Michael Larabel cherry-picks a recent update from Alfonso Siciliano @alfonsosiciliano for the FreeBSD Foundation:
"During the month of June, I was primarily focused on BSDCan.
During my talk at the conference, I presented a solution for automatically detecting the appropriate NVIDIA GPU driver, allowing the installer to automatically detect the hardware, install the correct driver, and configure the system.
However, the licensing issue has not yet been clarified, so this solution will not be integrated into bsdinstall in the short term. Instead, users with NVIDIA GPUs will be prompted through a menu to select which version of the NVIDIA device driver they want to install."

my server had been down for like 5 days now. Now im stuck on this stupid place and don't even have acces to my nas. Then I found out I spend the last day and a half copying the wrong drive with ddrescue. Im soo done with this shit. I have decade old hard drives but ask a ssd to do more then 3 years hell no. I want a server that could run forever if electricity is provided. Ssds make it impossible. 3 months of 15 vms that probably didn't even do 500gb per day in total killed a drive that supposed to have a rw capacity of 2400 tb. Also I hate bluesky with its stupid twitter like post limit of 500. My mastodon had a limit of 65536. You could write a small book with that. And now that I have to copy shit with ddrescue again but instead of getting the same or better performance since its a ssd copying to a USB harddrive compared to a USB harddrive to the same USB harddrive its 30 times slower at peak. And that USB harddrive is 1tb bigger. now some might say just use the last backup. Well to even acces ir i need a vm on that ssd because nobody plans that ssd especially one from a reputable brand like samsung dies after 4 months of use. Even if mine was rather extreme compared to the usual use of one of them. it's ridiculousthat only 50 bad sectors and a passed smart test causes all the data to be inaccessible. Also the expectationthat I have backups that can survivea nuke is unrealistic. If i had the money i wouldn't use decade old hardware. Now you might say just play video games on your gaming pc. Well i don't have one, all my desktops are on my server and the only other computer that could game properly is copying the drive. I pirated gamesI alreadyown on a laptop for just to play some shitty DM for a dozen mins. This thread is probablybecoming longer then any serious post I made on the fediverse. Anyways now that i dont have a ssd for vms ig i gotta use a dozen decade old hard drives from the discard pile of a graphics design studio since im broke and you cant run multiple windows on a single harddrive cause that shit fucking lagggs. Im so done with this shit, i can even torture myself by editing long overdue videos and ive watched so many video essays that I can't watch anymore. I might just start looking on ebay for like epyc Rome shit or something. HAHA I GOT IT TO COPY AT 135MB/s. So now it's done at 0000... great. STILL BETTER THEN 10 DAYS HAHHAHAHAHAHAHHS OR THE PREVIOUS DAY AND THEN SOME ONTOP JAHAHHAHAHSHSHDHDHHDJDJFHDJDJDJDHHFJDJDJDHDJJFHDHDHFHNFJFNJDJFKFJFJDJDHFH it wasn't done, ddrescuetime calc sucks ass like it's not gonna be like 12 hours instead of 8... all the copying was fine no errors ddrescue didn't see any faulty sectors and yet all my data is shot. I can't boot truenas nor can I extract the config of it.

How did you installed #NVIDIA drivers on #FreeBSD at the first place?
Ports? pkg? Or build locally from upstream tarball?
Anyway, GTX 1080Ti (assume you mean this, as there shouldn't be 1080i GTX, unless it's graphics "card" model, not GPU model used on it) is last supported by 580 series of driver and FreeBSD has ports below for it on main (aka latest) branch of ports tree.
x11/nvidia-kmod-580 : baseline driver kmods.
x11/nvidia-driver-580 : libraries and tools for the above.
graphics/nvidia-drm-{515|61|66|612|latest}-kmod-580 :
Additional kmod for DRM/KMS support that work with corresponding

@FreeBSDFoundation
I've started investigating #FreeBSD at (maybe) since 2.1.6 in conjunction with several other OS'es including #BeOS, #WinNT4, #超漢字(kinda proprietary package of #BTRON with huge font set) with several #Linux distros (Yggdrasil, Vine and Turbo as far as I can recall now). At the era, my personal daily driver was #OS/2.
After IBM discontinued OS/2 and the successor, eComStation, didn't actually released Japanese edition (ordered one and obtained English version for temporary use until it's ready, but never happened), I needed to decide which OS to make my NeXT^H^H^H^Hnext daily driver, and switched to FreeBSD, which seemed to be most familiar with me.
I've used several GPUs for XFree86 (and Xorg after it landed) on FreeBSD.
At first, VGA/SVGA driver was too slow, so I purchased a license of AcceleratedX to use S3 GPUs (and then, Power9000, Matrox MGA,...) and some ATIs(!).
When I've switched my daily driver hardware to notebooks, driver for new GPUs were mostly unavailable after AcceleratedX has gone.
But fortunately, found that NVIDIA is providing FreeBSD version of drivers for their cutting edge GPUs and ports were already available. After that, I choose PCs having NVIDIA GPUs everytime I need to purchase one.
I was happy for a while, but introduction of iGPUs caused headaches. There were too many screams that graphics/drm-*-kmod at their early phase was quite unstable and often broken. So I've always been looking for notebooks that can disable iGPU via BIOS / UEFI, but it became harder and harder.
Now I'm using Minisforum MS-01 that allows installing half size, half height PCIeX16 card which doesn't require additional power supply with RTX A400.
And noticed that I'm now one of the maintainers for #NVIDIA driver #ports on FreeBSD.
Today, latest Production Branch of NVIDIA GPU drivers 595.84 landed onto ports tree at commit ec6b356f6328.

The former #CEO of #Microsoft once described #Linux as a #cancer that was ruining Microsoft's #business. In the end, it's the other way around. Microsoft is the cancer that is infecting Linux and commercializing it without respecting the #philosophy of #free #software.
source: linuxiac.com/microsoft-opens-t…
Microsoft's #Azure #cloud runs on Linux #servers. Microsoft generates the majority of its #revenue through cloud #services. In other words, it makes use of free software—specifically, from the open-source community project—without contributing to or supporting it in a meaningful way. On the contrary, Microsoft has been fighting the spread of Linux on the #desktop with #Windows from the very beginning. However, the company has learned how to profitably market free software. Unfortunately, this is a sign that die-hard capitalists are incapable of learning. Their greed for profit blinds them to the common good. Since Windows now accounts for only about 5% of Microsoft’s business model, it is used solely to keep customers within the Microsoft ecosystem and sell them cloud services. Meanwhile, Windows 11 is getting worse and worse, partly due to the use of AI.
The only company worse than that is #Nvidia, which also uses Linux but nevertheless actively prevents the development of decent open-source drivers for Nvidia #hardware. So while the #company understands the benefits of Linux, it still actively resists contributing to this #collaborative #project.

#History rhymes. For me, it's how I read that an #nvidia #gpu was more likely to be stored in a warehouse than be placed in a #datacenter. And my understanding how quickly #tech advances mean that there's a good chance that those chips will be old tech before the #datacenters are built.

Did a little adventure migrating my Debian Forky box from the in-repo nvidia (v550) drivers to extrepo nvidia driver (v595) as a work around for the kernel 6.19.x -> 7.0.x thing.
Yeah, don't do that.
I think the Debian maintainers do a bunch of work to the in repo drivers to make them 'nicer' - things like working better in multi-head. At least with my system sddm worked better. Also, the 595 drivers max the CPU under Plasma and makes it unusable (load avg ~25 on i7-11700k).
I ended up rolling back to v550 and pinning the kernel version to 6.19 for now. I'm still stuck with waiting for OpenZFS 2.4.2 for this box as well.
Nvidia drivers sure do make a mess between the number of packages required (with extra spicy things like new and interesting package name differences between in-repo and extrepo!) and the whole kernel version to module building process is a chore. I really appreciate that the teams make this work repeatably - especially when I tried going backwards to 6.19 with 595.
Anyway, rolled totally back to kernel 6.19, nv 550 and everything works as it should including OpenZFS v2.4.1 on this kernel.
One annoyance along the way was rolling back to v550 caused a sddm login loop. Deleting ~/.local/share/kscreen fixes this. Appears to undo minimal desktop tweaks, probably less noticeable on a non-multi-head host.
Things you do to avoid housework. Ha.

You've not mentioned about hw.nvidiadrm.modeset tunable in your page.
But if you want /boot/nvidia-drm.ko to actually work,
hw.nvidiadrm.modeset=1
would be needed in your /boot/loader.conf. Otherwise drivers should work with old-school way (aka UMS in contrast with KMS). nvidia-drm.ko would be loaded but ignored but nvidia-modeset.ko and nvidia.ko works.
As yours are RTX 4060 Ti, you're safe but RTX 5xxx series are known to require GSP firmware to be loaded to work. For this, if you upgrade to RTX 5xxx or later series, you'll additionally need tunable
hw.nvidia.registry.EnableGpuFirmware=1
in your /boot/loader.conf for it. (It could disallow suspend/resume, though.)
If you want fallback to old GPUs that doesn't have GSP in it (pre-Turing gen.), you can specify
hw.nvidia.registry.EnableGpuFirmware=17
instead.
Why /boot/loader.conf but NOT /etc/sysctl.conf is to avoid race conditions.
If loading nvidia.ko and nvidia-drm.ko happenes earlier than setting the tunable, these kmods cannot pick the tunable on load, thus, tunables but not sysctls.
And more, you'll want emulators/libc6-shim, devel/libepoll-shim and science/linux-ai-ml-env for CUDA on FreeBSD to run easier.
It might be worth mentioning that Jensen Huang is actually from Taiwan and carries its citizenship. I'm sure Beijing will be thrilled to take that into account.

Yeah, I'm sure that sounds like a totally sustainable industry.
Datacenters. Now coming to a home near you!
#nvidia is partnering with a homebuilding company to bring small fractional #datacenters AKA nodes to your home, that upon scale, will be the equivalent of a midsize traditional datacenter. These nodes also tap into the power grid to use unneeded power. Homeowners also pay a flat rate for electricity.

But patch to upgrade #FreeBSD #ports are now #pending to be submitted until temporary workaround or fixed version for build issues of graphics/drm-61-kmod and graphics/drm-66-kmod reported as Bug 294870 and Bug 294875 is committed.
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=294870
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=294875
Upstream seems to be working on "real fixes", but maybe need some more time to finish. So I've attached a patch for workaround both for Bug 294870 and Bug 294875 at Bug 294870 already (not tested on any branch other than stable/15, though).
Greg Kroah-Hartman: "If you look there are thousands of unfixed CVEs in the older LTS kernels right now, and if distros or users that rely on those older branches wish to see those resolved, they need to provide working backports to us to apply, as our first attempt did not work (which is why they are unfixed in those branches.)"
Really asking for a "Pray tell us", given that nobody actually bothered disclosing the problem to downstreams and that the commit message was hiding it.
Either way, apparently the great LLM-backed patch backporting process that #NVidia is so proud of doesn't really work. Upstream doesn't really care about #LTS branches, and they should be considered insecure by default.

as support libraries / build helper provided by NVIDIA.
Note that -devel variants are for whichever newer of New Feature Branch (NFB) or Production Branch (PB) of drivers, not for Beta drivers. Released Beta is the trigger for me to start investigating for preparing upcoming NFB and/or PB.

Let’s start with some very recent history. CoreWeave is a data center company that pivoted in 2022 from crypto. (In 2021, CoreWeave made its money by… mining Ethereum.) Essentially, CoreWeave is a landlord for compute: companies pay for the use of its server racks for AI projects....
CoreWeave chief executive officer Michael Intrator, a former hedge fund manager,...
“They have to continue to borrow to pay interest on the last loan.”So,
Yeah. Looks like crypto, and crypto's Ponzi scheme way of thinking, has slimed its way into the "real" economy after all.
Oh and welcome back, global financial crash. We missed you. And eyyy, how you doing Enron long time no see:
CoreWeave isn’t alone in its complex finances. Meta took on debt, using a SPV, for its own data centers. Unlike CoreWeave’s SPVs, the Meta SPV stays off its balance sheet. Elon Musk’s xAI is reportedly pursuing its own SPV deal."Complex finances" are what companies engage in when there isn't any there there (SPVs were Enron's "financial innovation" too).
Peter Thiel pulling his investments out of NVIDIA makes far more sense after reading this. Looks wobbly.
It is perhaps time to discuss the enormous stock sales from CoreWeave’s management team. Before the company even went public, its founders sold almost half a billion dollars in shares. Then, insiders sold over $1 billion more immediately after the IPO lockup ended....
“It’s noteworthy that people who have a good view on that business are cashing out,” says Leevi Saari, a fellow at the AI Now Institute.and of course
It makes a certain kind of cynical sense to view CoreWeave itself as, effectively, a special purpose vehicle for Nvidia.#AI #GenAI #GenerativeAI #AIBubble #CoreWeave #CoreScientific #Microsoft #NVIDIA #crypto #grift #CasinoEconomy
This is not a healthy economy.

What's that hissing sound I hear...
I always feared that the AI data center boom was likely going to make the looming climate catastrophe inevitable, but there was something about seeing it all presented on a platter with a smile and an excited presentation that struck me as more than just tone-deaf. It was damn near revolting.A sobering take on #NVIDIA #Computex and the future it envisions. I find it more surreal than revolting--how do people not see that this future being conjured is not possible for us?--but yes, the tech sector has jumped the shark. The possible futures tech companies are evoking are revolting to a lot of people, not enticing or exciting.
All it'd take is one clever math result demonstrating you don't need absolutely gigantic neural networks trained on mind-bogglingly-huge datasets to achieve the AI goals of most companies, and NVIDIA's hardware dominance evaporates. Why would you spend thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on a GPU that uses 300 Watts of power when you could achieve the same thing with an ASIC or FPGA that uses 3 Watts? This is already true for many applications, but apparently it hasn't been widely realized yet. It'll be hard to ignore if/when it becomes true for the vast majority of applications. Which it could.
This is very reminiscent of the dot-com bubble, which expanded and then popped when I was in my early 20s.
