March (early) round-up - Mostly Epic!

I'm a little early this month, but making hay whilst the sun shines i guess!

It's been a productive few weeks, where I've had a little spark of creativity and decided to revisit some 6mm projects I had bouncing around my brain and bits box...

I started with some Ork character stands and their gretchin body guards - a Painboy, Mekboy, Wierdboy, Runtherd and Warlord, which i had based up last year and finally decided to put paint to plastic. (At the end of the month i realised i was a few Nobz short too, so added them).

Some Goff Gutrippas followed - I just had them and fancied painting them, which is a recurring theme this month.

I (sort-of) made some squat progress, although not in the way i wanted. I still couldn't bring myself to paint the infantry, instead I knocked out a Collosus and it's recon Gyro-Copter, a Leviathan for the IG which was already thick with paint and I didn't bother stripping it, and them some kit bashed Goliath Mega Cannon.

The Cannon were inspired by a few things.

  • Dog turd bag roll tubes - looked a decent size (probably a bit big in fairness!) and I had lots to hand.
  • The price of the originals - some crazy scalps selling them for £15+ a model!
  • The fact i don't like the originals, and felt they needed to be somewhat self-propelled to be 'realistic'
  • an excuse to kitbash, and it ties in nicely with my squat lore, that my guys are closely tied to the ad-mech, sharing tech and resources, so the older STLs and vehicles have been passed on and modified
I messed around with a few configurations settling on a more compact design, mostly to make them easier to store and more robust, and I'm really happy with them.

The Poundland/Dollar-store tunneller got some paint too as a test. I have another 2 so will maybe run them as Moles to take my squat warriors into combat.

The green imperial Knight Palladin Household were finished - after sitting base coated in my bits box for a year or so. They are rough, but passable.

The last 2 demon prince proxies from Vanguard got a lick of paint. These projects are great for a rainy mid-week lunch break effort as they (and everything this month) come together very quickly.

Lastly - more Orks! Madboyz, 3 units of them to fill up any 2nd edition army free support slots. Had to be done!

On to April now - Squats! Bikers, Infantry, Light artillery and then we are done.
Bolt action - finish the Volksstrum.

Maybe some more kitbashing... We'll see.

March Roundup (and a bit of April too!)

It's been a relatively busy month hobby wise!

Firstly have sold/am in the process of selling some excess Epic and 40k stuff that I know I will just never use - either because I didn't paint it, or because it's for an army I don't collect or want to paint.

Feels great moving this stuff on, and the brief period of reclaiming some space in my constantly shrinking office/hobby space where I'm spending most of my time these days.

Of course I couldn't do that without doing something equally stupid... My choice this time, having just sold a whole bunch of Epic space marines was to start a new small Space Marine army?!

Partly the motivation for this was to make some Epic 40k/3rd edition specific formations, as well as paint up some stuff for fun.

I've knocked out a battle company of marines, some armour, a Thunderhawk, some terminators and support stuff. (still to base these so i'll put them in the next post)

I plan on adding some land speeders and bikes - my new aim being to make this a 1997 era specific army (although I've already broken this plan by using some older 2nd ed stuff and putting it all on square bases... meh!)

Aside from this I continued my efforts to paint all the things, including some epic and some old 40k models which I originally painted as a kid, and was happy with them at the time, but I knew I could do them more justice now, so they took a bath in some methylated spirits and I'm going to enjoy tackling these again.

Out with all the painting stuff, I've been trying to learn the rules for 3rd Edition Epic, playing some solo games, doing the same for Bolt Action to keep my brain fresh!

Epic - Cleansing the palate

Popped some fairly random miniatures out of my Epic box for a quick 28mm/WW2 palate cleanser.

Fun to paint bold colours at this smaller scale again.

In addition I finally completed my plan to create drop-pod company using wall plugs I bought last year.

I also took my epic Orks out for a bit of an inventory - as I didn't include them in my re-basing exercise last year (for good reason - my sanity).

I've concluded that I have 'too much' of some stuff, and not enough of others. e.g. I have multiple copies of the same clan, but I'm lacking some support options and cools things like the mek-boy renegades.

So I think I'll get rid of some of the stuff I'm not overly fond of and try to find the missing bits for a reasonable price.

Epic - Snow Days Painting

Just a quick work in progress update.
Started a new job last month, so expecting a slow down in painting. But then a few snow days have given me a chance to knock out some new Eldar flyers and a couple of gargants.
They are all ready for the table top, but might add a bit more detail if i get the time next week.

Epic - The Rusty Slasher

Just a quick one.
I've not been painting much this week - more of a sorting/eBaying time, which was well needed!

Shifted a load of stuff and i can now see what i have, and what i need.
I have some Gargants (Great and Slashers) which i'll make a start on, i needed a Mekboy Gargant - and picked up one for a decent price, and painted to a decent standard.

I also picked up some newer style Eldar flyers - Nightwings and Phoenix bombers - so will do them in the blue/white scheme iIve been painting my Eldar in lately.

Anyhoo, here's a Slasher Gargant that i painted up this morning while waiting in on a delivery. And then a pic of the Mekboy, which was already painted OK, so i just gave it a wash and some highlights and stuck it on a base.

I'm alive! - Eveything

I'm going to try and get back in the habit of regular postings, as i have been ramping up the painting progress lately, but i'm struggling to keep track of it all!

Most exciting news is that I've taken a dive into the world of airbrushing, grabbed a cheap package from Amazon and getting the hang of it now. Really handy for priming/base coating as the Scottish weather has been unpredictable to say the least. Can also see it being a great tool for getting tanks etc painted up.

Over the last few months I've been painting Star Wars Imperial Assault, Epic 40k, Flames of War and building some terrain, so just going to dump what photos i have below, and hopefully i'll be better at documenting stuff as it happens in the future!

Coming up;

I've ordered the Flames of War v4 Starter set as I've got a soft spot for World War 2 desert tank warfare.

5 models left to paint from the Imperial Assault - Return to Hoth expansion

Epic Ork slow grow army is coming along, a couple more clans and some vehicles and i can call it 'done'

Epic Imperial Guard, Space Marine and Chaos - finishing a few bits off and then i can eBay the excess as i don't think i'll ever realistically use it all.

Terrain - going to have a clear out so that i'm left with only what i need for a 6x4 Desert, Urban and Temperate, 6mm, 15mm and 28mm tables as it all takes up soooo much space!
