists, and the Alberta Medical Association, called for pausing the plan for ADAP and engaging in genuine consultation with the disability community on what changes could enhance disability assistance in our province.

We can’t allow this to happen. The disability community has fought far too hard for far too long to remove that word from the public vernacular.
This is ableism at it’s most ugly, and ableism feeds eugenics and eugenics feeds fascism.
Help us fight back. We are not expendable.

@pesh Yup.
I'm not saying that one shouldn't defend funding for programs like that just because of the name. But the framing is built in and to a large extent it was the separate but unequal system that framing is part of that makes it so easy to target right now.
It's "them", it's "extra" expense, etc. #Ableism
I'd consider it a bit of a plus if folks would stop using "special needs" to describe needs that people have. Talk about access needs (which everyone has and they all differ from each other) and talk about accessibility, but please don't play along with systemic ableism's constant rhetoric of setting disabled people apart as lesser or "more expensive" than people who are not yet disabled. #Ableism #Disability #Accessibility #a11y
@sundogplanets Not to mention ableist AF not to. Botanical Society of America has even made their disability group at conferences only an in-person thing, FFS.

@lea yes and I see this '#PassiveDiscrimination' by #AbleistDesign & #HostileDesign being leveraged like that!
As goes with #homeless, so it goes with EVERYONE deemed "#undesired"!

Another immigrant has gone missing from ICE custody after suffering a medical emergency and losing consciousness.
ICE enforcement is a mass disabling event
If you have a medical emergency in ICE custody, there’s a chance you will simply “disappear”
Or you could end up like Randall Alberto Gamboa Esquivel who was deported to Costa Rica in a persistent vegetative state.
He died soon after
“Have you tried just doing X? Surely if you were that sick you would have help. Maybe you just haven’t tried hard enough.”
How often have disabled & chronically ill people heard statements like that? I wrote about the gaslighting many disabled people experience - and how you can cope with it, set boundaries & find your tribe: https://open.substack.com/pub/disabledginger/p/gaslightingforthenewlydisabled?r=19dk2e&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

Listening to the interview helped me piece together a pattern I'd only half perceived before, which is the technoableism suffusing eye care in the US. If you wear glasses you've already experienced this but may not have noticed because it's so fully normalized. Your optometrist does not usually discuss your options for living life without corrective lenses. The typical choices in front of you are "glasses, contact lenses, or both?" and "which is clearer, this one or this other one?"
In other words the unspoken assumption is that you have a problem that needs to be fixed and it can be with a piece of technology. In this way of looking at it, you only need to decide which technology option you want and optimize it to your specific needs.
They're called "corrective lenses". It's right there in the name.
Isn't this harmless, though? What's the problem exactly? Glasses and contact lenses help a lot of people! Yes, it's true, and don't misunderstand; I'm not saying people shouldn't wear glasses. However, things get more sinister if your vision, like mine, cannot be corrected with lenses (1). The same mentality is there: we'll do some tests, figure out a technology that'll fix your problem as well as it can be fixed, and send you on your way. No technology we currently know of will work? No problem, let's get you into some clinical trials, where you'll be a test subject for the latest technological innovations, one of which may help (fix) you.
I've lost track of how many times I've been asked about whether I'm exploring clinical trials or been given materials to guide me in getting into one. I think the folks asking, and the doctors I've had, are caring and well-meaning people. But they're steeped in this. This is how care works, to them. That's where I think the technoableism manifests in this realm (that's where I first perceived it at least).
In reality, "have you explored clinical trials?" is code for "we don't know what to do for you but it's too uncomfortable to say so". It's the pit you land in after bouncing left too many times while falling through the medical establishment's Plinko board. Realistically, these trials are like buying a lottery ticket. In my case, a $3,000 lottery ticket. $3,000 is roughly the cost of the genetic test I'd need to learn enough about my condition to even be considered for such a trial, a cost I've been informed I'd have to pay out of pocket. There's no guarantee the test would reveal anything useful. There's no guarantee there are or ever will be any clinical trials about the specific condition I have. If there is an ongoing clinical trial I qualify for, there's no guarantee they'd accept me into it. There's no guarantee the trial would produce anything that would improve my vision. In essence, "have you explored clinical trials?" translates to "do you have $3,000 and a whole lot of time to throw at a slim chance?".
No, I don't.
Since saying "no" to that path, I've largely been on my own to figure out how to live with very limited vision. There are supports, yes, but I have to find those myself. There are options like remote work, yes, but I have to warp my life to fit into the shapes that make those options workable, and they are always under threat of being negated.
This society is structured to treat what I am as a problem that needs to be solved with technology, but when it fails to provide a technology solution to the problem it tells me I am, it abandons me to fend for myself. That's what's sinister. I used a lot of "I" and "me" because I was sharing a personal anecdote, but there are tens of millions of people in the US in similarly-shaped boats.
Anyway, thanks Mark and thanks Ashley! Very thought provoking.

(1) The situation also gets more sinister if you don't have the means to pay for the technology solutions on offer, or if your ability to visit an optometrist is limited, or ... I chose to focus on just the one dimension I have immediate direct experience with, but there are lots of mechanisms via which people are abandoned.
