I noticed around twenty years ago that insects in Europe were in serious decline. It didn’t even need a ‘scientific study’ and I use the same methodology today.
In the 1980s, in summer, when I drove in Europe, the windscreen of my car was covered in dead insects after only 100km of driving.
By the early 2000s this was no longer true. Many fewer bug-splats on the glass.
Now? Hardly any at all.
You cannot blame Climate Change for this. This is down to excessive pesticides and farming techniques.
Now studies show bird populations in serious decline. Ever wonder what they used to eat?
We learnt nothing from the DDT fiasco, apparently.

We've taken cars to France for about 40 years and always taken spare bulbs because the gendarmerie insist you have them and the tools to change them if necessary. Now though we've a more modern car with LED lights. They appear to be unit construction, no 'bulbs' just strips of LEDs. Does anyone know if french motoring law has changed to reflect this? Or what am I supposed to carry these days?

Had dentist appointment a couple of weeks ago, this involved #driving to other side of town in late afternoon around school finishing time.
Encountered *two* school crossing patrols, which now include
* lollipop lady, same as back in the day but now with full hi vis and *bodycam*
* 2-3 men of large build wearing hi vis vests, guarding school exits, literal "multicultural Dads Army"
* at one school (with very busy junction and sharp turns), #PCSO with #bodycam and Airwave radio (a type of #government #officer with some policing powers but not full constable - similar to "handhaving" in NL)
its good they are all keeping the #children safe, but it seemed like a *lot* of boots on the ground required to do this in 21st century

Canadian consumers: we want EVs!
Government of Canada: Hello, we're from 2005. Let's do Fuel Efficiency!

of course... it's actually much worse than just policy dredged up from the days of Paul Martin and Stephen Harper… it's a gigantic step backward at the behest of fossil fuel interests in order to keep people burning fossil fuels.
EV mandates should be 'sold’ as an affordability measure! Because they are!
No, I don't mean grants, I mean everyday use. Real impacts on your pocket book. How much money would you save if you *never* went to a gas station. Just think about that for second.
Then we can do the math.
My 2019 Hyundai Kona Election just passed 251152km (palindrome!) yesterday and gets around 6km/kWh on average.
I pay about $0.13/kWh at home to charge so that's $0.02/km.
Our 2012 Toyota Prius C is at 270,000km and gets about 5.5L/100km or 0.055L/km. At (a discounted) $1.25/L that’s $0.04/km.
Per kilometre the EV is half the cost to 'fuel' than one of the most fuel efficient gas cars out there.
In general, why would *anyone* choose something that costs double to run!?
And yet, the government doesn't sell this as ‘affordability’ it sells it as 'environmental responsibility'.
Let's be honest, they do that because they *know* the environmental message is *less* motivating than money.
Now I said at the beginning, "imagine" never going to the gas station. Obviously that doesn't mean you're fueling for free... but there is another overlooked aspect to this.
Fueling your car is a day to day thing. It's one of the biggest pulls on people's bank accounts precisely because it is such a frequent cost.
Now imagine if that 'bill' was just rolled into your home electricity bill. Which you could do other things to reduce cost overall?
EVs are not just an environmental game changer, they are a financial one for the average person.
That is why oil companies are throwing absolutely everything they have at government (and also fomenting fascism) to keep their good times going, at our expense.

I'm sure drivers are looking at this and thinking that this looks fun.
A #driver from #Essex went on a rampage on Christmas Day in centre of #London, deliberately targeting ethnic #minority and #LGBT+ folk, knocking down one man causing #fatal #injuries and causing life changing injuries to several others.
He was also #drunk and possibly under the influence of #drugs at the time, with history of #vehicle related crime, and had never even had a valid #driving #licence in his entire life!
His sentence was *37* years minimum (he will not leave prison until late middle age) and lifetime ban from driving (this kind of ban is *extremely* rare in #England and Wales)
I'm starkly reminded of how #ElonMusk and the #TSLA fanatics all seem to be extremely certain that the future of #driving is to be...not driving at all, actually, but merely to be sitting in the automated equivalent of a taxicab or a chauffeured limo, continuing to do all the things they'd normally be doing at home or on a laptop at a café or anywhere else while their vehicle "agentically" took them from point A to B.
I'm not into cars or driving myself but nevertheless I find this attitude to be very strange. I was under the impression that human beings liked to feel as though they were in control of their car—like the car was in a sense *sharing* the task of driving, giving the driver a balanced sense of feeling in touch with the road and their surroundings while the car's mechanisms acted like force multipliers, allowing the human driver a paradoxical sense of both having control over the drive and being guided and protected by their car.

Your response proves my point. Linux has documentation whether you like the quality of it or not.
From your post, someone who has no insight in the matter, would conclude that there is no documentation at all in Linux, which is illogical
If you had stated that BSD has excellent documentation I would not have reacted, because that is a factual and logical statement.

Can you clarify? All Linux flavors I've worked on have man page structures thus Documentation.
Even when I compiled the kernel from scratch in the pre alpha days, the source code had comments including all GNU Richard Stallman sources

Truck drivers in Australia are absolutely scary the way they drive. They speed, tailgate, intimidate, cut up and ignore traffic signs. The first day I drove in Australia, I vividly remember pulling on to the West Gate Freeway in Melbourne's west, drawing into a middle lane and reaching the speed limit of 100km, when two massive trucks passed on either side of me as if I was dawdling.
(I'm in no way saying the truck driver in the article is at fault, I'm just venting).
EVs are surprisingly powerful. This is not an endorsement to drive badly, but here's a relevant anecdote.
Yesterday, I was moving along our local freeway just above the posted 110kph limit when I started to get boxed in by some silly drivers doing silly things and acting erractically.
In order to avoid any possibility of a bad situation, I moved into the passing lane and accelerated quickly to go around someone and separate myself from the crowd.
I stepped on the “gas” and easily went around the person in a few seconds… then I looked down and realized I was doing 150kph.
Whoa horsey!🐎
I pulled back into the travelling lane and slowed down to 115kph.
That kind of acceleration, especially at that already high cruising speed, just wasn’t possible in any other car I've ever owned.
EVs are great, but they are still vehicles that can reach dangerously high speeds.
Here's another anecdote: Last week my daughter was very nearly run over by a truck as she was walking in a crosswalk. She was halfway across the street when an (oversized) pickup truck turned left across her, completely on a red light. She is relatively small in stature, her head would have barely been above the hood of the truck.
She saw it at the last second and jumped back... the truck missed by inches. Another car at the intersection honked at the truck. It stopped in the crosswalk, the driver gave HER a dirty look, and zoomed off. The car driver who honked leaned out the window and kindly asked if she was ok. She was.
Driving is the most dangerous thing we do on a daily basis.. for ourselves, and everyone around us. Take care out there friends.
