    FAMOUS MARKED CARDS EPISODE.

Stories like this, and told in a clever flashback, made this show. Thanks to writer Ernest Chambers, who wrote three other episodes, prior to becoming producer and writer for the SMOTHERS BROTHERS.

Laura unknowingly gives Rob a "marked" deck of cards -- which he is going to use during a friendly game of poker? But it's not just any ole game. His guest is a former district attorney (played by Edward Platt) and his wife, Shirley Mitchell. Platt, soon to become famous as the Chief on GET SMART, is in a very similar role, a not too happy camper. Of course, you couldn't blame the guy.

BUT it's not Rob's fault. A victim of circumstances, which he most always is.

A take off on Murphy's Law; everything that could go wrong will most certainly go wrong, and this episode should be at the top of the list. True, the bit may have inspired a story or two on the ODD COUPLE, where poker games and everything that came with them (good and bad) were required viewing. I agree with the last reviewer, not jammed packed with laughs, but you have to see how Rob gets out of this dandy dilemma.

Best of SEASON 3 EPISODE 18 remastered dvd box set. Released 2004 and 2016. 5 dvd set. Now on blu ray for the next generation of fans. The cover is fun.

    Rob...the card cheat.

When the story begins, Lou (Ed Platt) is stomping out of the Petrie home and going home. It seems that Lou caught Rob cheating at cards...although he did it unintentionally. As a result, the nice dinner party is ruined and Rob has a new enemy! How he did it unintentionally is shown in a lengthy flashback scene and you wonder if the Petries will ever see Lou and his wife again. Of course, Lou DOES seem like a sorehead, so you only assume they don't!

This is a clever and unusual episode. It's relatively low on laughs but high on interesting...well made and well worth seeing...even if Lou is a big sorehead.

    • Trivia
Lou tells Jerry the modern cardsharp is likely to wear a button down collar and a striped tie. Rob wears a button down collar and striped tie in the episode.
    • Goofs
During the poker game, Beth says she has three queens. Lou is upset at having only jacks over tens, which is a full house. A full house beats three of a kind in poker. He should win the hand, but in the show she wins the hand. Maybe he was supposed to say "jacks and tens," which is only two pair, but blew his line.
