new men masquerading as REAL old men (2013)

Though their deal was always theft, their gift was a punk rock recklessness towards punk rock conservatism and an understanding that both theft and recklessness could be used as tools for an unconventional refinement. New Moon is their most refined effort in that sense because it's their most brutishly, apparently offensively, reckless record yet. And as always it's about heritage.

Odd that those defending The Men's SST classics comp sound/continuity can't seem to shake the feeling that on New Moon they're taking the piss, presumably simulating the effect that a Let it Be, New Day Rising, Sister, or Green Mind release might've had in the era from which The Men so liberally take, and said supporters so glorify. If it's a trick then it's complex- is it weeding out punk rock conservatives by declaring from its first breath that it won't fulfill any of our expectations after Open Your Heart by sounding kind of like a drunken rehearsal of Til the Morning Comes? It mattered on Open Your Heart when they aped Stiff Little Fingers as if to declare THERE WILL BE NO L.A.D.O.C.H., and I'd say it matters here too. As with Turn it Around, they're concerned with honesty: what Open the Door does is sort of warn that they're exploring or paying respect to the ragged/self-destructive ancestry of the indie punk they for three albums plundered and recreant critics so celebrated.

What this means is a work and sound ethic inspired by Neil Young's 'looseness'- human error, and simplicity as a means to reinvigorate rock n roll, and Alex Chilton's subversive fuckupery- deconstructed rock n roll providing multiple angles from which to experience it- the musician's feels and the critic's snort, among others. Young's influence occurs whenever they'd otherwise just sound like Dino Jr or Wilco, and while Chilton is ever-present in the band's primitivist ridiculousness, the clearest audible nod and indication of their self-awareness is in Without a Face, its jarring harmonica recalling Radio City's Life is White. Then just as everything points towards collapse, the band jolts back sort of reminding us that it'll only be through the lens of 80s designer chaos and a 2010s perspective of that that we'll ever be able to witness it (whether they head into Third territory next is anyone's guess). As much as such a progression would make sense, they sound fine being just on the brink of punk rock devastation.

Smartly critic proof (in time), they've paid their dues and managed to piss off those who've grown too comfortable identifying with punk rock revisionists of decades past. New Moon is a shambles, respectfully, which strengthens the roots of their art as the band explore the vulnerabilities, headaches, and in spite of that, appeal, of the antecedents to their influences. Attractive or not, New Moon is a reflective detour or like sensitively planned identity crisis from a band who'd previously appealed in their image of carefree thieves and forgers. Unexpected, but smart, funny, affecting, and bold.

One Plus One (2012)

Harry Pussy 2piece jams- new names new contexts new flows. Where we'd already done the hard work getting through the mindsplitopen abrasiveness of one jam by making sense of it in relation to the thoughtful melancholy of the next, it's that surrealistic interplay or dynamic which elevates their bullshit noise to the level I believe they sat on with almost no one else. One On One defamiliarizes it all over again, forcing its way into your head and stomach and feelings even if you've heard it before, and if you haven't then holy shit hurry up and get started

Jawbreaker - Unfun (1990)

Man o man! You'd think from the amount of Unfun h8rs that anyone could write an album off just by mentioning Fugazi, Husker Du, The Replacements, and the dreaded pop punk tag. You'd probably also think of music as a race to see who can do something first, and that's all, although I think music histories certainly read that way. Pays to NOT BE A H8R and also to, ya know, enjoy a record for being a good one. On Unfun, Jawbreaker's songwriting aim is Husker Du, their experimental aim is Fugazi, and their fundamental spirit is emo. Not reaching the cutting edge heights of their influences, their record still rules. Biggest criticism I can find is that it might be 4 tracks too long (11's more manageable), but this one's got four bonus tracks on it (fancy that!)

Mclusky - Mclusky Do Dallas (2002)

Beneath the thrill of their fuck u noise punk lies better music than you make. Over that is a vibe which convinces that they're good dudes and assholes at the same time, which counts for a lot in noise rock. All over the place there's musical, vocal, and lyrical variety. All over the place there's inconsistencies. And over that is the thrill of fuck u noise punk

(1991)

1. Turnaround 2:17
2. Aneurysm 4:49
3. D-7 3:47
4. Son of a Gun 2:48
5. Even in His Youth 3:07
6. Molly's Lips 1:51

Hormoaning is two original b-sides and four covers existing somewhere between sloppy drop-d sludgemonkery and refined noise pop teen-angstery. Turns out what exists between sludgemunkery and teen-angstery is punk rock. Hormoaning is punk rock

Half Japanese - Loud (1981)

On Charmed Life Half Japanese went half-retarded without knowing any chords or theory, just plucking/hitting their instruments in a way they thought sounded alright to cutesy songs inspired by the wise simplicity of Jonathan Richman. I figured they thought they sounded like The Modern Lovers in the same sorta way that Daniel Johnston thought he sounded like The Beatles... I thought the Captain Beefheart-ish moments were entirely coincidental! But the earlier release, Loud, changes all that. They didn't end up cutting-edge through sheer naive passion and endearing amateurism! This shit has DNA, James Chance, Captain Beefheart, and Pere Ubu all over it! These guys know their punk rock! They know their no wave! They know their noise! What the fuck! I'll never hear Charmed Life the same way again!

But man, their dumbass no wave inspired noise rock is pretty awesome

Material - Memory Serves (1981)

Material's avant-garde dance record: as fun and weird as that sounds. Laswell plays oddball funk basslines which anchor the songs as the other musicians experiment like crazy over the top. Said musicians manage to go avant-garde while maintaining a punk rock spirit, keeping Memory Serves unpretentious. I can hear the Captain Beefheart influence and also where guys like Mike Patton and Les Claypool listened excitedly. That may or may not be a bad thing to you.. I think it's awesome

The Birthday Party - Live 1981-82 (1999)

Whoever recorded these Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari weirdos forgot the general rule that in rock the voice is central, accidentally allowing for the guitars to share prominence with the shrieks. All the better for it, a band like this benefitting from the emphasized duality of Cave’s pretentious primitivism (Freudian, Nietzschean...) and Howard’s pretentious Romanticism (Poe?). That is, beside (rather than behind) the shock and aggression there’s a direct, defeated, desperation and vulnerability. 16 songs is too long, but it has Junkyard live 1981 on it, so A

Lifetime - Jersey's Best Dancers (1997)

Young, Loud, and Snotty? At least you guys know it! Oh wait, it's Scotty. Haha!

Nostalgia-core for those who heard it in 1997. I didn't hear it 'til last week, so it's more than that. I found it when I was trying to get something like Leatherface's Mush. When you hear it you'll know how confused I was! Other than both being hardcore in the most liberal sense and also fast and moving, they couldn't be more different. In fact, with those criteria you could be talking about Husker Du or the Meat Puppets! So under labels I've added pop punk and emo. Bitter in the most wide-eyed and naive way, and with REALLY good songs

Alice Donut - Bucketfulls of Sickness and Horror in an Otherwise Meaningless Life (1989)

1. Lydia's Black Lung 2:48
2. Testosterone Gone Wild 2:24
3. Sinéad O'Connor on T.V. 1:34
4. Dorothy 4:29
5. Sky of Bones 4:50
6. Egg 3:37
7. Consumer Decency 2:34
8. My Life Is a Mediocre Piece of Shit 4:13
9. Incinerator Heart 1:30
10. Bucket, Forks, Pock 3:38
11. Demonologist 3:14

Punks with the good sense to look at everything The Butthole Surfers did and then conclude that a punk could and should listen to Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart not only for their strange instrumental turns, but also for their shitty jokes- Alice Donut have a good sense of humour and critical eye (Sinead O'Connor on TV is not what you'd expect)- but they aren't just punx gone avant-tard (there's enough of that!)- there's also the bizarro Morrissey jokes/observations (at least it's not all husky piss, right?) and fun hooks of whatever punk band they also listen to from the era where punks simplified pop, so that with the avant-ness is bratty power pop punk rock gone weird- making one wonder why they weren't more popular when maybe it's just my imagination, but didn't a whole heap of 1990s alternative rock bands try to do just that?

Leatherface - Mush (1992)

1. I Want the Moon 2:49
2. How Lonely 2:39
3. I Don't Want to Be the One to Say It 2:34
4. Pandora's Box 3:01
5. Not a Day Goes By 2:38
6. Not Superstitious 4:19
7. Springtime 3:18
8. Winning 1:59
9. In the Real World 2:23
10. Baked Potato 3:17
11. Bowl of Flies 2:58
12. Dead Industrial Atmosphere 4:03
13. Trenchfoot 3:00
14. Scheme of Things 3:20
15. Message in a Bottle 3:32

Husker Du + The Police = Mush
I thought whoever came up with that was a genius 'cause it's actually pretty accurate but then I noticed Leatherface did a Message in a Bottle cover at the end and it all made sense! Leatherface play catchy and moving hardcore punk (Husker Du) and their singer sounds like Lemmy which can be confusing at first but it just turns Mush into more of a sing-along 'cause everything ends up even more rugged, epic, and emotive

Another great example of major labels trying to get their own Nevermind by signing bands who'd never be commercially successful (Melvins, Royal Trux...) and hoping the public would catch on but never did. Just like releases by those two, Mush is a cult album that's retrospectively been hailed as a classic

4. Crawlpappy 2:12
5. My Severed Head 4:21
6. Bottom of the Chain 6:07
7. Burlesque 2:40

9. Roadkill 3:27

11. J Train Downtown: A Nest of Murder 4:30
12. Cow's Placenta to Armageddon 3:19
13. My Boyfriend's Back 2:22
14. Demonologist [unlisted] 3:42

Alice Donut's third album (Like the last two, but perfect. Every song a tiny gem of absolute genius- Mark Prindle)

Creative, catchy weirdo punk with whiny vocals and genius lyrics
A fed up Serbian,
kills Arch Duke Ferdinand,
unhinging the wrath of millions,
Time to Drink myself into oblivion
Like Redd Kross' Neurotica, Mule exists completely out of the 80s-90s reinvention of punk rock for the sake of- grunge-ing- but in a way epitomizes and betters all of that shit- as much as I'm willing to claim Nirvana as my second favourite band, Mule and Alice Donut are just some of the best shit ever

PS Mrs. Hayes skips half way through, I'll sort that out and re-up the track when I get home

Tales of Terror - Tales of Terror (1984)

"I've got an Elvis tattoo on my cock" is their best tune. What more needs to be said. Singer is in jail on heroin charges, bassist is two-time felon, lead guitarist, Lyon Wong, son of film star Victor Wong, was killed in a street fight, drummer lives in San Francisco in a methadone house. Second guitarist Trip missing in action. The Ramones are little school girls next these goons. Freakin' rocks man.

The Flesh Eaters - A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die (1981)

1. Digging My Grave 4:22
2. Pray til You Sweat 2:36
3. River of Fever 3:55
4. Satan's Stomp 5:49
5. See You in the Boneyard 3:30
6. So Long 3:30
7. Cyrano de Berger's Back 3:22
8. Divine Horseman 7:09

Suitably named after a 60s horror/sci-fi film (as garage bands should be), The Flesh Eaters are often discussed in regard to the better known X (with whom The Flesh Eaters shared some members), and punk blues bands inspired by The Flesh Eaters. This is a pity as vocalist Chris D. has one of the best punk voices I've ever heard and his lyrics are fantastic also. And because it doesn't account for those parts where you think holy shit that sounds like Captain Beefheart and Half Japanese, so fucked up jazz is as much a part of their sound as punk and blues. What I mean is they're unique and better than all these foolish punk comparisons

1. My Position on Nothingness
2. Tattoos Are Stoopid
3. Eye

5. Baudelaire's Ghost
6. Dead Beat
7. Run, Run, Run
8. Walk Into The Sea
9. Crackin' Up
10. Westford Cemetery
11. Dry As A Bone

Drunk and dark rock and roll only true to drunkenness and darkness- garage, punk rock, and noise all applicable but perhaps too restricting or maybe not true 'cause it's all that but it's also Les Rallizes Dénudés or Harry Pussy or pop rock or blues depending on what'll make the album seem like it's going faster or just appear drunker and darker to the listener- either way they've done it all for us, and it works on both levels

Cheater Slicks have been releasing consistently good albums since 1989. Next up- 1993's Whiskey

9. Southern Rock 3:05
10. Message From Kathlene 3:22
11. Trouble Breathing 3:55
12. Sorry About That 3:19

I was using Grooveshark to listen to albums that I used to like but didn't particularly want to download and buy, but that didn't work out 'cause I remembered why I loved Alkaline Trio via Private Eye and then checked out Goddamnit 'cause it's their first album and they're even better than I remember

The album is filled with catchy, enthusiastic punk/pop-punk with lyrics mainly centred around heartbreak. The singer sounds like a gentleman, something I didn't expect from pop punk. It's kind of cheesy but so good that you don't really feel self-conscious listening to it. Even with songs like Clavicle where the chorus is I just want to wake up naked next to you / kissing the curve of your clavicle

It's incredibly sweet, bitter, and earnest. Easily one of the best 90s punk albums I've heard and one that since I've (sort of) re-discovered, will undoubtedly stay on high rotation alongside guilty pleasures like Enema of the State and Sing the Sorrow, and less embarrassing ones like Punk in Drublic, Diary, and Schmap’n Schmazz. Somehow it covers all those bases.

It's fucking incredible. A garage punk band playing gospel, neither religious nor mocking
