Efficacy Justification (why is this change necessary?): There are a number of property terms used to designate the units associated with a corresponding property intended to supply a data value. There is inconsistency among the recommendations for supplying values for those unit properties. The changes proposed for the Notes and Example fields of this term provide consistent recommendations for supplying controlled value strings for this term.
Demand Justification (if the change is semantic in nature, name at least two organizations that independently need this term): Necessary for consistency in recommendations for constructing the string values for xUnit terms and preventing confusion for data providers.
Stability Justification (what concerns are there that this might affect existing implementations?): In most cases, users will be supplying the same SI unit abbreviations as before. This should only affect cases where there was previously inconsistencies, so the change should not be disruptive.
Implications for Darwin Core Archive schemas (which XML schemas would require changes?): None
Implications for Darwin Core DP schemas (which JSON table schemas would require changes?): None
Implications for IRI namespaces (does this change affect an IRI term version?): Yes. Insert the uniform Note text for IRI terms found in the parent issue umbrella issue for Units #925
Proposed attributes of the new term version (Please put actual changes to be implemented in bold and strikethrough):
Term name (in lowerCamelCase for properties, UpperCamelCase for classes): dwc:assertionUnit
Term label (English, not normative; convention is to capitalize and separation each word with a space): Assertion Unit
Organized in Class (e.g., Occurrence, Event, Location, Taxon; required for properties): dwc:Assertion
Definition of the term (normative; convention is to prepend a namespace abbreviation to each standard term referenced): A unit associated with the value in dwc:assertionValue.
Notes (recommendations regarding content, etc., not normative; convention is to prepend a namespace abbreviation to each standard term referenced): Recommended best practice is to use a controlled vocabulary such as the Ontology of Units of Measure http://www.ontology-of-units-of-measure.org/ for SI units, derived units, or other non-SI units accepted for use within the SI. For units that are composed of multiple parts, use the patterns as given in "A Primer for Communicating Mathematics via Plain Text" (https://cse.sc.edu/~fenner/latex-ASCII.pdf) by Stephen Fenner (e.g., g/cm^3 for grams per cubic centimeter). For other units, provide the value as a recognizable standard (e.g., '%') or written out in full and in the plural (e.g., individuals). It is fine to provide non-SI units in the original language of the dataset. This term has an equivalent in the dwciri: namespace that allows only an IRI as a value, whereas this term allows for any string literal value.Insert the uniform Note text found in the parent issue umbrella issue for Units #925
Examples (not normative; convention is to enclose each example in backticks and separate examples with a semicolon and a space): m; s; g; ml; %; individualsm; s; g; cm^3; %; individuals
Refines (identifier of the broader term this term refines; normative):
Replaces (identifier of the existing term that would be deprecated and replaced by this term; normative):
ABCD 2.06 (XPATH of the equivalent term in ABCD or EFG; not normative): DataSets/DataSet/Units/Unit/Gathering/SiteMeasurementsOrFacts/MeasurementOrFact/MeasurementOrFactAtomised/UnitOfMeasurement or DataSets/DataSet/Units/Unit/Gathering/SiteMeasurementsOrFacts/MeasurementOrFact/MeasurementOrFactAtomised/UnitOfMeasurement
