    Immaturity abounds

There are a few reasons why 'The Cane' is so good, but it ultimately comes down to Bill and Dave and a rash of buffoonery. First of all, Bill shows up with a walking stick for no reason, loses it and then immediately blames Dave (jealous!). You can see from here how the episode will probably play out with Bill on the childish offensive, but it culminates in a payoff that brims with playful mischief. It's entirely prop-driven humor but oh, does it work.

Outside of that, it's division all around, with Mr. James' workplace retreat creating a rift between Dave and Lisa over production ideas, and Matthew and Joe undergoing couple-like communication issues. Everyone involved is having fun with this episode and it shows.

    • Trivia
When Bill confronts Dave over his missing cane he says I read your book you magnificent bastard. That is a reference to when US General Patton said this when he surprised German Field Marshall Erwin Rommel in a battle. Rommel had written a famous book about military tactics between the world wars.
    • Goofs
Before Dave finally taps the pickle jar on it's head and opens it, Dave and Lisa try many times to open the jar holding it in the 'doing it up tighter' position.
    • Quotes

Bill: You see, it's like the old saying, "Everybody loves a cane."

Dave: No, Bill. I think the old saying is "Everybody loves a clown." Which is what you look like with that thing.
