" genetic material was frequently detected in air during community outbreaks, even in well-ventilated settings, according to a new study published in Respiratory Medicine."

In healthcare settings, it should be universal for providers and patients to (specifically, an N95 respirator or equivalent).

Canadian here so bear with me because I don’t fully understand US gun laws (nor do I understand their attachment TO guns).

What I do know is whenever there’s a mass shooting someone will bring up stricter gun control and the Right wing gun lovers shout “my freedom! You can’t take away my right to protect myself!”

Yet we are seeing a U.S. State attempt to criminalize the wearing of medical masks in all public spaces. Something that is quite literally “personal protective tool”. Why doesn’t our freedom to protect ourselves from infection as much as their freedom to carry a gun?

I can’t see any scenario where someone else would be harmed by an N95 - the same is NOT true for any gun. Yet one is being criminalized and the other isn’t.

I sincerely hope we start hearing more people speak out against criminalizing medical masks if for no other reason than the violation of freedom and bodily autonomy. You don’t have to care about Covid to understand that some people need to wear masks.

It is a very sad example of the state of the world when a person can walk into a pharmacy or grocery store with a gun - but not wearing a medical respirator DURING A PANDEMIC

The evidence is all pointing towards something many of us have been saying since "urgency of normal" tricked people into dropping Covid protections: Billionaires think there's "too many people on the planet". And they are doing something about it.

Wear a mask at these Events folks.

You protect you and others when you do. You encourage other folks to consider protecting themselves as well.

Otherwise at some point down the line you'll be where I am. Desperately trying to preserve my energy and feeling very sad, angry and worried about the folks attending.

I was at today. Absolutely packed, even though it was late morning on an ordinary Tuesday. I will be happy when they build the second one we're supposed to be getting.

And out of the hundreds and hundreds of customers, and dozens and dozens of staff I saw, I spotted ... zero people wearing masks of any sort. I was the only one.

Lots of people coughing and sneezing and moaning about being sick, with a brutal flu going round, *and* another mystery virus, along with COVID of course.

FFS. It was the same the other day at my doctor's office. No one wearing a mask.

I think humanity - at least the North American varieties - is waving a big "Hey, viruses, we give up" sign.

Did you know that science has progressed to the point that you can get your blood checked for antibodies against COVID19 and if those antibodies are coming from vaccination or infection? I do this check once a year. And the results are in. Still vaccination only. My regimen of and avoiding risky situations seems to work. Next year I'll order the test again. In Germany it costs around €50-75, depending on the lab. Ask your doctor to get it done. That's how I did it.

                    Just realized:

I was at the ER yesterday, and the people wearing masks were mainly the patients and the lower ranking and/or non-white staff members

Its never been easier to tell at a glance how trustworthy any random human in public is, bc there is no excuse for not wearing one at this point. None of the staff at the ER who treated me poorly wore one, but all of the staff who were kind to me, did. There was very little if any deviation from this pattern. The same attributes that make a medical provider trustworthy also result in them choosing to mask, and vice versa.

The thing about a medical excuse not to wear one is that such a situation doesnt exist. If youre "too sick to wear a mask" youre also infinitely more vulnerable to the infections they would shield you from in the first place. You would be doing things like social distancing or fully avoiding crowded/enclosed spaces bc even minor infections could land you in the hospital. You would be loudly in support of other people masking bc you are the very person those masks protect. There is also no such thing as a medical provider who doesnt need to mask.

If you want other people to know youre a safe person, wear a fkn mask. If you dont, we see you, bc you are wearing your trustworthiness right on your face.

                      Nova Scotia Health

NS health (re)mandated mask wearing in all public health facilities on December 18, 2025.

Currently there are outbreaks of COVID, Influenza A and Influenza B in my local hospital (Kentville), in wards on the same floor as the radiology department.

I had to visit the hospital today for an X-ray and was shocked to see the number of staff who were ignoring this mandate. Of course many patients were, too, but whose example would they follow? One person I spoke to didn't even realize it was a requirement (she was masked herself). She hadn't read the signs, or thought they were left over from the past.

One of the technicians hastily and sloppily masked when he came into the room and pulled it off while walking out.

As I was finishing with the X-ray and putting on my outdoor things. I mentioned my shock to the other (masked) technician. I told her that this lack of compliance is a clear message to the vulnerable and all patients that those staff members don't care. They don't care about us, their patients. And they don't even care about themselves.

So disappointing. But what's to be done? You can't make people care.

I feel like the parts of the world I regularly interact with are running at 75% of pre-COVID levels at best, in large part because people keep getting sick with this disease. Workwise, I regularly end up with re-scheduled meetings directly or indirectly attributable to COVID. Generally speaking people ghost at a noticeably higher rate. A bunch of people who've ghosted have reappeared and apologized, sharing that they had COVID, or their spouse had COVID and they had to take care of the kids, or their kids had COVID (1) and they had to bring them to the hospital. And on and on and on. Everything feels slower and more challenging.

Current public health policy in the US with respect to COVID appears to be specially designed (2) to generate this outcome. We're selectively breeding a dangerous pathogen to overcome the human immune system. Until that policy changes this is how life will be. All indications are that the next pandemic--whether that's monkeypox, bird flu, or something we don't know of yet--will follow a similar trajectory. Meanwhile, after a few COVID infections people accumulate a 25% or higher risk of developing Long COVID, the symptoms of which persist for at least two years in the vast majority of people. The slowdowns and challenges will worsen as the percentage of people struggling with Long COVID increases.

If I'm experiencing slowdowns and preventable challenges in the more mundane aspects of my work and private life, I have to assume most other people are as well. The shared costs, burdens, and risks are enormous, dwarfing whatever outlay would be necessary to improve the public health response and ease all this.

The above is not even considering the direct impacts on health, losses of loved ones, and so on, which of course have been incalculable.

                                                  (1) For the record, there's no such thing as a "weird summer flu"--that's likely COVID or one of the other respiratory diseases like RSV that are in much wider circulation as a direct result of COVID. It may also be Lyme disease. No matter what, brushing off a "weird summer flu" is not a great idea

                                                  (2) I'm not informed enough to know why public health policy ended up where it did, and I'm not attributing malice to anyone. Rather, I'm noting that if one were to try designing a selective breeding program for COVID using American citizens as hosts, with the aim of maximizing COVID's ability to escape human immunity, you'd end up doing something roughly like what's happening now. If that isn't the desired outcome, then what the heck?

This level of death in the US amounts to one plane crash that kills all passengers aboard every single day. How many people would be flying in airplanes if this were our reality? What do you suppose would be the public response if a plane fell out of the sky every day across the country?

I think it’s important that we continue to talk about it. We understand you don’t want to hear about it. I don’t want to talk about it. But we need to because there’s more we can do. We cannot prevent all infections. We cannot prevent all deaths. But there’s a hell of a lot more that we can do to really keep people safe and save them from losing a loved one.

Ironically, the ones saying "Take off your mask - let's see your smile" and asking "How long are you going to live in fear?" seem to be the ones who fear being reminded of a Pandemic they'd rather forget.

We live in mad times.
