Hot meat, hot rats, hot cats, hot zitz, hot roots, hot soots
I was all Nah Zappa's fine and my dad was like Pffft he's fucking weird I hate all his stupid shit Cap's the man for me and I said to him Have you heard Hot Rats because the melodies straight up kill me in places like Son of Mr Green Genes and it's actually your mate Beefheart bringing things down to a grimy, earthy, bluesy, level when he's singing about pimps, floosies, hotels, and rats on Willie the Pimp and it's good, in fact, it's great, don't get me wrong, I like the captain (nobody should call him that), the captain, I like more, for the most part, and his grimy, earthy, bluesy pimp song might be the best, but it's the melodies, I said, It's that melody on Son of Mr Green Genes that just kills me

Matching Mole - Matching Mole (1972)
Matching Mole is one of the best album covers ever, a sweet opening track attempting to meld naivete and sophisticated self-awareness, a disarmingly modern sounding song called Instant Pussy (!), and artsy jams which may or may not begin to bore the shit out of the listener as they jam on. For those who lose their shit to boredom when hearing Wyatt's band jam away, the only way to really appreciate Matching Mole is on vinyl, gazing at the cover's best-album-cover-ever-ness and only playing the first side but who knows where to get that. I'd say it's directionless but maybe that's the point. I'm off to listen to Rock Bottom.

Masters Apprentices - A Toast To Panama Red (1972)
My two favourite decades in music: the 70s and the 80s. The 80s had the best music, the 70s had record covers like A Toast To Panama Red: the reason for second-hand record stores
As a New Zealander and lover of most things Australian, I feel that it is my duty to give records like A Toast To Panama Red the benefit of the doubt rather than resorting to bratty write-offs common over the internet where music is concerned- overrated Australian trash or nobody would even care if this wasn't Australian (???) or comebacks like pump your breaks, kid, A Toast To Panama Red's a national treasure
I did it. I listened. Twice! I learned nothing. I posted it. For the cover. I'll keep any eye out for it at second-hand record stores. Maybe then it will make sense.

Traffic - The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (1971)
Neither compromising nor intellectualizing their skill or vision as progressive rockers, The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys had Traffic going pop-jazz-rock, or still odd and jammy enough, but also writing pop rock songs. On the title track in particular, they benefit from this. It's 70s pop/rock enough to work its way into the listener's head and memories and make it feel like the song's been heard a million times. It's also pop enough that the jams between choruses never seem like complete deviations- they almost convince of their purpose. There's that enthusiasm- they're buying our prog! and that familiarity- it often makes too much sense to be completely prog. Critics argue that none of the following tracks reach The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys' level of transcendent pop and in fact weigh the record down. I'm also bummed out that a track so good got put second, but nothing else seems familiar enough to even attempt to compete. Flourishes of quiet-storm (accidentally, Smokey's single came out 4 years later) and non-elfish folk (thank god!) keep things interesting while the happy feeling from that second track remains. True, they made the mistake of climaxing too early, but at least they don't attempt it again. All I can think of is sex analogies now! Maybe it's like they give you a back-rub for the remaining 23 minutes 'cause their balls hurt, and that's fine

Prog fans- Tool vs Bropeth vs Dream Theatre vs Mastodon vs Yes vs King Crimson vs Kayo Dot- all elitist jerks imo- to the non-elitist the best prog rocks hard like Red or bropeth (ass opposed to queentheatre or bitch theatre as people call them)
Captain Beyond rocks hard and I like it. I think the subcategory of heavy psych was invented for releases like this. Prog for Melvins and Creedence fans or some shit
Captain Beyond is a one-of-a-kind progressive album with rock, heavy metal, and jazz influences with a "space rock" lyrical bend. Formed by former members of Deep Purple (Rod Evans, vocals), Iron Butterfly (Rhino, lead guitar, and Lee Dorman, bass), and Johnny Winter (Bobby Caldwell, drums) Captain Beyond is an album that flows from riff to riff, drumbeat to drumbeat, often with various time signatures within the same song. Taking a tip from the Moody Blues, songs flow directly into each other without benefit of any lag time between selections. Taken as a whole, the album is kind of a rush, as quick, riff-laden guitar lines predominate for a few songs before slowing down temporarily into a lull until the next takeoff. Lyrically, the album differentiates itself by exploring themes of the outer world and meanings of existence, often with references to the moon, sea, sun, and so on. Listeners may get the feeling of taking a journey to space in a rocket ship headed for destination unknown. Musically, the album is superior in all aspects. Rod Evans has a strong rock voice, Rhino plays an enormous amount of hook-laden guitar lines, and Lee Dorman plays complex basslines (for example, at the end of "As the Moon Speaks-Return") that lead to typically rhythmic, nimble Bobby Caldwell drumming. The tightness between musicians is enormous, never lets up for long, and leaves the listener feeling like the ride should continue for the indefinite future.A

Bad Dudes - Thai Guy (2008) [VBR]
Behold, an EP comprised entirely of covers of Sagat's theme from Street Fighter 2. There are 10 covers in all, including styles such as prog rock, porno groove, solo piano waltz and obscure tracker module tribute.
Hopefully this will appeal to some people. As far as I'm concerned, there is no need to know or care about Street Fighter to listen to this, as that was pretty much the situation I was in when I first heard it.
For those interested, the MP3 comments tell a little story. Oh, and Sagat is from Thailand, hence the title. Apparently Max is friends with Sagat on Facebook, so maybe we can hook up the man himself?
Download from MediaFire or the Bad Dudes website.
