28mm ACW "Stones River" game at Nashcon 2018

I ran this 28mm ACW game at Nashcon this month.

Scenario - The scenario was from "Fire and Fury Regimental - The fight comes to Sheridan". The Federal center must hold out against furious Confederate assaults at the Battle of Stones River. This scenario makes a great convention game since all the troops start on the table-top and the action starts from the first turn and all players are in the fight quickly. This is a fun scenario with some Green USA troops, some Elite CSA troops, sharpshooters and lots of 1862 poor and eclectic small arms and artillery.

Rules - My favorite set of tactical ACW rules is John Hill's "Johnny Reb". I use the GDW version, often called "Johnny Reb 2". The game is fairly old school with lots of charts, but I run the charts as the GM and let the players focus on the tactics. We had several experienced players from the "Johnny Con" group at Nashcon, as well as some new players and I think everyone had a great time. I really enjoy playing old rules and I think there is a "retro-gaming" renaissance at the moment!

Figures - The guides are mainly 28mm ACW Gamer, Dixon, Old Glory, Perry plastics and Sash & Saber. I challenged myself to paint more this year since I was short about 120 Confederates and used Nashcon as the deadline. This is my motivational technique! I logged many hours at the gaming table in March, April and May getting ready for the convention. I typically listen to music, or podcasts while I paint. I find shows too distracting! How about you?

I'll probably pick an even bigger battle next year, or something with cavalry (which I don't have) to challenge myself to paint! I normally elect Western Theater scenarios and I'm thinking about doing "Spring Hill 1864".

Terrain - I used two terrain mats, cheap stereo-foam hills underneath, x-ray film streams, a Perry farm house, painted teddy bear fur fields, HO trees and scratch built fences.

Game - The scenario saw the CSA troops quickly assaulting the Federal line. The breached the Federal left and were making steady progress only to be halted by a second Federal line and a Federal counterattack on the CSA right flank. We called the game around turn 6 as it was getting late and declared a "marginal Union victory".

Cheers - Cory R.

War of the Roses game at Nashcon 2018

War of the Roses at Nashcon 2018 -

Me and my friend Titch run this game every year. This is a project that we have been slowly working on since 1999. The goal has been to add a unit or two every year and fight a scenario at Nashcon every year using all of our forces! The first table we used was probably 4x4 and now we have grown to a 6x20 table! We couldn't it all the troops on our table this year and will definitely have to use a 24 ft long table next year!

We use a slightly modified version of Medieval Tactica. It's a simple set of rules, with hand fulls of six sided dice that is perfect for convention games. We played a scenario based on 1461's battle of Mortimer's Cross. We played to a conclusion in about 3-4 hours!

Here are some pictures of the game:

Cheers!

25mm Frontier Miniatures ACW figures - 17th AL

I have a sweet spot for these old school Frontier Miniatures (80's) figures. I picked up a few on eBay recently and decided to paint some specifically for a game of "Across A Deadly Field" that I'm running at Nashcon in May. This is the 17th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

The 17th were organized in Montgomery in August 1861. They fought at Shiloh in 1862, where they lost 125 killed and wounded. They have an impressive service record and later fought at Resaca, New Hope Church, Kennesaw, Peachtree Creek and Atlanta. They lost about 2/3 of their men at Franklin during the Nashville campaign.  A remnant later merged with other AL units and surrendered at Greensboro, N.C. in April 1865.

Being that they are recently painted and the convention game will be their first engagement.....I'm sure they will rout! Here are a few pictures:

A sneak peek of the Shiloh scenario I'm working on for Nashcon. I still have to add lots of fences, orchards, camps, etc. I'm using 15mm buildings with 25mm fiures to keep the ground scale for the buildings correct. Thoughts?

Take care and Good Gaming! Cory

War of the Roses Game at Nashcon 2013

War of the Roses Game at Nashcon 2013

My friend Titch and I ran a 28mm War of the Roses game this year at Nashcon. We used the same table as my ACW game, but switched things up enough to make the change from 19th Century Virginia to Medieval England. It was a big battle, with all of our figures on the table. We plan on running this battle every year at Nashcon and our plan is too keep adding figures and tables and growing this thing into a "mega-battle"!

We used Medieval Tactica rules and  fought a hypothetical scenario from the Tewkesbury campaign of 1471. The Yorkists, lead by Titch, defeated the Lancastrians with an all out assault on the center of their line. Here are some pictures of the battle:

The Lancastrian right flank is closest to the camera. Rob is checking out his knights.

The battle as seen from the Yorkist right flank. Titch brought a castle to set up at the end of the table. We had some neutral "Stanley" forces set up inside the castle.

The castle! The battle is beginning to heat up!

Looking forward to running this game next year!

28mm ACW Williamsburg, VA 1862 Game at Nashcon 2013

The Battle of Williamsburg, VA 1862

Here are some pics from the Battle of Williamsburg that I ran at Nashcon this year. I ran the game using "Johnny Reb 2" rules, which as many of you know are my favorite tactical ACW rules. The game is a relatively small affair with around two brigades per side and some artillery and officers. We had five players and it seemed everyone had a great time!

The Rebs arrive on the field! The Reb's victory conditions were to inflict 40% casualties on the Yanks and to prevent them from taking the redoubt. The redoubt is defended by a 32# Howitzer and a large unit of VA militia.

The Yanks pushed hard up the center of the table, which worked out as a great strategy! They did get caught in the abatis and chewed up by the 32# howitzer, but it allowed some other units to apply pressure to the redoubt and flank it.

Charge! An isolated, brave rebel unit charged the Union line and suffered dearly!

The Union advance towards the redoubt!

This fire fight didn't turn out too well for the boys in blue.

An overview of the table at the con before I started to place troops. The Federals had to advance up the length of the table and capture the Confederate works.

Thanks to my friend Chris W. for taking the pictures and John H. for a doing some photo-shopping. We have started another blog at the link below. I guess the best way to describe the new blog is to say that is a "club" effort with a few different friends and gamers writing articles. Let us know if you'd like to contribute! It branches out from Cigar Box Heroes by covering Fantasy and Sci-Fi as well. Don't worry, Cigar Box Heroes isn't going anywhere, but I'm just going to continue to stick to historical themes and items of personal interest. Check out the new blog below! Take care - Cory R.

More Nashcon 2012 pictures

Nashcon 2012

Here are some more pictures I took of some of the games at Nashcon 2012.

The War of the Roses game that Titch and I ran. This was a photo
break! Jeff (in black) played on my side and Chris (red) played on Titch's
Yorkist side.

"Horns of a Dilemma" game. 1,300 25mm Zulus and Brits fight it out.
Hosted by Keith Sullivan and Roger Dospil. This was a great looking game!

Zulus!

The attack on the British camp.

Bob Moon's excellent 40mm FIW game. Bob has some of the
best figures and terrain at Nashcon every year. These are well
painted 40mm Sash and Saber figures (mostly).

Bob had custom die rollers on the corners of the table. I like how they
are incorporated into the terrain. Nice!

One of Bob Moon's 40mm Indian villages. Incredible terrain

Regimental Fire and Fury - the Battle of Stones River Dec. 31,1862
Mike Randles always runs a great looking game and this year he put on
a RFF game in 15mm.

Mike's great looking terrain and figures. I would have loved to
have played in this game but it ran during the same session as my WOR game.

Stone's River - just a short drive to the battlefield from the Con!
Nashcon is held in Franklin, TN every year during Memorial Day weekend.

More of Mike's 15mm rebs!

"It Came from Beyond the Still" - a fun looking game featuring hillbillies vs aliens!

"Warfare in the Land of the Rising Sun" - a Samurai game by Keith Sullivan
featuring 1,200 25mm figures. Epic!

"The Battle of Salamanca" - a great looking 15mm "Volley and Bayonet" game run by
Joe Collins.

August 1914 - a cool looking early WWI game run by
Jesse Scarborough.

All the King's Men - 54mm War of 1812. Ken Cliffe set up
the ATKM vendor table and then ran some awesome looking 54mm games!
