If there was any justice in this world, John Witherspoon would’ve received a lifetime achievement Oscar before he died. I’m so glad I didn’t see this as a kid. I would’ve repeated Chris Tucker’s delivery of “you got knocked the fuck out, nigga” every damn day at school. I went to school with too many white kids, it would’ve been a problem.
Craig and Smokey exist in a living-breathing environment, and that is Friday's greatest strength. Everything feels lived in and weathered with years of usage, and that can even been seen on the characters faces. When Craig and Smokey sit and talk on a porch Friday finds a good rhythm of chemistry between its stars. A revolving door of characters cruise through their afternoon weed, and they all feel different from one another by being influenced by Craig and Smokey's perceptions. Some of the comedy doesn't hold up, and Craig and Smokey definitely don't have a sophisticated view of women, but there's a certain kind of magic in the world that's created here in the sun-baked oranges and browns of their…
everything in this movie is iconic, every quote and image still still fucking hilarious and culturally relevant after 26 years.
“how the hell you gon’ get fired,,,on your day off???”
“he gon’ cry in the car.”
“man, i got mind control over deebo! he be like ‘shut the fuck up!’ i be quiet. but when he leave,,, i be talking again.”
RIP DEEBO 😭😭😭 2020 LITERALLY BE THE SHITTEST YEAR IN ALL OF OUR EXISTENCE!!!
Believe it or not, there's this math teacher at my school who's name is Ms. Parker. It's hard to even describe just how funny it was when one of us would pop into class every now and then for no reason and say "Hey Ms. Parker! You gonna let me FUCK you Ms. Parker?" Her exact reaction everytime was nearly priceless "WHAT! What was that?"
Yeah I know; we're all assholes in the States.
I remember when I was a kid watching bits of the sequel to this movie, which I kept confusing with the ending to the sequel to Shaft with Samuel L. Jackson. Until now, I had only heard of this movie through the memes.
And well, it doesn't take long for one to realize why this has become a classic. You got some stoner humor mixed with the "hood" genre, as well as a few instances of gross-out humor mostly delivered by Witherspoon in his "throne". Seeing Regina King's journey from this to now being an award-winning actress was also fascinating, despite her being completely underuse. With his rude boy moments, Ice Cube makes for a very charming protagonist; it is…
Fridays can sometimes feel nice,
Hanging with Tucker and Ice.
In the short term,
They deal with Big Worm,
Since they owe him a hefty price.
