This is me i.e. I only mask some of the time (basically most activities except social ones).

Dr. Lucky Tran @luckytran
It's an anti-masker tactic to claim that if you don't wear a mask 100% of the time, it isn't worth it. Untrue. Every single time you wear a mask, you reduce the chances for viruses to spread. Wearing a mask always improves public health, even if you only do it occasionally.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to wear a mask all the timeโ€ Alright. Would you please wear it sometimes? Sometimes > never. Like just keep one in your bag, and put it on when youโ€™re in an extra crowded place maybe?

    Complaining [SENSITIVE CONTENT]

At the Vietnam Lindy Exchange I wasn't the only one masking. Hell, I wasn't even the only White girl masking. I have pics and videos of myself dancing with other masked hotties.

Yesterday at a social back in NL, I was immediately interrogated about my mask-wearing, by someone who has known me for a year and a half now and definitely should know better.

I got so grumpy that I just left. Super tired anyway, but ya, that meant that I didn't have the energy to deal with the bs.

I just had this go-round again today with one of my coworkers, & I'm afraid I didn't handle it very well. (Granted, there were other factors in play that impaired my restraint. But even so....)

Please, if you havenโ€™t had a booster, get one; if you are ill, stay home; mask up, sick or not. Not only will this help you, but it will help immune compromised people, who may be far more at risk of the disease(s) than your own risks may be. Please. Free boosters are still available, in most cases, in NZ.

I'm going to save a copy locally because this is really scary stuff.

I already avoid the subscription/streaming economy as much as I can. I strive for digital autonomy. I everything I can. I avoid LLMs like the plague. I avoid plastic like the plague. (Yes, I avoid the plague like the plague too. )

I try not to participate in the surveillance economy. All my appliances are smart enough to mind their own business. We've been railroaded into smartphones like everyone else, but we run a privacy-centric OS on older phones. We avoid processed foods. We burn clean energy, even if we can't afford solar yet - our town makes carbon-free electricity available at a fairly steep cost.

And yet, none of this matters if we don't all move together on it.

This feels incredibly important for people to read and understand.

Canadian here so bear with me because I donโ€™t fully understand US gun laws (nor do I understand their attachment TO guns).

What I do know is whenever thereโ€™s a mass shooting someone will bring up stricter gun control and the Right wing gun lovers shout โ€œmy freedom! You canโ€™t take away my right to protect myself!โ€

Yet we are seeing a U.S. State attempt to criminalize the wearing of medical masks in all public spaces. Something that is quite literally โ€œpersonal protective toolโ€. Why doesnโ€™t our freedom to protect ourselves from infection as much as their freedom to carry a gun?

I canโ€™t see any scenario where someone else would be harmed by an N95 - the same is NOT true for any gun. Yet one is being criminalized and the other isnโ€™t.

I sincerely hope we start hearing more people speak out against criminalizing medical masks if for no other reason than the violation of freedom and bodily autonomy. You donโ€™t have to care about Covid to understand that some people need to wear masks.

It is a very sad example of the state of the world when a person can walk into a pharmacy or grocery store with a gun - but not wearing a medical respirator DURING A PANDEMIC

                                        Rant:

I take dance classes a few times a week. I always wear a KF94 mask. I know it isnโ€™t perfect, but those are the ones that fit my face best and, at least from my experience so far, they seem to sufficiently protect me against germs from people who are pre- or a-symptomatic. However: I have the rule that if somebody tells me that they are sick, I leave. Today was such a day. I arrived, talked to someone, and a few minutes into the conversation they volunteered that they are sick, so I got dressed and left again.

I know thereโ€™s worse things in the world, but Iโ€™m still annoyed. Especially because of the attitude that I get when I explain this. People tell me that I donโ€™t have to apologise for my behaviour. I meanโ€ฆ I wasnโ€™t planning to. So I just say nothing and leave, but it feels really shitty.

I know that people also censor any photos and videos taken at events. As in: if Iโ€™m in it, they donโ€™t upload them, because I donโ€™t look โ€œgezelligโ€ enough. I donโ€™t mind that pics and vids of me arenโ€™t shared publicly, but the reason pisses me off.

Via @drjudystone another article in Forbes, this time stressing the need to replace the idea of surgical masks as sufficient against airborne viruses.

Respirators, N95 masks etc. are much more effective, and no one needs a clinical trial to prove it.

Why do I still mask in 2026? Because in addition to it's direct damage, even mild COVID infections leave you vulnerable to getting sick for years afterwards. And let's not forget that COVID is cumulative! I'd rather wear a mask than deal with that.

You can care about COVID and still live a full, connected, and beautiful life. The two are not opposites, even if the world seems determined to treat them that way. Caring just means youโ€™ve stayed awake to whatโ€™s happening and let that awareness shape how you move: more intentionally, with more kindness, and with more creativity.

An N95 has an electrostatic charge that grabs particles and holds them. Think about rubbing a balloon on your head and watching your hair stick to it. Thatโ€™s the science working to keep viruses out of your lungs when you breathe, instead of letting them waltz right in.

I was at the ER yesterday, and the people wearing masks were mainly the patients and the lower ranking and/or non-white staff members

Its never been easier to tell at a glance how trustworthy any random human in public is, bc there is no excuse for not wearing one at this point. None of the staff at the ER who treated me poorly wore one, but all of the staff who were kind to me, did. There was very little if any deviation from this pattern. The same attributes that make a medical provider trustworthy also result in them choosing to mask, and vice versa.

The thing about a medical excuse not to wear one is that such a situation doesnt exist. If youre "too sick to wear a mask" youre also infinitely more vulnerable to the infections they would shield you from in the first place. You would be doing things like social distancing or fully avoiding crowded/enclosed spaces bc even minor infections could land you in the hospital. You would be loudly in support of other people masking bc you are the very person those masks protect. There is also no such thing as a medical provider who doesnt need to mask.

If you want other people to know youre a safe person, wear a fkn mask. If you dont, we see you, bc you are wearing your trustworthiness right on your face.

                                                                      [?]WHN ยป 🌐

Reading parenting groups (which I do to get a sense of what people who don't bury themselves in this stuff think) has a very medieval feel right now.

1/3 of posts are about illness, and here are some things people are recommending for flu/covid/rsv (most of them have no idea what they have and no intention of finding out.)

- Onion poultice on feet

- Ivermectin

- Ice in your socks

- For God's sake don't ask any doctor

- Don't take any vaccines

- Essential oils

Don't get me wrong, I think it is incredibly gross to criticize people for using traditional treatments in a society where serious diseases like covid and flu usually get nothing in the way of supportive assistance, and I use herbal remedies. But the sheer number of people who are sick who are absolutely sure that onions on their feet will fix their "cold" seems...weird and archaic.

Also in the same group, many women describing long covid symptoms (exhaustion, brain fog, POTS, etc...) as purely hormonal and wondering why their estrogen isn't working.

Alt...Facebook post from Sharon Astyk: Reading parenting groups (which I do to get a sense of what people who don't bury themselves in this stuff think) has a very medieval feel right now. 1/3 of posts are about illness, and here are some things people are recommending for flu/covid/rsv (most of them have no idea what they have and no intention of finding out.) - Onion poultice on feet - Ivermectin - Ice in your socks - For God's sake don't ask any doctor - Don't take any vaccines - Essential oils Don't get me wrong, I think it is incredibly gross to criticize people for using traditional treatments in a society where serious diseases like covid and flu usually get nothing in the way of supportive assistance, and I use herbal remedies. Took out 2 walls, moved the bathroom, redid the kitchen. We continued to live in the house, cooking on a hot plate and microwave upstairs.

I got a major respiratory infection. I suspect from all the mouse poo, dead roaches, and who knows what else, release into the air when the walls were opened. Sick for 6 weeks, cracked a rib from coughing. For the 7 years after that, I reliably caught a terrible hacking cough every fall, and sometimes again in the spring. Got an inhaler to help breathe.

Weโ€™re now 6 years into the pandemic, and my old friend the fall cough hasnโ€™t returned.

I do believe that consistently masking in indoor public spaces has kept me from catching every little virus floating around. I havenโ€™t avoided getting sick entirely โ€” Iโ€™ve had Covid twice. But friends/family are sick more.

While thereโ€™s community benefit from not spreading disease, the personal benefit has also been huge.

Workwise, I regularly end up with re-scheduled meetings directly or indirectly attributable to COVID. Generally speaking people ghost at a noticeably higher rate. A bunch of people who've ghosted have reappeared and apologized, sharing that they had COVID, or their spouse had COVID and they had to take care of the kids, or their kids had COVID (1) and they had to bring them to the hospital. And on and on and on. Everything feels slower and more challenging.

Current public health policy in the US with respect to COVID appears to be specially designed (2) to generate this outcome. We're selectively breeding a dangerous pathogen to overcome the human immune system. Until that policy changes this is how life will be. All indications are that the next pandemic--whether that's monkeypox, bird flu, or something we don't know of yet--will follow a similar trajectory. Meanwhile, after a few COVID infections people accumulate a 25% or higher risk of developing Long COVID, the symptoms of which persist for at least two years in the vast majority of people. The slowdowns and challenges will worsen as the percentage of people struggling with Long COVID increases.

If I'm experiencing slowdowns and preventable challenges in the more mundane aspects of my work and private life, I have to assume most other people are as well. The shared costs, burdens, and risks are enormous, dwarfing whatever outlay would be necessary to improve the public health response and ease all this.

The above is not even considering the direct impacts on health, losses of loved ones, and so on, which of course have been incalculable.

                                                                                                                                                  (1) For the record, there's no such thing as a "weird summer flu"--that's likely COVID or one of the other respiratory diseases like RSV that are in much wider circulation as a direct result of COVID. It may also be Lyme disease. No matter what, brushing off a "weird summer flu" is not a great idea

                                                                                                                                                  (2) I'm not informed enough to know why public health policy ended up where it did, and I'm not attributing malice to anyone. Rather, I'm noting that if one were to try designing a selective breeding program for COVID using American citizens as hosts, with the aim of maximizing COVID's ability to escape human immunity, you'd end up doing something roughly like what's happening now. If that isn't the desired outcome, then what the heck?
