“The data centres at the heart of the ai craze are built around graphics processing units (#GPU s), the chips which power #AIModels. But they also need cpus.
#Nvidia, the leading maker of gpus, uses Arm designs for its cpus, as do #cloud giants such as #Amazon and #Google. Mr Haas argues that this is only the beginning.
As #AI workloads shift from #training to #inference, where models respond to user queries, demand for efficient, general-purpose processors should rise. Much of that work, #Arm’s boss expects, will spread beyond #DataCentres into #phones, #wearables and #cars, again favouring #CPU s.”

"In September 2025, Nvidia and OpenAI announced a letter of intent for Nvidia to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI’s AI infrastructure. At the time, the companies said they expected to finalize details 'in the coming weeks.' Five months later, no deal has closed, Nvidia’s CEO now says the $100 billion figure was 'never a commitment,' and Reuters reports that OpenAI has been quietly seeking alternatives to Nvidia chips since last year."

I recorded a few US economic indicators when Trump was elected and FWIW here they are with current numbers. Draw what conclusions you wish.
2025 2026
Unemp. 4.1% 4.3%
Inflat. 2.4% 2.7%
GDP $29.35T $31.1 T
Dow 41800 50067
Bal. of
Trade -$84.4B -$56.8B
I think I've got them right. I'm no economist but I suspect the Dow and GDP are about jobless growth attributable to 5 or 6 tech cos. (Hi there, #Nvidia)
My #maplelinux (canadian) distro broke this morning. #nvidia wasn't loading anymore.
Honestly, that's something that I expected from the very beginning.
I tried removing it and go back to nouveau, the open source driver. But it wouldn't work.
I got tired of fighting with it, so I installed a new OS instead: #pikaOS
It's a #debian based #linux distro. They have some ISO with nvidia included. Thank God.

This might not make sense to a lot of people, but I think CUDA, an esoteric software library for math nerds, is basically responsible for the biggest market distortion in Capitalism since Merino Sheep.
Call for testing for a script that installs #KDE #PLASMA on a #FreeBSD desktop or laptop. Testing is aimed at users who already know FreeBSD, for example who can configure /etc/rc.conf and /boot/loader.conf.
I’m especially interested in feedback from people with NVIDIA GPUs, since I don’t have this hardware myself.

Here's an update to my #microblog of my latest Linux Mint install.
Today I discovered that I did not have the correct NVidia GPU drivers setup to run a local Stable Diffusion model. (Don't ask me about SD, I just have a new-to-me old GPU begging for interesting code to try.)
I resolved my driver issue with the following steps:
+ I pressed the Windows key on my keyboard.
+ I typed in the word 'drivers' and the clicked on the one suggested menu item that matched my search.
+ A setting panel appeared and informed me that I had four driver options for my NVidia graphics card.
+ Of the four options, one had the word "recommended" beside it. It was the selected one.
+ So I clicked on the "recommended" one.
+ I closed the window.
+ A new window informed me that I would need to reboot to apply the the change.
+ I rebooted, and found that Stable Diffusion can now see my GPU.
Gosh! Whatever shall become of poor Nvidia once the AI bubble of bullshit bursts? How will they ever survive??
Got this in email.
"The second-gen transformer model for DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution uses 5x more compute and an expanded training data set for greater context awareness of every scene and more intelligent use of pixel sampling and motion vectors."
Yep. We're gonna need more Nvidia cards to drive our games with "greater context awareness of every scene," which is frightening to future me.
I'd link to the article, but it leads with an AI-generated summary, which means it's mostly that bullshit I referenced above, but you get the picture, lol.
Also useful for movie production.
@clf
RTX 5070 is supported by 580 series and above (in #FreeBSD ports, x11/nvidia-kmod{-devel}, x11/nvidia-driver{-devel} and optionally graphics/nvidia-drm-{510|515|61|66|latest}-kmod depending on the version of your base FreeBSD version).
But Blackwell generation (possibly later generation, too) of architecture is known to have issues that (AFAIK) #nvidia is still working on fixing. At least, you'll additionally need
hw.nvidia.registry.EnableGpuFirmware=1
in your /boot/loader.conf to enable GSP.
If you need to enable iGPU, too, you'll need graphics/nvidia-drm-{510|515|61|66|latest}-kmod, too.
If you have any plans to upgrade your GPU to something in the Nvidia 5000 series, then do this sooner rather than later.
Supplies will apparently be constrained into late 2026 so prices will rise by at least 30% for base components. Probably much higher for retail pricing 😕
Nvidia has allegedly overbooked AI production so other product SKUs will be constrained/delayed or cancelled.

#nvidia New Feature Branch (NFB) of #GPU #driver 590.48.01 now landed onto #FreeBSD #ports latest (aka main) branch at commit b4e7c457571f6241f3a4cf4cbff0db5160f03eeb.
For users of GPUs older than Turing generation of architectures that are using -devel variant, this new version drops support for your old GPUs. See UPDATING entry dated 20260103.
And fix for change in default on main (aka 16-Current) branch of base OS also landed following the above as commit 1587486a39ecf579cc59f878a75faef823441e2b.
As new quarterly 2026Q1 is not yet branched when these land, 2026Q1 should have both from the beginning.

Note that this version drops support for a bunch of old GPUs before Turing generation of architecture. Anyone who are using -devel variant of ports/pkgs and having dropped GPUs need to switch to master ports now at 580.119.02.
New legacy branch -580 would be created at the time Production Branch of 590 (or later) series appears and lands to ports tree, but not this time.
@jti42 @pkal @ghul cuz I think that in the legal battle game #FLOSS vs. #Corporations that #OpenSource would be on the loosing end.

"The abrupt change in export-controls policy hints at a shift in the administration’s theory of China competition. In March 2025, when the administration solicited public input on its forthcoming AI strategy, no major tech company dared to suggest that China gain access to leading American AI hardware. Political consensus was such that national security concerns took unimpeachable priority over selling key technology to rivals. The terrain on which that consensus rested is now breaking down.
Two recent developments are driving the shift. First, American tech business elites, having reached the profitability limits of hardware controls, are looking outside US borders. And within China, the Biden-era GPU restrictions are at least as likely to have spurred Chinese innovation as to have contained it.
If the US once sought to safeguard its comparative advantage of deep learning GPUs, it is now exploiting that advantage to facilitate grander imperial ambitions. The Trump administration’s reconfigured priority is to export the “American AI technology stack”—chips, data storage, foundation models—around the world. To navigate national antagonisms on the bleeding edge of technology, the US is reproducing what John A. Hobson, writing at the turn of the 20th century, saw in the conquests of old empire: a “political policy and practice,” brokered by the “industrial and financial chiefs,” to relieve “the pressure of capital for external fields of investment.”"

Is the NVIDIA Quadro M1000M graphics in the ThinkPad P50 laptop useful at all with Linux?
Laptop has a pretty powerful i7 processor, but not officially supported by Windows 11 and the NVIDIA Quadro M1000M graphics has also been discontinued from support by nVidia (not sure what that means).
... so will it work okay with Linux ?
Only one way to find out, but thought I'd throw the question out here.

I see a lot of blank, outright rejection of #AI, LLMs general or coding LLMs like #ClaudeCode in special here on the Fediverse.
Often, the actual impact of the AI / #LLM in use is not even understood by those criticizing it, at times leading to tantrums about AI where there is....no AI involved.
The technology (LLM et al) in itself is not likely to go away for a few more years. The smaller #ML variations that aren't being yapped about as much are going to remain here as they have been for the past decades.
I assume that what will indeed happen is a move from centralized cloud models to on-prem hardware as the hardware becomes more powerful and the models more efficient. Think migration from the large mainframes to the desktop PCs. We're seeing a start of this with devices such as the ASUS Ascent #GX10 / #Nvidia #GB10.
Imagine having the power of #Claude under your desk, powered for free by #solar cells on your roof with some nice solar powered AC to go with it.
Would it not be wise to accept the reality of the existence of this technology and find out how this can be used in a good way that would improve lives? And how smart, small regulation can be built and enforced that balances innovation and risks to get closer to #startrek(tm)?
Low-key reminds me of the Maschinenstürmer of past times...

The BSDs are *awesome* operating systems. #FreeBSD is a high performance general purpose OS. It is modern #Unix. #NetBSD is for portability, it supports nearly every CPU architecture under the sun. #OpenBSD is security-focused. #DragonflyBSD is a FreeBSD fork focused on the desktop.
Most of my experience is with FreeBSD, which I will enthusiastically share. It is unquestionably a solid server OS. As a desktop OS, it works quite well. It definitely does not feel like "Linux from 2004." The major desktop environments like #KDE #GNOME #XFCE are all supported and #nvidia releases drivers for the OS too. Modern hardware is supported. For *cutting edge hardware*, #Linux may be the better bet here. It's a little slower to adopt cutting edge gear because it is focused on stability and elegant solutions, not trend-chasing.
FreeBSD is an excellent OS to learn. It runs beautifully and it's more coherent and better designed. Documentation is *solid*.
"I worry about NVIDIA, not because I believe there’s a massive scandal, but because so much rides on its success, and its success rides on the back of dwindling amounts of venture capital and debt, because nobody is actually making money to pay for these GPUs.
In fact, I’m not even saying it goes tits up. Hell, it might even have another good quarter or two. It really comes down to how long people are willing to be stupid and how long Jensen Huang is able to call hyperscalers at three in the morning and say “buy one billion dollars of GPUs, pig.”
No, really! I think much of the US stock market’s growth is held up by how long everybody is willing to be gaslit by Jensen Huang into believing that they need more GPUs. At this point it’s barely about AI anymore, as AI revenue — real, actual cash made from selling services run on GPUs — doesn’t even cover its own costs, let alone create the cash flow necessary to buy $70,000 GPUs thousands at a time. It’s not like any actual innovation or progress is driving this bullshit!
In any case, the markets crave a healthy NVIDIA, as so many hundreds of billions of dollars of NVIDIA stock sit in the hands of retail investors and people’s 401ks, and its endless growth has helped paper over the pallid growth of the US stock market and, by extension, the decay of the tech industry’s ability to innovate.
Once this pops — and it will pop, because there is simply not enough money to do this forever — there must be a referendum on those that chose to ignore the naked instability of this era, and the endless lies that inflated the AI bubble."

"#Nvidia Blackwell is nothing short of a doomsday device
Huang said that in the future, he expects to see millions of these kinds of AI processors in use at data centers around the world.
One million Blackwell GPUs would suck down an astonishing 1.875 gigawatts of power. For context, a typical nuclear power plant only produces 1 gigawatt of power."
the stock market in 2025 officially prefers companies with no revenue to companies that actually have revenue.

Despite very solid mounting with the 3 slot backplane and screw assembly, I have added a sag support for the new GPU. The bundled one was too short for the case, as is this longer one I ordered, so I have improvised.

#nvidia dropped a bunch of old GPUs support in new Beta Branch of driver 590.44.01.
It wouldn't hit #FreeBSD #ports tree as it's Beta, but I've posted HEADSUP for future upgrades at freebsd-ports ML.

I spent several hours today researching and comparing and testing different anti-aliasing modes in No Man's Sky with this new RTX 5080 GPU.
I have been using TAA for years in NMS and am quite familiar with DLSS, having read about it over the years. But, today I discovered DLAA (Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing) and that NMS supports it.
And it's just awesome!
“NVIDIA DLAA (Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing) is an AI-based anti-aliasing technology for NVIDIA RTX GPUs that improves image quality at a game's native resolution, prioritizing visual fidelity over performance. Unlike DLSS, which uses AI to upscale a lower-resolution image for better performance, DLAA renders the game at full resolution and uses AI to create smoother, sharper, and more stable visuals with fewer jagged edges and artifacts, such as shimmering. It is ideal for players with a powerful GPU who have extra performance headroom and want the best possible image quality”

I updated a KDE based installation of mine in MX-Linux, a couple of days ago, it's updated rather often. For some reason the update sequence didn't want to update Nvidia firmware which I never ever use. The fix was to manually remove the Nvidia firmware, apt remove, and then let the update continue
Even though I never use their hardware Nvidia still tries to be problematic in Linux
NVIDIA has released a critical DGX Spark firmware update addressing 14 vulnerabilities - including CVE-2025-33187 (CVSS 9.3), which enables malicious code execution and access to protected SoC regions.
Firmware flaws in AI workstations can impact model integrity, training data, and system stability.
Organizations using DGX Spark should patch immediately.

Let’s start with some very recent history. CoreWeave is a data center company that pivoted in 2022 from crypto. (In 2021, CoreWeave made its money by… mining Ethereum.) Essentially, CoreWeave is a landlord for compute: companies pay for the use of its server racks for AI projects....
CoreWeave chief executive officer Michael Intrator, a former hedge fund manager,...
“They have to continue to borrow to pay interest on the last loan.”So,
Yeah. Looks like crypto, and crypto's Ponzi scheme way of thinking, has slimed its way into the "real" economy after all.
Oh and welcome back, global financial crash. We missed you. And eyyy, how you doing Enron long time no see:
CoreWeave isn’t alone in its complex finances. Meta took on debt, using a SPV, for its own data centers. Unlike CoreWeave’s SPVs, the Meta SPV stays off its balance sheet. Elon Musk’s xAI is reportedly pursuing its own SPV deal."Complex finances" are what companies engage in when there isn't any there there (SPVs were Enron's "financial innovation" too).
Peter Thiel pulling his investments out of NVIDIA makes far more sense after reading this. Looks wobbly.
It is perhaps time to discuss the enormous stock sales from CoreWeave’s management team. Before the company even went public, its founders sold almost half a billion dollars in shares. Then, insiders sold over $1 billion more immediately after the IPO lockup ended....
“It’s noteworthy that people who have a good view on that business are cashing out,” says Leevi Saari, a fellow at the AI Now Institute.and of course
It makes a certain kind of cynical sense to view CoreWeave itself as, effectively, a special purpose vehicle for Nvidia.#AI #GenAI #GenerativeAI #AIBubble #CoreWeave #CoreScientific #Microsoft #NVIDIA #crypto #grift #CasinoEconomy
