The whole LLM bubble has thrown a massive locomotive in my chain off storage.
It is now not feasible for me to buy USB sticks SSDs HDDs hard drives just to experiment.
Without experimenting I will not learn how to properly use new operating systems.
I have still not be able to test illumos in a proper manner...
To give an indication of the markup difference that I have, an 8TB hard drive which had cost me USD140 is now close to USD 400
A 64 GB microSD card went from USD 5 to USD 20 which throws a wrench into my Raspberry Pi operations.
USB sticks also went the same route. I use those to boot up the raspberry pies so that I can feed the micro SD cards with data
I've had quite a few HDD fail and some SATA SSD fail. All within the past two year and a half, and this is storage that I was planning to replace in this year.
It's a strange world that we now need data center projects in order to get small amounts of storage for own home use.

my server had been down for like 5 days now. Now im stuck on this stupid place and don't even have acces to my nas. Then I found out I spend the last day and a half copying the wrong drive with ddrescue. Im soo done with this shit. I have decade old hard drives but ask a ssd to do more then 3 years hell no. I want a server that could run forever if electricity is provided. Ssds make it impossible. 3 months of 15 vms that probably didn't even do 500gb per day in total killed a drive that supposed to have a rw capacity of 2400 tb. Also I hate bluesky with its stupid twitter like post limit of 500. My mastodon had a limit of 65536. You could write a small book with that. And now that I have to copy shit with ddrescue again but instead of getting the same or better performance since its a ssd copying to a USB harddrive compared to a USB harddrive to the same USB harddrive its 30 times slower at peak. And that USB harddrive is 1tb bigger. now some might say just use the last backup. Well to even acces ir i need a vm on that ssd because nobody plans that ssd especially one from a reputable brand like samsung dies after 4 months of use. Even if mine was rather extreme compared to the usual use of one of them. it's ridiculousthat only 50 bad sectors and a passed smart test causes all the data to be inaccessible. Also the expectationthat I have backups that can survivea nuke is unrealistic. If i had the money i wouldn't use decade old hardware. Now you might say just play video games on your gaming pc. Well i don't have one, all my desktops are on my server and the only other computer that could game properly is copying the drive. I pirated gamesI alreadyown on a laptop for just to play some shitty DM for a dozen mins. This thread is probablybecoming longer then any serious post I made on the fediverse. Anyways now that i dont have a ssd for vms ig i gotta use a dozen decade old hard drives from the discard pile of a graphics design studio since im broke and you cant run multiple windows on a single harddrive cause that shit fucking lagggs. Im so done with this shit, i can even torture myself by editing long overdue videos and ive watched so many video essays that I can't watch anymore. I might just start looking on ebay for like epyc Rome shit or something. HAHA I GOT IT TO COPY AT 135MB/s. So now it's done at 0000... great. STILL BETTER THEN 10 DAYS HAHHAHAHAHAHAHHS OR THE PREVIOUS DAY AND THEN SOME ONTOP JAHAHHAHAHSHSHDHDHHDJDJFHDJDJDJDHHFJDJDJDHDJJFHDHDHFHNFJFNJDJFKFJFJDJDHFH it wasn't done, ddrescuetime calc sucks ass like it's not gonna be like 12 hours instead of 8... all the copying was fine no errors ddrescue didn't see any faulty sectors and yet all my data is shot. I can't boot truenas nor can I extract the config of it.

We need to educate our elderly that many things they see on Walled Gardens, spoken by what looks like people, are in fact just Avatars generated with Large Language Models.
These things will
- show whatever you like to see
- say whatever you like to hear
- become your personal echo chamber
- lie and hallucinate to make you feel Superior
to accomplish that you stay there much longer than normal!!!
You are literally the battery that feeds that large language model and thus the Walled Garden
These things now look so good, that they are difficult to distinguish from the real thing, a recorded living person, unless you look frame by frame, like I have from time to time.
What will tip you off is that they will say exactly what you want to hear they'll show themselves exactly how you like to see them, they will even sound like the way you want them to do.
Many Walled Garden clients have been recording our voices and phrases for years, thus that was easily to accomplish.
So not only do these things steal our ability to buy SSDs memory GPU and APU for normal prices, they also critically mislead our elderly and those who are LLM computer illiterate.
That can be a billion people

My main server now has two #Toshiba hard drives. I have no idea why they are so unpopular in the #selfhosting community when they are cheap, quiet, and reliable. I suppose #WD and #Seagate have good marketing departments.

Stecken in einem alten NAS noch Speichermedien, die man gerne anderweitig verwenden möchte? Oder hat das NAS-Hardware Fehler und man muss Daten retten? In solchen Fällen kann ein Linux-System in Kombination mit einer Docking-Station hilfreich sein.
Linux Mint: Ich habe ja die beiden Festplatten aus der Synology geholt und in eine Docking Station gesteckt. Nun hat mich interessiert, ob Linux Mint den RAID 1 - Verbund aktivieren kann - nach ein paar Terminal-Befehlen hat das tatsächlich geklappt.
Könnte auch nützlich für NAS-Anwender sein, falls die NAS-Hardware einen Fehler hat ...

SSD death ☠️💀
I am busy rebuilding the data from an SSD which died all of a sudden from one moment to the next without giving any warnings in any manner in any way.
I always monitor SMART output of SSD drives & mechanical spinners (HDD)
I've not seen any smart output indicating imminante dead
This drive has acted like your girlfriend when she's just not in a good mood and without explanation says nothing to you in the morning, for hours.
This hard crash, means that the S.M.A.R.T. monitoring hardware didn't have proper Communications with the integrated circuits on the SSD.
The drive was always powered many times a month, never left without power for more than a week or so, thus that has not been a contributing factor to the SSD catastrophic failure
The drive itself is fairly small.
The data on this dead SSD I've backed up on remote drives connected in JBOD format to machines which I have running remotely.
No ZFS on my backup machines
- I want to run ZFS native
- that means running a BSD OS on those machines
- that also means I will need to backup / restore all data on those drives meaning
- I will need 200% of the used HDD / SSD space on those machines
- I need patience for that backup
- I need expensive extra HDD's for that project
- I won't pay USD 300 for a USD 120 HDD
NO ZFS under these global SSD / HDD market prices
