What happened?

I've got 2 laptops running Arch Linux, X11 and Exwm. Input leap works fine for 10 minute, 20 minutes. But after not long the secondary computer exhibits the strange behavior that Ctrl and Shift seem stuck on. I first notice it with scroll wheel, it doesn't scroll it zooms, as if Ctrl is held down. Then it turns out that everything is interpreted as being Ctrl-Shift blah. Because Exwm is emacs based, even mouse clicks are interpreted as Ctrl-shift mouse click and don't do what they are supposed to do. It's hard at this point to even get a terminal up, but even then you can't use it because Enter is interpreted as Ctrl-Return. Basically the system becomes unusable at this point. I've even tried going to the text console, setting DISPLAY=:0 and manually turning off shift and control with various x commands, but without success. At this point all I can do is kill the x session and login again.

I don't know if it matters, but I'm using a YMDK keyboard and Ploopy trackball, both of which are QMK devices. It kind of seems like it's something to do with the programming of the trackball. I've got a "layer" in it for controlling youtube, a button that output "f" for full screen, and Alt-left for back... and the problem seems to happen when I've been doing that, though how that could be related I can't guess, and those buttons don't even output Ctrl or Shift combinations.

I also can't explain that when the system goes bad, killing input-leap doesn't fix the problem. But the problem never occurs if I don't use input-leap and it never occurs on the master machine.... so I don't know what to think about it.
