I've recently summed up my thoughts on generative "AI" on my homepage. Here's a screenshot of that section.

My thoughts on generative "AI"

I'm glad generative artificial "intelligence" was not a thing yet during the vast majority of my career. A number of realizations arose while exploring generative Large Language Models…

Generative AI is based on massive theft from creatives, without consent, credit or compensation. Using gen-AI is asking a chatbot to spit out the combined efforts of ripped-off creatives. It is industrializing and devaluing human expression, artistry and craftsmanship. Creatives are losing their jobs and motivation because tech corporations unscrupulously absorb and exploit their work. If you appreciate art, support the artists, not the thieves of their labor.

Tech corporations are building more and more huge data centers for AI processing, consuming lots of internet bandwidth, energy, water and more, increasing scarcity, prices and emissions, degrading the already fragile environment.

Unless you're using a fully local AI configuration, every bit of data you submit contributes to the power and reach of corporations and governments, decreasing your privacy and security.

Generative AI enables deepfakes that are widely used for abuse, deception, cybercrime, misinformation and propaganda, polluting justice, science advancement and news report credibility.

Yes. Release Highlights for 580.142 comments about it.
    nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/detai

If you need legacy 580 series (currently at 580.142) for old GPUs on you can use:
    x11/nvidia-kmod-580
    x11/nvidia-driver-580

And if you prefer DRM/KMS interface, one of
    graphics/nvidia-drm-{510|515|61|66|latest}-kmod-580
that matches your base FreeBSD version is needed additionally.

If you need libraries, you additionally need:
    x11/linux-nvidia-libs-580

Note that, as "-devel" variants of NVIDIA drivers on FreeBSD tracks whichever newer one of New Feature Branch (NFB) or Production Branch (PB), "-devel" variants are currently at 595.58.03, too. Both 580.142 and 595.58.03 are released this month (Mar., 2026).

Beta drivers are just triggers for us to start investigating for upcoming NFB or PB, thus, FreeBSD ports should never been bumped for them (although supports for testing could appear earlier with upgrades for PB, NFB or legacy drivers).

Latest Production Branch of package 595.58.03 is landed on main (aka latest) branch of ports tree.
      cgit.freebsd.org/ports/commit/

No plan for merging into quarterly branch (now 2026Q1), but next quarterly 2026Q2 would be created early April.

Note that this version drops support for a bunch of old (pre-Turing generation of architectures) GPUs.
Anyone using affected GPUs need switching to newly created -580 variant of legacy branch.

You can find your GPU is still supported or not here.
      us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86

580 series are NOT yet found on NVIDIA Unix Driver Archive page as Legacy version,
      nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/unix/

but I think one would appear later, as 580.xx is listed as driver for legacy GPUs.

We’re entering the agentic AI era — and infrastructure is evolving fast.

NVIDIA’s new Vera Rubin platform brings together specialized chips (Vera CPUs, Rubin GPUs, Groq LPUs, and BlueField-4 DPUs) into coordinated, rack-scale systems designed for real-time AI.

Instead of relying on a single processor type, this architecture splits AI workloads across purpose-built components — enabling faster inference, lower latency, and more efficient “AI factories” at scale.

The big shift: AI isn’t just about training models anymore — it’s about orchestrating entire systems to power intelligent, autonomous agents in real time.

Holly Ukulele! I had Python run some CUDA/Torch stuff on #FreeBSD using the #Nvidia eGPU and the #Linuxulator system 😱 Not in a Jail yet though. Also, the thing runs in a mixed mess of FreeBSD rl9 packages and Container-Base content; because I don't understand how you're supposed to use dnf to install things in /compat/linux. Maybe you're not supposed to... :D

Gotta sort my notes now and try to have it done properly...

But Linux counterparts (installed by overriding version of x11/linux-nvidia-libs{-devel}) need some fixes.

Beware! This version does NOT work on pre-Turing generations of GPUs, just as 590 series.

As real-time agents, copilots, and edge deployments grow, inference sovereignty—where compute is located, how fast it responds, and who controls the hardware—will define the next phase of AI infrastructure.

With NVIDIA GTC 2026 approaching, the key question is whether NVIDIA will formally introduce a new class of inference-focused silicon and fabric to complement its training platforms.

Five months later, no deal has closed, Nvidia’s CEO now says the $100 billion figure was 'never a commitment,' and Reuters reports that OpenAI has been quietly seeking alternatives to Nvidia chips since last year."

Today I discovered that I did not have the correct NVidia GPU drivers setup to run a local Stable Diffusion model. (Don't ask me about SD, I just have a new-to-me old GPU begging for interesting code to try.)

I resolved my driver issue with the following steps:

+ I pressed the Windows key on my keyboard.
+ I typed in the word 'drivers' and the clicked on the one suggested menu item that matched my search.
+ A setting panel appeared and informed me that I had four driver options for my NVidia graphics card.
+ Of the four options, one had the word "recommended" beside it. It was the selected one.
+ So I clicked on the "recommended" one.
                                                                                                      + I closed the window.
+ A new window informed me that I would need to reboot to apply the the change.
+ I rebooted, and found that Stable Diffusion can now see my GPU.
