- Shure @arte / #arte does good stuff and I tend to check in on @dw_innovation / #DWnews and their original contant, but aside from some show like #MrRobot or #CyberSix I don't even want to track down a physical copy.
- In the past I did more often import stuff like #DoctorWho for friends (because pre-#Brexit #UK made that easy and convenient and being 18+ doesn't cause issues with unrated content...
I'm happily paying full price for good tickets at a theater (instead of asking friends who come along if they can save a Euro or two with their Student Discount) because I believe #artists should not merely survive but thrive and be rewarded for their efforts.
- And I think positive incentives are always good. I want good things and since we live under #capitalism, "Money (or rather the reciept of every transaction) is my ballout - EVERY SINGLE TIME!"
I've been following politics closely for about 50 years now. In my experience, people keep thinking that the current President is ALWAYS the worst that could ever be, and that there will never be a worse one.
It's very safe to say that they are always wrong. There can and will always be a worse President to follow. This all started with Reagan. People swore he was the Antichrist from hell. And within a few years of his death, some of those same people were talking about how respectful and well-mannered and cultured Ronald Reagan was. Same thing happened with George H.W. Bush, George W., etc etc. And I'm not leaving the Democrats out of this, they were unbelievably bad too - despite being sneakier about it.
But everyone wants to believe that Trump is the worst possible. Maybe they need the reassurance of believing that things will never be this bad again. I'm here to tell you that they're completely fucking wrong. Within 4 to 8 years, people will be weeping at the anniversary of Donald Trump's presidency, insisting that he was wonderful and underappreciated compared to whatever Antichrist the oligarchs will have installed in his place.
There will always be worse. Until we end the whole damn system. Which means ending capitalism.
If car ownership feels impossible, now consider that getting around the city by any means feels impossible. If you're in a car you're stuck in traffic, if you're on a bus you're stuck in traffic, if you're on a bike you're stuck in traffic, and if you're on foot you're not allowed to walk anywhere.
Somehow people have been convinced that the only way to get around all this car traffic is to induce more car traffic, and further demonize other means of transportation and their users. This complete disassociation from reason and logic doesn't come naturally, it was paid for by the auto industry.

There are many valid criticisms of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, from "fundamental biological
requirements for survival" through "social connection and acceptance"
to "realising one's full potential.
But none of them suggest extending it to "having more wealth and status than millions of other people, with the power to exercise control over their lives and environment".
Why is it easier for normies to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine an end to #Capitalism?

At the start of the information revolution we were told it would transform capitalism... I was sceptical about that & wrote a book setting out that scepticism - The Information Society: A sceptical view (2002).
Over twenty years later my view that the (so called) information society continues to merely reproduce the worst inequalities of capitalism is regularly confirmed - today by the use of low paid workers to fulfil the services on Only Fans!

I had one of the most disturbing tech support experiences of my life yesterday and the TLDR version is that the tech support company subscribed to the Zoom Info data broker service and was given my private personal cell phone number to contact me about a support issue. [SENSITIVE CONTENT]
So I've been doing some support with one of our department heads that put me in touch via email with the support for a vendor that we're using. Emails go back and forth a few times without much progress and I suddenly get an unexpected call on my personal cell phone while I'm at work. Now like most people my cell phone isn't for phone calls so this was weird. It turns out it was the tech support person I've been emailing with. The short version is a company called Go to
This is most disturbing.
My private cell phone number is not on my work account, not in my email signature, or even have it been given to any of my co-workers because of abuses I've had to deal with in the past.
So for a random tech support person that I've never spoken to to find my private personal contact information and call me on it to finish resolving a support issue is an incredible violation of my privacy.
I'm furious. I know it's not the text problem and they are very intent on resolving this issue and ending the call but I get them to tell me how they got that information before continuing with the support call.
I'm already a little extra pissed because a few months ago I'd finally signed up for the incogny private data deletion service, so I'm expecting to see a reduction in these kinds of incidents. Turns out this is one that they haven't made a business agreement with so they won't remove my data from them. I have to do it. And so do you. Below is a link they provided instructions on how to move yourself from this one specific(of thousands) data broker.

#AI is the aid I've needed my entire life. I'm not going to mince words here. People making blanket statements about the technology without understanding it are my enemies.
My #ADHD is crippling. #LLMs are the exact thing that I've needed. I do not let them do work for me, but they do keep me working by providing constant and immediate feedback to whatever I'm doing.
My work from now till my death is likely going to center on how to make an #llm or any aspirational #AGI aligned with humanity.
Fundamentally, every problem y'all have with #AI was an already existing problem under #capitalism that AI is exposing.
This includes:
- Alienation from labor
- Corporate piracy
- Slop
- Environmental destruction and other externalities
- Wealth inequality
- Replacement of labor with capital
EVERY SINGLE ONE existed before.
Additionally, a ton of the problems, like layoffs, aren't even caused by AI, and blaming them on AI is _specifically_ corporate propaganda for what amounts to a criminal conspiracy by mega corporations to suppress wages.
It is a grim day when the very corporate giants and bankers who have spent years extraction record profits from the Australian public start "warning" us that a recession is the only solution.
Wesfarmers and big bank executives are now pivoting to a narrative where the working class must suffer the "medicine" of an economic downturn to fix the inflation their own corporate greed helped fuel. They’re essentially saying that if they can't keep their profit margins sky-high through price hikes, they’d rather see the country plunged into a recession than see a meaningful tax on wealth or a real cap on the cost of living.
We are being told that the only way to "save" the economy is to destroy the livelihoods of the people who keep it running, while those at the top stay insulated in their boardrooms. The vaunted 'Free Market' is largely a fraud. In order to have a true free market two conditions need to be met:
1) New vendors need to realistically enter the market.
2) Consumers need to realistically be able to not just choose between vendors but to be able to walk away from any purchase and forgo the product/service
The rise of the #oligarchs demonstrates how condition 1 fails to be met. Consolidation of businesses under #capitalism inevitably results in the entry cost for any new vendor becoming unrealistically high, leaving a few large companies to dominate the market.
Condition 2 is an even more egregious violation. Consumers can not realistically walk away from purchasing essentials (food, housing, internet, etc) and thus are not participating in a free market but a compelled market.
Thus it is best for essentials to operate under a planned economy with society as a whole operating under a hybrid economy with a private sector only existing where both conditions can be fulfilled.

Yesterday my wife and I had to pay for a small renovation which necessitated some budget shuffling. Needless to say we didn't make the list of the Richest Canadians. The McLeans and Canadian Business 2025 ranking saw lots of new names, which is surprising because $4.8B only earns you a spot at #40. Tech, primarily AI and data centre related, and cryptocurrency pushed some fortunes upwards, while the usual group of staid family wealth looked on with disdain. The saying "the rich gets richer" holds true as the combined net worth of the 10 wealthiest people on the list is $310 billion, a nearly 20% increase over 2024. It's difficult to read the individual summaries and not be disappointed at the level of wealth disparity with the bottom 50% of Canadians. IMO Governments avoid higher taxes on the wealthy because they believe Capitalism drives the economy, not the people who work for capitalists.

Today in Labor History February 4, 1869: Labor leader and Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) co-founder William D. "Big Bill" Haywood was born. Haywood started mining at age nine. He became secretary-treasurer of the Western Federation of Miners (WFM) in 1900 and co-founded the IWW in 1905. He was a WFM organizer during the Colorado Labor Wars (1903-1904), in which 33 miners were killed.
At the IWW’s first convention (1905), he said, “We are here to confederate the workers of this country into a working-class movement that shall have for its purpose the emancipation of the working-class from the slave bondage of capitalism. The aims and objects of this organization shall be to put the working-class in possession of the economic power, the means of life, in control of the machinery of production and distribution, without regard to capitalist masters.” With the IWW, he came up with the propaganda ploy of sending workers’ kids out of town, for their own safety, during the Lawrence Textile Strike (1912), leading to a media backlash against the mill owners and the ultimate victory for the workers.
In 1907, he was falsely charged with the bombing murder of former Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg, but was acquitted with the counsel of Clarence Darrow. The WFM dismissed him in 1918 because of his radicalism. That same year, the Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis (future first commissioner of Major League Baseball) convicted him of violating the Alien and Sedition acts during the first Red Scare for his antiwar activism. They sentenced him to 20 years in prison. However, he jumped bail and fled to the Soviet Union, where he died in 1928 from heart failure and alcoholism. His ashes were split between the Kremlin Wall Mausoleum and the Haymarket Martyrs Monument in Chicago.
