Pollinations.AI is an open-source gen AI startup based in Berlin, providing the most easy-to-use, free text and image generation API available. No signups or API keys required. We prioritize your privacy with zero data storage and completely anonymous usage.

Quick summary to get a service running locally:

1. Install Nix (recommended) — https://nixos.org/download.html
2. Copy the environment template and edit secrets:

3. Enter the development shell:

nix develop

4. Install dependencies (if not provided by the dev shell):

npm install

5. Run development migrations and apply indexes (idempotent):

npm run migrate:development

6. Start the dev server for the service you're working on (example):

npm run dev

Notes:

• npm run migrate:development is idempotent — it queries the local D1 migration status and skips already-applied SQL files, then applies local indexes.
