Climate change to identity: The vital lessons in Metamorphoses, Ovid's 2,000-year-old poem

You might think that Ovid's Metamorphoses, an ancient compendium of the greatest Greek myths, would hold little relevance today. But its tales of desire and deceit reveal surprising parallels with contemporary concerns, from climate change and the refugee crisis to gender-based violence and identity.

Lycian farmers changed into frogs: Latona changes Lycian farmers into frogs, because while they were weeding a marsh, they prevented her and her children from quenching their thirst (Ovid, Metamorphoses VI 369)

Claude Du Bosc / After Jean Jouvenet - Leto verandert de boeren in kikkers, Claude DuBosc, after Jean Baptiste Jouvenet, 1714 - Rijksmuseum

The scene depicts the goddess Leto — mother of Apollo and Artemis by Zeus — fleeing the wrath of Hera after giving birth. Exhausted and thirsty, she stops at a pond in Lycia to drink, but local peasants cruelly prevent her and her infant children from reaching the water, stirring up the mud to make it undrinkable. In fury, she calls upon Jupiter and transforms the peasants into frogs.

"Art is for everybody." — Keith Haring

You carry it the way Haring carried chalk into a tunnel: without asking permission. Art, protest, the act of showing your face — none of it waits for approval. You make the thing. You put it where people have to see it. When they say it doesn't belong, you draw it bigger. Pick up whatever you've got and fucking use it.

Despite the small size, the community represents the largest town in the entirety of the rural county, as well as the county seat. While the Dover-Foxcroft town limits are home to the area of Foxcroft Academy, a notable boarding school for the rural State of Maine, the public facilities include the Maine Whoopie Pie festival in the month of June each year as well as the Freedom House Bed and Breakfast, Bear’s Den Restaurant & Tavern / Log Cabin Motel, and the nearby Blacksmith Shop Museum to the northwest.

Some growing key questions here really are:

How to defend or adapt disciplines (not just artistic/cultural ones) against this kind of semantic hollowing out of what it means to have skills, experience and expertise in a(ny) field...

What approaches, qualities and "values" (physical, ethical, social/humanist, environmental, resource use) should we (or still can we) be focusing on, which are much harder and more costly for AI companies to mine/extract & subvert?

How to defend actual skills against the emulation of skills, or rather just the appearance of skills? How could a society even function if it only encourages and celebrates the latter?

What does society actually value in art/creativity/culture? If art is free to produce (of course that'll always only ever be an illusion!), funding, possession, collection & speculation of new work would also become meaningless (and only benefit pre-AI era works/collectors). In the larger picture, what do people actually value in culture, politics and striving for more peaceful existence which enables more of the former (pluralistic art/culture) in the first place?

What will be the combined impact of AI & robotics on fields which are currently still thinking themselves more safe (from exploitation) because there's a strong physical element/process to them?

Will art/culture/craft become more performance, experiential/ephemeral again only? Like music before recordings or Buddhist sand paintings with an explicit act of destruction at the end as key philosophical concept? Both of which also have more of a social element to them...

Vision of Zacharias in the Temple, 1633 by Rembrandt.

A dark Baroque oil painting dominated by deep browns and blacks, with a single luminous figure at centre-left. An elderly bearded man in magnificent gold-embroidered priestly robes and a jewelled veil or mitre stands reading from an open book on a lectern, his bare feet visible beneath his vestments. A shaft of pale light descends from the upper right into the surrounding darkness. To the right, a richly draped table holds a golden ewer and a staff. Heavy red drapery fills the left background.

The left page is devoted to mechanical studies — five carefully rendered technical drawings arranged vertically, each showing wooden joining or clamping mechanisms in three-quarter perspective. They appear to depict interlocking beams, bolt fastenings, and timber joints of increasing complexity, with short annotating notes flanking each drawing on both sides.

The right page is dominated by a large, commanding drawing of what appears to be the lower torso and hindquarters of a horse rendered as a structural armature — a grid of horizontal and vertical ribs forming a curved, basket-like framework that captures the swelling volume of the animal's form. The gridded surface suggests a mold or internal scaffolding for casting, with the waist cinching inward before flaring out again at the haunches. Dense blocks of mirror-script text surround the drawing on the left and bottom, and a folio number — 157 — is visible in the upper right corner. A faint institutional stamp appears near the bottom center.

The painting depicts a British Columbia coastal landscape with characteristic Carr elements: towering, stylized evergreen trees with distinctive peaked tops rising against a vibrant blue sky rendered with vertical brushstrokes suggesting rain or atmospheric movement. In the foreground, scattered tree stumps and a small structure occupy a clearing of vivid yellow-green grass, with dark forested mountains in the background. The "odds and ends" of the title refers to the remnants of logging—the stumps and cleared land—showing the impact of human activity on the pristine wilderness Carr spent her career documenting.

The larger City of Lebanon is located nearby along the Connecticut River; however, not much is commonly known about the community from outside the region.

                                                                                                    Ithaca, NY

                                                                                                    Princeton, NJ

                                                                                                    Middlebury, VT

Middlebury College is located directly east of the New York state line and west of the Montpelier and Barre areas. Burlington and Rutland are larger cities quite a distance away, to the north and to the south, respectively.

                                                                                                    Alfred, NY

Unlike the other college towns listed, both above and below, Alfred, located in Allegany County, is nearly exclusively associated with the universities within the area, namely Alfred University (private) and Alfred State College (public SUNY). The rare off-campus significance of Alfred is ceramic art and related opportunities in such a rural area, within the Appalachian Mountains yet north of the region typically considered part of “Appalachia.”

                                                                                                    Oberlin, OH

Located in the north-central portion of the State of Ohio, Oberlin is a smaller and somewhat more isolated community within relative reach of the City of Cleveland around an hour to the east. Situated within Lorain County, the community home to Oberlin College is south of Lorain and Elyria but north of the community of Wellington—all within the area historically known as the Connecticut Western Reserve.

                                                                                                    Northfield, MN

The City of Northfield, Minnesota, is home to not one, but two, distinct colleges within the community. While both Carleton and St. Olaf Colleges are private, Carleton is typically identified as prestigious while St. Olaf is identified more as a religious collegiate community. St. Olaf was originally named by the Norwegian community of the region, and both colleges are conveniently located around an hour south of the Minneapolis—St. Paul area, also known as the Twin Cities, largely analogous to the relative locations of Oberlin and Cleveland in northern Ohio.

                                                                                                    Williamstown, MA

While Williams College is not the exclusive cultural significance of the Town of Williamstown, the collegiate community is often identified for the significant prestige associated with campus. Even outside campus, the Town of Williamstown is most notable for the liberal arts community, which also expands into the Clark Art Institute within the town and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) within the adjacent City of North Adams, also near the Vermont state line.

                                                                                                    Amherst, MA

Though officially a city, the Town of Amherst, Massachusetts, officially prefers to retain the traditional “town” naming system. As such, the Town of Amherst remains notable and true to the historical significance of the colleges and universities within the town and surrounding regions. While Mount Holyoke College is located in the Town of South Hadley to the southwest and Smith College is located across the Connecticut River in the City of Northampton to the west, the Town of Amherst is almost exclusively defined by Amherst College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass).

                                                                                                    Brunswick, ME

Though Brunswick is located within Cumberland County, the county home to the City of Portland and the largest share of the population of the State of Maine as a whole, the community is most commonly identified as the home of Bowdoin College first. Harriet Beecher Stowe was perhaps one of the most significant historical figures with connections—even if indirectly so—with Bowdoin.

                                                                                                    Lewiston, ME

The second-largest city in the State of Maine and one-half of the urbanized area of Androscoggin County, the City of Lewiston is most notable for being home to Bates College, while the adjacent City of Auburn serves as the county seat. Interestingly, however, Lewiston serves as a city in the State of Maine with a Francophone population base out of the ordinary for such a southern latitude located within.

                                                                                                    Waterville, ME

Only Colby College is typically categorized with Bates and Bowdoin, with the role of a consortium for select intents and purposes.

He explains that completely closing the facility will result in faster, higher‑quality construction than trying to keep events running during the work, and says the project will transform a tired, financially and structurally troubled center into a world‑class performing arts facility and “bastion of arts, music, and entertainment.”

He explains that completely closing the facility will result in faster, higher‑quality construction than trying to keep events running during the work, and says the project will transform a tired, financially and structurally troubled center into a world‑class performing arts facility and “bastion of arts, music, and entertainment.”
