Independent research, built in public

I'm P.C. O'Brien / Eden Eldith, an autistic, disabled independent researcher developing open-source work across AI, optimisation, scientific computing, data analysis and experimental mathematics.

My projects include language models trained from scratch on consumer hardware, optimisation algorithms, research software, scientific simulations, public-data investigations, and tools for turning large amounts of information into something humans can actually work with.

Projects include WiggleGPT, COLM, UMACO/MACO, ChatInsights, environmental-data research, astronomical tooling, simulation work, and an expanding collection of experimental research published openly on GitHub.

I do this independently, without a university, company laboratory, institutional compute cluster, research grant, or salary.

At present, disability benefits are my only regular income.

That means sponsorship has a very direct effect: it helps pay for the hardware, compute, storage, hosting, APIs, data and time needed to keep doing the work.

What sponsorship supports

• GPU compute, storage and hardware
• hosting, APIs and research infrastructure
• datasets and archival material
• experiments requiring substantial compute time
• maintaining and documenting open-source projects
• the time needed to research, build, test and publish

Where possible, I publish the code, models, methods, results and supporting material openly, so other people can inspect it, reproduce it, criticise it, build on it, or take it somewhere I never expected.

A lot of modern research assumes access to institutions, credentials, funding, compute and professional networks. I don't have those things. What I do have is a consumer PC, a lot of curiosity, and an unreasonable willingness to keep poking at difficult problems until something interesting falls out. :P
