Cyprus Indymedia: The struggle of memory against forgetting

The author Milán Kundera wrote that the struggle of human beings against power is, in some important sense, the struggle of memory against forgetting.
As long as I can remember -- and here my memory is admittedly frayed at the edges and tattered like old antiwar posters peeling from the bombed out brick walls of another era -- the policies of our radical political movements and organizations have always involved a soupy, steamy stew of "pure" political analysis mixed with under-recognized sexual jealousies and tawdry intrigue.

Nor is this only the "inconvenient truth" of anarchist movements. We can go back to V.I. Lenin's ultimate decisions with regard to the battles between Stalin and Trotsky for control of the Bolshevik Party. The last straw for Lenin in this regard, after the thousand-and-one political analyses, the murderous reports, the debates over "permanent revolution," "new economic policy," and the like, was that Stalin was viciously rude in his dealings with Krupskaya (Lenin's wife). Indeed he was, to put it mildly. And that entered into and became a defining moment in Lenin's calculation near the end of his life of who should lead the revolutionary party in Russia after Lenin's death.

We can go further back to the relationship between Marx and Engels, and their lovers and spouses. Engels was deeply influenced -- in a very good and historically significant way -- by the Irish nationalist and feminist Mary Burns, with whom he lived and loved (but without getting married) for many years, and then by her sister, Lizzie, with whom he became lovers after Mary died (and probably lusting after her all those years). Upon Mary's death, a distraught Frederick Engels wrote to his buddy Karl, who could only sickeningly respond with, "Oh, sorry to hear that .... hey, could you loan me a few bucks, I'm broke again and my family is starving," or something close to that.

And this after Karl acquiesced to his wife Jenny's banning of Engels and Mary from their house because Fred and Mary were "living in sin" or somesuch nonsense -- even though Engels was paying for the destitute Marx family's upkeep. (We won't even get into here Karl's longtime "secret" affair with the Marx family's live-in housekeeper, Helene Demuth (Lenchen) -- where's the honesty, Karl? -- with whom he had a child. Good old Fred "took responsibility" for the scandal for a while to try to save Karl's reputation, but it turned out to be hopeless. The baby, Freddy Demuth, might have even been named after Engels.)

Or we can go even further back -- nearing the edges of Memory (why be bound by the corporeal limits of one's brain?) -- to Menelaus and Agamemnon, and Helen of Troy (the daughter of Leda and the Swan, who was actually Zeus during a state of metamorphosis); Helen's face was said to "have launched a thousand ships", and it is she for whom the Hellenic tradition is named (which will play into part of the story below).

Yes, Memory has long fingers, a strange way of squirming through ancient dust.

And yet there are those who want us to believe -- and who have probably convinced themselves of this delusion -- that sexuality has no bearing on history or on the actions of rational people (as though the non-rational is something to be shunned by leftists or at least transcended).

One of the most important writings from inside our movements exposing how irrationality, sexuality, and repression of one's sexuality have influenced radical political movements is Maurice Brinton's "The Irrationality In Politics", first published in 1970. Often paired with Wilhelm Reich's classic essay "What Is Class Consciousness?" (and I'd also add Sheila Rowbotham's "Woman's Consciousness, Man's World"), Brinton's introduction sums up his small booklet nicely:
"This pamphlet is an attempt to analyze the various mechanisms whereby modern society manipulates its wage (and house) slaves into accepting their slavery and -- at least in the short term -- seems to succeed. It does not deal with "police" and "jails" as ordinarily conceived but with those internalized patterns of repression and coercion, and with those intellectual prisons in which the "mass individual" is today entrapped."
Lest one think the history around this to be yes, racy, but also terribly arcane stuff, I call your attention to a very serious debate occurring RIGHT NOW on the Cyprus IndyMedia website where our radical leftist friends in the little but very important country of Cyprus are attempting to untangle the many sexual and analytical threads involved in certain political positions and attacks that impact on our movements today.

Their overview is enlightening -- and it is also painful (for me) to read, as it calls up so much of our own history in the Left in the United States in the 1970s and '80s. In Cyprus a self-described Left party, AKEL, runs the government. And that government is imposing a "solution" to the bifurcation of Cyprus that relies on outside and regional imperialist forces to keep the ethnic separation between Turkish and Greek Cypriots in place.

Cyprus is a place where what small parties say and do, matter. Thus, when popular rebellions have been occurring all over Europe (and especially, for the purposes of this essay, in Greece), Cyprus IndyMedia correctly opposed the actions of those whom Lenin would disparagingly call "Left-Wing Communists" and "adventurists" for their calls to "burn down the City." (Strange, I've been called those things myself on numerous occasions so I am usually sympathetic to those labeled as such. But not in this case.)

Now, it turns out, that some of those infantile sloganistas are exposed in Cyprus Indymedia for whose interests they serve, and not only in the abstract or ideological sense. Who is paying them? What positions do they take with regard to Cyprus' suppression of "inferior" nationalities and ethnicities? How do the political positions of Left-wing groups (and I'd add rightwing and ALL groups) have at their base a very personal and often concealed sexual/psychological component?

Here the details are necessary -- but they are also excruciating. Excruciating because they are so familiar (witness similar escapades with regard to the Green Party of Mexico a decade ago, for example) and because they are so seemingy intractable, imbedded in our collective unconscious such that they keep occurring over and over and over again in each round of rebellion.

One would hope that, I suppose, there is something to be learned each time we are forced to "reinvent the wheel". Otherwise, it is all so hopeless.

On that note I am excited to read how Cyprus Indymedia is addressing these matters, and is willing to overturn iconic stones to get to some truth -- which, in Cyprus, will indeed have impact on larger policies. That is a valuable enterprise in itself; and it is also important because their decisions will affect policies, social forces and even wars involving Europe and the United States. The issues they're dealing with within the Cypriot Left will influence and help shape what we in the real Left will be doing here, in the next few years over which the next wars will be fought ... and our ability (or lack thereof) to resist them.

I write in appreciation of the important work of our friends at Cyprus Indymedia against fascists and stalinists (sometimes masquerading, temporarily, as leftists).

A Comrade from Turkey Speaks Out

Statement by Barkın Karslı * barkinkarsli@yahoo.com

About the recent discussions on Cyprus Indymedia Collective
Saturday, January 15, 2011

Dear IMC fellows;

My name is Barkın Karslı, I'm a member of the indy - Istanbul Collective since its foundation. I just read about the recent discussions between Cyprus Indymedia and some other groups from Greece and Cyprus. I do not have Greek, so I could only read the English posts in the related websites / lists.

I'm sorry to see that the discussions were taken down to the level of making accusations such as ¨fascist sympathizers¨ and / or ¨nationalists¨ against Cyprus Indymedia group. I know Petros, Maro, Sue, Solon since we founded a solidarity e-group ( kalimerhaba hellenoturkish community ) and many other Cyrpiot Indymedia volunteers, including Greek and Turkish Cypriots since 2001, yes it has been 10 years now…

You can view the archives of our group from
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kalimerhaba_HellenoTurkish_Community/
and decide yourself if Petros or any other friends who are contributors to the group have had any 'fascist' (!) or 'fascist sympathizer'(!) steps so far. I can sincerely say that I have not seen any, if I did, then there would be no need for me or my friends from Turkey to keep on this fruitful relationship that led to many new initiatives in time, including Cyprus Indymedia, Istanbul Indymedia and other bi-communal events among peoples of Cyprus, Turkey and Greece.

I hope not a witch-hunt is ongoing against the current Cyprus Indymedia initiative, for it is easiest to put the blame on some voluntary people, when you do not want to look into the mirror, to see your own or other reflections.

Thanks, (bk)

Regarding the attack against Cyprus Indymedia by the para-state apparatus
11 January 2011

Dear members of the International Indymedia Network,

We are sending this letter on behalf of the Efylakas.com editorial team, because we believe that the accusations against Cyprus Indymedia are false and slanderous, on behalf of people who are in a suspiciously cozy relationship with the oppressive Christofias state.

The editors of Cyprus Indymedia have been harassed the last years by the state apparatus, the secret services and the police, and lately, increasingly, by the para-state apparatus of the Stalinist ruling party AKEL. Such organizations, under the "anti-racist" and "anti-fascist" banners, have criminalized every form of democratic dissent against AKEL, a Stalinist political party, that among others:
- Has collaborated with the occupational Turkish puppet government of Mehmet Ali Talat, an ex-volunteer solider of the fascist TMT, and recently with the far-right Turkish politician Dervish Eroglu.
- By collaborating with the puppet "political" leaders of the Turkish military occupation forces, AKEL has effectively denied thousands of indigenous Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot refugees to return to their indigenous homeland.
- Haravgi newspaper, the mouthpiece of the ruling party, passionately supports, to this day, the massacre of the 22,000 Polish POWs by Stalin and the NKVD - AKEL, and all the peripheral para-state groups that strengthen it, support a racist federal "solution" to the Cyprus problem, a constitutional regime akin to the South African Apartheid, where the northern part of Cyprus will have (by law) to be permanently Turkish, and the South will have (by law) to be permanently Greek.
- "Intellectuals" close to AKEL have openly called for an alliance between AKEL and neoliberal, capitalist forces in order to impose a federal Apartheid regime upon the Cypriots, both Greek and Turkish. In fact, back in 2004, such groups received funding by USAID and UNOPS.
Such para-state organizations are lying, by saying, for example, groups such as 'Epalxi' are racist and fascist, when in fact such groups are: - Grassroots student movements that oppose an Apartheid solution to the Cyprus problem - Are active supporters of further democratization of the state - Frequently bring to the attention of the press and the people the Stalinist behavior of the state, and members of such grassroots groups have been arrested by the Police for leafleting, chanting slogans, and so forth

AKEL's government, the same Christofias's government that these "anti-racist" and "anti-fascist" groups support, is the only government in Cyprus that had a blogger arrested for criticizing the government. Xenis Xenofontos, a young activist lawyer and a Socialist, had his house invaded at 6:30am on the 6th of May 2010 by policemen, had his computers confiscated, and the state attempted to prosecute him on a false pretext.

Supporters of such groups, instead of supporting the socialist activist they openly supported the Stalinist actions of the state and the police which included prior eavesdropping and spying on Xenofontos's communications!

It also has to be noted that since Demetris Christofias took over the Presidency, such "anti-fascist" and "anti-racist" groups have multiplied, and are usually led by the same small group of people, all connected in some way or another with AKEL. AKEL's supporters effectively use the labels "anti-fascist" and "anti-state" to name their groups, in order for the activists outside of Cyprus to be confused and as such to be below the radar of scrutiny by people such as you.

Please do take into consideration all of the above. The Cyprus Indymedia has been a victim of harassment by the state apparatus for years, on the contrary with the accusers of it that recently have been participating in violent rallies and demonstrations funded by two Ministries of the state and the state-sponsored "Youth Organization of Cyprus".

Thank you for your time.

Best regards,

Efylakas Editorial Team

Another Collective Response by Cyprus IndyMedia to New Accusations

New accusations against Cyprus IndyMedia were published in a letter to various global indymedia groups, here:
http://lists.IndyMedia.org/pipermail/imc-europe/2011-January/0109-bf.html

The letter of accusation is signed by the Cypriot groups named Falies; Enosi Anarhikon; Planodio Steki Dromou; and Anti-ratsistiki Protovoulia Lemesou.

Collective Response by Cyprus IndyMedia Collective

In this Response:
o- Political identity of the accusers,
o- About the specific accusations,
o- A little more about who they are,
o- The proposal of Cyprus IndyMedia.

Before we proceed we must ask once again for technical help with the Cyprus IndyMedia website, as it has been several years now that we have been forced to operate without Open Publishing, and our community has a very strong need for it. Open Publishing is an essential part of democracy and dialogue within the progressive and radical community: we have always been committed to it, and we would be very grateful if the global IndyMedia network could help us re-install such a service on the Cyprus IndyMedia website.

Also, we would like to draw your attention to the fact that the new fraudulent accusations against Cyprus IndyMedia have brought out more support from friends and allies. Please see this statement of support from the Socialist publication Efylakas:
http://lists.indymedia.org/pipermail/imc-europe/2011-January/0111-p3.html

We are very grateful to all of you who have written privately and publicly to express your solidarity with us in this difficult time.

* * *
o- Political identity of the accusers

Our own political identity is best seen through our actions and activities. We think that our actions best about who we are and what we do. Please see a short list of our activities here:
http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2011/01/cyprus-indymedia-collective-responds-to.html#activities

And please invest some time to examine the political identity of our accusers.
Since the accusers have attached some political signatures to the new set of accusations against us, we would like to describe the political landscape and their position in it.

First and foremost we must underline that the organizations who signed the letter are openly supporting the racist Apartheid Bizonal "final solution" for the Cyprus conflict, which is being promoted by the Imperialist powers that have invaded and still occupy Cyprus militarily (the UK/US coalition and Turkey) and through this military force maintain in our country an illegal occupation regime of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

The above signatory groups are involved in a racist campaign promoted by the ruling party to "legalize" the military division and illegal settlement of the island (in violation of the Geneva treaty), and to create a formal Apartheid regime from it based on Race Laws. The campaign is currently being promoted by the Government of Cyprus (which is in the hands of a stalinist, fake "left" party named AKEL), against its own people with the help of various fake "left" groups who operate as fronts and advertisers for that political process. Their "final solution" in the shape of Apartheid will destroy the native and indigenous communities of Turkish Cypriots and Hellene (greek) Cypriots forever.

In contrast to that, Cyprus IndyMedia and a vast segment of the population among both the Turkish Cypriots and the Hellene (greek) Cypriots are busy pursuing ways to remove the occupation forces from our country and enable the peoples of our two communities to live together in peace and equality again, NOT divided by Race Laws into zones and by differing grades of privileges assigned according to Race.

The four signatory groups mentioned above who signed the accusations are appendages and extensions of the Government and ruling party mechanisms (the nomenclatura), and they have staked out various sections of the progressive community as "their own" from which they issue proclamations and try to involve people in their campaigns. Those are aimed at whipping up "popular" support for the Government. Occasionally some honest and good people, often very well meaning but inexperienced in politics, make the mistake of getting involved with them lured by the promising slogans for "struggle", but when they realize that it's the Government, the local State and the local/global ruling class behind those groups, they leave disappointed and ashamed to discover that by participating they were unintentionally strengthening the hand of Apartheid. It gets even worse: it has been widely shown and documented that some of their members' and allies' activities are funded by the United States USAID (civilian arm of the CIA) and by the US State Department, plus by various State Ministries in Cyprus.

The favourite technique of the stalinist ruling party AKEL is to accuse everyone they disagree with - even members of its own Central Committee and Politbureau - of "right-wing" tendencies, "nationalism", or of being a "fascist sympathizer". And of course the front groups and political appendages of the party pick up the same terminology and use it to hurl against anyone in the country who disagrees with them... as they are busy promoting the new racist Apartheid State for Cyprus.

We have published several exposes of these people with documents, money amounts, graphs, photos, and with THEIR OWN admissions about this funding from the US and other foreign Governments.

Some of those articles researched, documented and published by us are here:
http://cyprusIndyMedia.blogspot.com/2010/07/us-aid.html
and,
http://cyprusIndyMedia.blogspot.com/2010/05/h-us-aid.html
and,
http://cyprusIndyMedia.blogspot.com/2010/08/blog-post.html

Even the daily Press in Greece and Cyprus is rife with lurid accounts of the US Government funds channelled to the Apartheid supporters in Cyprus who disguised themselves as "leftists", "anarchists" etc, in order to promote the campaign - some examples:
http://www.ethnos.gr/article.asp?catid=11378&subid=2&pubid=44381

In this article a US Foreign Service diplomat is quoted saying: "we opened up a hole and threw dollars in it":
http://www.ethnos.gr/article.asp?catid=15426&subid=2&pubid=48920967

In this article the head of the Cyprus Greens is quoted describing these people as a mercenary "fifth column embedded within the people":
http://www.imerisia.gr/article.asp?catid=12333&subid=2&tag=9360&pubid=2787109

But please do not take our word for it. Please write to the groups who signed the accusations against us, or telephone them, meet with them, and ask them if they support the Bizonal State "solution" for Cyprus. They will say yes. Please ask them if they support the return of ALL the displaced refugees to their homelands (they will say no). Please ask them if they support determining the country's Presidency by Race (they do).

In the new Bizonal Apartheid State they are seeking to enforce on us, there will be a Dominant Race and a Subservient Race consisting of the majority of the population, just like South Africa. The Dominant Race will have a vote that counts for four times the vote of the subservient Race. Please ask our accusers if they support that. Yes, they support it! Please ask them. Please ask them if they support the concept of "one person one vote": they will say no. In fact, they say that asking those questions makes one a "fascist sympathizer".

That is who they are politically. They want to silence and neutralize IndyMedia because it offers a multiplicity of authentic Left voices that oppose their authoritarian and racist campaign.

There is more about them in the sections below.

o- About the specific accusations
o- the accusation that we "attack",
o- the accusation of "nationalism" and "right-wing politics",
o- the accusation of "paranoia" in the attempts to burn down the City,
o- the accusation of "aberration".
One of the accusations levelled against us is that "Cyprus IndyMedia is used in order to attack the various actions of the movement".

Cyprus IndyMedia has never attacked anyone! We publish political news, information, analyses, critiques and criticism by various sections of the Movement. The groups who accuse us of "attacking" are referring to articles that express disagreement with their politics.

On the contrary, some the above organizations have been involved in vandalism and destruction "in the name of the revolution" of the few urban public spaces that we have on the island. These attacks are a matter of public record. Also, very easy to verify with a simple walk through town (in the Old Medieval ghetto center of Lefkosia), there is rampant vandalism of poor peoples and immigrant's homes with spray paint, feces and urine that members of these groups use to write "revolutionary slogans". They are proud of this! Most of their members live in the suburbs and come to the ghetto in the center of town to pose as radicals, vandalizing the poor people's areas with beer bottles, garbage and loud behaviours pretending that this is "revolutionary", while the community associations, neighborhood groups of refugees, immigrants and progressive organizations in the area are begging them to leave.

Cyprus IndyMedia has been working with the community organizations, the Faneromeni Elementary School (which is in the heart of the battle zone and has the highest ratio of immigrant schoolchildren on the island), and with neighbours to help calm the spirits, to reduce the conflicts and violent confrontations that are instigated by the above groups who signed the letter of accusations.

To summarize: we have never attacked anyone. The contrary is true: in the ten years of its life as a social-political entity of struggle and activist-journalism, the Cyprus IndyMedia Collective has been constantly under various forms of attack, threats of violence, illegal action by Police and other authorities, quasi-legal or legalistic actions in and out of the Courts, in the streets, and, worse of all, verbal and written emotional abuse, personal and political slander, libel and backstabbing from "comrades" who accuse us of being... what they are.

Another accusation (quoted from the letter, verbatim) is that Cyprus IndyMedia "advertised an event of the far-right wing enosist Ανεξάρτητη Φοιτητική ΕΠΑΛΞΗ of Cyprus University (http://epalxi.net/) the sister group of ΔΡΑΣΙΣ ΚΕΣ. Both the above groups support and promote the idea of the annexation of Cyprus with Greece)" [sic].

In the text above, they even invented a word to find a new form of accusation: "enosist". They didn't want to translate the word from greek which means "those who pursue Unity, or Union". Because it would look "bad" if people promote Unity.

Their accusation against us concerns an announcement to a Movement event that we published here:
http://cyprusIndyMedia.blogspot.com/2011/01/blog-post_04.html

Please judge for yourselves if this was a "right wing" event. The three featured speakers at the event were:
o- Giorgos Karampelias (Γιώργος Καραμπελιάς). A person who has been on the front lines of the Movement since the nineteen fifties. In the sixties he participated in the Lambrakis youth movement (the widely acclaimed movie titled "Z" by Costas Gavras is about the brutal suppression of that movement by the State, leading to the military coup d' etat in Athens, 1967), and he took part in the May 68 revolution in France. He has been a pillar of the Autonomist ~ anarcho-communist efforts in Greece since the toppling of the military dictatorship in 1974. He is the publisher of the activist magazines Rixi (Ρήξη), and Ardin (Άρδην ), here:
http://www.ardin.gr/node/3843 , and here:
http://www.ardin.gr/rixi

Due to his impeccable Leftist credentials and well-respected status within very broad sections of the Left he was invited by the Court to present a testimony of political analysis at the world-famous "terrorist trials" of the November 17th Organization, helping to turn the tide and politicize the trial. Parts of that testimony are published here:
http://www.ardin.gr/node/1419

Among the many volumes of books and articles he has written and published, parts of his work helped to expand, update, critique and modernize the Marxist heritage of political philosophy with ecology and ontology, helping to rescue its essence from stalinist distortions, from determinism and mechanistic (linear) thought - here is a presentation of one of his books along those lines:
http://katatransavantguardia.org/ardindb/page/article.php?id=ARDIN_I_42-S_2-A_7

His biography is here:
http://yiorgoskarabelias.wordpress.com/

o- Lambros Kaoullas (Λάμπρος Καούλλας), Socialist editor /journalist/ activist, founding member of the activist publication Emprosthofylakas (Εμπροσθοφύλακας), at
http://www.efylakas.com/

He has been very active in the University student movement and the pro-democracy movement, helping to break up the stranglehold of the reactionary parties on student groups and incubate the creation of self-organized, autonomous student and community organizations.

ο- Lazaros Mavros (Λάζαρος Μαύρος), Press and Radio journalist, painter, patriot and freedom-fighter. In the early nineteen eighties he was arrested and tortured by the governing party AKEL (same one as now) along with a number of other people and charged with "Anarchism". When some of the prisoners began fainting in Court due to the abuses they had received, there was a large popular outcry in support of them, and the charges were dropped.
Where in the above is there evidence that this event had anything to do with the "far right-wing"?

The event was on the subject of Neo-Ottomanism, ie, the political plan announced by the Foreign Affairs Minister of Turkey, Ahmed Davutoglu. The political plan is for Turkey (the second largest army in NATO) to regain its role as a Regional Power by dominating our region again as the Ottoman Empire did. His Foreign Policy plan is well articulated in his book titled "Strategic Depth", in which the plans for total domination (military, financial, political, religious and ethnic domination) of our region are described in detail. Turkey has embraced this plan officially now. It has been in the making since the nineteen fifties, but only in the recent ten years has it been materially and politically feasible for Turkey to pursue it in a more organized way. The invasion and occupation of Cyprus and the extermination of the Hellenic community on it, is the first step of a very detailed process of Turkey's Strategic Depth, as well as the crushing of the Kurdish peoples' self-defence units, liberated zones and autonomous regions, along with eliminating the Armenians within and outside of Turkey and re-igniting a panturkic power movement spanning the area from Mongolia to the Balkans while seizing back again leadership of the Islamic world. Short summary views of Turkey's Strategic Depth here:
"The man behind Turkey's strategic depth"

We of course oppose such militarist and colonialist plans, fused as they are with the global Corporate and Imperialist powers of Capital. We oppose them on the basis of internationalist solidarity among all the oppressed peoples and working classes of our region, and on the basis of popular power that can be built in the spirit of social unity and infused with progressive patriotism.

We are horrified that in the absence of a massive Left presence in these efforts in Cyprus, fascist groups are moving in to exploit the political vacuum with their own brand of racism and hatred of the Turkish people. We consider the Turkish people's resistance to be the first line of defence against Turkey's expansionist and militarist motions, and we are grateful for it!

The event was a very useful opportunity to articulate a much-needed Leftist analysis on a dangerous political situation that is often left uncovered in Cyprus and open to exploitation by fascist groups such as ELAM and others. ELAM is well-connected with European neo-nazi and "aryan purity" groups - if we leave patriotism to them to exploit as they please as an exclusive monopoly in their hands, all is finished.

The organizers of the event are misrepresented by our accusers as well! They are wrongly described as being a sister group of another organization which is entirely separate and which has very different politics and origins. The two groups differ, primarily, on their relationship to parties, and have an entirely different political history, springing from movements that are several decades apart from each other. The University Student organization EPALXI that organized the above event, is a grassroots self-organized assemblage dedicated to opposing the Apartheid political plan for Cyprus, and opposing the totalitarian control that electoral parties have on Univ. Student organizations.

There is nothing "right wing" or "nationalist" about who we are, what we do, and who we support, nor are any of our allies remotely "right wing". Most of us are Feminist and Green Socialists, Communists, Anarchists, Autonomists, plus there are several tendencies and individuals among us who do not wish to be "labelled" with any "-ism". We oppose national chauvinism vehemently, whereas our accusers uphold the supremacy of their own Cypriot nationalism and they are actively working to support the occupation powers to exterminate the native and indigenous Turkish Cypriots and Hellene (Greek) Cypriots on the island, in order for the "pure Cypriot Race" to emerge victorious. Talk with them and you will verify it for yourselves.

Another accusation against us is one of "paranoia" regarding the attempt to burn down the City Center under the pretext of "anarchy" and "insurrection" on the tragic day of the anniversary of our murdered youth Alexis, during which some of our accusers (namely the organization Falies) supported by publishing - during a very tense time - a poster inviting protesters to come to the memorial with Molotov cocktails. We rightfully criticized them for this irresponsible publishing. It was a very tense time in that December of 2009: in the preceding time there were street fights with Police, there had been several arson attacks against soccer fanclubs, banks, and a Police patrol car, burning of flags and defacement of statues. Manipulation of symbols is a very powerful technique used by AGENT PROVOCATEURS in our country to stir up conflict and to sow division among our people. Thankfully the community responded by avoiding the fake "revolutionaries" who tried to get people to burn down their own city and a disaster was averted.

And we were not alone in criticizing them: the subject even came up in Parliament in a discussion among the Members of Parliament on how to de-escalate the tensions in the ghetto of the Old section of Lefkosia.

And we were proven correct by the events. As the community wisely avoided the trap of PROVOCATEURS during the memorial protest for Alexis, avoiding the Molotovs, within a few days new actions by PROVOCATEURS took place in an effort to throw the country into a state of civil war: more arson attacks, and then the corpse remains of the former President were dug up from his grave on the first year anniversary of his death, stirring up an incredible sentiment of popular anger and frustration.

The plan by local and foreign powers to throw Cyprus into a new civil war is constantly made fresh and new again, with every opportunity. Our accusers are participating in this plan, and that is why they choose their language against us carefully so as to be as provocative and heavy with characterizations as possible, hoping that battles will break out.

And as you see with the accusations, it is all just name-calling!

Where is the proof for all these accusations? Whom have we "attacked"? Where is the proof that we are "fascist sympathizers" and "right-wingers"? Every single claim is answered, and the "proofs" are once again (just like in last week's accusations) shown to be either fake, or purposefully fraudulent translations in an effort to mislead people who are not familiar with the language or local politics in Cyprus.

The whole country recognizes these impostors for what they are, and rejects their fraudulent politics. People see them as "clever" and manipulative extensions of a now unpopular Government that was elected on the promise of Socialism but instead is bringing us Apartheid and economic austerity.

Since our country's population rejects these groups' reactionary and fraudulent politics, they try to convince people who are outside of the country, hoping they can fool them more easily. We hope you can see through the lies.

o- A little more about who they are

It pains us to be forced to enter personal details and "naming of names". And for that reason, since we have a personal history with some of our accusers, we have protected some of them from public ridicule by hiding their secrets and protecting them from the scorn that they deserve for more than seven years (yes, some of this story has a long history).

We are still reluctant to enter the cesspool of personal revelations and accusations, but we are now being forced to explain who some our accusers are, and to make manifest some of their motives.

We have a separate section here on:
o- some of the members of the group named Falies,
o- a little about members of the group named Enosi Anarhikon,
o- Planodio Steki Dromou,
and,
o- a little on the connections of the group named Anti-ratsistiki Protovoulia Lemesou with the State, via another group named KISA.

The group named Falies

Two of the founding members of Falies are former members of Cyprus IndyMedia, where they "resided" politically until moving on to the opposite side, to pursue authoritarian politics. They are Despo Pasia and Marios Violaris (Δέσπω Πασιά, and Μάριος Βιολάρης).

You can see some of the IndyMedia related letters here (they are best viewed on your browser in the ISO Greek 8859-7 character set):
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cyprus-imc-ellinika/msearch?query=despo&submit=Search&charset=UTF-8
and here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cyprus-imc-ellinika/msearch?query=%CE%9C%CE%B1%CF%81%CE%B9%CE%BF%CF%82&submit=Search&charset=UTF-8

Despo Pasia used to be married to one of Cyprus IndyMedia's founding members named Solon Antartis. During their time together they had two children. Despo Pasia has just been served Court papers on a divorce case and has become extremely irritated with this, lashing about any which way she can. We believe that the motive for her participation in the Falies instigation of lies and false charges against us is at least partially, if not entirely, the sexual jealousies, possessiveness and marital infidelity through which she became involved with IndyMedia.

We have already published some of this toxic sexual background material here:
http://cyprusIndyMedia.blogspot.com/2010/12/blog-post_20.html

And of course there were no denials, no rebuttals and no refutations by any of the people involved, even on the issues of marital infidelity and other violations of marital trust, because it is the veritable truth behind these public individuals. And how could there be any denials? We have witnesses ready to corroborate everything through their personal testimonies in any Court, any time, if any of this goes to trial.

Marios Violaris used to be an anarchist patriot freedom fighter who joined the opposite side. During his time in IndyMedia he embraced the ruling party's campaign for an Apartheid regime in Cyprus and eventually this brought him into a total opposition with the IndyMedia Principles of Unity.

During their brief time in IndyMedia, the two people named above, Marios Violaris and Despo Pasia engaged in several campaigns which consisted of vetoing and blocking everything, and were constantly wanting to censor (delete) articles they disagreed with that were published by our readers and visitors through Open Publishing. Also, they engaged in efforts and collusion with opponents to take over IndyMedia in order to make it an instrument of the Apartheid campaign.

Our final break with them came when they left in protest, furious over the fact that the rest of the group defended IndyMedia's position of transparency for all of our online email exchanges, while they insisted on maintaining a secret email communication list that was not open to the public. Their authoritarian and antidemocratic tendencies are now showing again through this vindictive set of new accusations they laid against us, signed by Falies. Just like the ruling party whose Apartheid campaign they have embraced, everyone they disagree with is a "right-winger".

Their sexual indiscretions left them open to blackmail and political extortion which, apparently, is one of the methods used by their "comrades" to keep them on a leash politically. They know that if they deviate from the Party Line, they will be morally exposed and then attacked as "right wingers", and they will be accused that they never really purged the "evil" IndyMedia spirit from within them. But alas, they really have purged it.

Lest we be misunderstood, we must state that we actively support in our personal and political lives all forms and expressions of love, eroticism and sexuality, including every form of sexual and gender identity and choice, including multi-faceted polyamory and polyfidelity, equality for lesbians and gay people that includes the right to marriage and the rights of bisexual and transexual people. We embrace all versions of a multisensuous pansexualism! And it is because of this that we find the sexual poison of the individuals named above, their betrayal of these values, their posessiveness, jealousies, oppressiveness, the cheating, pettiness, vindictiveness and the intentional hurting of other people by flaunting their sexual indiscretions and breaking their promises to loved ones, so objectionable.

And it hurts us to talk about this, but since our accusers are motivated (at least partly) by some of this sexual vindictiveness, the accusations against us must be seen for what they are.

We protected these people and their secrets for too long, but they are using our support for them to hurt us. We will not allow it.

A third person who is a founding member of Falies is named Gregoris Ioannou (Γρηγόρης Ιωάννου). He is considered "the leader" of Falies by everyone outside of the group. Gregoris Ioannou has been on a warpath against IndyMedia since the 2003 period when we first began to publish articles against the Apartheid plan, revealing it for what it is. He is a staunch supporter of the plan, and he is the engineer of all the accusations of "right-winger" against anyone who disagrees with him on his Bizonal Apartheid campaign.

His vehemence against IndyMedia became more bitter and bilious when the Apartheid plan was defeated in a popular referendum (he partially "blames" IndyMedia for the peoples' rejection of racism), and this was followed by an explosion of blind jealousy when he learned that a woman formerly close to him had moved closer to some members of IndyMedia.

Gregoris Ioannou succeeded in recruiting Despo and Marios (named above) into a plan to create an "alternative" to IndyMedia. They named their group "Falies, alternative Media".

Gregoris Ioannou is on a first name basis with Ministers in the Government. He meets with them whenever he wants in order to "make arrangements" and to ask favours for various projects. He even admits so in public, here:
http://nekatomata.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Recently, at the behest of the Ruling Party AKEL, the Police raided the home of a newlywed couple with a newborn child, seeking to find a blogger who wrote "bad things about the Government" on a website named http://christofias-watch.blogspot.com . They arrested the father, a Socialist lawyer named Xenis Xenofontos who often writes openly in the Press under his own name articles that are critical of the Government, and seized all of the computers in the family's home. The newspaper of the Governing Party (named "Haravgi") cheered the raid as a blow against the opposition, along with Gregoris Ioannou who joined them on this, while the rest of us protested this illegal violation of the Constitution as loudly as possible.

Gregoris Ioannou and Despo Pasia recently organized an "Antifascist Initiative" seminar at which some of the speakers are known recipients of US AID funds. In his own speech, Gregoris Ioannou singled out IndyMedia as one of the prime "right wing" outlets, and went to say that the power of the "State is not sufficient" to deal with us, and called for the formation of an extra-judicial, para-state, power to crush us. His speech is here:
http://nekatomata.blogspot.com/2010/12/2009-2010.html

Previous to that, in 2009, he wrote an article in which he claims that Cyprus IndyMedia is a "right wing" group of "informants", and claimed that we serve as a voice-box for... the archbishop! Here:
http://nekatomata.blogspot.com/2009/12/blog-post_29.html

He has openly admitted that when Falies joined a BiCommunal re-approachment political organization named Kardash they accepted - knowingly! - money from the US State Department to operate it is as an "anarchist" freespace, and that the internal process of the group Falies eventually wrecked that BiCommunal effort. He describes it all here:
http://nekatomata.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Writing on someone else's website, Gregoris Ioannou allowed a "slip of the keyboard" in which he describes the plan to bring the entire extra-parliamentary Left under the domination of the Governing party, AKEL, including anarchists, trotskyists, militant social-democrats, perestroika-oriented ex-communists, greens, radical music bands, etc, naming all of them in his "organizational" scheme. Here:
http://sirmastocomputer.blogspot.com/2008/03/blog-post_23.html?showComment=1206367331117#c6688003695448736700

We have published a whole article on the exploits of this fraudulent "leftist", with documents, citations, and testimonials, here:
http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2010/08/blog-post.html

The group named Enosi Anarhikon

The name of the group means "Anarchist Union".

One of their founding members, known in the community as "the tall guy", is a fanatic cigarette smoker who, when asked to not smoke during indoor meetings, responds by calling the request "fascistic". A few years ago he circulated a pamphlet in which he decried the "poisonous drug Cannabis" and accused all of us who support its legalization as "poisoners".

Several of the group's current and former members were affiliated with squatting an unused house, which they decorated with the "radical" slogan "Burn Down This City". The slogan is done in the style of a mural specially positioned so that it can be seen by pedestrian and vehicle traffic on the street. They were also involved with the incident of distributing the poster with the Molotov cocktail images during Alexis memorial protest, mentioned above.

Lest we be misunderstood here, we must explain that we have nothing against the appropriate use of Molotovs, and every other form of struggle, both armed and peaceful, as long as it is in the interests of the community. But any slogan or action to "Burn Down This City" is directly contrary to the interests of our people, who have already suffered three waves of war in the space of two generations, have survived displacement from homelands, genocide and ethnic cleansing. This sort of "revolutionary" posturing falls right into the hands of PROVOCATEURS who are intent on destroying our country through ethnic hatred and class division.

The group named Planodio Steki Dromou

It contains some well-meaning people who are involved with creating the alternative "scene" among radical and subversive youth, blending hippie, rasta, goth and post-punk aesthetics in street events. It was originally created on Facebook, and then abandoned by its administrators, and eventually taken over by the same elite group named above and under a heavy influence by Grigoris Ioannou.

Some of its founding members were entangled with the Molotov cocktail poster fiasco, and after realizing that the community was upset by it they were shamed into changing their group's poster for that event. But they eventually arrived at the position of being politically subservient to the Falies group, and following the governing "Party Line" of AKEL through the plan that Gregoris published for the domination of all sections of the Left under the Party. It still contains some very good, but gullible persons.

The group named Anti-ratsistiki Protovoulia Lemesou

The group is connected to the State and the Governing Party AKEL via another organization named KISA, which is directly linked to the Party through financial, political and family bonds.

KISA recently staged an "antifascist" physical attack on a peaceful protest in the city of Larnaka. The marchers, who included elders and children, were protesting the Government's immigration policy. The group named Anti-ratsistiki Protovoulia Lemesou aided them in staging, preparing and organizing this attack. Several people were injured and one person knifed during the attack. Two Ministries of the State had funded and supported this attack (Ministry of Education and Ministry of Interior), plus another branch of the State named the Youth Board. Their involvement was official, and widely discussed in the Press, Radio and Television after the ruckus.

Obviously, the plan to bring the entire extra Parliamentary Left under the domination of the Governing Pary AKEL has not succeeded, Cyprus IndyMedia being one prime example of independent and unaligned self-organized direct democracy volunteer group. But in the case of these four groups who signed the false accusations against us the plan has been successful.

o- The proposal of Cyprus IndyMedia

We ask all members of indymedia to help us re-install an Open Publishing system on our website so that we can expand democratic dialogue and the exchange of ideas, news and information among the progressive and radical communities in Cyprus.

We ask you to reject the fraudulent charges against our members.

Thank you,
Cyprus IndyMedia Collective

Cyprus IndyMedia Collective Responds to Accusations from Athens and Patra IndyMedia

The Accusations

Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2011
To: imc-europe@lists.indymedia.org, imc-process@lists.indymedia.org

From: Athens IMC & Patras IMC editorial teams, imc-athens-editorial@lists.indymedia.org
Subject: [Imc-europe] Concerning cyprus.indymedia.org

Hello,

We are writing this email to express our concerns about the existence and the character of cyprus.indymedia.org.

Its been more than a year that some political activists from cyprus have attended the assembly of the editorial team of Athens IMC and informed us about the situation in cyprus.indymedia.

Furthermore, in Athens IMC we are receiving many mails from people living in cyprus, people who are involved in the movements, complaining about the situation in Cyprus IMC.

Cyprus.indymedia.org seems to be violating and not respecting some of the fundamental principles of unity of the Indymedia Network.

Let's start :

cyprus.indymedia is using blogspot as host. You can verify that the domain http://cyprus.indymedia.org redirects in http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com.

This is obvious even from the theme and look of cyprus.indymedia. This also means that cyprus.indymedia uses no open source. It uses Google as host, and blogspot as platform.

Cyprus.indymedia violates the Indymedia principle of open publishing. You can easily verify this by browsing on the site.

In fact there is no open publishing since there is no open democratic assembly of activists and political people who contribute in cyprus IMC. Cyprus IMC is controlled by small private group of people.

There is no open character in Cyprus IMC, no open publishing, is not a media of the movements against capitalism and injustice. It's just another blog, controlled by a private small group which uses Cyprus IMC to express their opinion.

So we are getting to the content of Cyprus IMC - blog. Since the content of Cyprus IMC is written in greek, we who are participating in the Athens IMC and Patras IMC (greek is our native language) can understand it and convey it to you.

Obviously, the content of Cyprus IMC is violating too the principles of Indymedia Network.

Often, there are posts in Cyprus IMC that target people of the movement in cyprus. The administrators of Cyprus IMC blog refer to people with their names, surnames, even nicknames, with photos of them, accompanied with slanderous ratings . Actually the second link below contains even information on the private life of a female comrade, deeply violating her privacy.

Some examples :
http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2009/12/blog-post_04.html

http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2010/12/blog-post_20.html

Even if the Indymedia IMC network globally fights against injustice, exploitation, racism and nationalism the content of Cyprus IMC seems to refute it.

In contrary Cyprus IMC blog, tends to make constitutional propaganda and reproduce stereotypes of hate and nationalism. In example, concerning the matter of greek-speaking and turkish-speaking residents of Cyprus Island, Cyprus IMC blog identifies with preservatives ideologies and nationalists points of view.

Some examples:
http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Cyprus IMC is attacking anti-fascist anti-nationalist actions against ELAM (greek nationalists group in cyprus). It supports and idenfities with the nationalists about deportation of immigrants. It is positioning against left and anti-authoritarian initiatives which stand against oppose to nationalism and fascism. Cyprus IMC aggrees with categorizing the people who are forced to migrate and leave their counrty in "legals" and "illegals".

Example :
http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2009/12/blog-post_27.html

From our part, as political activists we participate in the movement in Greece against capitalism and state, against injustice, exploitation. We participate in Athens IMC and Patras IMC because we believe in the principles of Indymedia Network and we believe that the people can use information on their long way to social liberation.

In the case of Cyprus IMC, having in mind that it has been violating major principles of Indymedia Network for many years now, principles related to open publishing, open source, open assembly editorial team, content against capitalism, racism, nationalism, having in mind suggestions and complains from people in cyprus we request that :

- The domain cyprus.indymedia.org redirects no more in the blog
http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com

- Current administrators of Cyprus IMC blog have no further authorization in the part on Indymedia Network called cyprus.indymedia.org in Global IMC or elsewhere.

- Cyprus.indymedia.org is removed from the Indymedia IMC's lists all around the world.

For further explanations, informations or anything else on the case of Cyprus IMC we are at your disposal.

Editorial Teams of Athens IMC and Patras IMC

Cyprus IndyMedia Collective Responds

First we would like to thank the comrades in Athens and Patra for reminding all of our IndyMedia colleagues in Europe and globally that imc-cyprus is still without technical support from the network in order to operate an Open Publishing system on the imc-cyprus website - this is something we have been requesting for several years now. Open Publishing, which is the core of indymedia's mission and one of its salient characteristics, is indispensible for the communities of Cyprus. We are in dire need of it.

We have been requesting help from everyone we can find within indymedia who has technical skill and knowledge, to help us install and operate an Open Publishing system for several years. Please see here for more information:
"Cyprus needs to have a trilingual IndyMedia website where people can publish freely and openly in the Hellenic, Turkish and English languages - in the style of Open Publishing that IndyMedia has been known for within the politicized radical and alternative community since the beginning of this decade. We are very upset and disrupted with the fact that Open Publishing is not possible right now..."
From: "Why a Temporary Page?"
http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2009/08/why-temporary-page.html

We would be very happy to get rid of the free service provided by google, if we can offer to the community Open Publishing again as we did for several years before the most recent crash of our server. The server was named "Illich". It was hosted and serviced by our colleagues of Hamilton imc; more specifically by the personal graces of techie extra-ordinaire John Milton. It crashed for good in December of 2007:

A Detailed Response to the Rest of the Accusations

Here we provide the context and background of who we are and how we operate, and specific responses:

o- The Military and Political Situation
o- Opposition to Apartheid
o- Publication Languages and Participation
o- Our Values and Principles
o- Activities
o- Security, Meetings and Work
o- Publishing Names and Photos
o- The Links Provided by the Accusers
o- Anonymous Charges
o- What we Propose

o- The Military and Political Situation

Cyprus is a tiny island country in the Eastern Mediterranean, invaded and occupied by the vastly superior military forces of Turkey armed with US weapons, through which they have enforced genocide and ethnic cleansing on us, causing half the population to become displaced refugees. Furthermore, the invading power has installed an illegal occupation regime and has been engaged for several decades now in illegal settlement of the country that has altered the demographic composition of the population. It is currently engaged in an effort to overpower and wipe out the indigenous Turkish Cypriot and Hellene (greek) Cypriot communities.

In addition, Cyprus is illegally occupied by military forces of the United Kingdom, who, along with the United States are using the country as a forward base to wage war against our neighbours in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan.

The legal Government of Cyprus (which now controls only half the country), has been since the mid nineteen sixties continuously under the control of an alliance between the local ruling class and the global Imperialist powers. Its political party is a stalinist organization that markets itself and its reactionary policies as a fake "left" agenda. By the nature of these circumstances, the discourse of any moral and principled political opposition to them - which we are a part of, and in some ways we spearhead - has to navigate both against right-wing Imperialist agendas AND against the false and fake "left" presentations of reactionary and oppressive policies enacted by Capital and the State.

The newest and most immediate danger that Cyprus faces now is that the global Imperialist powers, along with the invading power (Turkey) and with the blessings of the fake "left" ruling class of Cyprus, have decided to declare the occupation and ethnic cleansing as "legal", and create a "final solution" to the Cyprus conflict in the form of an Apartheid State. The proposed plan is replete with Race Laws, unequal voting rights and permanent displacement of tens of thousands of refugees who shall never be allowed to return to their homelands.

This plan for a racist Apartheid regime for Cyprus is not only a major injustice, but also a recipe for permanent war in our region, which will be a boon to global Capital and the authoritarian States that control the area. Along with many other radicals and progressive people we are immersed in the struggle against all of this, and we are committed to a struggle for liberating and re-uniting our country in an environment where the two main ethnic communities, the Turkish Cypriots and Hellene Cypriots, can live re-united together again in peace, equality and justice, free from military occupations.

o- Opposition to Apartheid

Beginning in 2003, Cyprus IndyMedia gave space to voices that criticized the emerging Apartheid plan (at that time it was known as the "Annan Plan", named after the Secretary General of the United Nations).

Our positions, during a difficult time when it was not easy for leftists to speak up about this, gained the support of the Turkish Communist Party and internationally known leftist figures such as Mikis Theodorakis.

Immediately we received attacks from both the fake "left" (the stalinist establishment and its agents and appendages within the progressive community) and from extrajudicial (illegal) quarters aligned with the right-wing Imperialist powers.

The stalinist establishment and its agents posing as "anarchists" attacked us by labelling us as "fascists", "nationalists", etc. for publishing critiques of the Apartheid Plan.

The US/UK-led coalition attacked us by ordering the Government of Cyprus to launch an illegal investigation against us; the Police said they were exploring whether we constitute a "danger to US interests":
"Government Admits Investigation Against Indymedia Initiated by US Intelligence"
http://www.indymedia.org/en/2004/07/111547.shtml

and:
"Some of the basic materials of "The Case", collected"
http://lists.indymedia.org/pipermail/imc-cyprus/2005-August/0831-ni.html

The community rallied to our support, forcing the Minister of Justice to issue an apology, and Cyprus IndyMedia became a flagship for the expression and publication of radical and progressive views and news of the struggle against the racist Annan Apartheid Plan.

Since 2004 we have survived a continuous stream of assaults by both the formal "legal" apparatus of the State and Capital and by their illegitimate appendages and agents within and outside of the progressive community who pose as "anarchists". These assaults include Court cases; Police harassment; illegal investigation into our personal finances; slander and libel; attacks by hackers and denial of service attacks on our website; threats of physical violence (more on that below).

We continue to give voice to points of view, investigative reports and news that the ruling alliance between the stalinist and Imperialist forces does not want published. Thus Cyprus IndyMedia has become a main feature of the political and cultural opposition against the regime and its unholy Apartheid scheme.

o- Publication Languages and Participation

From its inception, because of our commitment to the unity and reconciliation between the ethnic communities of Cyprus, Cyprus IndyMedia has published in three languages: in the Turkish, Hellenic (greek) and English languages. It's easy to see that both on our current homepage (upper right-hand corner),
http://cyprus.indymedia.org
and in our archives (please see links to the archives at the bottom of this document).

Please note on this that our accusers above who wrote that the "content of Cyprus IMC is written in greek" are lying.

o- Our Values and Principles

These are expressed very clearly through our actions! A list of some of our activities (in the next section below) speaks volumes about what our real values and principles are.

But we have also articulated our Values and Principles in many ways, especially in the founding documents of the Cyprus IndyMedia Collective. In light of the above accusations against us which attack our social and political values, doubting our "movement credentials", we invite you to examine our papers and see for your yourselves.

Our commitment to IndyMedia's values and principles are stated clearly in our founding papers, which we republished under our "Editorial Policy" heading, here:
http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2008/08/editorial-policy.html

Those values form our contract with the community. We operate with transparency and openness to the community in all of our functions, and that is the reason why so many people support what we do and participate in our activities.

One of our founding documents that specifically deals with values and principles that express our opposition to the rule of Capital and the State is titled "The Short Statement" and deals with various levels and elements of politics. It was cemented in words in a collaboration between BarkIn KarslI (from Istanbul, later became a founding member of imc-istanbul) and Petros Evdokas (one of the founding members of the Cyprus IndyMedia Collective). o- Activities

Following is a list of some of our activities from the last few years. We believe that actions speak more truth than words, and our actions are a testament to our social-political values. Through them you can see that in addition to being activist journalist/ editors, we are also social-political activists and community organizers.

We have engaged in the following activities as members of the Cyprus IndyMedia Collective:

o- We provide free healthcare (natural medicine) to activists and their loved ones, as well as to people who have no other financial or medical options, including immigrants, refugees, poor people, and people marginalized or excluded from the mainstream for reasons of gender or sexual prejudice, racism or cultural bias against them.
o- We provide free classes in Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Kung, and Yoga.
o- We operate a Psychedelic support group.
o- We operate a Natural Therapy school.
o- We have been active in the streets, in marches to oppose the war against our neighbours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Lebanon.
o- We've participated in BiCommunal events for Peace and Reconciliation; for finding the remains of missing persons from the war.
o- We've taken a leading role in the legal defence of activists arrested, beaten up and charged by Police with "anarchism" and "violence", by organizing legal defence teams, finding witnesses, appearing in Court, publishing defences of activists, etc.
o- We participated in the efforts to organize a community Initiative Against State Repression.
o- We participated in the protest mobilizations of asylum-seeker immigrants and refugees from Kurdistan and their families, who engaged in hunger strikes and a very intense street sit-in. We helped with:
o- feeding protesters and their families;
o- clothing the hunger strikers after a storm washed out the sit-in.
o- We arranged for the child a political refugee (asylum seeker) to receive a surgical operation for free from a volunteer doctor.
o- We've offered free tutoring to immigrant schoolchildren who have trouble with language and other school lessons.
o- Humanitarian Aid shipments (clothes, children's supplies):
o- to the Palestinian refugee community in Beirut (Shatila), which due to political reasons was derailed by authorities and we delivered it to Kurdish Syrian refugees;
o- to the flood-stricken rural communities in the Philippines; which we delivered in collaboration with the Filipino local immigrant community.
o- Hosting of international activists of all sorts, including:
o- members of Beirut IndyMedia;
o- the Free Gaza Movement / Ship to Gaza;
o- independent movie -makers;
o- individuals in need of shelter (battered or abused persons; persons hunted by illegitimate or abusive authorities, etc.);
ο- healthcare workers who volunteer in Palestine as "internationals".
o- Helped with independent movie productions, including:
o- the BiCommunal /multilingual film titled "Where Are You From?" created by the Turkish Cypriot radical cultural group Baraka and Nazen Sansal;
o- the upcoming documentary on Cyprus by movie -maker and LA Weekly author Mel Yiasemide;
o- upcoming documentary by noted vanguard movie maker Angela Melitopoulos (she is a student of the legendary Nam June Paik and a cinematic collaborator of Antonio Negri);
o- a documentary on the Annan Plan initiated by Demetris Desylas, activist and movie maker who came to Cyprus from Portland, Oregon.
o- We participated in struggles in the schools:
o- to protect children's rights to be free from religious indoctrination in school;
o- initiated a successful community struggle (teachers, parents, students and neighbours) against an authoritarian Headmaster who abused children (she was supported by the pseudo "left" regime). The struggle included trials in the Courts and workplace organizing, succeeding in removal of the offending abuser;
o- in a successful campaign to stop the illegal fluoridation of children in the schools.
o- Alternative Community activities:
o- film festival on the September 11 events that led to war in our region;
o- movie viewing and discussion nights;
o- several years of regular evenings set aside for activist dialogues around the needs of the Alternative Community.
o- For several years in a row, we have served as the contacts for organizing within the context of the World Wide Marijuana March, and are involved in all the efforts to legalize Cannabis in our country.
o- Promotion of the Alternative Economy (operating outside Capitalism) through volunteer work, labour and goods exchange, formation and support producer co-ops, worker-owned businesses, and support for the non-profit community.
o- Struggles against Big Capital landlords in the Old City (Medieval center of Lefkosia, the capital of Cyprus). These included the publication of revelations of Big Capital's connections to corrupt politicians and thugs (disguised as "anarchists") who help to destroy a neighbourhood, buy it up cheaply and then "develop" it for Big Business, exploiting immigrant slave workers in the process both as labourers and as renters stacked like sardines up in large numbers in small apartments without basic hygiene facilities. These struggles included organizing in the neighborhood and action in the Courts.
o- Through our political contacts we were able to convey to the West timely reporting from the front lines during Israel's invasion of Gaza and to disseminate to the world eye-witness first-hand reports from Beirut during Israel’s invasion of Lebanon.
o- We recently collaborated with the Palestinian activist community in Cyprus to translate and produce a booklet on the Nakbah (Palestinian Holocaust), titled "Nakba, The Continuing Genocide in Palestine; A synoptic guide to the history and issues".
o- We have good relations and co-operate with internationally known freedom fighters such as Bill Ayers (Weather Underground) and Dana Beal (World Wide Marijuana March), and correspond continuously with many known and unknown figures of the global Liberation Movement.
o- Within the global indymedia network, our members have participated actively in the work of various volunteer bodies and work groups, including: new-imc; www-features; imc-communication, imc-finance; imc-process; imc-women.

o- Security, Meetings and Work

The various threats to our safety and security and the constant efforts to disrupt our work by regime collaborators and provocateurs (posing as "anarchists") have not succeeded in reducing our community work, our efforts, or our commitment. But they were the reason why we modified the "open meeting" policy to something that works better:
o- Our meetings are open to everyone who wants to work with us. They are not open to disruptors. Nor to anyone who wants to enforce the party line of the establishment or of Imperialism on us, nor to individuals or groups whose intent is to transform the work-sessions into a Third World coffee-shop shouting match.

In that spirit, all the work meetings to achieve all the work and projects listed above flow well, and through the decade there have been numerous people who passed through our doors, sometimes to work only on specific projects, sometimes to stay on for several years and commit to shouldering positions of responsibility.

Part of IndyMedia's legacy is that indymedia should "not be owned or controlled by any one group", which is part of the reason that our organization embraces progressive and radical people of all sorts, including Socialists, Communists, Anarchists, Feminists and Greens of various ethnic and cultural origins and of a multitude of identities in terms of sexual, gender, linguistic and faith orientations. This enrichment is part of indymedia's strength and bond with the community - we believe that we embody it well, and gracefully.

Last year one of our members was targeted by a street poster campaign done in fake "anarchist" style, in which his photo was published along with the insinuated anonymous charge of being a police informant, clearly targeting our member for the violence that is reserved for informants:
http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2009/12/blog-post_09.html

This did not deter us, but it's an indication of the climate in which we must operate.

Our island country is small (less than a million people distributed mostly in a few small cities), most of us are related to each other, and almost "everyone knows everyone". And so anyone who wishes to work with us finds us easily in the marketplace, in school, in the street, at public events, on the phone, or by email. A few of our member's identities are openly known in public (we protect the identities of all the rest of our members), and so it's very easy for anyone who wants to join our projects or meetings to do so.

Some of our names and places are well known and accessible through the phone book, the internet, and one of our locations is even identified from space:

or,
http://wikimapia.org/10097482/Sofouli-Str-16-Ap-207-1096-Nicosia-Lefkosia-Republic-of-Cyprus

We operate on the basis of direct democracy, transparency, rotation of duties and responsibilities, sharing of all skills and knowledge, and a non-hierarchical mode of decision-making based on consensus. Those who appreciate this type of process know where to find us and are always welcome to work with us.

o- Publishing Names and Photos

We are accused of publishing names and photos of some people. Yes, we have published the names and photos of individuals who are involved in activities funded by the US State Department and US AID (the civilian arm of the CIA) and other foreign powers, who have infiltrated the left community posing as "anarchists" or in various other "leftist" modes, promoting the agenda and values of racism and Imperialism packaged and marketed in "leftist" slogans. And we will continue to publish them.

The revelations we made about their funding are from their own self-confessed publications (they are proud of it!). The same applies to their photographs. To this day, not a single one of our revelations about these people has been refuted, denied or disproven by them or by anyone.

We believe that the progressive community should know who is infiltrating it and which power is funding the agendas that these people promote.

One of the accusations listed against us above concerns a "naming and shaming" that we did by publishing the names of these three organizations: Αυτόνομη Δράση Αντιεξουσιαστών (ΑΔΑ), Βιβλιοθήκη - ΑΓράμματα, and, "Εναλλακτικά Media Φάλιες". These groups, in December of 2009, instead of resisting the action of provocateurs in the Old City of Lefkosia, went ahead and published on their websites a poster calling for the burning down of the city with firebombs, in the vain hope that this would lead the youth to an insurrection ("right") on the anniversary of the brutally murdered and martyred youth Alexis Gregoropoulos in Athens. We called them on their responsibility for publishing what they did. Also, for their behind-the-scenes participation in the political machinations that excluded the local and immigrant residents and local radical community organizations from community dialogues surrounding a controversial "street party" scene that was the source of vandalisms and damages to poor and immigrant peoples' homes in the ghetto. Yes, we did indeed name them and shame them.

Another one of the accusations is that we supposedly published "information on the private life of a female comrade, deeply violating her privacy." The person in question is a public figure who is politically active within the context of funding from the US State Department and US AID. The information we published is already public knowledge which she herself has made public through her behaviour, and the news has been buzzing for several years now as "juicy gossip" in every cafe and political gathering. Furthermore, the information is from Court testimony in an upcoming divorce trial. All Court procedings are open to the public specifically for this purpose: in order for the truth to be known to the community and to be established as such.

o- The Links Provided by the Accusers

Even the simplest reading of the articles published at the links provided by our accusers to "prove" our guilt, makes it obvious that the anonymous accusers hiding behind Athens imc are lying.

This article at this link (provided by our accusers) supposedly "proves" that we are nationalists:
"Δεκατρία Σημεία, συν Δύο"
http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

The article we published:
o- Exposes a Member of Parliament representing the right wing "loyal opposition" party (DHSY) for his blatant, clumsy and stupid anti-communism which reeks of the reactionary McCarthy era.
o- The article charges the ruling party (AKEL) with:
o- having betrayed its mission for Socialism,
o- having betrayed the people by opposing (instead of leading) the anti-colonial struggle in the nineteen fifties,
o- having betrayed the people by supporting the Church dictatorship in the sixties and seventies (instead of leading the pro-democracy opposition against it),
o- having betrayed the people by not participating in (and opposing) the anti-occupation struggle, even coming to the point in recent years of aligning itself with the occupying power.
How do these positions "prove" that we are nationalists? Red and Black internationalists? Yes. Patriots? Yes! But "nationalists"? Where is the "proof" for that?

Another article cited by our accusers to "prove" that the Cyprus IndyMedia Collective supposedly "supports and idenfities with the nationalists about deportation of immigrants" is this one:
"Σπρώχνουν το Λαό στο Φασισμό"
http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2009/12/blog-post_27.html

The article begins with a photo from street protest graffiti that says: "Shit on the Fascists". It goes on to explore the connections of a fascist-leaning organization in Cyprus with known fascist organizations in Europe, confirming that they are a very dangerous sort.

Furthermore the article goes into a long analysis of how the pathetic, fanatical and authoritarian actions by some sections of the Left actually promote fascism instead of diminishing the danger. These include actual mistakes from honest Leftists, but on the main, consist of conscious, manipulative and intentional actions by authoritarian and stalinist sections of the fake "left" intended at fostering divisiveness and hatred within the community (instead of investing in popular unity), and aimed at cultivating an artificial situation in which the Police are being called on by "radicals" to violate free speech and the Constitution, further empowering the State to erode the few freedoms we have left. We believe that honest appraisals among progressives and radicals of where things are going are the lifeblood of democracy, and the only way to fight fascism effectively.

It turned out that our analysis was correct, because by the same time next year, the fascists had doubled the numbers of their members and of those willing to come out in public to march under their despicable banners AND for the first time there are now members of the public applauding them!

Where in all this is the "proof" that the Cyprus IndyMedia Collective is "nationalist", or that our Collective supposedly "supports... the deportation of immigrants"? In fact there is nothing absolutely there but lies and fabrications, easily proven by a simple reading of what we publish.

What ground is there for the accusations to stand on, when the "proofs" are proven false?
Falsifying the translations of our articles is an insult to the accusers own intelligence, and to anyone who might believe them.

The goal of the accusers who are hiding behind Athens indymedia is to silence this type of political criticism and dialogue among the various sections of the Movement. But indymedia - and Cyprus IndyMedia more so - is all about providing a multiplicity of political voices and polyphony within the progressive community: what the accusers seek is to silence criticism and therefore for one "party line" to emerge dominant. We resist this effort at domination.

When the Left seeks to ban internal dialogue and disallow criticism, we all know that it only helps to magnify the honest mistakes and blunders of the well-meaning Leftists, but also to empower the intentional manipulations of the authoritarian sections of the fake "left". In Cyprus, the stalinists and their appendages already have the State in their hands, they already have the backing by the major Imperialist powers, already have the local ruling class behind them - what else do they need? But they have a great need to silence us and to disrupt the people who are engaged in self-organizing and mobilizing again within the communities for the first time in many years.

o- Anonymous Charges

The accusations made against us so far are anonymous. The material and explanations that we published above - and the direct knowledge that the people in our communities have of us through continuous involvement with our projects - show them all to be lies, misconstrued arguments, fabrications and falsifications of the record. But their anonymity, somehow gives them a "magickal" staying power.

In contrast to their anonymous lies we offer our openness, we offer our willingness to meet face-to-face with anyone who wants to talk with us, we offer our entire history and the public record of both our actions and our publications: easy to evaluate for anyone who has the interest and a commitment to the Truth.

Some of the articles we publish as a Collective are even signed with specific names so that there will be a face with a name and address attached to those positions, so that the people in our community - to whom we are morally and politically accountable every day, where we see them at work and in the street - can know that our work is not just some ravings of a group hiding behind an "anonymous" facade. We explain this in our in short article titled:
"Collective or Individual Signatures?"
http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2008/10/collective-or-individual-signatures-for.html

Is there someone with a face, name and address who can come forward and substantiate any of the accusations against us? Everyone accused has a right to face their accusers, and to hear the evidence of the charges. Who are they? Where is the evidence?

Also, why did the Athens and Patra indymedia groups go ahead and publish these false accusations against us all over the network (in at least four places online) without first making ANY effort to communicate with us?

o- What we Propose

We ask, request, beg the global indymedia network again to please reconsider, and find ways to extend some technical help to us so that we can offer Open Publishing on the Cyprus IndyMedia website. The community must be given the tools to express itself directly.

We ask that the anonymous accusations against us be rejected on the basis of our public record in the eyes of the community through our actions and words, and by the material about us and by us that is obviously written into the electronic record of the internet.

We invite any of the comrades from Athens and Patra to come visit us, stay with us, work with us if they like, or just use the visit as a fact-finding mission, instead of engaging in slander, libel, and distortion of our work. This invitation is open, of course, to all other imc volunteers who are active in the extended indymedia family.

We are open to answering any question, entertaining any suggestion stemming from this juncture, anything that will enable the progressive and radical branches of the alternative and subversive community in Cyprus to flourish and go forward. We are committed to serving primarily that community and the wider community of the people at large, who give birth to, support, nourish and defend this embryonic form of the future. We ask you to help us in our mission.
