do lots of polishing and bug squashing

Squashed commit of the following:
    improve docs and comments
    Split uninstall.sh to scripts for user and system installs
    On branch fixinstall
    	new file:   system_uninstall.sh
    	deleted:    uninstall.sh
    	new file:   user_uninstall.sh
    do more cleaning with Makefile
    check for build in install.sh
    improve README
    remove built files
    new file:   .gitignore
    remove build directory from version control
    fix comment
    Fix some install and build issues.

This code is 5 years old and was probably not under version
control. This is the latest version I can find. It was taken
from sourceforge.
