Symphony

Symphony is an Elixir/OTP service that runs autonomous, isolated agent sessions on Linear issues so teams can manage the work, not the agents. It claims issues, creates per-issue workspaces, launches Codex or Claude against a repo-owned workflow prompt, recovers stalled runs, retries failures, and reports outcomes back to the tracker.

Warning

Symphony is an engineering preview for operator-controlled, trusted environments. It includes operational guardrails, but it is not a hardened multi-tenant service and should run behind trusted network and authentication boundaries.

How It Works

Linear issue -> Symphony -> workspace -> agent -> pull request -> Linear status

Symphony claims eligible Linear issues, creates a fresh workspace per issue, launches the configured agent against that repository's WORKFLOW.md, and keeps the run moving until there is a pull request with validation evidence. Failed runs are retried with backoff and stalled agents are detected and recovered, so long-running queues do not need constant operator supervision.

During app-server sessions, Symphony also serves scoped client-side linear_* tools so repo skills can read and update only the current Linear issue through Symphony-controlled operations. If a claimed issue moves to a terminal state (Done, Closed, Cancelled, or Duplicate), Symphony stops the active agent for that issue and cleans up matching workspaces.

Glossary
  • Workflow: the repo-owned policy and prompt that tells Symphony what to run.
  • Run: one attempt to make progress on a Linear issue.
  • Workspace: the isolated checkout or worktree for a run.
  • Tracker: the system Symphony polls for work, currently Linear.
  • Repo route: an entry under repos: in symphony.yml that pairs a local checkout with its WORKFLOW.md and optional Linear selectors. One Symphony process can supervise many repo routes.
  • Quality gate: the optional pre-dispatch check that decides whether an issue is clear enough for an agent.
  • Harness engineering: the practice of preparing a codebase with scripts, tests, docs, and guardrails so coding agents can work safely.

Setup

Symphony works best in codebases that have adopted harness engineering: scripts, tests, docs, and workflow prompts that let coding agents work safely.

  1. Get a Linear personal token from Settings -> Security & access -> Personal API keys, and export it as LINEAR_API_KEY.
  2. Prepare each target repo with a WORKFLOW.md.
  3. List those repos under repos: in symphony.yml.
  4. Install the Elixir/Erlang toolchain with mise.
  5. Start Symphony from this repository root.

The LiveView dashboard is available at http://127.0.0.1:4000 by default when observability is enabled.

Exposing the dashboard remotely. The HTTP dashboard and /api/v1/* endpoints have no built-in authentication. Do not set SYMPHONY_SERVER_HOST=0.0.0.0 directly. If you need remote access, keep the bind on 127.0.0.1 and front the port with a reverse proxy that handles auth, such as Tailscale, Cloudflare Access, nginx basic auth, or similar. If you know what you are doing and want to bind directly, set SYMPHONY_ALLOW_REMOTE_BIND=1.

Configuration

Symphony reads two files:

  • symphony.yml: operator config for tracker settings, workspaces, agents, pollers, gates, notifications, and the repos: list. Plain YAML, no front-matter fences.
  • WORKFLOW.md: repo-local prompt body and per-repo hooks. YAML front matter between two --- lines, then the prompt template. Each repo listed under repos: has its own WORKFLOW.md.

Start Symphony from a directory containing symphony.yml:

Pass --config to point at a different operator config:

./bin/symphony --config ./symphony.claude.yml

If --config is omitted, Symphony reads ./symphony.yml from the current working directory and exits with an error if it is missing. Per-repo WORKFLOW.md files are resolved from each entry under repos: and never need to be passed on the command line.

The quality gate is disabled by default. To opt in, set quality_gate.enabled: true and provide ANTHROPIC_API_KEY or configure another provider/model under quality_gate.

Docker

The Docker runtime mounts your operator config, repositories, credentials, and agent command into the Symphony service. See docker/README.md.

Operator Controls

The dashboard exposes dispatch controls at /:

  • Pause Dispatch stops new issue dispatches while in-flight agents continue.
  • Resume Dispatch clears the persisted pause flag.
  • Stop on a running issue terminates that issue's active agent session, records the run as stopped, and leaves the Linear issue state unchanged.

If the dashboard is unavailable, use the mix task fallbacks against a named local Symphony node:

About This Fork

This repository is a fork of OpenAI's openai/symphony, introduced in OpenAI's open-source Codex orchestration Symphony post. This fork keeps Symphony as the Elixir/OTP service at the repository root and includes local operational changes. SPEC.md is retained as a behavior reference for this service, not as instructions for building a separate implementation from scratch.
