What a rotten #capitalist system. "Everything goes" and ironically, everybody who has something meaningful to give back to society is broke at the same time because it is that minimalist and decadent capitalist system with its stupid monetary policies that refuses to budge for us. The lunatics leading this Ship of Fools have spent so much money on war and funding the billionaires' projects (DoD and military spending) while the companies have invested so much in surveillance capitalism to make the billionaires wealthy it's amazing we still have anything left of the incredible shrinking middle class.
The President of the United States doesn't want you to read the part below about what surveillance capitalism is, because that type of capitalism is how our fat lunatic and leader made over two billion dollars this year just from computers minting cryptocoins. DO THIS. BUY THAT. THINK THIS WAY. HEY, NO THANKS, CRAZY BLONDE GRANDPA. TAKE YOUR PILLS, GO TO BED, AND SOMEBODY MAKE DAMN SURE THAT THIS BELLICOSE MAN IS NOT ANYWHERE NEAR THE NUCLEAR FOOTBALL OR SATCHEL WITH ITS ALL-IMPORTANT LAUNCH CODES.
Here is the core idea of surveillance capitalism, according to Claude dot ai.
------
It describes an economic system where companies generate profit primarily by collecting and monetizing personal data — often gathered without people fully understanding or consenting to how it's used. The basic pattern:
Extraction – Companies harvest data from your behavior: clicks, searches, location, purchases, even how long you pause on a video.
Analysis – That raw #data gets processed to predict and influence future behavior (what you'll buy, click, watch, or believe).
Monetization – These predictions are sold, mainly to advertisers, but also to other buyers interested in shaping behavior.
People will say you have no expectation of privacy in public, and that is true, but it's not what we're actually talking about.
For the VAST majority of human history, we had no expectation of being *recorded*.
It's only the last few decades that that was even possible.
Our laws need to catch up.
Hello friends in fediverse,

Europe's unique strengths are in encryption and security. If we look at companies and organizations like Proton, Wire and Threema, we can see that the European innovation is about privacy, data security and trust.
Europe has strong potential to become global superpower regarding these areas. Made in Europe means made with privacy-by-design and security-by-design principles.
Europe can offer the world the most secure, trusted and privacy-oriented solutions. What it needs to do is to embrace this path and recognize its own strengths.

Ohhhh....this is going to be *a lot* more than 226GB. Only some of the Google Photos found their new home for whatever reason. I had it sync'd to my old #TrueNAS box, but apparently a lot are missing. Doing the whole Google Takeout thing. 172GB of photos split into 2GB zip files.
And then dedup them. Yay! 🤦 🤯

Well *that* is inconvenient....
So the new cloud provider I'm using is Jottacloud out of Norway. Unlimited data for $119/year. Not bad. Really, I just need it to archive data from TrueNAS (building a more capable NAS this weekend). Jottacloud has separate sections for Files and Photos/videos. The latter functions like Google Photos.
I just discovered a few minutes ago you *cannot* move content from the Photo section to the Files section. The only way is to download all the data and then re-upload it into the Files section!
This was after I've uploaded close to a half terabyte of photos and videos too. I wish I knew that ahead of time. As per the Help section, this is by design. Ugh....

Update. This article in Nature makes the case that reusing #OpenData for new purposes is a good solution for "cash-strapped and early-career researchers" who don't have the means to generate their own.
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-00434-x
True enough. But it undervalues the utility of past data for all relevant new projects, even well-funded new projects. The present thread gives some examples. Open data are not only, and not even primarily, for the indigent. They're for the savvy, those who notice their relevance, regardless of means.
Update. Here's a great opportunity to #reuse older #data for contemporary #climate research.

Update. Here's a good example of the #reuse of older #data in #psychology and #linguistics.
"Highly gendered languages are linked to larger personality differences between men and women."
https://www.psypost.org/highly-gendered-languages-are-linked-to-larger-personality-differences-between-men-and-women/
From co-author Roxana Hofmann: "We wanted to highlight how grateful we are for all the people who made the data public, which allowed us to test our research question. This included the anonymized personality trait data assessed across multiple countries, language typologies from the World Atlas of Language Structures, and also pretrained word embeddings that allowed us to estimate the gender association of words across multiple languages."
Despite this, the authors chose to publish in a paywalled journal.

"Trusted climate information should not disappear when politics change."
The government climate information website shuttered by Trump to hide the truth is back as a non-profit, run by folks DOGE purged.
All of the content that was deleted from the .gov is now back, along with blogs from experts, climate status reports, maps and data pathways, and national assessments of climate change.

my server had been down for like 5 days now. Now im stuck on this stupid place and don't even have acces to my nas. Then I found out I spend the last day and a half copying the wrong drive with ddrescue. Im soo done with this shit. I have decade old hard drives but ask a ssd to do more then 3 years hell no. I want a server that could run forever if electricity is provided. Ssds make it impossible. 3 months of 15 vms that probably didn't even do 500gb per day in total killed a drive that supposed to have a rw capacity of 2400 tb. Also I hate bluesky with its stupid twitter like post limit of 500. My mastodon had a limit of 65536. You could write a small book with that. And now that I have to copy shit with ddrescue again but instead of getting the same or better performance since its a ssd copying to a USB harddrive compared to a USB harddrive to the same USB harddrive its 30 times slower at peak. And that USB harddrive is 1tb bigger. now some might say just use the last backup. Well to even acces ir i need a vm on that ssd because nobody plans that ssd especially one from a reputable brand like samsung dies after 4 months of use. Even if mine was rather extreme compared to the usual use of one of them. it's ridiculousthat only 50 bad sectors and a passed smart test causes all the data to be inaccessible. Also the expectationthat I have backups that can survivea nuke is unrealistic. If i had the money i wouldn't use decade old hardware. Now you might say just play video games on your gaming pc. Well i don't have one, all my desktops are on my server and the only other computer that could game properly is copying the drive. I pirated gamesI alreadyown on a laptop for just to play some shitty DM for a dozen mins. This thread is probablybecoming longer then any serious post I made on the fediverse. Anyways now that i dont have a ssd for vms ig i gotta use a dozen decade old hard drives from the discard pile of a graphics design studio since im broke and you cant run multiple windows on a single harddrive cause that shit fucking lagggs. Im so done with this shit, i can even torture myself by editing long overdue videos and ive watched so many video essays that I can't watch anymore. I might just start looking on ebay for like epyc Rome shit or something. HAHA I GOT IT TO COPY AT 135MB/s. So now it's done at 0000... great. STILL BETTER THEN 10 DAYS HAHHAHAHAHAHAHHS OR THE PREVIOUS DAY AND THEN SOME ONTOP JAHAHHAHAHSHSHDHDHHDJDJFHDJDJDJDHHFJDJDJDHDJJFHDHDHFHNFJFNJDJFKFJFJDJDHFH it wasn't done, ddrescuetime calc sucks ass like it's not gonna be like 12 hours instead of 8... all the copying was fine no errors ddrescue didn't see any faulty sectors and yet all my data is shot. I can't boot truenas nor can I extract the config of it.

I've been using weather.com for years for weather/forecast info but switched to AccuWeather about six months ago, partly because #Firefox was shoving it in my face on every new tab and partly because the former site was bombarding me with ads and sluggish web performance.
Recently, I've started using the National Weather Service, weather.gov. The wealth of information they provide upfront is great, too.
While there is some variation between all three sources, Accuweather.com has been, interestingly, the least accurate.
I was under the impression these 3rd party sites source their data from the NWS. But I guess this isn't the case?! 🤔

Your periodic reminder that #AI cannot even *see* the #future, much less *be* the future.
No matter how much #data a model trains on, it cannot create anything #original.
This is among the reasons why AI cannot replace #people. Every #job, even the simplest, requires the person doing it to be able to respond to something new and unforeseen.
This is something people often get wrong. We use the word #accident because sometimes things go wrong despite an individual's or group's #training and #experience. This use of the word "training" is different from what #techbros mean when they use it to describe their AI #models. Which is *another* reason why it can't reliably do what people do.
RE: https://techhub.social/@Techmeme/116606089296164399
Remember this whenever you hear claims that your data is secure on some system or other that you do not own and control.
Like all that additional data governments want to gather via the slippery slope of “age verification” in the EU.
The only data that is actually secure on a third party is data you haven’t shared with the third party.
Hence: data minimisation.

#Apple lies. I'm not surprised *that* this is true; I'm surprised *how* this manifests.
I was looking for a #game in the #AppStore. Not a specific game, but some kind of puzzle game that has reasonable #privacy practices.
Apple is *all* about how their #App Store has only curated #apps.
There are up to three parts to this standard disclosure. This particular set has the following:
- #Data shared across all the apps on your device that is used to #track you
- Data linked to your #identity that the app is not specifically sharing
- Data that is *not* linked to you with no indication whether or how it's shared
This particular set lists #Identifiers in both the "Data Used to Track You" section and the "Data Not Linked to You" and these are mutually exclusive.
Same for #UsageData that is "Data Linked to your Identity" and "Data Not Linked to You"
wtaf?
There's some kinda #fraud happening here, though I can't say I'm shocked. #Logic should prevent this listing from even being possible. You cannot track me with something not linked to my identity. Likewise, something cannot be both linked to my identity and *not* linked to my identity. I'm not the brightest cookie in the drawer, but this isn't rocket surgery, either.
And no, I didn't install that game.

- It's a #risk management story. The platform was not rejected because it failed to perform. On the contrary, it delivered advanced data fusion and operational insight.
It was rejected because the residual sovereignty risk was considered unacceptable.

AND…all of those stories about how the turbines kill birds is just oil-industry propaganda.

I've written before on here about my favorite metaphor, eating your seed corn ( https://buc.ci/abucci/p/1705679109.757852 ), but I also think there's a decent analogy with peak oil as well. Microsoft Recall is the tar sands and oil shale of the "data is the new oil" era. The internet had the easy fields; now we're moving on to the dirty, dangerous, environment-destroying ones. If the pattern follows that of oil, wells will be drilled closer and closer together over time to slurp out value as rapidly as possible at the expense of long-term field health.

If you accept the viewpoint of ecological rationality, data (about people) is not nearly as useful for predictive purposes as it's made out to be. There is a "less is more" phenomenon in many applications, especially those that claim to predict behaviors or outcomes of some kind. See also this talk: https://www.cs.princeton.edu/news/how-recognize-ai-snake-oil .
There is a "less is more" effect with food, too. People need a baseline amount of food to maintain health, but having significantly more food than that doesn't confer significantly more health. Also food can spoil if one hoards it.
If data is a liquid, it's more like milk than oil.
