The information in this article applies to all Dropbox users.

We sent you an activity alert because your Dropbox account was accessed from a new location. Go to the Security and My apps tabs in your account settings to see all the current sources of activity on your account, including:

  • Linked computers
  • Web browser sessions
  • Linked apps

If you suspect someone else has accessed your Dropbox, here are some things we recommend you do to secure your account:

To change your password:
  1. Log in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials).
    • Depending on your plan, your avatar may appear in the top-right or bottom-left corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Open the Security tab.
  5. Under Password, click Change password.

To set up two-factor authentication:

  1. Log in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials).
    • Depending on your plan, your avatar may appear in the top-right or bottom-left corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Open the Security tab.
  5. Under Two-factor authentication, toggle to On.

Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your account. Once it's turned on, Dropbox will require both a six-digit code and your password whenever you log in to Dropbox, or when you link a new computer, phone, or tablet.

Passkeys provide a secure way for you to log in to your account without using a password. They offer an additional level of security against phishing and SIM swap attacks, as well as making the log in process quicker and more convenient.

How to add a passkey when logging in

You might see a prompt to create a passkey right after you log in. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish setting up your passkey.

Once complete, you’ll be able to use your passkey instead of your password for faster, more secure log-ins.

How to add a passkey to your Dropbox account

  1. Log in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials).
    • Depending on your plan, your avatar may appear in the top-right or bottom-left corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click the Security tab.
  5. Under Passkeys, click Add passkey.
    • If you already have a passkey, click Manage passkeys, and then Add new passkey
  6. Enter your Dropbox account password, and click Next.
  7. Follow the instructions in your browser to create a passkey.
  8. Enter or edit a nickname for your passkey, if you wish.
  9. Click Save.

You can now use your passkey to log in to your Dropbox account.

To prevent problems in the future, don't share your account password with anyone. If you need to share files with others, use the Dropbox sharing features.

If you can't log in to your account, please try to reset your password. If you're unable to reset your password and believe your account has been compromised, contact us.
