A favorite of mine. It came around years ago on the Twitter website. I've long lost who to credit.

Thanks to detective work by those more talented than I, it appears to belong to "Ally M Hennessy", used in one of her workshops…

    Ouch... 😅

    A comic of a boy and his mom at a dinner table. Boy says: "Mom, when I grow up I want to be an artist!". Mom says: "Oh honey, you have to decide. You can't do both."

      Probably true.

      My friend is an EMT who spent most his working life as a software developer before changing careers. He just messaged me the following and I'm dying:

      "Yesterday, I asked a patient if he needed to go to the bathroom before transport. Without a word, he peed himself where he stood. It's still better than computers. 🙃"

        Dunning-kruger does have a dark side for the competent.

        I detest bragging about myself, personally. Just not my thing. And yet if you are looking for jobs or promotions, there is something of worth in here.

        I also detest . 🤣

            Dear Mastodon,

            I am a mechanical engineer who is about to make a major change. I have received a job offer from an international company for an Application Engineer position. The role involves supporting (computer-aided design), (product lifecycle management), and (product data management) systems and their underlying infrastructure.

            As far as I know, most of the applications are -based, but there are likely some -like systems involved as well. I do not have formal system administration experience, so I am looking for guidance on which technologies I should focus on to make this transition as smooth as possible. Could you recommend useful books, technologies, or keywords to explore?

            For context, I have homelab-level experience with Linux, networking, SSL, reverse proxying, ZFS, Solaris zones, bhyve, and FreeBSD, and I have been using OpenBSD as my desktop operating system for years.

            Thank you in advance for any or recommendations.

            TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
            - Implementation, configuration, and maintenance of software and systems related to the supported area in line with corporate requirements.
            - Installation, configuration, and maintenance of critical software systems, as well as providing expert-level support to end users.
            - Management of application-related changes, handling major upgrades, and the introduction and testing of new systems and developments.
            - Publishing and testing new releases.
            - System administration and monitoring to ensure the performance and proper operation of supported software and systems.
            - Troubleshooting and problem resolution, including the management of system updates and fixes.
            - Analysis of business requirements and implementation of related processes.
            - Support for project management, including the preparation of documentation and reports.
            - Communication with clients and business units to maintain synergy between business requirements and system solutions.

                The world of LinkedIn in one (perhaps slightly caustic) meme/graphic....

                Graphic comparing...
Reality: I got my driving licence;
LinkedIn: I'm honoured & thrilled to announce that I have been selected among the top five applicants who participated in the professional & respected exam which evaluates the skill & ability to operate fuel-based vehicles. I cannot wait to see what the next chapter holds and I cannot express my appreciation to the ministry of transportation, Google, NASA and my neighbours who supported me during this challenging journey.

                    I'm working on a study of Bronze Age axes, and I find it a little hard to articulate why.

                    * I don't get paid.
                    * Another journal paper won't make any difference for my employability at this stage.
                    * Almost nobody knows or cares that these axes exist.

                    I think the main reasons I do this is

                    * It's fun.
                    * I'm one of the few who can do this well.
                    * I've dedicated my life to expanding our scientific knowledge.

                      Well, I just unsubscribed from yet another artist who has transitioned from artist to career advice guru.

                      I get it—it’s hard to promote one’s art, and artists have been told one should pivot to including any skills one does have in addition to one’s creativity.

                      But that’s *in addition* not *replace*.

                      I only know a few artists deft enough to straddle those two very different worlds, because it’s a balancing act. They are each silos requiring different skillsets, both of which are full-time, almost mutually exclusive jobs.

                      Oy, I liked their walk-through vids.<sigh> Oh well.

                        Welp, after almost 4 years, today is my last day at my current organization. It was quite a ride, but it was time for me to move on. I'll be spending some time re-grouping and re-thinking my career and then looking for my next thing. I might spend a bit of time writing up old research I never published but should. In the past I've done some and might do that again. I'll definitely do some yard work I've been neglecting!
