“The data centres at the heart of the ai craze are built around graphics processing units ( s), the chips which power . But they also need cpus.

, the leading maker of gpus, uses Arm designs for its cpus, as do giants such as and . Mr Haas argues that this is only the beginning.

As workloads shift from to , where models respond to user queries, demand for efficient, general-purpose processors should rise. Much of that work, ’s boss expects, will spread beyond into , and , again favouring s.”

"In September 2025, Nvidia and OpenAI announced a letter of intent for Nvidia to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI’s AI infrastructure. At the time, the companies said they expected to finalize details 'in the coming weeks.' Five months later, no deal has closed, Nvidia’s CEO now says the $100 billion figure was 'never a commitment,' and Reuters reports that OpenAI has been quietly seeking alternatives to Nvidia chips since last year."

I recorded a few US economic indicators when Trump was elected and FWIW here they are with current numbers. Draw what conclusions you wish.

          2025 2026
          Unemp. 4.1% 4.3%
          Inflat. 2.4% 2.7%
          GDP $29.35T $31.1 T
          Dow 41800 50067
          Bal. of
          Trade -$84.4B -$56.8B

I think I've got them right. I'm no economist but I suspect the Dow and GDP are about jobless growth attributable to 5 or 6 tech cos. (Hi there, )

My #maplelinux (canadian) distro broke this morning. #nvidia wasn't loading anymore.

Honestly, that's something that I expected from the very beginning.

I tried removing it and go back to nouveau, the open source driver. But it wouldn't work.

I got tired of fighting with it, so I installed a new OS instead: #pikaOS

It's a #debian based #linux distro. They have some ISO with nvidia included. Thank God.

Here's an update to my of my latest Linux Mint install.

Today I discovered that I did not have the correct NVidia GPU drivers setup to run a local Stable Diffusion model. (Don't ask me about SD, I just have a new-to-me old GPU begging for interesting code to try.)

I resolved my driver issue with the following steps:

+ I pressed the Windows key on my keyboard.
+ I typed in the word 'drivers' and the clicked on the one suggested menu item that matched my search.
+ A setting panel appeared and informed me that I had four driver options for my NVidia graphics card.
+ Of the four options, one had the word "recommended" beside it. It was the selected one.
+ So I clicked on the "recommended" one.
                                      + I closed the window.
+ A new window informed me that I would need to reboot to apply the the change.
+ I rebooted, and found that Stable Diffusion can now see my GPU.

                                          Got this in email.

"The second-gen transformer model for DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution uses 5x more compute and an expanded training data set for greater context awareness of every scene and more intelligent use of pixel sampling and motion vectors."

Yep. We're gonna need more Nvidia cards to drive our games with "greater context awareness of every scene," which is frightening to future me.

I'd link to the article, but it leads with an AI-generated summary, which means it's mostly that bullshit I referenced above, but you get the picture, lol.

                                          Also useful for movie production.

But Blackwell generation (possibly later generation, too) of architecture is known to have issues that (AFAIK) is still working on fixing. At least, you'll additionally need

Supplies will apparently be constrained into late 2026 so prices will rise by at least 30% for base components. Probably much higher for retail pricing 😕

Nvidia has allegedly overbooked AI production so other product SKUs will be constrained/delayed or cancelled.

In March 2025, when the administration solicited public input on its forthcoming AI strategy, no major tech company dared to suggest that China gain access to leading American AI hardware. Political consensus was such that national security concerns took unimpeachable priority over selling key technology to rivals. The terrain on which that consensus rested is now breaking down.

Two recent developments are driving the shift. First, American tech business elites, having reached the profitability limits of hardware controls, are looking outside US borders. And within China, the Biden-era GPU restrictions are at least as likely to have spurred Chinese innovation as to have contained it.

If the US once sought to safeguard its comparative advantage of deep learning GPUs, it is now exploiting that advantage to facilitate grander imperial ambitions. The Trump administration’s reconfigured priority is to export the “American AI technology stack”—chips, data storage, foundation models—around the world. To navigate national antagonisms on the bleeding edge of technology, the US is reproducing what John A. Hobson, writing at the turn of the 20th century, saw in the conquests of old empire: a “political policy and practice,” brokered by the “industrial and financial chiefs,” to relieve “the pressure of capital for external fields of investment.”"

It is unquestionably a solid server OS. As a desktop OS, it works quite well. It definitely does not feel like "Linux from 2004." The major desktop environments like are all supported and releases drivers for the OS too. Modern hardware is supported. For *cutting edge hardware*, may be the better bet here. It's a little slower to adopt cutting edge gear because it is focused on stability and elegant solutions, not trend-chasing.

In fact, I’m not even saying it goes tits up. Hell, it might even have another good quarter or two. It really comes down to how long people are willing to be stupid and how long Jensen Huang is able to call hyperscalers at three in the morning and say “buy one billion dollars of GPUs, pig.”

No, really! I think much of the US stock market’s growth is held up by how long everybody is willing to be gaslit by Jensen Huang into believing that they need more GPUs. At this point it’s barely about AI anymore, as AI revenue — real, actual cash made from selling services run on GPUs — doesn’t even cover its own costs, let alone create the cash flow necessary to buy $70,000 GPUs thousands at a time. It’s not like any actual innovation or progress is driving this bullshit!

In any case, the markets crave a healthy NVIDIA, as so many hundreds of billions of dollars of NVIDIA stock sit in the hands of retail investors and people’s 401ks, and its endless growth has helped paper over the pallid growth of the US stock market and, by extension, the decay of the tech industry’s ability to innovate.

Once this pops — and it will pop, because there is simply not enough money to do this forever — there must be a referendum on those that chose to ignore the naked instability of this era, and the endless lies that inflated the AI bubble."

I have been using TAA for years in NMS and am quite familiar with DLSS, having read about it over the years. But, today I discovered DLAA (Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing) and that NMS supports it.

                                                                                                                                                              And it's just awesome!

Unlike DLSS, which uses AI to upscale a lower-resolution image for better performance, DLAA renders the game at full resolution and uses AI to create smoother, sharper, and more stable visuals with fewer jagged edges and artifacts, such as shimmering. It is ideal for players with a powerful GPU who have extra performance headroom and want the best possible image quality”

CoreWeave is a data center company that pivoted in 2022 from crypto. (In 2021, CoreWeave made its money by… mining Ethereum.) Essentially, CoreWeave is a landlord for compute: companies pay for the use of its server racks for AI projects.

CoreWeave isn’t alone in its complex finances. Meta took on debt, using a SPV, for its own data centers. Unlike CoreWeave’s SPVs, the Meta SPV stays off its balance sheet. Elon Musk’s xAI is reportedly pursuing its own SPV deal.

It is perhaps time to discuss the enormous stock sales from CoreWeave’s management team. Before the company even went public, its founders sold almost half a billion dollars in shares. Then, insiders sold over $1 billion more immediately after the IPO lockup ended.
