Is there a way to do it manually? I was surprised that editing the file didn't work.

I think you almost did it correctly, but I think the .jj/repo file needs to be updated too. Since that is not an actual symlink you need to update the path within it. That is as far as I remember.

Maybe someone else who already that manually can help more here.

Maybe you need to strip \n from .jj/repo file?

No there's not, the .jj/repo file with the embedded link is authoritative.
