Codex review: this still needs some work.

    Summary
This issue records an official-release Windows update failure; neither its initiating cause, a matching fix, nor a duplicate is established.

Reproducibility: no. high-confidence reproduction is available: the saved official-release record establishes an interrupted attempt but omits the original termination and diagnostics; no runtime execution was performed.

    Next step
Provide the affected run ID, sanitized updater termination and validation/retention diagnostics, openclaw update status --json, and openclaw gateway status --deep before selecting a repair.

    Review details

    Best possible solution:

Repair the identified interruption at its execution owner and present verified health and a visible recovery action through the existing update flow.

Do we have a high-confidence way to reproduce the issue?

No high-confidence reproduction is available: the saved official-release record establishes an interrupted attempt but omits the original termination and diagnostics; no runtime execution was performed.

Is this the best way to solve the issue?

A code fix cannot yet be selected safely because abandonment is a settlement classification and the related Windows fixes address mechanisms this report does not establish.

AGENTS.md: found and applied where relevant.

    Remaining risk / open question:

    • The initiating updater termination, run ID, and original validation or retention diagnostics are missing.
    • The current installed version, Gateway health, and whether recovery remains necessary are unknown.

    Label changes

    Label changes:

    • add P2: An official update attempt failed, but persistent upgrade blockage, an outage, or a current-main regression is not established.
    • add impact:ux-friction: The saved report leaves the operator without an initiating cause or a verified recovery outcome.
    • add issue-rating: 🦪 silver shellfish: Current issue advisory state selects this label.
    • add clawsweeper:needs-info: Current issue advisory state selects this label.

    Label justifications:

    • P2: An official update attempt failed, but persistent upgrade blockage, an outage, or a current-main regression is not established.
    • impact:ux-friction: The saved report leaves the operator without an initiating cause or a verified recovery outcome.
    Evidence reviewed

    What I checked:

    • Reported official update failure: The full live issue body records win32/x64, Node 26.1.0, npm-global installation, before version 2026.9.8, target 2026.10.1, abandoned status, and unknown exits for validation and runtime retention; current health and recovery are unavailable. The sole comment and timeline event are an automated review-start notice.
    • Official release boundary: GitHub confirms v2026.10.1 was published on October 10 and v2026.9.8 on October 3; the report concerns official packages.
    • Abandonment does not identify the initiating failure: Automatic reconciliation requires inactivity and positively dead recorded drivers, with exceptions for legacy expiry; explicit recovery can reconcile dead drivers sooner. The writer appends reconcile:abandoned and terminalizes the run rather than diagnosing why execution stopped. (src/infra/update-run-activity.ts:165, b7133a3137d8)
    • Unknown exits are missing observations: Terminalization marks unfinished phase and in-progress steps failed without supplying exit codes; public report preparation renders absent codes as exit unknown. These entries do not establish separate validation and retention exceptions. (src/infra/update-run-record.ts:176, b7133a3137d8)
    • Runtime retention owner: The CLI records runtime retention around retaining the running updater before mutable execution proceeds; an unfinished retention step identifies pending work but does not reveal its termination cause. (src/cli/update-cli/update-command.ts:439, b7133a3137d8)
    • Existing recovery has narrower eligibility: Interrupted-success settlement requires completed post-update verification, an installed-candidate receipt, dead drivers, and no conflicting failure or recovery evidence; this report provides no such completion facts. Existing abandonment tests cover recent dead-driver recovery and heartbeat failures without aborting commands; they were inspected, not run. (src/infra/update-run-interruption-store.ts:42, b7133a3137d8)
    How this review workflow works
    • ClawSweeper keeps one durable marker-backed review comment per issue or PR.
    • Re-runs edit this comment so the latest verdict, findings, and automation markers stay together instead of adding duplicate bot comments.
    • A fresh review can be triggered by eligible @clawsweeper re-review comments, exact-item GitHub events, scheduled/background review runs, or manual workflow dispatch.
    • PR/issue authors and users with repository write access can comment @clawsweeper re-review or @clawsweeper re-run on an open PR or issue to request a fresh review only.
    • Maintainers can also comment @clawsweeper review to request a fresh review only.
    • Fresh-review commands do not start repair, autofix, rebase, CI repair, or automerge; those execution lanes are retired.
    • Maintainers can comment @clawsweeper explain to ask for more context, or @clawsweeper stop to stop active automation.
