Docker Installation Guide 🐋🚀

What is Docker? 🤔

Docker is a platform-as-a-service product that uses OS-level virtualization to deliver software in containers. These containers are lightweight, isolated environments that allow you to run applications in any environment without worrying about compatibility issues between the host system and your application. ⚙️

In simple terms, Docker helps you run applications inside containers, ensuring that they behave the same way no matter where they are run, be it on your local machine, in the cloud, or on a server. 🌍

Step 1: Install Docker 🛠️🔧

1️⃣ Add Docker's Official GPG Key 🔑

Before we can install Docker, we need to add Docker's GPG key to your system to ensure that the packages you're downloading are legitimate. ✅

sudo apt-get install ca-certificates curl
sudo install -m 0755 -d /etc/apt/keyrings
sudo curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg -o /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc
sudo chmod a+r /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc

2️⃣ Add Docker Repository to Apt Sources 🗂️

Now, let's add Docker’s official repository to your system's Apt sources list. 📂

3️⃣ Install Docker ⚙️

Finally, install Docker and its required components. This is where the magic happens! 🪄

sudo apt-get install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin

Step 2: Verify Docker Installation ✔️

After installing Docker, let's verify that everything is working properly. 🕵️‍♂️

Test Docker Installation ✅

Run the following command to check if Docker was successfully installed:

docker --version

This should output the installed version of Docker. 🔢

Run Hello World Container 🌍

To further confirm that Docker is working correctly, you can run a simple "Hello World" container. It's like saying "Hello Docker!" 🌟

docker run hello-world

If everything is working, Docker will download a test image from Docker Hub and run it. You should see a message saying:

Hello from Docker! 👋
This message shows that your installation appears to be working correctly. ✅
