    RE: social.openrightsgroup.org/@op

I've mostly started over in terms of my online accounts. Deleted almost everything.

    - Services like reddit, I can usually get what I want just by browsing without an account.
    - The only social site I have an account on is Mastodon.
    - Chat/group chat is Signal

If you don't NEED an account delete it, don't create one. Weed out everything and minimize your exposure to invasive data collection and surveillance. And, when you do sign-up for a service, use an alias-email offered by services like Proton or MySudo. Generally, just be more proactive in what services you use and how you use them. And be willing to walk away from them if they start to get grabby.

And take a hard line with your family and friends. Compromise less or not at all. In 2026 privacy is the priority, not convenience.

I don't want or need most of the services I've come across.

When I was in school (back when dinos roamed the earth) the problem was we didn't have enough . So much of our business school education was around how to find data, how to collect data, how to make decisions with limited data.

Today we have the opposite problem. We're DROWNING in data...but now we have to figure out how to sort out the signal from the noise. How to identify which data is actionable and make good decisions from that.

Name suffixes - a mark of the patriarchy.

This is a summary table of a registered voter list for a county in New Mexico (United States). The occurrence count of various name suffixes is further broken down by gender.

I have no idea how this may compare to name suffixes in other countries, other cultures.

This is not a scientific study. There are all sorts of problems, such as selection bias.

But the difference in occurrence between men and women is huge.

TikTok is tracking you, even if you don't use the app. Here's how to stop it

„TikTok keeps track of everything you do on its app – no surprises there. What's less obvious is how the company follows you around other parts of the internet that have nothing to do with TikTok.
In fact, TikTok collects sensitive and potentially embarrassing information about you even if you've never used the app. Over the past week, I've watched websites sending TikTok data about cancer diagnoses, fertility and even mental health crises. It's part of a tracking empire that extends far beyond the social media platform. Now, thanks to a new set of features, TikTok is poised to expand its network and see even more details about your life….“

💠 Holographic storage used to be the stuff of science fiction or expensive, failed experiments. We usually expect massive capacity at the cost of proprietary hardware that forces us to throw away everything we already built. HoloMem is taking a different path by making holographic tech work inside the tape libraries you already have in your data center. 😳 The move from magnetic tape to light-sensitive polymer ribbons is the core of this change. These cartridges look like standard LTO units but hold eleven times the data on a ribbon that is ten times shorter. Because the polymer is physically stable, you can turn off the air conditioning in your archive room and walk away for fifty years.

🧠 The system uses a five-dollar laser diode to write data as volumetric voxels.
⚡ One 200TB cartridge replaces more than ten LTO-10 tapes.
🎓 Software sees the HoloDrive as a standard LTO device for easy adoption.
🔍 Field trials in UK data centers show the tech works with existing robotic arms.

They also have targeted people with work permits, asylum seekers, permanent residents (people holding “green cards”), naturalized citizens, and even citizens by birth. ICE has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on surveillance technology to spy on anyone—and potentially everyone—in the United States. It can be hard to imagine how to defend oneself against such an overwhelming force.

But a few enterprising hackers have started projects to do counter surveillance against ICE, and hopefully protect their communities through clever use of technology….‘

Someone I know told me they had a awful interaction with Blue Cross and Blue Shield this week setting up their new Medicare plan.

She was setting up their new account and verifying their identity. Blue Cross asked several multiple choice questions with historical data. You know the kind. "Which car in the past have your owned." "Pick the town you once lived in" "Where did you once work."

The one that got them in the throat was, "Which person did you used to reside with and their current city and state."

It was her ex from over 40 years ago who she hasn't seen since then and tried hard to recover from because the relationship was extremely physically and mentally abusive and ended with a restraining order against the ex. The ex ended up going to jail.

They pull all this data and merge and link it with everybody. Who knows what they have and the sources these data harvesters use.

It really disturbed this person and brought up a lot of , esp around Christmas time.

Here's the uncomfortable truth—AI doesn't clean up your mess. It makes it louder. Faster. More confident-sounding. And potentially more damaging.

Data scattered across personal drives, legacy servers, and random SharePoint sites? AI will find it.

Inconsistent permissions nobody remembers setting up? AI will exploit them. Architectural spaghetti connecting clouds, on-prem systems, and platforms that were never meant to talk to each other? AI will inherit every flaw and present the results with the certainty of an oracle.

This conversation digs into what real readiness looks like—data classification, access controls, architectural clarity, and governance that doesn't get bypassed because someone in sales wanted a shiny new copilot.

Watch. Listen. Think before you deploy.
