Thanks for this interesting project. I've been wanting to get into programming a neural net, but most things out there use python and python packages such as tensorflow.
I've added my versions of nn.c which will open up your neural net program to more users since any C compiler (new or old, Linux or Windows or Mac?) should be able to compile them. I've also added a version to save the resulting neural net (after training) and a version to load in the saved neural net and try to recognize user provided ASCII images (some test images also provided).
Feel free to merge these in any way you feel appropriate. I didn't know the best way to add these (especially since I changed the formatting style of your code - that would make a merge to nn.c more difficult, which is why I made a contrib directory).
If you do merge this, you may (if you desire) provide a link to my account in README.md (I just put mrmcsoftware because I wasn't sure how to @ someone in markdown/github and I also didn't want to presume anything).
