War of the Roses game at Nashcon 2018

War of the Roses at Nashcon 2018 -

Me and my friend Titch run this game every year. This is a project that we have been slowly working on since 1999. The goal has been to add a unit or two every year and fight a scenario at Nashcon every year using all of our forces! The first table we used was probably 4x4 and now we have grown to a 6x20 table! We couldn't it all the troops on our table this year and will definitely have to use a 24 ft long table next year!

We use a slightly modified version of Medieval Tactica. It's a simple set of rules, with hand fulls of six sided dice that is perfect for convention games. We played a scenario based on 1461's battle of Mortimer's Cross. We played to a conclusion in about 3-4 hours!

Here are some pictures of the game:

War of the Roses

Here are some pics from two 25mm War of the Roses games we recently played. I enjoy using Arty Conliffe's excellent "Medieval Tactica" rules.

They are fun, fast, simple and provide for a great game with a feel for the period.

Good Gaming,

Cory

25mm War of the Roses

Here is the freshest unit off my painting table! It's a 30 figure bill unit for my War of the Roses games. I use Medieval Tactica and it provides a fun and quick game with a great period feel.

So what's on the painting table now...I'm working on 10mm ACW for Fire and Fury!

Good gaming!

The War of the Roses!

The opening set-up!

This Saturday morning, me and and My friend Titch, ran a 28mm Tactica Medieval game at Nashcon, in Franklin, TN. We were able to lay out the basic terrain the night before, so all we had to worry about in the morning was getting the troops on the table!

Tactica is my "go to" set of rules for my personal ancients and medieval gaming, but it also works great at conventions because of its simplicity and of course everyone loves to roll hand fulls of dice! We basically play the rules "as is", but we've made a few house rules to cover artillery, and made some of the movement / formation changes a little more flexible. A lot of people commented on the rules, and how they used to play and enjoy Tactica. One father walked by with his teenage son and said, "these rules are older than you"! A lot of people asked where they could buy a copy.

The Lancastrians are moving their troops!

We had a great time fighting out another battle between the Yorkists and Lancastrians. The Lancastrians pulled out a victory this year, but I'm certain the Yorkists will rally and raise another army for another battle next year! We run this game every year at Nashcon and have made it part of an ongoing campaign narrative.

Fresh off the painting table!

Here are some troops fresh off the painting table. I'm getting ready to run a 28mm ACW game at Nashcon in May and have been painting more morale markers for the game. I'm trying to move away from lots of table top clutter and have all my morale markers, statuses, casualties, etc. represented by some kind of miniature figure marker.

28mm War of the Roses - I've been painting some personalities for a game me and my friend Titch are going to run at Nashcon. These are old Wargames Foundry figures.

The yellow markers are for "Shaken" status in Johnny Reb and Across A Deadly Field. I like the way the fallen standard bearers turned out. Dixon and Wargames Foundry (Perry) figures.

Orange represents "low on ammo" in Johnny Reb, and will work for "Disorder" in Across A Deadly Field. These are 28mm Dixon figures passing out cartridge boxes.

Some individually based artillerymen (and a lone pioneer) to help man the guns in JR or to represent a section in ADF.

War of the Roses Game at Nashcon 2013

War of the Roses Game at Nashcon 2013

My friend Titch and I ran a 28mm War of the Roses game this year at Nashcon. We used the same table as my ACW game, but switched things up enough to make the change from 19th Century Virginia to Medieval England. It was a big battle, with all of our figures on the table. We plan on running this battle every year at Nashcon and our plan is too keep adding figures and tables and growing this thing into a "mega-battle"!

We used Medieval Tactica rules and  fought a hypothetical scenario from the Tewkesbury campaign of 1471. The Yorkists, lead by Titch, defeated the Lancastrians with an all out assault on the center of their line. Here are some pictures of the battle:

The Lancastrian right flank is closest to the camera. Rob is checking out his knights.

The battle as seen from the Yorkist right flank. Titch brought a castle to set up at the end of the table. We had some neutral "Stanley" forces set up inside the castle.

The castle! The battle is beginning to heat up!

Looking forward to running this game next year!

More War of the Roses

War of the Roses

I got together a few nights ago with my good friend Chris W. He's a gamer, but as a bonus he
is also a neighbor within walking distance of my house! We were actually taking pictures of ACW figures in
his garage, but I couldn't help asking Chris for a couple pics of his superb medieval buildings. I added in a few of some old WOR figures I painted. Chris is painting up a bunch of these buildings for the WOR game we will be running at Nashcon in May. Anyway, thanks for letting me share these Chris! Click on the pics to enlarge.

28mm War of the Roses Game at Nashcon 2012

28mm War of the Roses

This weekend was Nashcon 2012, and me and my good friend, Titch W., ran
a War of the Roses game. We ran a hypothetical scenario set during the Tewkesbury campaign of 1471. We used slightly modified "Medieval Tactica" rules. These rules are great for convention games because they are simple, bloody, and play to a conclusion quickly. The average unit size was 32 foot and 18 mounted figures per unit.  The figures are mostly 28mm Old Glory, Wargames Foundry, Front Rank and some Perry plastics. We actually had more figs than table and didn't use all of the figures we brought to the con. Next year we are planning on a table twice as big so we'll have room for Titch's castle, a river and 100% of our figures. We had four players and a great time! Here are some pictures from my iPhone:

Nascon 2012 - this year was very busy and I think there were  more gamers in attendance than
in the last 5+ years. It was good to see so many gamers out gaming and supporting the vendors!

An overview of the starting positions (and my Starbucks)!

The Lancastrians on the left (my figs) and the Yorkists on the right (Titch's figs).

A close up of some of my troops about to go into action!

Titch's Yorkists

First blood... the light horse tried to ride up and shoot the artillerymen.
The horsemen  got shot up and routed!

Some of the Lancastrian army

One of my good friends, Chris W. played on the Yorkist side.
He brought his camera and will send me some better pics of the
battle to post. Thanks Chris!

Things got messy in and around the hedges.

Chris's Yorkist foot knights try to push Jeff's archers off the hill!
(...which they did with ease!)

After the battle...the Lancastrians won the day! Chris and Titch were
read a list of their crimes and then beheaded!

Some more plastic Perry War of the Roses

I have been in a painting frenzy lately getting ready for the local convention in May. This is the last unit I needed to paint for a WOR game me and my friend Titch W. are going to run at the con. Here are a few pics!

I base my figs on card to paint. Everybody has their own technique for this, but
I've found this is what works best for me.

The finished unit. This picture was taken with my cell phone on top of my car! The natural light
always make the figs look better than they really are! I also made about 10 feet of hedges for the game. I just
flocked a bunch of those paint stir sticks you can get at any DIY store.

Now I'll be moving on to more 28mm ACW Dixon figs!

The Battle of Eckmuhl 1809 - 15mm Napoleonic Game

The Battle of Eckmuhl 1809 -

We are playing the scenario from Dave Brown's "General de Brigade" volume 1 scenario book. We aren't
using GDB, but my own homespun version of big battalion DBX style rules. If I ever find the time I will post the rules here on the blog! The battle is pretty straight forward in that a smaller, attacking, elite French
division is trying to capture two villages and a wooded hill that are held by a larger Austrian division. Oh, and the French don't have any cavalry! These pictures represent the first few turns of the game. I'll be posting more pictures soon!

Here is a Wikipedia link for more information on the battle:

Austrian infantry defending Ober Laichling. These are old Heritage/Empire figures and
Architectural Heritage buildings.

An overview of the battleflied: The village Ober Laichling is to the left, and Unter Laichling is to the right.
These two villages are the objectives of the attacking French, as well as the wooded hill to the top right
and the breastwork to the top left.

Austrian Infantry defending Unter Laichling.

The elite 10th Legere have been repulsed from Unter Laichling. We use cotton balls
to represent "shaken" morale status.

The Austrians holding the wooded ridge. The commanader decided to move off the ridge and support
the fight for the villages!

French line infantry moving from the area around Unter Laichling to support the
attack on Ober Laichling. 18mm Old Glory figures.

Th fight for Ober Laichling - The French have captured a section of the village. The French
are old true 15mm Naismith figures....some of my favorite figs!

The Austrian counter-attack! All of my 15mm Napoleonic figures are for
the 1809 Danube campaign.

The Bavarians - marching to the sound of the guns! They will show up in
a few turns to help their French allies.

The scenario book - great scenarios!
