Our application will be a pixel drawing program, where you can modify a picture pixel by pixel by manipulating a zoomed-in view of it, shown as a grid of colored squares. You can use the program to open image files, scribble on them with your mouse or other pointer device, and save them.

I implemented this, here https://eli.li/_assets/bin/pixel/

  • This is a compiler for the Tiny-C language. Tiny-C is a
  • considerably stripped down version of C and it is meant as a
  • pedagogical tool for learning about compilers. The integer global
  • variables “a” to “z” are predefined and initialized to zero, and it
  • is not possible to declare new variables. The compiler reads the
  • program from standard input and prints out the value of the
  • variables that are not zero.

The age of frontend JavaScript frameworks eating the web world didn’t happen simply because some well-meaning developers found great DX. It happened because we were fed a line.

A deque (“double-ended queue”) is a linear list for which all insertions and deletions (and usually all accesses) are made at the ends of the list. A deque is therefore more general than a stack or a queue; it has some properties in common with a deck of cards, and it is pronounced the same way.

Something that I’ve learned over the years of running botsin.space is that a lot of people want to be able to publish RSS feeds to Mastodon. A few months ago, I decided to implement a service to run alongside botsin.space that people could use to setup accounts for RSS feeds, but without needing to go through the work of setting up a full Mastodon account on botsin.space.

The word cubit (′kyü-bǝt) in English appears derived from the Latin cubitum for elbow. It was πήχυς (pay′-kus) in Greek. The cubit is based upon a human characteristic—the length of the forearm from the tip of the middle finger to end of the elbow.

An interactive horror story about family, unease, and loss.

An interesting note about this game is that it is very much not “choice based” which I think is part of how to implements fear.

Here is my preferred take on the “post to linkhut” bookmarklet. It snags the selected text as the post’s description, and prompts you to enter some tags.

Val Town is a delightful place to code online.

If you’re new here, the fastest way to learn what Val Town is about is watching the Demo video. You can also explore what others are making, join our Discord, and of course, sign up to make your own vals for free. We’re ridiculously friendly, so don’t be shy. See you around the town!

This paper explores the use monads to structure functional programs. No prior knowledge of monads or category theory is required.

Monads increase the ease with which programs may be modified. They can mimic the effect of impure features such as exceptions, state, and continuations; and also provide effects not easily achieved with such features. The types of a program reflect which effects occur.

The first section is an extended example of the use of monads. A simple interpreter is modified to support various extra features: error messages, state, output, and non-deterministic choice. The second section describes the relation between monads and continuation-passing style. The third section sketches how monads are used in a compiler for Haskell that is written in Haskell.

Shannon Defines Information (in a technical sense) and is I believe the first published use of “bits”. Very readable.

[Bush] urges that men of science should then turn to the massive task of making more accessible our bewildering store of knowledge. For years inventions have extended man’s physical powers rather than the powers of his mind. Trip hammers that multiply the fists, microscopes that sharpen the eye, and engines of destruction and detection are new results, but not the end results, of modern science. Now, says Dr. Bush, instruments are at hand which, if properly developed, will give man access to and command over the inherited knowledge of the ages.
