Driving

I went to M and L's yesterday again.  I needed to buy some border fabric and I wanted some batiks to go with the dyed fabrics that came with the McKenna Ryan kits.  I had already seen the nice selection of batiks at M and L's when I was there the other day, but hadn't gotten as far as thinking about measurements or colors.  Back I went by myself, down this freeway and that, getting lost in Anaheim and wandering the streets without cell-phone nor GPS.  I passed Disneyland three times before I found it.
So I bought numerous yards of fabric; I passed Disneyland again before I came home and then I auditioned the fabrics for Grandma and Marcy.  I now have two panels with borders on.  I will try quilting them today.

In the afternoon Marcy asked me to accompany her while she took Kiana to... Disneyland!  It seems she has a year pass and it is just the thing for teenagers to do... spend the day or the evening or a couple of hours even, at Disneyland!  So back I went to Anaheim with Marcy (it meant that on the way home she could use the carpool lane).

"Did you forget anything at M and L's?"

No, I didn't and two fabric shopping trips in a matter of hours seemed excessive so I bypassed that suggestion though I have a feeling I'll get there once more this summer.  Of course with Marcy the trip seemed short whereas in the morning and being lost, I felt like I was on an expedition.

To me, getting in the car and going somewhere entails subconscious calculations of gasoline and time consumption, weighing out the pros and cons of battling traffic or (in Japan) maneuvering windy roads and weather conditions.  In Southern California, we just get in the car and hit the freeways, several times a day!!

Still, I find the freeways a bit nerve racking though I grin and bear it.  Just thinking about the speed and being penned in from all sides by the huge cross country trucks makes me grip the steering wheel and lean forward intently with concentration.  I always breath a sigh of relief when I arrive at my destination or stumble home. It is probably the combination of speed and many lanes and not being used to driving on the opposite side of the road.  And by the way, I'm pretty good at that... I only hit the wipers lever (rather than the turn signal) once a trip!

While I was in the passenger seat I admired a cross country heavy loader.  Now there's someone who seems to like driving!  The trucker's truck was sparkling and beautiful!

  1. does gas cost a lot more in Japan? And from what you say I guess they drive on the "wrong" side of the road as they do in England?

  2. After so many years of driving on the left, I am still hitting the wipers. I would really be white-knuckle driving if I had to drive in the states. Even being a passenger in the front right seat is somewhat scary.

  3. Our gas prices are all over the place here, but I know they are much less than in Japan. Norway is really bad, too.
