Feature request: KI command to reset kickables location #1875

Description

@TheScarFr

A KI command to reset the kickables location, at least in the private Ages and in the Neighborhood if we're member of it, would be nice.

There is already a console command Physics.ResetKickables in internal clients. Does that work for you, or do you have a use case where it really needs to be a KI command?

On MOUL(a) with the default client, to unstuck Relto's firemarbles/logs/stones/crystals, and to unsick Minkata's soccerball and Eder Gira's baskets, for example.

There is the potential for abuse in shared spaces in opening this feature up to all clients. Though the stakes are admittedly rather low, there is a nonzero chance that someone could be upset by repeated resets of kickables in neighborhoods, for example.

If this were to be implemented, it would require more nuance than just adding the existing command to ki chat. I imagine there would be some debate over how exactly this would work.

The other issue is that there's no way to do this through a KI command in an IC-compliant way. The KI is a communication device, it cannot affect the physics of random objects in the world

What's the IC thing for the /[start/stop/dump]log or /[load/save]columns commands?
The "IC" shouldn't disallow to add things to the gameplay... Don't forget that it's a game.
So, if it isn't done via a KI command, it could be done differently, but I don't see how... A KI command would be the easier/better way, IMO.
Regarding the potential abuse, I agree, it's why I mentioned "at least in the private Ages and in the Neighborhood if we're member of it", but if it's only in the private Ages, it would be already great.

Both the Jalak controls and text chat are KI functions, so it's logical to have KI commands related to those - I don't see any issue with explaining those IC. Besides, even if there are gameplay features that already break immersion in some way, that doesn't mean that we should just ignore immersion when adding new features.

There's really no way to explain a magic button that teleports all physics objects back to their spawn points, no matter if you make it a KI command or something else. Even if it's a button in the settings and thus not directly part of the game world, it still has very visible unexplainable effects on the game world.

I also worry that this feature could encourage fan ages to have easily breakable physics puzzles, because there's an easy way out by resetting all kickables.

Ideally, we would adjust the physics for the affected ages so that kickables don't get stuck/lost at all, but that requires more work of course - especially if we want to fix the behavior for MOULa as run by Cyan, which is based on a different PhysX version than H'uru uses.

This is not meant as an absolute "no", but I'm not a fan of adding this feature in regular gameplay, unless we have to for practical reasons. In my opinion, we should rather fix the underlying problems with kickables getting stuck, if that is realistically possible.

The fact to reset the kickables location, hasn't to be explained IC, because it's a gameplay thing, like resetting an Age, and the "reset Age" buttons are clearly visible in the 3D environment without any IC explanations...
Regarding using this feature to break a puzzle, the Age would have to be accepted anyway, so, it wouldn't be accepted until an IC way is found; also there could have exceptions for some Ages, like Teledahn for example, because there's no need to reset the kickables from the slave cave.
    For the examples I gave:

    • In the Relto, we can put a firemarble in each of the hut's corner near the wardrobe, but we can't remove them from there.
    • Still in the Relto, we can put the logs against the hut's interior wall of the fireplace, but in some cases we can't remove some of them from there.
    • In minkata, if the soccerball has gone through the floor texture or as been put inside a kiva, we can't have the soccerball back on the floor or remove it from the kiva.
    • In Eder Gira, if a basket has fallen into the hole next to the Sparkle, we can't remove it from there.

I'm also not a fan of exposing this as a KI command for the reasons enumerated above. For owned instances of Ages, if a kickable gets stuck, the general solution there is to delete the Age instance and create it afresh. Relto poses a bit of a challenge, though, in that you can't delete it without deleting the entire avatar. I think a good workaround here would be to change the way Relto pages work slightly - when a Relto page is deactivated, its kickables are reset to their default position.

Resetting on page deactivation makes a lot of sense to me.

I agree with the suggestion to reset kickables when deactivating the page in Relto. It was actually the first thing I tried when I first had kickables in Relto act up. It doesn't solve the issue for neighborhoods, but in my experience Relto is the biggest problem spot for kickable trouble.

If I put the Relto kickables somewhere and don't want them to be moved by a visitor, I'd disable the related kickables Page, which would then reset their location; it isn't the best solution...
A "/resetkickables" command, even if it works only in the Relto (for the Kickables and Firemarbles Pages), would still be better, IMO.
