Here's another thing I apparently never posted here - my Sony PocketStation.
Sony's answer to Sega's VMU!
Organiser, clock, minigames!
Planned for release outside of Japan but it never happened, though some NA games still released with support for it like FFVIII.
Still not feeling great, but figured today would be a great day to finally test out the entirety of the custom FF6 cart I built so long ago. Broke out the Sony PVM-2530, got everything hooked up, and now it's time to beat all of the things down.
The SNES is modded with Voultar's SNESRGB mod, and the video/audio goes out via a SCART connector into the SCART switch (`gscart`), then into the CMPTR adapter, _then_ into the Sony PVM.
I do have two SCART switches, and if you're looking at buying one just get the `gscart` switch. The Mini Hydra is the most temperamental thing I've ever had the honor of paying money for...
Almost 22 years have passed since this photo was taken, in my university-era bedroom.
I had already graduated and I was doing things I truly enjoyed.
I was about to move out, even though nobody knew it (I was taking notes on my Palm about what to pack, but messiness was the norm, so no one got suspicious). I also had a slightly swollen gum, so I was smiling without showing my teeth, and I had mouthwash on the desk.
And that smile was one of mysterious satisfaction, anticipating what was about to happen soon.
Perhaps the most enigmatic Italian smile since the Mona Lisa.

I spotted someone sharing their #Sony #PSP mod which 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘭𝘺 improves battery life. Increasing what is typical for the battery (1400 mAh) to a utterly crazy 7200 mAh version.
RoyHehe wanted to see how much battery life you could feasibly fit inside the console, which required removing the UMD drive, RF shielding and you have to trim shell in a lot of places, too.
So maybe not for the faint of heart?
Still, I love these ridiculous #gaming efforts
Frankly it reads to me like an admission of their own guilt, the "brazen theft" being a projection, mens rea expressed as legal action.

Obviously the #zeebo flopped, espechally due to #Qualcomm's #BREW #OS ¹ which is basically '#JavaMobile but worse in order to circumvent #SoftwarePatents' whilst also having dogshit performance and being hard to develop for or even port games to, making it even worse than #Gizmondo or #NGage which used #J2ME.
But even in a starved market like #Brazil most households weren't gonna dump over 1 month minimum wage on an aging #3G-#Cellphone with composite video and 6-button #USB #controllers.
So yeah, blame Qualcomm for this shitshow...
And lets be honest, #Edutainment is not a cash cow because in places like #Mexico it's way easier to get even cheaper #PC|s due to #NAFTA #FreeTrade (i.e. all the stuff #refurbishers couldn't sell in the #USA anymore got offered there before being sold further south...
Needless to say the Zeebo is the strongest argument for #StopKillingGames as these devices are nearly useless these days and piracy is the only way to get / change games on it and play them these days.
Nowadays the nieche of the zeebo is served by cheap #PCs for #gaming even cheaper #Android devices and (aside from few stores like #Steam that managed to upstell a #DRM as a #feature), rampant #piracy to the point that #MobileGaming outside of #iOS is basically dead unless we account #PayToLoose #Shovelware of the "#DisguisedGambingGame" kind as "#Gaming" which is an insult even for #gambling, because there at least in theory, with a honest operator the chance of winning is greater than zero (tho I'd still disrecommend it because no gambling game is *"fair" beyond the theoretical chance of winning by the rules)...
@adr same...
I just know that "#Valve is not #Sony" and that they ain't fighting a war of 5 fronts nor willing to subsidize a product like Sony did with the #PS3 which at launch costed them at least $800 to build.
#GabeN may not admit to it but #Windows8Bing and #Microsoft's attempts at killing off 3rd party game and software stores made his blood freeze and boil at the same time because just as #GabeNewell was ex-#Microsoft and they usually botch their initial attempts, he knew that #Windows10S and #Windows11 would come and try to choke Steam out of the platform.
Cuz remember: Whilst Valve is not a publicly traded company, they still are share-held and thus has to further the interests of said shareholders.
In the end, Everyone from #AMD to #Valve to the #Retailers selling the #SteamMachine and #SteamVouchers are doing this for the money. #HappyConsumers are a nice side effect but in #capitalism, #monopolies (and Steam is effectively a monopoly by market share) don't have consumers' interests in mind.
@adr Granted, just by the hardware parts they'd loose out if they were to sell at €749 (you can thank the #AIbubble as well as #RAM & #NAND - #Tripol #Cartel and lack of #regulation for that).
Everyone who expects this a €499 box is fucking dellusional at this point, because with the current memory prices and expected developments people would just buy truckloads of them to harvest the #GabeCube for it's #RAM, #SSD & #VRAM and scrap the rest.
If the #GabeCube is competitive priced if not cheaper than equivalent #Desktops and #Servers then we'd see every #business with "strategic procurement" just buy literal truckloads expecting #DRAM & #Flash prices to not come down this upgrade cycle (aka. within 5 years) but still needing some machines to work with as the heightened prices - like the #ChipShortage before - will strangulate the #UsedMarket.
So do expect the #Gabecube to cost way more than €749 + VAT and closer to €999 than €749 since #Poland has a low #VAT / #GST rate and is a 'low income' place (compared to the EU-Average)...

holeeee christ on a cracker
so back from as far back as the late 1990s until last year there was an ongoing myth repeated over and over: "Sony's proprietary MicroMV camcorders are not supported on Apple computers. You must capture from a Windows 2000/Vista computer."
these kinds of myths get spread around because no one actually *tries* something different
if you don't recognize "micromv" tapes, you're among the majority. they were the tiniest tape format that sony built into its handycams. they're about the size of a microcassette tape (1/5th the size of a minidv), and store 60 minutes of 480p video.
you can see the one i bought a few months ago here:
https://mastodon.tomodori.net/@vga256/115499504884696392
the DCR-IP handycams are gorgeous and tiny. the problem is with getting your footage off of the camera. they all have a firewire (IEEE1394) port for capturing the tape's video+audio to a computer. unfortunately, sony packaged them up with some truly horrendous Windows 2000-based software (MovieShaker - as bad as it sounds)
people who hooked up their camcorders to their iMac G3/G4's were shocked: iMovie and (later) Final Cut didn't see the camera at all. Sony's response: go buy a Windows computer with a firewire card. you can imagine how many people were so pissed off that they sold their micromv camcorders and never went back
as much as i love windows 2000, there is no f'ing way i am building a PC just to capture my video tapes.
today i decided that, hell or high water, i was going to get my micromv tape footage transferred from my camera to my iMac G5 20-inch which i am still in love with after 20+ years.
5/X
finally, here it is - a minute of video captured from a sony DCR-IP5 MicroMV camera. afaik, this is the first time a micromv tape has ever been transferred to an apple computer. (and for no good reason, aside from nobody trying it!)

My original #playstation that I've had since high school seems to have a failing disc drive, so I couldn't say no to this cheap find at #savers thrift store (a New England chain that I no longer have access to since I live in New York now).
It even came with a free copy of #grandtheftauto3 (more likely, an enployee at Savers forgot to check for a disc or didn't care about pulling it to sell seperately)! Sure, it's a PS2 game so it won't work on a PSX and I already have two copies of it, but why not?
Also, LOL at the #thrillkill sticker. I'm keeping that on it, for sure.

If you missed this. The brands in question are Sony, Samsung, LG, Hisense and TCL. These companies allegedly recorded "what viewers watch without their consent. The predatory technology, Automated Content Recognition (ACR), identifies the content being played on a device by matching short content fingerprints to a database."

#Texas sues #TV makers for taking screenshots of what people watch
The lawsuits target #Sony, #Samsung, #LG, and #China-based companies #Hisense and #TCL. According to complaints filed in Texas state courts, the TV makers can allegedly use #ACR technology to capture screenshots of television displays every 500 milliseconds, monitor the users' viewing activity in real time, and send this information back to the companies' servers without the users' knowledge or consent.
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/texas-sues-tv-makers-for-spying-on-users-selling-data-without-consent/
"Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued five large TV manufacturers yesterday, alleging that their smart TVs spy on viewers without consent. Paxton sued Samsung, the longtime TV market share leader, along with LG, Sony, Hisense, and TCL.
“These companies have been unlawfully collecting personal data through Automated Content Recognition (‘ACR’) technology,” Paxton’s office alleged in a press release that contains links to all five lawsuits. “ACR in its simplest terms is an uninvited, invisible digital invader. This software can capture screenshots of a user’s television display every 500 milliseconds, monitor viewing activity in real time, and transmit that information back to the company without the user’s knowledge or consent. The companies then sell that consumer information to target ads across platforms for a profit. This technology puts users’ privacy and sensitive information, such as passwords, bank information, and other personal information at risk.”
The lawsuits allege violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, seeking damages of up to $10,000 for each violation and up to $250,000 for each violation affecting people 65 years or older. Texas also wants restraining orders prohibiting the collection, sharing, and selling of ACR data while the lawsuits are pending."

@ra1n yes and no.
Also #Sony scrapped the #FreeMultiplayer later in the #PS3 lifecycle by paywalling #PSN too.
Plus it did make it longterm sustainable because it does incur costs that would've to be paid and Sony did subsidize their service with ~ $5 more in #licensing fees per full-price AAA retail disc game.

Turning it off on Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense, and TCL requires digging through menus but reduces profiling 🔧

@StarkRG yes and all these criticisms I do share as they are all valid.
I mean, #Valve's #Steam basically is the #monopoly and refusing to sell on Steam is basically suicidal for #IndieDevs...
Not "genius" but "criminally incompetent competiton" from #EA, #EpicGames, #Xbox / #Microsoft, #Playstation / #Sony and #Nintendo is why #GabeN can just "Thanos - Snap" basically "look like a saint"...
@raccoon granted, #Valve did already commit themselves to it being "open like a PC" so they can't sell at a loss. They at least need to break even in terms of cost to avoid businesses like datacenters to go: "Hey, that's pretty good!" and order like 1000+...
Anyone who thinks the #SteamMachine aka. #GabeCube / #GabenCube will be a $499 thing or even a $749 thing needs to get updated on #pricing for #hardware.
Thanks to the "#AI" #Scamconomy, #PriceFixing and #OpenAI buying 40% of global #DRAM production output due to #Trump's "#Stargate" shitshow and the circular #Scam #economy associated, the 2x16GB #DDR5-SODIMMs (even if those were slow -4800 and not the recommended #Zen4 -6000 speeds) will cost about $250+ as of today.
#SSD|s too - which use the same chip dabs - also climb beyond $100 per TB or > $50 for a 512 GB #NVMe.
So already these components are $300+ as of today, and industry insiders claim this will get much worse so I'm not even shure a $999 pricetag will be possible by Q1/2026. Not to mention the 8GB VRAM of the built-on, dedicaded #GPU!
The only reason why noone expects Apple to raise prices is because they already shaft their buyers by overcharging them for their #SolderedDownRAM & #SolderedDownSSDs and they tend to buy not just huge quantites, paying above.market, but alsov*fewer, higher capacity* chips.

Let's face it. Xbox has never and will never race in this lane, and Microsoft knows it. The only question is how does this compare with Nintendo's sales?
Engadget: Sony has sold 84.2 million PlayStation 5s since launch more than a year ago https://www.engadget.com/gaming/playstation/sony-has-sold-842-million-playstation-5s-since-launch-123004469.html @Engadget #Sony #PlayStation #PS5
This might not be a fair comparison, but it took more than a year for Sony to get these results. In contrast, Nintendo has sold more than 10 million Switch 2 units since its June launch https://variety.com/2025/digital/news/nintendo-switch-2-sales-10-million-1236569355/ #Nintendo
