Description

Added quotes from Russian classics.

Translations

The stout are better than the thin at arranging their worldly affairs. Thin men work without portfolios or are only supernumeraries shifting from post to post; their existence is somehow too insubstantial, ethereal and quite precarious. The stout, however, never hold obscure positions; theirs are direct and straight-forward, and if they have a position, it is secure and strong: it is more likely to crack and bend under their weight than that they should lose it.

The ardent youth of today would start back in horror if you could show him his portrait in old age. As you pass from the soft years of youth into harsh, hardening manhood, be sure you take with you on the way all the humane emotions, do not leave them on the road: you will not pick them up again afterwards!

The Russian people express themselves strongly! And if they bestow a nickname upon someone, it will follow them through their lineage and descendants, dragging them along to service, to retirement, to St. Petersburg, and to the ends of the earth. And no matter how much you try to deceive or ennoble your nickname, even if you hire scribes to trace it back to an ancient princely lineage, nothing will help: the nickname will croak for itself in its raven's throat and clearly reveal where the bird flew out from.

Endure, Cossack, and you will become a hetman! A true warrior is not one who loses heart in a significant endeavor, but one who does not become bored even in idleness, who endures everything, and no matter what you say to him, he will still stand his ground

But the future is unknown, and it stands before man like an autumn mist rising from the marshes. The birds fly madly up and down in it, blackening their wings, without recognising each other, the dove without seeing the hawk, the hawk without seeing the dove, and no one knows how far it flies from its doom.

It is surprisingly pleasant to lie on your back in a forest and look up! It seems to you that you are looking into a bottomless sea, that it spreads wide beneath you, that the trees do not rise from the ground, but, like the roots of huge plants, descend, plummeting steeply into those glassy-clear waves; the leaves on the trees are now shining emeralds, then thickening into a golden, almost black green.

All happy families are alike, every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

Hypocrisy in anything can deceive the most intelligent, perceptive person; but the most limited child, however skillfully it is concealed, will recognize it and turn away.

In order to undertake anything in family life, there must be either perfect discord between the spouses or loving harmony. When the relationship between the spouses is uncertain and there is neither, no action can be taken. Many families remain in their old places for years, tired of both spouses, only because there is neither complete discord nor agreement.

No matter how stupid the words of a fool, and sometimes they are enough to confuse an intelligent person.

On the third move it turned out that the grandmaster plays eighteen Spanish games. In the remaining twelve Black used the outdated but quite correct defence of Philidor. If Ostap had learnt that he was playing such intricate games and facing such a tried and tested defence, he would have been extremely surprised. The fact is that the great combinator was playing chess for the second time in his life.

In Rio de Janeiro, for example, stolen cars are repainted a different colour so that the previous owner is not upset to see a stranger driving his car.

The financial abyss is the deepest of all abysses, you can fall into it for a lifetime.

You're an interesting man! You're all right. It's amazing to be so lucky to be out of prison.

‘I remember a wonderful moment, you appeared before me like a fleeting vision, like a genius of pure beauty.’ Isn't that good? Talented? And only at dawn, when the last lines were finished, I remembered that this verse had already been written by A. Pushkin. Such a blow from a classic!
