Please copy and paste into the form on the website of your Senators. Please share with friends. congress.gov/contact-us

                Dear Senator -

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget for fiscal 2026 is mired in committee because the White House insists on changing the manner in which grants are delivered.

According to Politico, “the NIH is the largest funder of health research in the world.” In order to concurrently move forward the most promising, lifesaving and needed medical research, NIH delivers its funding each year of a project. For example, a four-year project costing $2 million would receive $500,000 (25%) of its funding the first year.

This historical process enables NIH to fund more grants than if it awarded the entire amount the first year. That latter plan is what the White House wants. The difference: fund four research proposals seeking $2 million each or pick only one to fund. Grants to four projects means more than one avenue has gotten a green light. These are highly competitive grants: in fiscal 2024, only one in five were funded.

Those of us burdened with chronic or acute disease – either ourselves, friends or family -- urge you to oppose the White House plan which would reduce the number of concurrent research projects.

Please preserve bipartisan support for the historical NIH funding process in the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies (Labor HHS) bill.

The Trump administration will review frozen grants to universities ✅without using its controversial standards that discouraged gender, race and sexual orientation initiatives and vaccine research.

In a settlement agreement filed in Massachusetts federal court Monday, the National Institutes of Health and a group of Democratic attorneys general who’d challenged the new criteria for said the would consider grant applications made up to Sept. 29, 2025, 👍without judging the efforts related to diversity, equity and inclusion, or , or .

The settlement provides an uncontested path for the agency while courts decide whether the administration can use its controversial analysis.
❌The administration did not agree to permanently ditch its campaign to evaluate health research funding decisions based on schools’ DEI programs.
⭐️NIH officials “will complete their consideration of the Applications in the ordinary course of NIH’s scientific review process, without applying the Challenged Directives,” the settlement said, adding that the agency would “evaluate each application individually and in good faith.”
The settlement was signed by U.S. Department of Justice lawyers and the attorneys general of Massachusetts, California, Maryland, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.

Effective Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, the NIH Clinical Center will resume masking in all patient care areas.

This means wearing a mask will be REQUIRED in all patient care areas, including waiting rooms. This change is due to an anticipated increase in COVID-19 and other respiratory virus activity in the community.

For patients who will be admitted to the inpatient unit (and their rooming in visitors), please note that testing for SARS-CoV-2, Influenza A, Influenza B, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) will also be in effect. For rooming in visitors, testing for SARS-CoV-2 will be in effect.

From https://www.cc.nih.gov/patient-services/masking-policy , the US National Institutes of Health.

Wear a damn mask even if you're not at the NIH. You know you should.
